[SOLVED] The terminal in the Arch installation

I've notice that the terminal in the Arch installation has interesting features: the TAB autocompletion shows lots of information, typing a command and using up/down arrow only navigates through the history of this command... I love it. I'm using Arch with LXDE and its lxterminal does not have those features. Is it possible to install the Arch-installation terminal in LXDE? Or maybe adapt lxterminal someway? Thanks.

[solved] Cannot install grub on Arch installation!

I'm trying to install Arch on my new Laptop. Almost everything works fine until I come to the point where GRUB will be installed (to the MBR). Installaton fails and I'm told to have a look on tty5 for error messages. Doing so I read:
grub> root (hd0,3)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
grub> setup (hd0)
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition
grub> quit
AnyIdeas what I could do?
By the way, I'm installing the 64Bit Version 0.8 on a computer that currently runs "bad, bad Vista". I'm going to kill Vista anyway, sooner or later, but I wanted to have a try on getting them both on one computer. Might that be a problem?

The layout preset by the factory is the following:
sda1: some sort of windows configuration backup blabla
sda2: Vista System
then there is roughly one gigabyte of free space then
sda4: which was a preset ntfs partition for data
I decided to turn 4 in arch root partition, leaving everyting else unchanged for an instance (no additional swap/boot partition).
By the way, I tried to install Grub directly on partition 4 (it is an ext3 now), too afterwards, which failed with the same error.

HT201442 When I try the Terminal fix, the Apple line does not appear.

Can I write in the whole line, or is there another way to attempt this? I'm getting this Error 3194 trying to update an Iphone4 5.1.1 on Mac Intel 10.5.8, with the most up to date Itunes 10.6.3

It isn't possible to update an iPhone 4's iOS version from Mac OS X 10.5.8. It also isn't possible to sync the device with 10.5.8 if its iOS version is updated from the device itself.

Is there any way to enable SSH via Terminal in the OSX Installer utility list?

Hi guys, I've messed up my install a little on my internal HDD.. I can't boot into OSX as I keep getting kernel panics on boot. I was just wondering if there's any way I can SSH into my Mac Pro via the Terminal on the OSX Installer Utilities list.. I have a Macbook Pro to SSH from but I need a way to enable SSH via that Terminal "-bash-3.2#"..
I've tried to use the systemsetup -setremotelogin on command but I know SSH requires login keys and as I have no idea what can be used as those keys for the OSX Installer version of Terminal I have no idea how I can enable SSH..
Tried some sudo commands but as I guess it runs at a completely different level to sudo it won't actually recognise the sudo command..
Any help would be greatly appreciated guys, if you need me to post any info or results to help then just let me know.

If your Mac cannot boot to the OS X installation then you will not be able to set up the SSH (Remote Login) sharing service. The OS X installer does not support any of the system's sharing services. Technically it does have the sshd daemon (server process) that you can set up to accept a connection; however, this will not give you any additional benefit.
The only reason to SSH into the system would be to get to the Terminal command prompt anyway, which is available when you boot to the Recovery HD partition and choose Terminal from the Utilities menu. If you were to set up SSH and log in, you would still only have the functionality provided by the Terminal in the Utilities menu, and not have access to your Mac's full OS installation.

Is it SAP BSP application or custom?
If its custom,check whether you are using any MESSAGE statements. Handle all the Exceptions from Class/Methods/Function module to avoid the Dump.

Import and trust a self-signed CA certificate from the Terminal

Hello there,
i have a problem: I would like to import and trust a self-signed CA(root) certificate from the Terminal to the System.keychain.
My request is to create a installation script to install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client and the needed certificates.
For the import i have used the following command:
 sudo security import certificate.cer -k "/Library/Keychain/System.keychain" -A
 The Option "-A" says:
Allow any application to access the imported key without warning (insecure, not recommended!) <- From the Mac Developer Library
The command reportet: 1 certificate is importet ... but ... the certificate is not trusted.
What do i need to do to set this certificate as trustworthy at the terminal?

I had entred the following command (see the last argument):
 sudo security add-trusted-cert -d -r trustRoot -k "/Library/Keychains/System.keychain" "~/Downloads/mycert.cer"
... and i get the following message:

Today i changed the last argument to:
 /Users/User/Downloads/mycert.cer
and its run.

BACKGROUND:
User type was application consultant and was prompted by business test users that this type of user should be allowed to create issues in issue management but not allowed to delete issues in issue management. Only Project Managers should. Removed the 06 delete authorization from CRM_ORD_PR auth_obj and instead of getting "you are not authorized" error message (what is expected) user is thrown to the below exception page:

Installing apps from the terminal

Hi everyone,
I would like to know how it's possible for the terminal in Linux to find the correct app just based on the name. For instance, if I put in "firefox" then it knows to install that app. But what if someone on the web made a malicious file and called it "firefox?" Wouldn't the terminal run the risk of installing that instead?

2. How would that happen?
But can't the terminal install anything off the web?
I know that you are new to Arch, but this is coming across as either wilfully ignorant or plain trolling. Please--as has already been pointed out to you politely--read the documentation and desist from asking these sorts of inflammatory/inane questions.

After using the terminal,wireless connection is gone

Yesterday I was looking online to see ''how can I transfer pictures,files from my Nexus 7 tablet to my desktop computer with the usb cable''..
I've found several support forums like this one I'm using right now,someone has already asked a question like mine so I followed the best answer,
I typed the commands in the terminal as the helper suggested,then I restarted my desktop pc,after that it didn't connect any more,it connects wireless usually,but since yesterday no connection:(

Battery info in the terminal...

According to this article at MacFixit you can get info about your battery in the terminal using the following command.
ioreg -w0 -l | grep Capacity
When I type this in terminal I get something that says
usage: ioreg [-b] [-c class etc...
where options are:
-b show object name in bold
etc...
I was looking for the info like the article shows. Does anybody know how to obtain this info?

This Syntax works for me. i think that you not type correct. But, you could try this: ioreg -p IODeviceTree -n battery -w 0 | grep IOBatteryInfo.

What does the terminal do

When I open my Mac the terminal lists the time and date. I am finding another time and date, usually a few minutes after my initial log-in. Am I being Hacked?

Doesn't mean a thing.
First time I opened it since starting up today, it gave the time of 9:58. Two minutes behind what the clock on the desktop said. Closed Terminal and immediately launched it again. Then it gave the nonsense time of:
01:11 on ttys000

I broke the terminal

Hey guys, I have a major issue with the terminal, I'm afraid I broke it ><.
Anyway, I was learning how to compile flash code using the terminal and the flex sdk. The tutorial had me add a path to the .bash_login file which pointed to the flash compiler. That way I wouldn't have to type out /Developer/SDKs/flex_sdk/.... etc to get to the compiler everytime I wanted to compile code. So I added the path using nano ~.bash_login, now whenever I open the terminal, a program called xquartz also opens. I get two messages on the terminal "Could not init font path element /Library/Fonts, removing from list!", and "Could not init font path element /System/Library/Fonts, removing from list!". I can type into the terminal, but nothing I type does anything, as if it's currently working on a process. If I force-quit xquartz, the terminal says process completed, and won't let me type anything. Is there anyway to somehow reset the .bash_login file without using the terminal since it's broken?

PATH contains colon separated directories where the directories contain executable commands.
What utility did you use to edit the .profile? The file must be a line feed terminated file. And the last line should end with a line feed Not all editors honor that rule.
file $HOME/.profile
It shold come back
.profile: ASCII English text
If the output says CR line terminators, or CRLF line terminators, then the file does not have proper line feed terminated lines.
If you want to post the contents of your .profile, you can do that by enclosing it in
where the {code} statements will protect the contents from the forum messing with its contents.
Did you try rebooting to clear the hang situation?

The case of the unbootable Macbook Air running Lion

I upgraded to Lion without issue on release day. This is a previous gen Macbook Air with all options including upgraded processor that ran Snow Leopard with no issues. It's literally a month and a half old.
Last night I closed the lid just as the battery was about to die; this morning, I had some trouble waking it up and connecting it to my monitor. A short time later I unplugged it and relocated to a coffee shop to work, and I couldn't get it to boot past the gray screen with the spinner. After several restarts and a bit of futzing around I booted into the Recovery partition and ran Disk Utility. Basically...
1) Disk Utility can't fix the issue, and tells me to back up my drive, format and reinstall.
2) I went to an Apple Store where the suggested solution was just to replace the drive. I let them order the part, but kept the machine to try and do some diagnostics of my own (since they really didn't do any).
3) I can see my boot partition from in the Terminal in the recovery partition, but trying to recover files onto an external drive is a no go. I get messages about not being able to copy "extended attributes" and the copies never finish successfully.
Basically I'm up a creek. I have some backups but hadn't had a chance to do one this morning before all this went down. I'm also having issues getting the Lion installer to even run. All in all, this is a mess. There must be some way to fix what's wrong with the disk but I have no idea how. Not having an optical drive makes booting into Disk Warrior a challenge.
I'm hoping someone else out there has had a similar issue with Lion and was able to resolve it. Right now, my pet theory is that my MBA had some issues as it was writing the contents of RAM to disk and it now has a corrupted boot record. There are inconsistencies on the boot volume but of course Disk Utility can't fix them. Any help is much appreciated!

I'm very sure that if bought the MBA from Apple oran Apple Retailer you would get pretty quick satisfaction. I know both my lcal Apple Retailer and the downtown Apple store would provide me a new MBA right away.
I'd go back to teh folks that sold it to you as a starter.
