I haven't messed around with anything except for installing everything and fixing up my config files.
Seems like HAL is crashing because of permissions but I even checked the paths and they seem to be fine:

I checked that the HAL user exists and has been added to the default groups, but that "???"-part is alarming.
    DBus starts up normally.
Networking and "lo" seem to be working fine as well, and I don't have iptables up.

tomk wrote:Update your system - xorg does not depend on hal anymore. hal is obsolete.
Ah, haven't been up to date on all the changes, it seems...
In the past I've had problems with the nvidia driver + Xorg without HAL, I think?
Anyhow, contrary to the Xorg page, I had no 20-nvidia.conf. I created that and now I'm able to startx without HAL but KDM doesn't work, the screen flickers when it attempts to start Xorg but then it crashes. Strange. Nothing in the Xorg logs either.
I'll have to see about that next, but it's nice to be able to get rid of HAL at least.

  • [SOLVED] PulseAudio Volume Control won't start anymore

    Hi!
As described in the title, PulseAudio Volume Control won't start from one day to another.
I have no clue where this could come from or what I could have done wrong to create this issue.
Here is how it looks like:
When I start it, it seems to be loading but after some time it just disappears and nothing happens.
I also have the same looking issue with KMix and Google Music Manager.
Do any of you have an idea where this could be coming from?
    Thanks for your help :-)

    Name : pavucontrol

They are all repository packages, NOT from the AUR. As previously mentioned, this is a fresh install, so I don't have any custom repositories. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Are these the mobile drivers from the nvidia site or from HP? Whichever ones they were, try the other. It's also possible that your windows updates applied a graphics driver update - that's usually a bad thing. Always get the drivers from HP or nvidia.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3 : Nautilus won't start from other application

    Hi everyone!
Ok I search everywhere and I found nothing. I have this problem for a long time for now. My interface is in french so I'll try to translate the message but they could be differente in an english gnome.
I can start nautilus directly from the console or from the menu, no problem. But when I connect a usb drive or any external drive it pop me : "Impossible to open a folder for 'usbName'. No application are register to execute this file".
Another exemple is when a download a file from internet and then from the browser I click "open the containing folder" it do nothing.
If a open Baobab and I right click a folder and "open folder" it pop me : "Impossible to open the folder 'folderName'. No viewer are install"
So well.... I really don't know what to do... Maybe it is in a kind of default application editor but well.. I find something that was kind of this but there was no option for the default system explorer.
    Help me please!!
Thank you ! Hope someone know what to do! :-(

right-click on a file / file-type that has no registered application, then click 'properties' and then navigate to the 'open with' tab ~ if there are no applications listed then click 'show other applications'... after that find the proper application to open a given file, then click 'set as default'.
this should solve your problem. The only one i am not sure about is the USB thing, but the rest are easily solved. Gnome by default will not automatically associate all mime-types to applications. you need to do some of this yourself.
for example; in order for .html files to open in gedit by default, I first had to associate .html to gedit, and 'set as default' ~ otherwise, all html (local files) automatically would open in Firefox.
    hope this helps

  • [SOLVED][ati catalyst]amdcccle won't start anymore

    Hey all,
I spent all the day working on my MSI GX60 equiped with
    [jledun@io0 ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Richland [Radeon HD 8650G]
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Neptune [Radeon HD 8970M] (rev ff)
Everything was running fine until today.
To show something to my son, I tried to run a VirtualBox machine but it couldn't because :
'Your machine tries to run 3D acceleration but 3D is not defined on your host' or something like that.
So I tried to run 'sudo amdcccle' or 'kdesu amdcccle', no way, it doesn't start.
I don't have any error displaying in my cli.
I just can kill it after a few minutes.
I've read somewhere on an ubuntu forum that it was necessary to install qt, so I did but it changed nothing.
I really need my virtual machines, that's windows 7 and XP clients, if I deactivate 3D acceleration in configuration, I guess windows won't like it...
    Help !

I followed wiki for uninstall catalyst, reboot, then clean install of catalyst, reboot, it's the same.
But I've found a way to make it work : disable lxdm and reboot.
Then I remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb at each boot, before running startx. Then I'm able to open amdcccle, check configuration, fglrxinfo gives :
    [jledun@io0 ~]$ fglrxinfo
    display: :0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 8650G
OpenGL version string: 4.3.12614 Compatibility Profile Context 13.25.18
If I reboot again, the problem appears again, then I kill X, remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb again and it works.
I'm going to see if the problem is the same with razor-qt.

  • [solved]Yet Another "X won't start" thread

I get the black screen when i try to startx. i followed the wiki entry to set up X, but it doesn't work. Now, what i want to know is, how do i go back on a fresh install to an older version of X, that *doesn't* use HAL?
Last edited by GypsyJoker (2009-11-28 01:05:05)

It happened to me too. I use LXDE and everything was fine until last X.org update (prior to today's) when the blank screen started happening after every restart. I discovered that if I edit /etc/xdg/lxsessions/LXDE/autostart file as root and close it, even without changing anything, not resaving the file, not doing anything to it, then I was able to enter to X with startx as always. Weird, isn't it?
Afortunately, today I've updated my x.org server and seems everything is fine again.

  • [SOLVED] KDM and KDE won't start

I just set up a new Arch install and I am new to this distro. I set up KDM to start automatically by putting it as the last thing in the rc.conf file, and I also tried the inittab method and both don't work.
What happens is my system boots into KDM for a half a second, and crashes back to the text login. If I log in as a normal user and try "startx" I get "could not start kdeinit4 check your installation". XTerm seems to work.
In my KDM log it doesn't show anything incriminating, it just shows that it started X and then closed X. I tried without an xorg.conf file, but the same thing happened.
I am hoping someone might have had this happen and know the answer?

  • [SOLVED] K Display Manager won't start up at boot

EDIT: I'm retarded. I hadn't even checked to see xorg-server was installed. It wasn't.
    Hi,
I just installed package group kde-meta for a full KDE installation including KDM, installed xf86-video-ati for video card drivers, and then ran:
    systemctl enable kdm.service
    systemctl disable getty@tty1
Now, when I start up, I just get the messages "Starting K Display Manager..." and "Started K Display Manager." but the X server doesn't start up at all. Those messages are left on the screen. Using 'systemctl start kdm.service' does nothing. Literally no output or anything.
What should I do? Also, I know there's not much information, but if you give me some commands I can get some logs. I just don't know where to look for them...
    Thanks in advance.

I've just been experiencing a similar issue. The local Apple Store just replaced my logic board (was overheating without secondary cooling when processor was under a full load, and the fans weren't kicking) for a little more trivial problem. Now that I just got it back, it ran for about 5 minutes before it spontaneously shutdown. I started it back immediately after that, and it went for only another couple minutes before it gave up yet again. After that, it just plain old wouldn't boot. Tried to reset the PRAM...wouldn't even get that far. Tried to reset the PMU...saw no change.
Whenever I try to boot it, I can hear the fan on the left start up and the hard drive attempt to spin up. Shortly after, it makes a subtle chirp-like noise and promptly shuts off. Mind you, I'm getting no display or anything 'cept these noises. I'm trying to get it to the point that I can run the diagnostics program from the OS X disc, but I think I'm going to be lucky to even get that far.
I'm thinking twice before taking my MacBook Pro to get serviced for something that isn't work-impairing now!

Among the major problems is being unable to get updates, because BITS won't start:
The server {4991D34B-80A1-4291-83B6-3328366B9097} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with the following service-specific error:
    Class not registered
The BITS service failed to start.  Error 0x80040154.
I'd really like to do a refresh of 8.1, or re-run the update from 8.0.   How to do either?
    thx

  • [solved] KDEmod4 won't start

    Hey everyone!
I was just installing Arch on my Desktop few moments ago and decided to give Kdemod4 a try,
but it simply won't start up showing me this error: (in a xtermlike environment)
Could not start kstartupconfig4. Check your installation.
Wondering how to solve this problem...?
So far concerning the installation everything worked quite fine...XServer works with xterm and hal fam and kdm were added to the Daemons array in rc.conf...
After I get back to the tty I also get these lines:
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/Type1, removing from list!
/usr/bin/startkde: line11: /usr/bin/kcheckrunning: File or directory not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line36: /usr/bin/kde4-config: File or directory not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line86: /usr/bin/kstartupconfig4: File or directory not found
But: when I DO have those files, namely kcheckrunnig, kde4-config and kstartupconfig4, in /usr/bin...
So seems like something went wrong there...it's just that I can't figure out what...
Thank for your help in advance!
    Cya

I suggest gamin instead of fam, and /etc/inittab to start kdm/gdm instead of rc.conf
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/FAM
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Login_manager
The kdm-thing does not work so far...but I'm workin' at it
    Concerning fam...I'll try that
onna assume you have nvidia since it rejects type1 paths...
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA
basically make sure theres no type1 path or dri stuff as the wiki says.
Nope it's an Ati Radeon HD3850 I got there...
Make sure you read about hotplugging if you havent...
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging
    Got that...
Make sure you installed kdemod correctly...
    http://chakra-project.org/download-kdemod.html
Is installed correctly and working with catalyst - didn't work with xf86-video-radeon(hd)...
Still as you can see there are some warnings in the Xorg logfile I have to work on.
Though kdemod4 now starts up upon an 'startx' I won't mark the thread 'solved' till I got everything working correctly...
Any suggestions upon improvement of my configurations are highly appreciated!
Thanks for your help so far AND in advance!

  • VMWare Workstation 10 won't start [solved]

So, I did a full system update and now VMWare won't start. I applied the netfilter patch on the wiki and that made it so the modules will compile(despite me using the stock kernel I encountered compiler errors). However, now I'm really stuck. When I try to launch vmware it just sits there and never does anything
This is the output I see:
    [earlz@EarlzWork ~]$ vmware
    Logging to /tmp/vmware-earlz/vmware-modconfig-1186.log
    And this is what's logged:
    [earlz@EarlzWork ~]$ cat /tmp/vmware-earlz/vmware-modconfig-1186.log

It will just hang at that command indefinitely, despite all the modules appearing to have loaded fine

    I am experiencing the same issue.  After you run vmware, do you still see the process running but nothing appears on screen?  Do a strace on vmware and let me know what results you obtain.  These are the last few lines of my strace;
    $ strace vmware
    open("/proc/meminfo", O_RDONLY|O_CLOEXEC) = 5
    fstat(5, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0444, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
    mmap(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7f1abf686000
    read(5, "MemTotal:        8106088 kB\nMemF"..., 1024) = 1024
    close(5)                                = 0
    munmap(0x7f1abf686000, 4096)            = 0
open("/etc/pki/tls/certs/ca-bundle.crt", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

    pause(
Notice the pause( ?  It appears vmware is waiting on something, though I am not sure what.   I am using kernel 3.12.1-3-ARCH.  When I rebooted yesterday is when I started encountering problems with vmware not loading.  The last time I rebooted prior to yesterday was March 11th.
    Here is a list of packages that I updated since the reboot on March 11th;

  • [Solved] Project64 (which runs via wine) won't start w/ an error

I'm on 64 bit arch laptop trying to run project64, but the app won't start.  I installed project64 from the repo and it pulled wine as a dependancy.  Upon firsst-run I was prompted to install wine gecko and hit the install button.  This froze and I force-closed the window which then prompted me to select a language.  I got a "Program Error" message saying that pj64 encountered a serious problem and needs to close.  I then found and installed the wine_gecko package, but this didn't solve the problem.
    The console outputs the following:
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0xffffffff at address 0x7cdb9eda (thread 0009), starting debugger...
    Someone please help me.

Make sure you have the correct lib32 drivers for your graphics card, since wine is a 32 bit app. For example,m for nvidia you need the lib32-nvidia-utils package. This seems to be more of a general Wine issue rather than an issue with project64 though, but hopefully installing the correct package should help. I maintain the project64 AUR package though, so I feel like I should do my best to help, and possuibly imporve my package too if something's wrong with it Also, if that doesn't work, try running this, it will give more terminal output that could be useful (by default it uses WINEDEBUG=-all to get rid of the extra debug info and stuff wine outputs by default, but it might be helpful here):
    wine "$HOME"/.project64/Project64.exe
Also, IMO, all the Mupen64plus frontends seem to be kinda crappy right now (cutemupen crashesd so I can't even try that one out...), but the one I'va had the best luck with is wxmupen64plus-hg, so give that a shot, though it does still have some issues sometimes, but it lets you configure the controllers and stuff, so that's good And if you felt like using it, you could install version 1.5 (it's in AUR too, but I haven't tested it), since version 1.5 has a GUI and it always worked great when I used to use that
