[Solved] Thinkpad "Access IBM" key unrecognized by system

Hi,
I just updated 'udev' package. After reboot, "Access IBM"/"ThinkVantage" key on R52/X220 cannot be recognized by system (both in X and in TTY) anymore.
I tried to use `xev` to grab these key, no reply at all. Previously these key were automatically recognized by system and assigned as "XF86Launch1"

[SOLVED] Remote Access to a home Arch system behind the router.

Hello,
I am trying to remotely access my home Arch system from school. I did try doing something and this is what I did:
1. Used DynDns and NO-IP to setup a free domain, I thought NO-IP script was easy to run so I tested this on NO-IP.
2. I then installed Openssh.
3. Then I have setup the Port forwarding on the router to point to my ssh port (change from 22).
4. I tried to ping, the domain name from NO-IP with no response.
What I want to ask is... is there any better way of doing this?
I dont need a desktop access, simple ssh should do for now.

OK, I have solved this by this process. Will work only if the router supports the DynDNS. I am assuming that you have created a DynDNS account, its free for 2 domains. I also had to make my computer use STATIC IP from my router, just specify any IP address outside the DHCP range.
1. On the router, add the details about the DynDNS account. On my Belkin Router, I had to go to Firewall -> DDNS -> DynDNS and give the details and also enable it.
2. By doing the above step, we don't have to install the client for DynDNS.
3. On the router again, setup the port forwarding, again (on my Belkin Router) go to Firewall -> Virtual Servers -> Add the IP and the port numbers, I had to use the same number for both the incoming and the private port, though for other routers the number can differ?
4. On the computer, I installed the openssh and then changed the login port to the one specified in the router for forwarding.
5. Make the router and ssh logins as safe as possible. I understand that opening the router is not safe so I have to warn you.
I can now login using my DynDNS domain name from anywhere woohoo!

[SOLVED] Thinkpad T430 brightness keys broken after firmware upgrade

Hi.
I've upgraded the firmware on my Thinkpad to version 2.51. Since that I'm unable to change the display brightness via the Fn-Keys on the keyboard. What still works is writing values to /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness but of course that's not how it should be.

Awesome, the acpi_backlight=vendor kernel command line parameter actually fixed it.
Does anybody know what exactly has changed and why this in necessary now?
Update: If you do this, you'll get error messages like this in your log/dmesg every time you press a brightness key:
kernel: thinkpad_acpi: unknown possible thermal alarm or keyboard event received
kernel: thinkpad_acpi: unhandled HKEY event 0x6050
kernel: thinkpad_acpi: please report the conditions when this event happened to [email protected]
The kernel command line parameter acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" also works and seems to be the better way to fix this.

tl;dr: Firmware update introduced 101 brightness levels even though the hardware only supports 16 but Windows 8 requires this. Reducing or increasing the brightness by one doesn't change anything at all so the firmware will still report the old value as the new brightness thus it'll never actually change the brightness. But if you explicitly tell the firmware that you're not Windows 8, it will only report 16 brightness levels and everything works fine. Lenovo, seriously?

Hi Tom. I just went through the same issue with my T42p. After uninstalling/downloading/reinstalling the Access IBM software it still didn't work so I found my way here. At first my visit didn't seem promising but I did a search of the forum for Access IBM and found a post in which somebody suggested installing the ThinkVantage System Update utility. I did that, rebooted and accessed the utility through the start/programs menu and installed 3 critical updates, rebooted again, et voila, Access IBM is fully functional. I've since gone back there a couple more times and am in the process of doing a fairly large download of optional updates. It appears to be a cool utility that even allows for setting up automatic updating. Kudos to whoever posted that link.

At least I'm fairly sure this is where I went to download the thing. Took a couple of tries to successfully flash the bios but all seems fine now. If you do decide to do this and also to flash the bios do yourself a favor and have your machine plugged into your AC adapter with a fully charged battery *before* you start that particular drill.

Access IBM button doesn't work

For some reason my Access IBM button doesn't work. I'm not sure if it has ever worked. This is a refurbished ThinkPad R50, Windows XP Pro. Is there any way to fix it? Thanks.....

Hi,
in case you just want to have back to F11 option by system startup, then all you need to do is following:
- check if you have "Rescue and Recovery " application installed
- If yes, then uninstall it
- if not, then go to Lenovo.com and download the latest version of Rescue and Recovery
- once it's downloaded, simply install it
This installation will modify also the MBR of your system and the F11 option will be present again. Although it might not create a physical partition, but it will instead create a virtual patition, but you will have the F11 option back.
IMPORTANT: In case you have already captured some backups using Rescue and Recovery, then DONT! uninstall it, just reinstall RnR .

T42p + Access IBM - my mouse fails-only use TAB and arrows? XP desktop

Suppose to be like day one here, my Thinkpad T42p but when I press the BLUE button or the Access IBM Icon
my mouse fails-I can only use TAB and arrows and I am NOT in the post bios, I am in the XP desktop.
I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but no help, same with USB mouse, same with touchpad and same with the red
pointer button mouse.I was almost SURE that the other Thinkpads, same models, would have mouse ability.
How do I fix this mess? What happened ? Help !! Have you tried to use that tool with no mouse ? Aggggggh !

Download a Parted Magic CD ISO-file and burn it on a CD-ROM.
Boot from CD-ROM and run the partition tool.
Left-click the 1st Partition, select "Manage flags" and mark "boot".
Reboot the computer after removing the CD-ROM.
To remove the drivers and tools use "Start"- "Programs " - "Access IBM" - "Program for installing/removal of ThinkPad-Software" (or similar - i only know the german terms). - Later Thinkpads used the "Software Installer"
At the beginning of this year i had set up one of my R51 with the recovery CDs and ran all Windows Updates. - Everything worked fine then.
Just for fun and to learn the effects concerning the system stability, i installed Thinkvantage System Update and updated all drivers and Tools. Some updates didn't work.
Result:
- lower performance
- wireless didn't work anymore
- sometimes a blue screen running R&R
After that i recoverd the R51 again and removed all Access IBM tools and drivers with the "Program for installing/removal of ThinkPad-Software". Running TVSU then lead to a better result but not very satisfying.
The differences of the old driver and tools - versions to the newest is too big. A lot of registry entries and many files will be kept after removing the old drivers and Access IBM - tools.
The best result you will get using one of the following ways:
recover from CD/R&R-partition and keep all TVT drivers and tools
do a clean install from a Windows CD and install drivers and software after running all Windows Updates (only 1 GBit ethernet or wireless Lan- driver installed) and then use System Update or manual install

Missing Recovery Partition and Unrecognized File Systems

So, a long time ago I accidentally deleted my recovery partition and have recently been trying to fix it so that I can upgrade my OS to Mavericks. After browsing around here I found the Recovery Partition Creator 3.7 and used it to create a new recovery partition. Using the diskutil list command everything seemed to be fine and it looked like the partition was successfully created so I tried reinstalling OS X Lion by holding command R at startup. Doing so brought up the internet recovery menu and I selected reinstall Lion which was still unsuccessful because "a recovery partition could not be created". So, I decided to check in disk utility to see what might be wrong and I used the disk utility debug command in order to access disk utility's debug menu and show all the hidden partitions. Now, looking at these partitions I see two hidden partitions: disk0s1 which is an EFI partition, and disk0s3 which is the Apple Boot Partition that was created by Recovery Partition Creator 3.7. After verifying the partitions, disk utility is telling me that both my EFI and apple boot partitions have unrecognized file systems, my Macintosh HD partition is fine. At this point I do not know what to do.
Below are photos of the diskutil list and of what disk utility is showing me for the two hidden partitions.
For reference I am running OSX Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) on a early 2011 13 inch Macbook Pro (Base Model).

Just an update, I went ahead and installed Lion again over the existing TM restored installation using the Lion Update file and at least File Vault is working. Interestingly, I still do not have a Recover partition so obviously something new for Apple Support to learn.

Accessing blobs in private container without Shared Access Secret key

Is there any way to access blobs in private blob container without Shared Access Secret key ? i mean any User / Role based security or domain level security i.e only our domain should be able to access blobs in private container etc.
Actually i don't want to append SAS key after each blob url to access it, i want my container to be private and also i want to access each blob in that container without SAS key
any way currently available or planned in future release ?

[Solved] gpg --list-public-keys (removed duplicate - see my last post)

I followed https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GnuPG#Create_key and https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Talk:Pacman-key, but I have ended up with my public key being listed twice. It's both first and last in the full list of public keys. Here is just mine:

How do I remove just the 2nd entry so that my public key is only listed one time?
I am afraid to start signing my packages (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/De … ge_signing) before I fix this issue.
Edit to add what I've tried so far:
gpg -o colin.gpg --export colin # to create a backup of my public key in a file called colin.gpg
cp pubring.gpg pubring-backup.gpg # in case I screw up pubring.gpg
gpg --import colin.gpg # hoping it will magically merge the duplicate, but it left both unchanged
gpg --delete-key colin # hoping it would delete both copies of the public key so I could import it again
It refused to delete the public key until I delete the private key which I don't want to do.
I also realized the export may have the duplicate as well. I tested that with:
gpg colin.gpg
And, sure enough, it listed my key twice.
Another edit: I have tried a lot and exposed a bug that I will try to submit upstream. Here is what I have done:

I have solved the issue. Since I had made a backup of .gnupg while there was a duplicate of the public key for "Colin Keenan", I realized the secret key in the backup was also for "Colin Keenan", so I didn't want to delete that one. I should delete "Colin N Keenan" by deleting the secret and public key matching it, then copy the resulting public key file to the backup, then restore the backup. That solved the issue, as follows:
gpg --delete-secret-key "Colin N Keenan"
gpg --delete-key "Colin N Keenan"
cp .gnupg/pubring.gpg .gnupg-backup
rm -r .gnupg
cp -r .gnupg-backup .gnupg
Here is a full outline of the commands I ran to eliminate the duplicate public key, in case anyone else runs into this very unusual problem:
cd # just making sure I'm in home directory so don't have to type dreaded ~
cp -r .gnupg .gnupg-backup
gpg --edit-key colin
gpg> adduid (added Colin N Keenan, original was Colin Keenan)
gpg> save
gpg --edit-key "Colin N Keenan"
gpg> 2 (because "Colin Keenan" was the 2nd uid)
gpg> deluid
gpg> save
gpg --delete-secret-key "Colin N Keenan"
gpg --delete-key "Colin N Keenan"

T41 Factory Partition and other Access IBM recovery

Hi,
I am using T41 2373 , 1 year back I reformatted C-drive and installed the windows Xp from CD from scratch, Now the Access IBM button does not work. I think i merged the factory partition as well .
Is there still a possiblity of recovering the factory partition , where we dont need CD for fresh installation and for drivers.

2) Port 39xx is free or not
