[SOLVED] Terminal is slow to refresh.

Hi There Folks,
After the last update my terminal(s) have become annoyingly slow. The first thing I noticed was that lines don't scroll smoothly when you scroll across pages in emacs (no window) or vim--roughly a second to bring in new lines. I thought that it was a terminal issue, but the behavior is present in urxvt, terminator, gnome-terminal, and lxterminal. I don't appear to be having any other graphical issues when watching videos, or desktop effects, it just the terminals.
Additionally, when the screen is full, commands like ls, etc. respond rather slow as well. Roughly the same 1 second delay.
I have seen a few posts which describe similar issues with the nvidia drivers, and one that references the intel driver, but I want to see if anyone has any ideas before I try to downgrade my driver.
Thanks for any advice.

Holy sh*t batman! Switch from terminus to any other monospace font in the terminal and man doesn't the scrolling fly!! Working like it is supposed to. Let's call this solved.
Thanks everyone.
I wouldn't call changing fonts to a non-bitmap font a 'solution', rather it's a workaround.
I just changed from xf86-video-intel-uxa to xf86-video-intel-sna and it *is* actually solved, though.
Yeah, you are right, it was a workaround. Anyway, I also changed from xf86-video-intel-uxa to xf86-video-intel-sna, switched the font back to terminus and everything seems to be working as it should. Now can I call it solved ;-) ? Thanks!!

  • AppV 5 slow to refresh with roaming profile (no redirects) but fast with local profile

    Hi,
I have an issue I can't get thought out. I have an AppV5 SP3 full infra, with SMB share and local caching of packages enabled. Everything works from a functional level. However I have an issue where users with a roaming profile get a very slow AppV refresh
    during login.
I created a few testaccounts, a few with local profile and a few with roaming profiles. For these testusers there are NO folder redirects. The only difference between them is local profile or roaming profile.
When I login with a local-profile user initially, the AppV client rather slowly refreshes the applications and shortcuts. It generates quite some CPU load on the RDS host, but as soon as the shortcuts are placed everything is fine. When I log that user off,
and log in again, the shortcuts are there immediately and I can immediately start the applications (Office 2010 for example). Blazing fast. Also when logging in, the refresh-UI is there for about half a second, it really flashes and it's done.
Then with a testuser with roaming profile, the initial refresh is about the same. But when I logoff that user and login again, it's all very slow. The shortcuts are there but blank initially, it takes about 5-10 seconds to get the correct icon. It takes
much longer before the refresh actually starts (sometimes up to 30 seconds after login), and it takes 5-10 seconds to do the refresh, with 100% cpu load on the thread AppVclient.exe is running on. Also right after loging in when the shortcuts are blank they
don't work until they get the proper icon. WHen everything is refreshed it works all fine though. It's just painfully slow at start.
I don't understand this. I can reproduce this every single time. Without folder redirects I don't see the difference between roaming and local profile from AppV perspective, as the roaming profile is of course copied to the server and in that sense the server
just works with a local copy anyway.
Anyone encountered this, and how to troubleshoot, or better fix this?

So is the fact that there is a 5-10 second delay during refresh actually an issue? What I mean by that is - are any users comparing the local profiles with roaming profiles experience, or complaining that the delay is there?
Roaming profiles and Folder redirection are of course very simple to configure; however for the best user experience I recommend managing profiles with a real profile management solution.
If you have MDOP, then you'll also have access to UE-V. You've mentioned your environment is RDS, which sadly doesn't get UE-V, even though you have App-V.

  • Premiere Elements 10 slow GUI refresh

    Hi all,
I am experiencing a very slow GUI refresh rate using Premiere Elements 10. It has been happening since I first started using the program, but I am using it a bit more now and it's starting to frustrate me.
Basically, as soon as I open the program and create a new project, any action which changes the screen e.g. maximising, resizing the timeline, changing the timeline scale etc. occurs very slowly. For example, maximising the window takes approximately 4 seconds to complete, and resizing the timeline is very laggy.
It is shown reasonably well in the following clip, although it is much more pronounced for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C7GbqXir8o&feature=youtu.be
This issue has been discussed in a few other questions, but none resolved the issue (that I have found) or have kind of gone off topic, so thought I would ask myself in an effort to resolve it.
A couple of points to note:
Occurs WITHOUT any video loaded i.e. with a completely empty project. (Loading video doesn't have any effect)
It is not affected by the selected preset. They all have the same issue.
Somewhat curiously, playback of video is fine.
Disabling desktop composition as suggested in another post on this issue results in a slight improvement, but certainly does not make it go away.
    Computer specs:
Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1 (I am using the 64 bit version of premiere elements)
    Core i5 2500
    8 Gb RAM
    EVGA GTX 460 1Gb
    Asus Z77 sabretooth motherboard
Primary drive 2x 64Gb SSD's RAID 1 (OS and performance sensitive applications incl. Premier Elements)
    Secondary drive 2x 1Tb HDD's RAID 1 (Other applications & data storage)
Note that the drive configuration and motherboard have been changed recently, and had no effect on this issue.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks everyone for the responses, I really appreciate your assistance and thoughts.
Here goes with how I have got on with your suggestions/answers to your questions:
    Steve:
First of all let me just make it clear that this is occurring with nothing loaded - a completely blank project. Also, it would appear that it is a window refresh issue rather than program performance as such, as rendering/playback work just fine. This is just my initial impression though.
Footage is  from a GoPro HD Hero 2, recorded in 720p at 60 fps (actually 59.94). I convert it to .avi using the GoPro Cineform software prior to editing. I use the DSLR 720p 60 preset. I have also tried the 720p60 AVCHD LITE preset which does not have any noticeable effect on the issue. I have tried using unconverted footage straight from the camera; again this has no noticeable effect on the issue. When I add video to the timeline, there is no red line above it  - although when I apply an effect e.g. brightness and contrast one does appear.
I have never used still images so I don't know if they have any effect.
I checked just now for OS updates and and a few (11 if I recall correctly) which I installed. They had no effect on the issue.
I have also just updated to the latest graphics driver (320.49) and quicktime (7.7.4), again no effect on the issue.
The RAID 1 setup is a data mirroring configuration - each drive is an exact mirror of the other. I have this  as I have had a few HDD's fail and having to get a new one, reinstall, etc. is just a nightmare - not worth it when the risk can be effectively eliminated for a bit extra $. I do not think this is the cause as I have had a few different configurations while using premiere elements (the SSD's are quite recent) and the issue stays the same.
    John:
Thanks for the links, although I wasn't able to find anything that helped with the issue.
I will have a look for what you mentioned re an older driver being potentially better, and will try it when if I find one that looks promising and I get some time. I am not overly hopeful though as I have used several different drivers, and I have not noticed any difference.
    Bill:
I completely agree - I always go to the source for drivers rather than relying on driver update programs etc.
    ATR:
Firstly I would just like to point out that the link was not my video - it is someone else's, who appears to be a somewhat similar issue. Apologies, I should have made that clear in the original post.
What is really bugging me is adjusting the 'zoom' on the timeline (little bar on the right of the screen you drag left & right). When I move it, it will take a few seconds for everything on the screen to refresh. Not a massive issue, but really annoying!
    In response to your points though;
I was not aware that the timeline scrollbar ghost trails are common to other versions. Is this a common issue or just some isolated instances of it? I have personally not noticed any bits of clips remaining on the timeline.
I must confess I am a bit of a novice with this program, so would you be able to expand on what playback quality & playback settings I should be looking at? (Note that the playback itself is not an issue for me). Also, how might I go about checking for pile ups of preview/conformed audio/conformed video? If it helps I have all the scratch files in a dedicated folder on the SSD.
I have just defragmented, but it had no noticeable effect.
I would rather not use a registry cleaner (had some bad experiences in the past and not convinced they make a difference), and my computer is relatively clean. I do a complete fresh reinstall every 6 months or so and I am not in the habit of downloading all sorts of crap.

    Edit: typo
Edit2: I found the source of slowness - removing vboxdrv module restores system performance. How to get VirtualBox working I will try to solve somewhere else.

Your's and mine problems are probably not connected, I had low CPU utilization from all sources (including X), but system was dead slow anyway.

  • Terminal transparency and proper refreshing

Hi. I am having some problems with finding a decent terminal program.
I am using Fluxbox, and so I don't want any DE specific terminal programs.
I have xterm by default, and have been playing with urxvt, aterm and mrxvt as well.
I originally wanted a terminal program with tabs and transparency, however tabs don't matter to me anymore and fluxbox has native support anyway. Now, just proper transparency is important to me. I understand Fluxbox can induce real transparency with xcompmgr, but this has the effect of making the entire window transparent. I am looking for a terminal that supports real transparency naively so the window bar and border will not be transparent, while the "terminal part" will be.
I'm not 100% sure, but out of these I think only urxvt fits the bill, with aterm and mrxvt only supporting pseudo transparency. Is this correct?
Second to this, and my more urgent problem, is that none of the terminals except xterm seem to fresh properly. in xterm I can do everything I can do in a real tty, I can edit with vi, use curses programs etc...no problems. However each of urxvt, mrxvt and aterm behave the same way, and do not refresh properly. If I try to edit a file in vi in any of these, I can only see maybe one or two lines of the file, and can't scroll through or anything...it's impossible to actually edit.
I also note in urxvt, mrxvt and aterm the home and end keys don't work, however they work in xterm just as they do on a tty. For example in each of the non xterm terminals pressing home just gives a tilde, which means I have to hold down the left arrow to get to the end of the line, which can be frustrating.
Obviously the other 3 terminals are are emulating a different terminal type to what xterm does...perhaps. However I have not found a way to test this. For those people using a non xterm terminal, how did you solve this?
I also had some somewhat related questions that I hope I don't need to make a separate post for(they seem so trivial but really bug me)
    1. How would I press alt + enter inside a terminal? For example running wicd-curses from a terminal(Even an xterm) you need to press alt + enter to save settings, however from a terminal alt + enter has no effect. Is their any way to force this key combination?
    2. I notice when starting a terminal, the shell lacks a prompt. Why do terminals start interactive shells by default, and why do interactive shells not have a prompt? Is their a way to make interactive shells inherrit the same prompt that login shells use? I use both zsh and bash. Is their any practical difference between using a login and interactive shell?
    3. If I am running an X session as a normal user, and su to root in a terminal, is their any way I can start X programs as root and get them to display in the X session of my  normal user? I normally get an error similar to unable to open display
3a. I just tested...I normally 'su -' out of habbit, and then I get an "unable to open display" error. I just used su, so roots profile was not loaded, and I can start X programs as root. Why does this work?
    4. I was wondering if it was possible to have the titlebar of a terminal show the current command or path? Something more unique than just every window open saying urxvt or whatever.
    Many thanks for any help!

josh000 wrote:I'm not 100% sure, but out of these I think only urxvt fits the bill, with aterm and mrxvt only supporting pseudo transparency. Is this correct?
Urxvt does both real and pseudo transparancy, but this still needs your wm to have composite enabled. Also roxterm or evilvte may be an alternative. For urxvt set transparancy in .Xdefaults like this (I'm not too sure anymore what it all does but you can google it):
    URxvt*depth:32
    URxvt*background: rgba:2500/2500/2500/cccc #for semitransparancy
    # or:
    URxvt*inheritPixmap: true
    URxvt*tintColor: white
    URxvt*shading: 40

    Try stuff like this:
    *VT100.Translations: #override \
    <Key>BackSpace: string(0x7F)\n\
    <Key>Delete: string("\033[3~")\n\
    <Key>Home: string("\033[1~")\n\
    <Key>End: string("\033[4~")

I think this has more to do with shell than terminal. You have zsh and bash examples here
As for your other issues: I never had them, don't know. Hope this helps a bit.

  • Fix slowness - the refresh doesn't change anything - what's next?

Firefox is running very slow and when I try to refresh it as prompted, nothing changes. I'm not very technical and need clear instructions as to what to do next. Also, when I try to access LinkedIn, I can't and I don't know if that is a Firefox or linkedIn problem.

I had the same issue not so long ago. I could not reset the browser,
or even create a new profile. I ended up doing this; '''Close Firefox'''.
Open the file browser / explorer on your computer. '''Note:''' You may have to
    enable '''Show Hidden Folders / Files.''' Enter this in the address bar;
    Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\
    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Windows
    Linux: ~/.mozilla/
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Linux
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Mac
Rename the '''profiles.ini''' file by adding '''.old''' to it.
    Now start the Firefox.Profile Manager.
    '''Windows: 32-bit''' C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -p
    '''64-bit''' C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -p
'''Mac:''' Navigate to '''/Applications/Utilities.''' Open the Terminal application.
In the Terminal application, enter the following:
    /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -p
'''Linux:''' In '''Terminal''' run: firefox –P
For users who have one or more builds from mozilla.org this will not work.
It would be best to have the full path so if you had placed the untared contents
in a folder in /home it would be /home/<username>/foldername/firefox/firefox –P
An easy way would be not to do it in a terminal but in say a launcher since
you have to point it to the firefox script in Firefox folder you can then add –P
on end. You can also have the exact "profilename" after the -P so Firefox
    will start with that Profile.
    Select your old profile.
If this works, please open the '''profiles.ini.old''' in a text editor. Copy its
contence, and post it in the reply box below.

  • Slow video refresh on Macbook Pro Retina 13"

I installed 10.9 and was doing fine, apart from the known GMail issue (now solved). But it has been two days now that my Mac has slowed down on video refresh:
(I use a second Apple Cinema Display 24" through Display Port, but it happens even if I unplug the second display)
    * when I change screen or call mission control, I can notice a drastic performance drop in the video transitions and the menubar flashes vigorously.
    * when fullscreen (for example in Safari) my menubar drops down very slowly and sluggishly.
I reinstalled 10.9 from the recovery partition... but it had no effect. Anyone experiencing this issue?
I haven't installed anything in the last two days. I might have updated the Flash plug-in, but I am pretty sure I did it a few days ago.

Just checked the following solution. Works for me.
    http://community.skype.com/t5/Mac/Video-freeze-on-Macbook-Pro-Retina-iSight-v6-3 -0-582/m-p/1484667/highlight/true#M24337

  • IMac 5k Fullscreen Terminal/Opacity Slow & Sluggish

    Hi,
i have a weird issue with my new iMac 5k that i have narrowed down specifically to the size of windows with opacity.
The issue at first was not very clear, but at certain points when using my iMac 5k, the whole computer would get sluggish.  Memory usage was mimimal (its got 32gb ram) and so was CPU usage (top i7), but things like new browser tabs, switching between finder and another application just by clicking it in the background, mission control etc.  were all very slow in responding.  The issue would not go away until i restarted my computer.
After a day of trying to investigate what was causing the issue, i managed to narrow it down to Terminal.  I have a home-brew theme with 90% opacity set, and i worked out that as soon as i resize the terminal window to fill at least 70% of the screen, the sluggish issue would start.  The problem is that even when i quit terminal it would continue.  The only fix would be a restart.
I use terminal all the time, so the clear fix for the issue is to change to a theme without opacity (which i have done), but there must be some problem going on in the background if i can't have a basic window filling more than 70% of the screen with any sort of opacity.  I realise the 5k has to power a lot more pixels, but wanted to check that its not some other issue.
    Thanks
    Ali

Applications on Retina display can be toggled to run in Low Resolution. Select the Terminal icon, open the get info panel and tick "Open in Low Resolution".

  • Slow Finder refresh in 10.6.7

Has anyone else had a problem with Finder taking 20–30 seconds to refresh when new files are created in 10.6.7?
E.g., printing a document as a PDF to Desktop -- PDF does not immediately appear, but if the operation is tried again, I'm asked if I want to overwrite the existing file; so the file is there, but not yet visible. A few seconds later it pops up.

For general speeds issues here's what you want to try:
PRAM/NVRAM Reset: Turn on the computer holding CMD-Option-P-R (Command-Option-P-R) and keep holding until you get a second start up chime (more are perfectly alright)
Clear the caches: Go to each users home folder by opening up finder. Go into the Library folder and find a folder called Caches. Drag that into the trash. Do it for all users, restart and empty trash (files are still active so you can't delete until restart)
Then you want to go into Safari on each User and click on the word Safari in the top right hand corner. Go down to Reset Safari and have everything checked but: Reset topsites, clear history, remove other autofill form text, remove passwords
Shut down your computer, on boot it may be a bit slower because of all the resets it's auto regenerating a bunch of files, but over all your system should be faster
Specifically for you two, the caches folder removal is the most important

  • IOS 7 iPhone 4 slow to refresh/update data

Apps like Weather, Email, and Notifications seem to have slowed down in updating/refreshing data.  When I check notification center, the weather data is usually hours old.  If I open the weather app it also has the older data but quickly refreshes.  If I go back to Notification Center, it takes several more minutes to update.  If I read emails on another device, they are still marked an unread on iPhone until I open the app or manually refresh.  Anyone else having these issues?  Could it be just that the servers are so stressed from upgrades that some push notifications have slowed down?
    Before you ask, current settings:
Backgroud App Refresh: On (enabled for weather)
Location Services: ON (enabled for weather)
Notifications:  All services enabled in Today View
Mail - Fetch New Data: Push
If email is not a Push account, set to Fetch Every 15 Minutes

    Figured it out.
The photos that I thought were on the phone where in the cloud, so there wasnt actually a photo folder created yet in the camera.
Took a picture, reconnected phone and viola, there it was.

  • Late 2011 Mac Mini slow video refresh on Yosemite

I was rather happily running Mavericks, but decided why not on the upgrade to Yosemite after rough testing on my MBA, but after installation video performance has been awful on my Mini. Mission control has an awful framerate during it's animation, and when using (ImageJ) drawing/refreshing an open image windows is painstakingly slow. Below is the output from Etrecheck and Linc's script. I do not have similar issues on my MBA, and I did not have this issue on Mavericks.

I went all the way down to 720p (the lowest I could take it) with scaling and it didn't really help. The weird thing is that when I play something in Steam the GPU is fine, but using Mission control with a lot of windows open, or opening a lot of windows really bogs it down (which it didn't do a week ago in Mavericks). My feeling is that it is a poorly written graphic driver and that my issues with imageJ are because it is using the driver in a way that is failing like it is in Finder/Mission Control, and in Steam it's getting to the hardware in its own way. I've sent feedback to Apple about it.

  • Yosemite causing slow screen refresh using TOS

    Problem description:
I use my iMac for trading with a java script app called ‘ThinkOrSwim’.  It was working fine with Mavericks then I upgraded to Yosemite.  Problems continue even when upgrading my RAM from 4GB to 16GB.  Overtime the Screen refreshes get really slow after using the ‘TOS’ Platform for 2-3 hours.  Have to do a SMC Reset to be able to use the ‘TOS’ platform once it becomes too unbearable to work with it.

I just want to add that to further this improvement, I also disabled stat menus, and anything on the menu bar that caused the screen to refresh. I disabled transparency, the genie effect, and forced quit the window server on the activity monitor, and disabled the dashboard and the system preference "displays have separate spaces" - which required a re-login.
I also left the auto-switching on the nergey preferences to the GPU to always use the 330m, rather than the intel hd card.
Basically, I disabled anything that made any extra load on the GPU.

It seems that something went very wrong starting with the 8.0.3 update, there are numerous threads about this. Make sure to report this to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html

  • Terminal is slow to open

    Hi all,
I administer large number of OS X 10.4.10 servers across our organization. We are currently moving towards OD/AD integration with them. With some of them I have no problems, with others number of different issues. Not able to mount network home folders from users workstations, slow with opening files from PC workstations, etc. My guess is that there is something funky on network side, but as I'm not that familiar with it, cannot really say what causing it.
On one of the servers I have a problem every now and then when users loose their connection to it, get a spinning 'beach ball' and have to log out/restart. After their computers start up, they try to log back in, and it fails to mount their home folders. On workstations they get message about failing to log in, 'if your home folder is on SMB/AFP sharepoint - contact your administrator'.
During this time on the server, Terminal opens with only 'Last login ...etc' line in the window, after about 20-30 minutes (yes, not seconds) it will display server host name with proper prompt. Quitting and relaunching Terminal leads to the same problem, no proper prompt. Also, when opening Server Admin, all of the services are just spinning green circles, on the server itself and even on remote admin workstations. (On my laptop, I have around 20 servers in my Server Admin, and only the server, which is in that mode, displays spinning green circles without ability to display information) After being like that for a bit, server will get back to normal mode, and everybody would be able to use. It sits in this mode for some time, couple of hours or even more.
I'm a bit lost in confusion what might cause it. All of the servers that are bound to AD/OD structure are set up same way. Our network is 10.121.xxx.xxx one server that is in the same network works fine, other servers are in 192.168.xxx.xxx network, two of them are acting up, one of them is working fine (the one that works fine has DC in the same building, others don't)
If somebody has any suggestions in where to even start investigating, would very appreciate it.
    Thanks all

This appears to be a problem with one or more records for your servers' hostnames via DNS. Check to be sure that all Active Directory PDCs and BDCs have A records and PTR records for their hostnames; also check the same for all Open Directory Master and Replica servers. That's a good place to start.

  • Terminal goes slow after install Mavericks OS

After I've update my OS to Mavericks.
Terminal goes really slow, I've found out that the problem must be from Xcode.
While I remove Xcode from my computer terminal works fine, and after I installed Xcode, it goes slow again.(It takes like 2 second for ls command)
    Please help.
PS. my computer is MacBook Pro with Retina.

    Startup items are in /Library/StartupItems/
You can delete them if you are an admin user. However it doesn't remove the actual software. The safest way to do that is to either use the manufacturers uninstaller or try to find uninstall steps listed on a forum or support site.
I'm inclear on 'Oplmgr' check that is up to date if you can, since it is using the old way to load a startup job.
Palm desktop is probably version dependant (check what you have)…

Soundflower looks out of date? Grab the installer (with an uninstaller IIRC) and update or remove it.
LogMe In, TeamViewer & Splashtop are running jobs in the system level too, so I'd spend time checking they are up to date or removed if they are not needed.
The Launch Daemons and Launch Agents are 'system level, with your own user version too  - User Launch Agents.
I would clean out the failed background job…
              [failed] [email protected]
    It will be stored at…
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/[email protected]
Use the Finders 'Go Menu > Go to Folder…' to open the hidden ~/Library & look in the LaunchAgents folder for the .plist & delete it.
Reboot for the Startup items to be unloaded.
