[solved] triple boot on mac with ubuntu

i have a macbook pro 5,5 if that helps, i installed ubuntu on the macbook with refit and i now want to install arch  as well. i discovered that i can not see any partitions after four on my mac and therefore can not have a boot partition for arch and ubuntu has the grub boot on its partition, my questions are should i and how do i add arch to ubuntu's grub and boot from there, or is there a better way that gets around the four partition problem.
i apologize if this has been asked before but my searches came up with nothing
thanks

You probably need to learn more about partitioning and partition types.  Read everything relevant here:
http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/gparted.html
Pay close attention to partition types and extended partitions.  You likely need to use an extended partition.
(Not sure why 40 people looked at this before me and nobody bothered to tell you the easy and obvious suggestion...nice.)

  • Installing Windows on Mac with Ubuntu

I am trying to triple boot windows, ubuntu, and osx. I have already installed Ubuntu on a partition using rEFIt and that all went very smoothly. I did that a while ago. Now I want to install windows but I am having all sorts of difficulty.
    1) Bootcamp doesnt work. A warning comes up at the very beginning saying "The startup disk cannot be partitioned." Well it already is. Is there any sort of work-around for this?
    2) When I dd the windows iso onto a usb drive, rEFIt does't even recognize it so I cannot boot the Windows installer.
I am pretty helpless right now. Any advice would help. I really don't want to uninstall Ubuntu. I could use Ubuntu to install Windows but I am not sure that would help. I really want this to work in a very simple unified way under rEFIt, only EFI is not recognizing my USB Windows Installer.
I dont have a CD/DVD drive on my new Macbook Pro, but perhaps I could get one and try burning a disk. Not sure if that would solve this issue or not. I am real need of someone who knows about this stuff.
    Thank you for your help,
    Chet

Hmm. I'd really like to avoid a virtual machine. I've always had bad experienced with them slowing down my machine. I'd really like to just be able to boot into windows from startup with refit. This doesn't seem impossible...
I'm going to try to use the installation disk via remote disc. I'd like to conclusively rule out everything else before deciding to use a virtual machine...
    Thanks

  • Triple boot in Mac OS X

I learned that dual boot is possible. Now, how about a triple one? I'm asking cause I'm now on Lion 10.7.5 to which I returned after resetting my MBP to factory, but planning to boot up into Mavericks (which I need for some of its newer features), thus having the two serving as my main OSes and testing Yosemite as the 3d one with Mavericks and Yosemite locating on external drive of 1TB. Is it possible to do a triple boot? Won't it kill my machine considering it's still running on 4 GB RAM?
    Kindest regards,
    I.S.

You can boot from any number of external drives. That is not "Triple" Booting. It's just booting to an external. Double and Triple booting would be the process of making non-native boot partitions on the same hard drive, like one Windows and Linux Bootcamp partitions.
You you can partition the external normally and put any OS X your mac can support on each partition. Hold down the Option key when you startup to choose which one to boot into.

  • How to Boot a MacBookPro with Ubuntu v10.10 on USB drive??

With Unbuntu v10.10 on my USB jump drive plugged into my MacBook Pro (OS X v10.6.6) & holding down the "alt" key during power-up, only the MacBook internal hard drive is available for selection.
Also tried holding down "command" + "option" + "F" + "0" during power up to access EFI but system boots as normal with no Bios or EFI settings available to change boot device. Plus using Statup Disk under System Preference shows only the MacBook Internal Hard Drive or Network as options, no USB.
Am I doing something wrong or is there another way to boot Ubuntu v10.10 from a USB jump drive on my MacBook Pro?

the easy step is boot linux with usb in a mac, the hard step is this run well configured, and you can run all features of you computer booting from a usb.
You cannot boot a MBR disc from USB, but you can boot an efi disc. You nees install grub-efi, and run it. If your mac is old, is possible that you cannot boot grub-efi from the efi boot particion (the first, that it is fomat in FAT32), and in this case, you need an HFS+ for boot grub-efi.
You can read this topic of ubuntu forums:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=995704
and in the grub web, has a wiki that you can learn how to configure the grub-efi and how to boot it in mac.
    Good luck!

  • [Solved] Triple Boot on MacBook Pro

    Hi all,
I'm trying to install archlinux with Mac OS X and Windows, even following this guide (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBook).
I partitioned the disk as recommended by the guide so now I have the following partitions:
    -Boot partition Mac
    -Macintosh HD
-Partition in which I am trying to install Arch
-Partition in which I successfully installed Windows
I followed the installation step by step, until the bootloader installation. I reboot to sync the partition tables in rEFIt, but it's written that I don't have to synchronize and shows dev/sda3 in HPS+ despite is in ext4.
The problem then is that I can't install Grub as suggested in the guide (the only option that shows me is installed in dev / sda in which the partition boot the Mac), so refit doesn't recognize the partition of linux and shows only mac and windows.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How to remove boot options while booting in mac with the options key

I've just installed windows trough bootcamp, but somethings went little bit wrong,
Everythings works fine, mac works and windows 7 works properly. But when i hold down the option key while booting i dont have the normal 3 options (Mac, Windows, Mac Restore). I now see these options (MAC, Windows, Windows, Windows efi, mac restore).
    MAC -> works fine
1e windows -> (error no operating system installed)
    2e windows -> works fine
3e Efi windows (boots into mac)
    MAc restore -> works fine
So is there an way to clean up these options?
    Thanks

You think someone will use Boot Camp Assistant?
EFI is / was always there. Sometimes it shows up (from using Disk Warrior).
Windows has its own 100MB system reserved as well that is the boot area.
I'd start with Lion Recovery, show hidden features and partitions, and check the health of all, and repair HFS volume.
Also try your Windows DVD and see if it sees a problem.

  • [SOLVED] Triple Boot on Macbook 5,5 kills my arch install

I am currently trying to get a triple boot working on my mid 2009 macbook pro. I have 3 seperate partitions set up so that i can just launch the OS's with rEFInd.
Problem is.. as soon as I get all of them installed and up and running. I will try to boot cycle all of them to make sure everything is working as planned.
i boot OSX, everything is good
i boot Windows 7, again good to go.
as soon as i boot arch AFTER windows it kills the install it seems. the system will lock up at
    starting version 217
    /dev/sda6: recovering journal
    /dev/sda6 clean, XXXXXX/xxxxxx files, XXXXXX/xxxxxx blocks
I am not quite sure how to find a log or anything since i cannot even boot into the system.
it ONLY happens after I boot into windows.
Already tested my ram per someone elses advice. everything turned out ok with that
the arch install works great if i only boot osx or arch.
    I am not using bootcamp
i could chroot in and look for the log im just not sure where it would be.
i will gladly post that as well if i can get the location

ended up finally figuring out the issue
Figured out I couldnt see what was going on was, because I had a kernel parameter set as quiet for some reason. So it was not showing me anything which led me to run across a blog online that described system lockups at boot.
Added this to the kernel boot parameters in my grub.cfg on the linux line. After I did that everything booted like normal.

  • [Solved] Triple Headed Xinerama Setup with 2 Nvidia Graphics Cards

I'm trying to get a triple headed setup working with xinerama (and awesome as my WM) and am more or less at a complete loss.
Ive tried assembling my own /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf from various wiki resources and manpages, which you can see at:
    http://paste.pocoo.org/show/467600
also the output of "lspci | grep VGA"
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 06c4 (rev a3)
04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 06c4 (rev a3)
I've never actually done anything vaguely like this before, and if there's something that'll just explain to me what all the options do with respect to xinerama and "zaphodheads" and whatnot i'd be grateful. If you can actually tell me how to fix it, that'll be absolutely wonderful.

    Greetings Jello-Raptor,
I just recently configured a 2 monitor set up using nvidia-settings.
    # nvidia-settings
This is the GUI way to do things and you can choose either TwinView (which gives you an extended monitor) or Xinerama (separate monitors but you can move between them).  I use the Xinerama with a nvidia card and it works great.  Once you go to multiple heads you wonder how you ever lived with out them

    Hi,
Yes it is. You may try this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide
I prefer to repartition entire disk and then install a fresh Windows 7. It takes two partitions. Then create an extended one plus a small partition at the end for swap but it's not necessary as computers today have enough RAM and swap is basically pointless.

  • T410: How to dual boot Win 7 with Ubuntu?

Ok, if this is what your asking; I have Win7 and I use the fingerprint reader to log into windows. I installed ubuntu using those steps listed above and it does the partition itself safely. And the fingerprint reader still works for windows. No issues. Just make sure (looking at picture 3 and 4) that you select install alongside others OS's, on picture 4 you can see a slider bar. The first section will show you your windows partition, the 2nd part is what you can move to choose how much space you want ubuntu to partition for itself. So no need to partition it your self.

  • [SOLVED] No boot on T420 with debian

    Hello everyone,
I search on google and on the forum but don't find any answer to my problem.
I have a lenovo t420 upgrade with my Vertex 3 SSD.
I install debian well, with grub on the master boot devicem but after rebooting, the thinkpad don't find any mbr or gpt. So I only have the menu to select which device to boot...
I tested with Legacy mode only... but still doesn't want to boot on the grub...
Any idea to help me please ?
    Thank you

Ok, another question, after setting the bios in legecy mode only, have you created a new partition table, and after that installing debian?
If you have worked in a previously formated partition it could be that it was a gpt partition table. With the legacy mode only bios, when you create a new partition table, it will create a mbr partition table instead of an gpt. Than grub should work.
i.e. ubuntu works fine, with legacy mode only, or with uefi only.

  • Triple Boot (OS X, Windows, Ubuntu[Linux])

Hi Apple users! I could use some help over here. Well, I want to install Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro but I want full power boot like how Windows run on Boot Camp. I have installed Windows 8.1 Pro using Boot Camp. I have 2 partition right now. Research I've done not I expected. I require/ need full power boot on Ubuntu. I don't want to use Parallel Desktop, VMware Fusion, VirtualBox and others apps that don't give enough satisfactory. If you require my specs, here you go!
    OS X Version: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4
Processor: 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Cards: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024MB and Intel HD 4000

Require full specs then my MacBook is MacBook Pro 15-inch Retina Display Mid 2012 & Early 2013)

Can't be done if you are using Boot Camp. Boot Camp will not work with multiple partions on the drive. Read the Boot Camp instructions.

  • [SOLVED] dual booting windows 7 with btrfs on grub-bios -- core.img

I am trying to install arch in a dual boot configuration with an existing windows 7 partition. I have everything from the beginner's guide done but the bootloader. When I run grub-install it tells me that core.img is too big.
Some googling tells me that this is relatively common with btrfs, and it seems the only work around is to switch to gpt mode and use a grub bios partition. But the info I've seen indicates that I need to use MBR mode to dual boot windows.
Is it safe to do this with windows? Is there another workaround? Or will I have to settle for ext4?
Last edited by jorenko (2013-06-09 03:53:24)

Well there's your problem, your first partition starts at sector 63.  With recent versions of windows and fdisk (and every other partitioning tool I can think of off the top of my head) things now align themselves correctly.  Also because there is now GPT, the first partition typically starts later as the GPT partition table will typically sit between the MBR and the first partition.
On a MBR partitioned system, grub2 will actually use the first 446 bytes like normal, but will then also use the space that is empty where GPT would sit.  This is why when you have a GPT partitioned system, it will require you to create a 1-2MB grub boot partition, as it needs somewhere else to put its bloat.  GPT actually still uses the MBR section, but simply creates one large partition covering the whole disk.  This is so that tools that are not GPT aware will not think that they have a whole free disk to use as they please.
For comparison, here is whe I get from fdisk:
    # fdisk -l /dev/sda
    sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda
    [sudo] password for curtisshima:
WARNING: fdisk GPT support is currently new, and therefore in an experimental phase. Use at your own discretion.
    Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes, 488397168 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disk label type: gpt
    # Start End Size Type Name
    1 2048 2099199 1G EFI System EFI System
    2 2099200 252166798 119.2G Linux filesyste arch-btrfs-1
    3 252168192 488397134 112.7G Linux filesyste arch-btrfs-3
Note that I do use GPT.  But that is not the point here. What I am trying to show is where my first partition starts.  This is also where fdisk will start partitions these days.  This is to ensure compatibility with 4k advanced format disks.
If you are not dead set on Grub2, you could try using syslinux.  I really like it much better, though if you are booting more than one Linux, you need to either employ chainloading to various partition boot records, or have a shared /boot.  Having a windows partition doens't really matter, as you are simply chainloading to that funky reserved partition anyway.
The other option is to use grub-legacy, which can still be found in the AUR.  I actually liked the orginal Grub, as it provided a nice feature set, but was still configurable by hand and it actually fit into the MBR.

It overwrote the MBR from the first disk, even though you installed Windows 8 on the second disk? That's odd... Make sure that the boot order in the BIOS is right (that the drive with Arch Linux is the first to boot) and from a 2012 Arch Linux install media run:
    # mount /dev/sdxY /mnt #Your root partition.
    # mount /dev/sdxZ /mnt/boot #Your boot partition (if you have one).
    # arch-chroot /mnt
And continue with the instructions from here. If you don't have a 2012 Arch Linux install media (or you only have some other "live" Linux distribution), use the old chroot way.
