[SOLVED]Terrible Video Performance on ATI Rage Mobility Card

Hello everyone, I just recently picked up an older Dell Latitude C800 from Craigslist and have installed Arch on it. My problem is 3D performance is really bad. When I try to load Chromium it sort of flashes the screen and scrolls real slow. So I'm guessing the 3D acceleration from the driver I installed is not working. Below is some info:
[griff3n@arch ~]$ lspci | grep VGA

Ok, so I can get the server to run by altering a couple of options in xorg.conf. I changed all the options below but performance is still shot.
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. Rage Mobility M4 (AGP)"
Driver "r128"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "AGPMode" "4"
Option "AGPSize" "32"
Option "EnablePageFlip" "true"
Option "Display" "BIOS"
Option "SWCursor" "true"
Option "CCEusecTimeout" "20000"
EndSection
I'll have a messed up screen that performs great with the above settings. As soon as i change the options below, the screen is normal, but the performance goes to hell. Any ideas?

lol Ingenious the guys who deviced this, personally I still dont understand completely how it actually works:
    http://www.webupd8.org/2011/10/increase … -with.html
    https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=52958
Bsically right now I'm trying all of this performance optimiations (where possible)
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ma … erformance
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Im … erformance
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Im … erformance
I'm using xfce now, it consumes around 100M at start but thats because I have all kind of gadgets turned on right now, for montioring things (without all this it consumes about the same than lxde, and a little more than openbox(crunchbang style), I really like it and when I find the other 256 ram module I will try it again (with zram too of course!), openbox is nice, I'll try maybe something even lighter, and thats why I keep trying more and more lightweight apps right now.
I LOVE qterminal, now I have a yakuake drop down style terminal that is light and featured!
Also even though using zram comes at the cost of lower-time-performance, it's still faster than swaping to disk, and I can feel the difference, if I also actiate an aditional 128M swapfile (with lower priority), I can even open more progrems, but it starts lagging if it starts to get full both ram and swaps, in those cases all I do is log out and in again, but I never let it get to those stress conditions unles I feel like testing it! lol
    Also this script is useful:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Empty_Swap
(the last one is the one I use)
here is the beast (a.k.a toybox):

  • Dual head setup (mach64 - ATI Rage Mobility)

    hello everyone!
I want to use a new extra monitor I got recently, with my laptop, I use aweosme.
    I have installed:
    xf86-video-mach64 (recompiled with dri support)
    mach64-dri (from community)
    mach64drm (from AUR)
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mach64
Still I can't get OpenGL to work:
    ismaelvc@toybox ~ $ glxinfo | egrep "direct rendering|OpenGL renderer"
    direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on softpipe
I don't really know if it got something to do with this but I post it anyway in case it is.
xrandr doesnt detect the other monitor:
    ismaelvc@toybox ~ $ xrandr -q
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 175, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768
    default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm
    1024x768 87.0* 85.0 75.0 70.0 60.0 81.0
    832x624 75.0
    800x600 85.0 75.0 72.0 60.0 56.0
    640x480 85.0 75.0 73.0 60.0
    720x400 85.0
    640x400 85.0
    640x350 85.0
    512x384 87.0 85.0 75.0 70.0 60.0
    416x312 75.0
    400x300 85.0 75.0 72.0 60.0 56.0
    320x240 85.0 75.0 73.0 60.0
    360x200 85.0
    320x200 85.0
    320x175 85.0
Still it displays exactly the same that gets displayed at my laptop.
I used to had problems with the drivers, I needed both mach64 and radeon for it to detect the screen properly, until I created a "20-mach64.conf" with this:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "mach64"
Card "ATI Rage Mobility - Mach64"
    Option "DMAMode" "async"
    Option "ForcePCIMode" "false"
    Option "AgpMode" "2"
    Option "AgpSize" "32"
    Option "BufferSize" "2"
    Option "LocalTextures" "true"
    Option "EnablePageFlip" "true"
    EndSection
    Section "Module"
    #<Your modules>
    Load "glx"
    Load "dri"
    EndSection
    Section "DRI"
Group "video" #change to any desired group to restrict access
    Mode 0660
    EndSection
I have a doubt regarding the commented line that came as example in the mach64 wiki that reads <your modules>, I don't know what goes in there.
Also I red this for some mach64 related xorg info:
    http://www.x.org/archive/X11R6.8.0/doc/ati5.html
    http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=201482
The last one is for a cursor problem I have, but it wont get fixed, neither, anyway the default xcursor looks good in awesome, I switched to cli apps form many tasks, and use uzbl now! all this plus arch is now so minimmal I love it lol!
I red in a post (not in this one) mach64 chips supported dual head, but I can't find it again, I will post it when I find it.
    Thanks in advance!
EDIT: ok here it is, where it say its supported: I don't understand all the configs.

Sorry to necrobump but I was seeing you get a lot of incorrect information on LinuxQuestions.
The mach64 driver does NOT support dualhead. Some chips are capable of it but this feature has yet to be added to the driver. It is also not compatible with xrandr. The man page you linked to mentioning dualhead support is for xf86-video-ati. It is only accessible from the git history of xf86-video-mach64 because those drivers used to live in the same source tree.
I can try to help with DRI if that's still not working for you.

  • HOWTO Configure this $+%#& ATI rage Mobility 9700?

    Hi all !
I bought a wonderful laptop. all works great instead of WiFi and my ATI rage mobility 9700.
for the wifi issue, I have time but I need my ATI Card 'cause I now writing openGL application.
This is what I did :
    -- pacman -S ati-drivers and pacman -S ati-drivers-module-kernel26
-- I Configured xorg (I lanched fglxconfig (or something like that) and I copy in my xorg.conf the change.
    -- I added fglx in my rc.conf
-- No problem when launching X
    BUT :
-- mplayer doesn't play in full screen any more
-- xine doesn't work any more
-- And I do not have acceleration (foobillard loaded but he's verrrry slow)
-- But I can write OpenGL application if they are not accelerated.
the problem is : I need xine or mplayer and I want to play game :-p
What can I do to configure this ATI card ?
    Thanks for advance,
    Namlook :-(

    ibeRtus;
You have been kind to attempt to help this old man (79) with fine suggestions but they haven't provided a solution to my problem.
I have just finished reading the forum Documentation Discussion...ATI Radeon &Kernel2.6 -Updated.
This forum post has 208 replies, 14 pages and 29,564 views and its all about the ATI fglrx install.
I have generated an observation of this mayhem, which states that one must hand-make one's own kernel(no stock kernel will work with the "fix").  This observation is listed in the NOOBIE forum.
I do expect that the ATI fix will be necessary in the next pacman -Syu kernel download as well.
I am sending my ATI cards back to ATI in disgust.  Archlinux is from Canadians and ATI is from Canada!!!! Doesn't speak well for ATI.
I am trying everything that applies to kernel2.6.10 in archlinux0.7CD install and find no reference to that install with respect to ATI modules.
My best advice is to dump ATI and I am taking my own advice!!!!
    Thanks much for your suggestions.
I did try your suggested hyperlinks and reported the same errors occured.
I am looking forward to a better video experience with a new video card!

  • ATI Rage Mobility Driver problem

Hello. I managed to succesfully install Arch Linux on a old Acer TravelMate 732TXV. To put things in perspective, that's from the Win98 era. I am having some difficulty getting acceleration enabled. So far, I have managed to get a working graphical display using the xf86-video-vesa 2.3.2-1 package. I am trying to figure out if there is a better driver I should be using instead.
The output of 'lspci | grep VGA' is "01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x (rev 64)".
I have tried xf86-video-ati and xf86-video-r128(only one driver package installed at any given time) but neither one worked for me. Only vesa. I read some other threads from years ago where people were asking about the same thing and some of the threads were non conclusive and others posted results that I didn't fully understsand such as this website.
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=29918
That thread isn't exactly recent though, so I don't know how relevant it even is. What do I have to do to get acceleration working?
One last thing that might be relevant is that I have no way of installing Arch Linux directly on the laptop because it has no wifi capabilities and I don't have physical access to the router or modem. I have been using my other laptop to install Arch Linux to a flash drive. Then I am booting from the flash drive on the target laptop (which required a live-cd boot manager) to test things (I plan on copying the flash drive over to the hdd after I get it set up right). I'm not sure if that could effect this issue or not.
I don't mind if I have to downgrade some packages if that's what I have to do. This is basically just going to be a gimp machine.

WonderWoofy wrote:Why not use your other laptop to connect to wi-fi and then connect the old laptop to the newer one via ethernet cable and share the connection?  Wouldn't this be much more optimal?
Can I do this with just an ethernet cord and 2 laptops? I'm also not really sure if my ethernet cord works.

  • Compaq Armada M700 & ATI Rage Mobility

Hi. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could help. I installed Solaris 8 on my Compaq Armada M700 notebook and have had endless trouble getting the display drivers to work.
Does anyone know of any available driver for the ATI RAGE Mobility-P AGP ? I have had to resort to using RedHat Linux which does have drivers for the time being ...

You can go to www.xig.com ,as far as i knew , solaris doesn't support

  • ATI Rage PCI Card is stuck on an Unsupported Res

Hey Folks, I have a G3 B&W PowerMac with a ATI Rage PCI Graphics card that is stuck on an unsupported monitor resolution. I was playing with the settings when I accidently changed the res setting to one my monitor couldn't use. Now the resolution will not change no matter what I do. It all started when I did what I stated above so I did a reinstall after I tried to delete the pref file to fix the problem. I was able to do this from the install disk. My problem is now no matter what I do before I even see Happy Mac the monitor tells me the signal is out of range. I'm going to do a test on the monitor just to check it but I don't think that's what it is. Maybe the Card is Caput? Any ideas? I have a feeling I'm going to have to borrow a CRT to see what's going on. Any ideas or suggestions? Anyone know any other compatible cards? I right now have the 128 Rage. Thanks!

As Grant indicates, there's more than one prefs file that may be at work. The two most probable are Display Preferences and Monitors Preferences (the second is in a folder by the same name - throw away the file inside that folder).
In some cases, particularly with older CRT monitors, it is possible to reset the PRAM in the monitor, too. If your monitor has separate power and video cables, you can try resetting the PRAM in the monitor itself. To do this, power everything down, disconnect the video cable from the Mac. Then turn the monitor on, wait 15 to 20 seconds, then turn it off; wait about 10 seconds, then repeat the cycle, 3 or 4 times. Then reconnect the video cable and boot back up.

  • [SOLVED]bad video performance in mplayer

I have dual-core 1.4 ghz core duo on my laptop and 32 bit system.
When I try to play h264 encoded files mplayer says:"Your system is too SLOW to play this!".
I noticed that only one core is loaded during playback.
That's why I want to play video on both cores.
    This option
    -lavdopts threads=2
does not help(it's supposed to make more threads for h264 and mpeg1,2).
CPU load is still mostly on one core.
And when cpu load is high framedropping starts.
Is there someone who tested mplayer on multicore system ?

Read the latest news item (2009-02-20) on MPlayerHQ. ffmpeg-mt works pretty well on my lowly Intel Atom.

I have never got Solaris 7 to recognize a pcmcia card. What I finally did was get a Xircom parallel port ethernet card. That works. Your error message means Solaris never found the card.

  • Ati-driver config wth Rage mobile [SOLVED: xf86-video-ati]

    [sorry, double-posted in contributions board]
I take the opportunity to thank cerebral & iphitus for all the hard work they've done in providing nice & workin with Xorg7 ati-drivers to a lot of guys
Even so, I can't get them to load on my small Dell Latitude L400 laptop.
    - I installed Xorg7 strictly following the (brand) new wiki, then configured xorg.conf (adding synaptics & giving Xorg -configure a try).
    - Installed ati-drivers & ~-arch (8.22.5-3 & ~-2), but when I wanna load fglrx, here's what I get :
    # modprobe fglrx
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.15-ARCH/video/fglrx.ko): No such device
Adding fglrx to rc.conf (also tried to add to mkinitrd.conf "ADD_MODULE=") didn't help, showing the very same message @ boot time.
Also launched aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf but X still did not start.
Any help would be very welcome.

  • ATI Rage bug#308485

    Hello,
I get this EE: r128(0):No DFP Detected error setting MTRR Invalid argument 22
Reading Google I get DFP is digital flat panel? I have a CRT monitor?? Seems there is a bug in this driver or Xorg. and a fix but don't know.

    back again,
Ok , here's some more info. I got a little frustrated trying things and I wanted to make sure that everything was clean so I've reinstalled.  I've got X running with TWM. 3 Xterms start when it starts, I've tried ctrl+alt+backspace and it won't exit. I've found a way to kill it ctrl+alt+F2 .
I'm using X.Org X Server 1.6.1.901 (1.6.2 RC1) this is my new error : EE failed to load module "ati" (module does not exist,0)
and get the same for "fbdev". I installed xf86-video-r128 for my ATI rage r128 card. I don't have the error I had before HOWEVER in the beginner's guide it clearly states as of 1.6 you shouldn't need one? or something like that.
I'm a newb so I don't have a clear understanding over modules yet but I saw that it stated the new module init tools required the conf file to be moved is this the possible reason? I also did a lsmod and didn't see either fbdev or r128 or ati listed are they listed somewhere else as I know I installed the package and I saw the fbdev package installed also? thanks

  • HOW TO ATi Rage 128

    Hello,
I've posted a few topics about my ATi Rage 128 card... all with minimal help. Unfortunatley there doesn't seem to be anybody out there that knows how to use the Video card... I want to know how to use the inputs on the card? Can I use them as video capture tools? Should i, instead of trying to get this to work, just upgrade to a radeon card??? Thanks in advance,

There are no current video cards (with engines newer than the ATI Rage 128 that allow video input), the newer cards only have S-Video, DVI and VGA output. Using them is simple. Plug in the desired device and boot your machine, at least thats how it should work.
As far as I know, the Rage 128s video input is the only supported under OS9 or earlier. As for output, it works just like any other graphics card, although I think it only supports one screen at a time, but I could be wrong.

    So this is my story:
I have an Acer Aspire Laptop with a ATI x700 Mobility graphics card. A couple of days ago I installed Arch for the first time. I installed the "xf86-video-ati" package and compiz-fusion and it worked great. Then I managed to break my system to unusability and decided to reinstall. In the meantime there was an update for xf86-video-ati (from 6.8.0-4 to 6.9.0-5) and now I have some quite annoying performance issues with compiz: maximizing/unmaximizing as well as unminimizing a window (so I assume everytime it has to load a new window into the memory) takes like 2 seconds (while working perfectly smoothly before).
I tryed the options suggested at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI … nce_tuning but without success. Since I use exactly the same xorg configuration as before I can only speculate that it has to do something with the package update (maybe some option that was enabled by default before now has to be manually set?). I also tried the catalyst drivers but performance was pretty much the same.
Anyways, here are the relevant parts (so I think) of my xorg.conf file
    Section "Module"
    Load "glx"
    Load "dri"
    Load "drm"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "** ATI (generic) [ati]"
    Driver "ati"
    Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
    Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,AUTO"
    EndSection
    Section "DRI"
    Group "video"
    Mode 0666
    EndSection
Any ideas what I could do to bring back compiz at the speed that my graphics card already proved to be capable of are very welcome

I think I just experienced the same problem with my x800gto.  It was very slow to toggle between vertical/horizontal/full maximizations.  I tried changing the default acceleration method from XAA to EXA.  This seems to have solved the problem, and now my wobbly windows change size with butter smoothness.  The changes I made were to add
    Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
under the device setting.  There reason you need no such option for XAA is because, to my undestanding, XAA is the default.  Making this change means you should also comment out
Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true" #needed for aiglx
    since it is now irrelevant.
Since you also use an ATI card, I will suggest configuration options that work well for me:
    Option "AGPMode" "4"
    Option "GARTSize" "64"
    Option "EnablePageFlip" "True"
    Option "ColorTiling" "True"
Good luck.  Hope this does the trick for you.

  • Solaris 8 - 16MB ATI Rage Ultra 4X AGP Video

    Hi,
Has anyone tried to get Solaris 8.0 (Intel) to recognize the 16MB ATI Rage Ultra 4X AGP Video driver for a Dell Dimension 4300S P IV? We've installed Solaris and have it running however, the video configuration that we are using is not the best.
Just wondering if anyone has had any luck.
    Kevin

If you do just have a different revision, you can do the following:
    - use prtconf -v to find your graphic card. Note down the values given in the line after it (something like this: pci104c,ac15)
    - now locate your graphics card in /etc/driver_aliases and in /boot/solaris/devicedb/master. You need to add a new line to those files with the values you wrote down from prtconf. Looking at my laptop just now, you may get away with just /boot/solaris/devicedb/master for your video card.
