[SOLVED] Thinkpad T510 - Intel Core i7 - Integrated Graphics

Hi,
i recent bought a ThinkPad T510 4349-2RG with an Intel Core i7 M 620 built-in. There is also an NVIDIA  NVS 3100.
According to the Intel-Homepage, my CPU should have an integrated GPU (http://www.intel.com/products/processor … ations.htm).
The NVIDIA card just works fine with the latest binary driver. But I would also like to use the integrated Intel GMA (Battery life) and/or bumblebee.
The problem is that the Intel GMA dont get recognized by the kernel, but its also not visible in BIOS (normally there should be an option to select between "Intel integrated" "discrete" and "Optimus" - i've updated to the latest BIOS version 1.44). I double-checked this with a live CD of Ubuntu Linux 11.04 (also only NVIDIA).
Is there any option to get this running?

Sort of solved...
NOTE!
While almost all new ThinkPads have integrated Intel HD Graphics, on those ThinkPads with a Descrete NVIDIA GPU, the Intel GPU is disabled and cannot be enabled. There is no support for Switchable Graphics.
NOTE!
Contrary to the statement above, you can select the GPU in the BIOS of recent models with Nvidia Optimus, e.g. the T510 4384GEG. Windows seems to be able to switch between the GPUs, too.
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_HD_Graphics
I guess there is no way getting this to work, unless Lenovo unlocks this feature via BIOS-update.

  • T410: From Graphics: Intel GMA HD Integrated Graphics to Graphics: NVIDIA NVS 3100M with 256MB DDR3

    Hi, I have a Thinkpad T410. I bought it with integrated graphics card. Now i want to upgrade to the other one: Graphics: NVIDIA NVS 3100M with 256MB DDR3. Is that possible? thanks a lot

    You'd have to replace the motherboard.
    A better solution would probably be to get an eGPU; it's way way way faster.

  • [SOLVED] Thinkpad T510, freezes on battery power

    My Thinkpad T510 will freeze after anything from a few seconds to a few minutes after boot. I cannot do anything except hard power off the laptop. Sometimes it freezes at the login screen, sometimes at the desktop. So far it hasn't frozen on boot. I'm using Gnome 3 and GDM. Laptop-mode which is enabled on battery and AC power. I'm using the nvidia graphics card with proprietary drivers.
    I actually had a similar problem to this before, where it would freeze on battery power but much less often, usually anything from 10 minutes to hours after boot. It seemed like that problem had been fixed, but it has come back much, much worse.
    I wonder if the updated Nvidia 302 drivers are to blame, but I have no idea how I might go about finding out.

    EDIT: I found the laptop will still freeze once it had reached low battery power. To fix it properly, I backed up and then replaced the entire contents of /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/wireless with
    #!/bin/sh
    /sbin/iwconfig wlan0 power off
    I ran the laptop down to critical battery level and had no freeze.
    After hours of trawling Google, I *think* I've found a solution. At least it's been running for a good half hour now without freezing.
    To fix, open up /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/wireless
    Find the section -
    case $1 in
    true) wireless_powersave on ;;
    false) wireless_powersave off ;;
    *) exit $NA ;;
    esac
    and change it to -
    case $1 in
    true) wireless_powersave off ;;
    false) wireless_powersave off ;;
    *) exit $NA ;;
    esac

  • [G510] Intel HD 4600 integrated graphics and AMD HD 8570M

    Greetings!
    I have recently ordered a Lenovo G510 with an Intel i5-4200M cpu and an AMD HD 8570M gpu. While waiting for my laptop, I have been doing some research regarding any issues I might face (something that would make me really upset, since it took me forever to decide which laptop to purchase for my needs, university and work related tasks and some gaming, and it really cost me a considerable - compared to my budget - amount of money) and I came across a problem that people face when they upgrade to windows 8.1 or downgrade  to windows 7. As other users have stated, the "switchability" of the graphics malfunctions on every os apart from the pre-installed windows 8 (I'm not sure if it doesn't malfunction in that case as well). That being said, I want to ask whether such problems existed and if they persist. I suspect they are caused by driver issues, so they should have been fixed with the release of an appropriate driver.
    I'm eagerly waiting for anyone's response, thanks!

    A fast response could save me from buying a laptop that i won't be able to get to work, so bump
    I also failed to note that I want to upgrade to Windows 8.1 and I don't plan to stick with Windows 8, so if the gpu won't work after the upgrade it would be a dealbreaker for me..

  • IMAC 3.4GHz Intel Core i7 bootcamp  graphics driver error bluescreen

    Purchased iMAC 27" 3.4 GHz i7 because I wanted MacOS as development environment and Windows for playing games - thought I'd found the dream machine.
    Installed bootcamp, Windows 7, and finally bootcamp drivers
    Checked and updated Apple / Windows until no new updates available
    System operates fine under Mac OS, but frequently crashes under Windows 7 with bluescreen of death (graphics driver fault)
    This occurs when gaming (Batman Arkham City, or simply using Google Earth, IE)
    Updated driver for Radeon HD 6970M from ATI AMD website with same result.
    Windows 7 now recognised a new driver was available for Radeon HD 6900 series and updated (this has the most recent release date being late last year)
    System still has fault under Windows but driver appears to reset and continue without requiring a Windows restart (mostly).
    A quick Google reveals I am not alone with discussions concerning the indentical proplem spanning several years and apple machines - generally pointing the finger at the lack apple SMC temperature control under Windows. Is this true? If so I not sure if I should expect a solution from Apple.
    Is their a solution? I am reluctant to use third party software to control minimum fan speeds - mainly because I expect more from this machine (no matter which OS is running it).

    thanx Hatter,
    I see InputRemapper had fan control added, not sure if it will be suitable for later machines. I'll see if I can find anything newer.
    Last night used Windows for gaming - in the end the top edge of the iMac was to hot to touch - can't be good for the machine.
    Wonder why Apple don't include a fan control function as part of bootcamp - it would seem a critical function to protect the hardware.
    Is there a down side to running the fans harder (like wearing them out). I have been able tu use smcFanControl under OSX to raise the minimum fan speeds.before I reboot to Windows.
    smcFanControl has speeds for ODD,HDD, and CPU. Does the iMAC graphics card (HD 6970M) have its own fan?
    sorry lots of questions - to be honest kind of got hooked on Batman Arkham City ... and it runs very nicely, just a shame it cooks the hardware.

  • Laptop Lenovo ThinkPad T510 NTFDARI Core i7 620M opinion

    Hello guys,
    I want to buy this laptop with following configuration:
    Procesor: i7
    Model: 620M
    Frequency: 2660 Mhz
    Memory: 4096 MB
    Memory Frequency: 1066 Mhz
    Memory type: DDR3
    Storage: 500 GB Hard disk (7200 RPM)
    The laptop will be used to running complex queries in SQL Server (as client) and different applications in same time and for this is required a performant laptop. My question: is enough performant the above model for what we need? I know there are cheaper alternative from other brands but we have to use Lenovo. Is worth 2200-2300$ this model or can we find an i5 processor alternative (also cheaper) with same performance?
    Thank you for your effort.

    You can buy a new T520 with similar specs for that price.

  • GDM login corrupts X on Intel 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics

    After updating my kernel and a few libraries last night, I restarted my computer to experience Linux 3.1. After I logged in, GNOME-Shell appeared extremely corrupted. The screen was zoomed in, and would flash wildly between different, overlayed sections of the screen, wherever I placed my mouse. I could make out a few things, but depending on my mouse's position, the screen might repeat the same segment of the desktop several times (if I have a terminal up, I can only see it at a certain position, and I see the window three times spread horizontally across the screen). If I moved my mouse all the way up or down, I saw corrupted artifacts.
    Now, if I try to drop to a tty, the screen turns to a stark blue color, or grey (probably dependent on where my mouse was when I switched). I can easily switch back to the X display (Ctrl+Alt+F7), but it's still corrupted. If I do manage to pkill X using the terminal in the shattered X, the GDM login comes up again, but now with the same corruptions and distortions as in the Shell. All I can do is restart.
    So, last night, I did restart after this first try with linux 3.1, to see if it wasn't just a mistake. Somehow, GNOME-Shell came up completely normal, and I thought it was merely an anomaly. Turns out, when I started my computer this morning (and restarted it fifty times since), it turns out the Shell working after the update was the anomaly. I don't know why it didn't break again that single time.
    I'm currently typing from this same computer using just X (startx after logging in at the tty, no GDM). It appears normal, and playing videos and running composited applications (like Blender) works fine.
    I suspected it might be an issue with the kernel, but I don't know of any package I could downgrade to to test this. Even if I could, I'd rather use the current stable kernel. Does anyone know how I could further diagnose the issue, and if this belongs in Multimedia or Kernel instead of Applications & Desktop Environments? For now I can't really tell which piece of software is the culprit, but it seems likely it could be the Shell (even though the Shell wasn't updated before or during this incident).

    Turns out I may have found the culprit after all. After changing the gnome-control-center option under System Info to FallBack Mode, I was able to log in successfully... but only just once. Then, the same thing happened as before- every single log in resulted in a borked video output. However, when I start GNOME from .xinitrc with startx, Shell or no Shell, it consistently behaves as expected.
    So, I think it's safe to say that something which happens between the login screen and the session is destroying the video output in some nefarious way. This still might be vaguely related to the kernel, but at least we know it's probably either the kernel or GDM itself (most probably GDM). So, I'm going to uninstall GDM and delete pacman's cache so I can try to install the latest version from scratch, and see if that fixes the problem. If not, I guess I'll be logging in with SLiM or something similar until this gets ironed out.
    Quite annoying. Anyway, here's a short video of the breakage. Remember- once it's broken, only a restart will fix it. The glitches persist even when you head back to GDM, and ttys are always displayed as a solid, flat color, nothing more.

  • MSI Z77A-GD65 Intel 7 Series Motherboard Integrated Graphics

    Hi i'm a newbie to computer parts and the computer world in general on what does what. I'm only 15 but i'm looking to upgrade my Mobo and CPU I have found a bundle (MSI Z77A-GD65 Intel 7 Series Z77 Motherboard and Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40 GHz Quad Core Unlocked Bundle) on tiger direct and it looks like a good deal. But before I buy it I WAS going to upgrade my GPU before I were to get a new Mobo and CPU. I've done some research on the MSI Z77A-GD65 and I saw it has integrated graphics, but I don't entirely know what that is. I was curious if that's a graphics card and if so what it compares to. I have a Nvidia GTX 9800 graphics card that's fairly old now and I was wondering if a Mobo with integrated graphics acted as a graphics card and if so what it would compare to. If you want to know anymore specs about my computer let me know and i'll be happy to give them out.

    It's not the mainboard to have integrated graphics, it's the cpu. The Core i5-3570K has Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated. The mainboard only offers the output connectors to use it. All current generation Intel cpus have integrated graphics which can be used or not. The HD Graphics 4000 is not meant for gaming of course and would perform worse than your GTX9800 in a 3d game. With a supported mainboard (like the Z77A-GD65) the integrated graphics can be used along the discrete vga for Lucid MVP to better performance and gaming experience (see for more details: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=160519.0).

  • Imac Intel Core Duo 20' For Motion Graphics?

    Hi everyone,
    Just seeing what people thought about the Imac Intel Cores for motion graphics based work. Basically I need to run the Adobe suite (After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator and Final Cut Pro.) Also, down the track I will be wanting to put 3D Studio Max via boot Camp.
    How many of you are using this machine for motion graphics? And, is it as fast and productive as you would like etc?
    Cheers,
    James

    Depends on how intensive you plan on getting with the iMac. For the most part, it should run pretty well. When the Adobe products become universal they should fly. I currently run all the same software plus Maya on my iMac G5 2.1 GHZ w/o a problem, so they should run just as well on the intel (more so when all apps become universal). I actually plan on selling the G5 and picking up the intel version so I can run boot camp and 3D Max as as well.

  • Lenovo T410 - issue with i5 520M integrated graphics

    Hi,
    I recently installed Arch on a Lenovo T410. Following the guides in various wikis (Archwiki, ThinkWiki) I was able to configure everything without too much troubles...
    But I have the feeling that the the integrated graphics chipset is not perfectly handled. I get this feeling when I run glxgears:
    $ glxgears
    307 frames in 5.0 seconds = 61.224 FPS
    298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.490 FPS
    299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.688 FPS
    299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.688 FPS

    Any ideas or suggestions will be welcome, also I would like to know if there are any relevant resources on the internet concerning integrated chipsets and the implementation status of the linux drivers.
    Thanks,

    If your hardware is bleeding edge it's very likely to not yet be fully supported. In the case of Clarkdale/Arrandale i believe support is added in 2.6.33.
    I suppose you could find that information by searching the forum for clarkdale, by browsing http://kernelnewbies.org/Linux26Changes or asking in irc / forums / usenet. But tbh i can't find much information about Clarkdale either.
    For comparison though, i have ~800 fps on my Thinkpad X200s and 1100 fps on my i3-530 machine (Clarkdale) with kernel 2.6.32.10. Kernel 2.6.33.2-1 (testing repository) gives me ~800 - 900 fps.

  • Wrong integrated graphics driver

    Hello,
    My MacBook has an Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics chipset, but my XP-SP3 partition sees only a 965 chipset. Furthermore, When I am in XP, Intel's online driver-update tool claims that I have the correct and most up-to-date 965 driver. Has anyone heard of this problem? Am I the one who is wrong, instead of Windows?
    If this is asked and answered, please point me in the right direction. Also, tell me what information I need to post in order to help diagnose?

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
    the GMA X3100 is a part of the 965 chipset, so the informations from the online driver-updates are correct.
    See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA
    To my knowledge, when you use 'Control panel' - 'System' - 'Hardware' - 'Device Manager' you should get an entry for the X3100 when looking at the 'Video' section.
    (Not really sure, since I don't have a MB).
    Did you install the BootCamp Drivers from the Leopard OSX DVD and used the Driver update 2.1 from Apple ?
    Regards
    Stefan

  • MacBook Pro Intel Core i7 4GB hangs why???

    Any solutions?

    I see, well, you will have to take it there for a check-up, it would be returned to you in 2 days if theres no problem with it. But if something is wrong, it will stay for a much longer time. I m not sure about your warrant but I could check with my harware team to see what the problem might be, I work for AMD, so i dont really deal with intel core nor nvidia graphic cards. But I would love it if you decide to switch to AMD graphics and cpus

  • Thinkpad T420, Integrated Graphics, Dual Monitors

    Warning: this isn't really a problem thread. I've looked and looked but can't find a definitive answer for my question.
    I'm seriously considering a Thinkpad T420 for a new work laptop. I've heard great things from many people, but the most important question has yet to be answered: if I get one with integrated graphics (Intel HD 3000), will dual monitors work with VGA and DisplayPort with a DVI adapter? It's crucial that I'm able to use two external monitors simultaneously and I'm sick of using TwinView because I can't rotate a monitor. Can anyone confirm that this works?

    according to tabook.pdf
    Intel HD Graphics 3000 in processor,
    external analog monitor support via VGA DB-15 connector and
    digital monitor support via DisplayPort (supports single-link DVI-D via cable 45J7915);
    supports dual independent display;
    Maximum external resolution: 2560x1600 (DisplayPort)@60Hz;
    2048x1536 (VGA)@75Hz; 1920x1200@60Hz (single-link DVI-D via cable 45J7915)
    So, it looks like the hardware is certainly capable of it.

  • Is The Intel HD Graphics 4000 And The Intel Core i3-3110M Processor Good For Premier?

    Dear Forums Members,
    Latley I've been looking for a laptop that can fit my video edting needs + some office work. What i need from Premier is the abilty to edit SD quality videos, my budget is not that high ( + I live in Israel where everything is more expesnive ).
    I've been thinking about the Lenovo IdeaPad G500 5938-9998 wich comes with a Intel® Core™ i3-3110M Processor and Intel® HD Graphics 4000 and 4GB RAM and 500GB Sata (5400RPM) Hard Drive.
    My Quastion is: will it be ok to edit SD videos in premier 6 or 5? and if not, wich premier IS good for this specific computer?
    Thanks ahead, Jonathan.

    Jonathan, If you mean the old Premiere 6 or Premiere 5, then those versions of Premiere are extremely old and severely outdated. In fact, Premiere 6 was released before Windows XP even came out. As such, you may have serious trouble running Premiere 6 (not to be confused with Premiere Pro CS6) on newer versions of Windows such as Windows 7 or Windows 8.x.
    On the other hand, if you mean Premiere Pro CS6 or CS5.x, then that planned laptop is too weak to handle much of anything (video editing related), especially since that i3-3110M CPU is only a dual-core CPU that's capped at 2.4GHz and that CS6/5 does not support GPU acceleration for any non-Nvidia or any integrated GPUs. As such, I second the responses suggesting the cheapo consumer version of Premiere, Premiere Elements (the current release is 12.0).
