[SOLVED] Trouble initialising display - G55VW (GTX 660M)

Couple months back I made the switch from Ubuntu to Arch, which has worked out great on my old laptop, and I've gotten quite familiar with the system.
I've got a new laptop now though, and I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong with my display/GPU on Arch.
Here's the situation.
I've tried both vesa, nouveau, and nvidia binaries.
Here are a few outputs using the nvidia driver, first nvidia-xconfig --query-gpu-info (which returns two alternating outputs)
Number of GPUs: 1
GPU #0:
Name : GeForce GTX 660M

Starting a basic xsession works 50% of the time, which I assume stems from the same issue nvidia-xconfig shows, here is the Xorg.0.log output of a failed intialisation

I have googled my butt off trying to find a solution to this, problem, with no success. This seems to be a common problem with Nvidia Optimus which is something this laptop simply doesn't have (I bought it very much for that particular reason).
I have tried booting up with nomodeset and later on a custom EDID.bin extracted from Windows registry, thinking the kernel might be reading it wrong, but no.
Here is my dmesg output for the sake of thoroughness.

Apologies if I wasn't clear on that part. I've tried generating a xorg.conf, even adding sections (like those pertaining to display ID etc) via nvidia-xsettings; making sure it adds sections when the display is being "properly" detected.

  • GTX 660M black screen after installing driver, maybe a BIOS problem

    Hello,
I own a custom PowerPro 11-36 laptop based on a MS-16F23 platform. A few months ago my graphics card died. (A GTX 560M)
I could not afford to buy a new laptop or new graphics card so I replaced it with a second hand GTX 670M 3 GB. It worked fine at first, but after a month this card also died.
About a week ago I received an used GTX 660M from an acquaintance.
I installed it with the new heatsink, started Windows and everything looked OK. Then I installed the Nvidia drivers and after reboot, right after the loading screen, I got a black screen (with the screen still lit).
I went into Safe mode and uninstalled the driver. Then installed again and got the same result. Went into Bios, change settings, tried resetting CMOS, nothing worked. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate again, then Windows 8, same thing. I also tried modding the drivers, still nothing.
I finally connected the laptop to an external monitor and it worked with the Nvidia driver installed. The laptop screen work perfectly without the driver.
Somebody form the Nvidia forum told me that this might be a BIOS problem, so I came here for help. Updating the BIOS is the only thing I haven't tried.
I looked for a fix for this for days now, if anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.
    Thank you,
    Fox

OK, thanks to runningman and to the great people at Power Notebooks I got to the point I am now. I have a MS-16F2-ID1 platform, with this BIOS:
    BIOS Version: E16F2IMT.300
    BIOS Build: 05/31/2011
    EC Version 16F2EG61 Ver4.22
    EC Build 04/21/2011
and a Dell (Alienware) GTX 660M video card with original VBIOS that are currently not fully compatible with each other.
By looking around I have found:
    - the VBIOS for the Dell GTX 660M at  http://www.techpowerup.com/
    - a more recent BIOS for my PowerPro R 11:36-560 MSI 937-16F231-004 on the MSI website.
    - that the MSI GE60 0ND laptop used to come with the GTX 660M GPU and I have also found a BIOS for this on the MSI website.
I have tried modding the Nvidia driver again, following the indications in the link provided by runningman, but unfortunately it did not solved the problem.
I understand that for this to work, I have to either find, create, or find somebody that can make a modified vbios for the Dell GTX 660M GPU that will make it compatible with my laptop. Or, I could change the BIOS of my laptop in such a way that it would ID the 660M Dell MXM.
This is were I am right now and I have no idea were to go next. As before, any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanx,
    Fox

  • GE60 GTX 660M overclock

    Hi
    I've got a GE60 0ND with an i7-3630QM @2.4GHz and GTX 660M
Is it okay to overclock the gpu ? How much is appropriate to keep it at safe temps and get a good fps boost?
And would the msi Afterburner suffice for overclocking?
    Thanks in advance

I think Afterburner is capable to overclock the GPU, but not a big number gap.

  • After Effects CS6 Graphics Card Nvidia GTX 660M

When will After Effects CS6 work with Nvidia GTX 660M? Will ever work with Nvidia GT 630M? Thank you.

Nobody can tell, but you shouldn't keep your hopes up. These are trimmed down "mobile" cards/ chips and they may never support Raytrace 3D. for the rest refer to the system specs as stated on the product page. what's not listed there, is not supported.

  • [Solved] Grub not displaying menu, error messages from grub-mkconfig

    Hi I'm new
I have (or rather, am trying to setup) a dual boot with Windows 8.1 and Arch, with each OS on separate SSDs.
Windows 8.1 already installed, Arch installation (seems to have) has gone smoothly. However, when I remove the installation usb, and try to boot, I get a command line prompt:
    grub >_
...instead of a menu. I tried typing 'boot', but got 'you need to load the kernel first'. So I cannot access my arch installation without chrooting (or knowing how to compile the kernel in the command line, which I could not find after a lot of searching)
I followed the documentation in the Beginner's Guide and the GRUB page for installing and configuring GRUB. This is UEFI (grub2), not BIOS (grub legacy).
    pacman -S grub efibootmgr
    grub-install --target=x86S64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
No error messages. I also installed os-prober for kicks. When I went to generate the config file (as recommended for beginners), I got a torrent of what I interpreted to be error messages, not just copacetic output:
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    resulted in:
click this link for error messages
(sorry about the image. I had to shutdown and reboot into my windows partition, since I still can't arch it up. If any/all of you have a better way to reproduce output and feel it pertinent, I'm all ears)
so upon exiting chroot and rebooting, grub boots up to the above effect; no menu is displayed. And I am sad panda.
    Background Information:
    Partition scheme:
/dev/sda1 - BIOS boot partition (I didn't read carefully, lol)
/dev/sda2 - EFI System Partition - mounted to /mnt/boot when chrooting in
/dev/sda3 - Root partition - mounted to /mnt/ when chrooting in
/dev/sda4 - Home partition - mounted to /mnt/home when chrooting in
The installation and configuration described above was done in chroot with the above partition scheme
I originally had issues booting into UEFI mode with the arch iso (written to a usb stick for the initial install). The boot would hang at 'triggering uevents'. I ultimately fixed this by pressing 'e' in the bootloader menu (also grub, I believe) and prepended
    linux /boot/vmlinux-linux root=UUID=978e3e81-8048-4ae1-8a06-aa727458e8ff nomodeset nouveau.modeset=0
It then (successfully triggered uevents? and) booted normally

I realized that since I was not using EFISTUB, I could not mount the ESP to /boot; it had to be /boot/efi. A quick remount-reinstall of grub, then rerunning grub-mkconfig solved the issue.
Also, regarding WonderWoofy's suggestion: I learned by trying gummiboot that for whatever reason the kernel hadn't compiled properly when I ran
    pacstrap /mnt base base-devel
    Fixed via
    pacman -S linux
    Thanks for your help, everybody!

  • [SOLVED] Incorrect time displayed in my system

    Hey Archers,
I have trouble correct time being displayed in my system.
    My BIOS time is:
    May 18 2012 08:39:21 PM IST
    Date command displays
    Sat May 19 02:09:59 IST 2012
Clearly the time displayed by date command is localtime+05:30 (Asia/Kolkata), when I expect it to be just localtime.
    How do I correct this?
I dont dual boot and have just Arch installed on my machine.
    And my /etc/rc.conf has this:
    HARDWARECLOCK="UTC"
    TIMEZONE="Asia/Kolkata"
Please correct if my understanding is wrong, but is this how it works?
    When I say HARDWARECLOCK=UTC and TIMEZONE=''Asia/Kolkata",
It assumes, hardwareclock, time displayed by BIOS, is infact UTC, and, since the user is interested in timezone, +0530, it adds 0530 to hardware clock.
    Thanks,
    Nachiket.

    Hey Tectu,
The wiki article on Time was indeed splendid. It had all the information I needed. Thank you.
    Trilby,
You were right, my hardware clock was on local time.
So this is what I did to set it correct.
    1. Set the HARDWARECLOCK to "localtime" in /etc/rc.conf
    HARDWARECLOCK="localtime"
    TIMEZONE="Asia/Kolkata"
    2. Reboot the system
    3. Set the systemclock to UTC by doing a -0530 (minus 05 hours 30 minutes)
    # date `date -d "-05 hours -30 mins" +%m%d%H%M%Y`
    4. Copy the system clock value to hardware clock
    # hwclock --systohc
    5. Edit the /etc/rc.conf to set HARDWARECLOCK back to UTC
    HARDWARECLOCK="UTC"
    TIMEZONE="Asia/Kolkata"
    6. Reboot the system.
And yes, now my system clock displays correct time
Just setting HARDWARECLOCK to "localtime" also worked. But since I the beginners guide recomments "UTC" I did all this.
    Marking the thread as SOLVED.
    Regards,
    Nachiket.

  • [Solved] URXVT cannot display Japanese Characters

    Solved:
I had a typo in my locale.conf, setting to an invalid locale - apparently that did it.
    Thanks for the help!
    Hi everybody!
I just now re-installed Arch because I switched hard-drives (to an SSD) and everything seems to be working again, apart from one thing:
urxvt doesn't display Japanese Characters, just questionmarks instead when using ls and garbage characters otherwise.
I literally copied and pasted my ~/.Xresources from my old install, so I'm not quite sure what went wrong.
    This is said file:
    Urxvt.urgentOnBell: True
    urxvt*cursorBlink: false
    !urxvt*internalBorder: 0
    !urxvt*externalBorder: 0
    URxvt*.depth: 32
    URxvt*.background: [85]#000000
    ! URxvt.scrollstyle: plain
    URxvt.scrollBar: false
    URxvt.foreground: grey
    ! red
    URxvt.color1: #CC0000
    URxvt.color9: #B33838
    ! blue
    URxvt.color4: #3465A4
    URxvt.color12: #729FCF
    ! yellow
    Urxvt.color3: #b48363
    URxvt.color11: #d49b4e
    !URxvt.font: 8x13
    urxvt*font: xft:DejaVu Sans Mono:size=8:antialas=true,xft:Kochi Gothic:size=8
This is what fc-list has to say:
    % fc-list | grep "Kochi\|DejaVuSansMono"
    /usr/share/fonts/TTF/DejaVuSansMono.ttf: DejaVu Sans Mono:style=Book
    /usr/share/fonts/TTF/kochi-mincho-subst.ttf: Kochi Mincho,æ±é¢¨ææ:style=Regular,æ¨æº
    /usr/share/fonts/TTF/kochi-gothic-subst.ttf: Kochi Gothic,æ±é¢¨ã´ã·ãã¯:style=Regular,æ¨æº
    /usr/share/fonts/TTF/DejaVuSansMono-Oblique.ttf: DejaVu Sans Mono:style=Oblique
    /usr/share/fonts/TTF/DejaVuSansMono-Bold.ttf: DejaVu Sans Mono:style=Bold
    /usr/share/fonts/TTF/DejaVuSansMono-BoldOblique.ttf: DejaVu Sans Mono:style=Bold Oblique
I already tried re-installing the fonts and I also tried out alternative fonts, but nothing seems to work.
All the other settings from the ~/.Xresources file are applied perfectly, so I'm not quite sure where to look for the error.
My browser (dwb) displays japanese characters just fine.
    Any help is greatly appreciated
Edit: I just realized that urxvt seems to completely ignore the fonts line - I had that problem once before, when I used the AMD Catalyst driver and not the open source one.
I now have an Nvidia card and started using the propietary driver - maybe that has something to do with it?

    Works here:
    URxvt*depth: 32
    URxvt*buffered: true
    URxvt*termName: rxvt-256color
    URxvt.font: xft:Terminus:pixelsize=12:antialias=false
    urxvt.imLocale: pl_PL.ISO8859-2
    What's the output of 'localectl'?

  • [SOLVED] Trouble selecting Line-in instead of Mic

I'm trying to use QSSTV to display SSTV signals from my ham radio. The only problem I'm having is that it's listening to my laptop's built-in mic instead of the line-in jack. The input soundcard option in QSSTV is set to default, so I presume I'll have to play around with ALSA to make line-in its default input source.
Please help me here, I'm a bit stuck.

Welcome to Arch Linux.  One of the things we ask is that when you regard something as solved, edit the title of your thread and prepend [SOLVED] to the thread title.  You do this by editing the first post in the thread.  We ask that you do this because you are the only one who really can determine that the problem is solved, and (aside from the moderators) you are the only one who can do that.  And -- I hear the moderators are all lazy

  • Three displays with GTX 670 -- duplicating desktop problem

Just got a new computer with an Asus GTX 670 card.   I am running 3 displays:  1. (Main) Dell U2412M via DVI port,   2.  Old Samsung LCD monitor via DVI port with VGA adapter,  3. Samsung 59" plasma TV via HDMI port.  I am trying to duplicate the desktop on my TV, but the card will only allow me to extend the desktop to the TV.  TV goes blank when I try to duplicate the desktop.  I am able to duplicate the desktop on the TV when my third monitor is not connected.  My old Samsung monitor displays an extended desktop which is what I want.
If anyone has figured out the workings of this new card, I'd like to know if it is possible to duplicate the desktop on my TV with my setup.   Thanks

Yes, as I mentioned in my post, the GTX will extend the desktop to all 3 displays, that is, I can move a window from the main monitor to either of the other two displays.  I am trying to duplicate the desktop on my main monitor to the TV so they show exactly the same thing, as one would do in a presentation with a projector.   This is possible if I don't use a third monitor.

  • [SOLVED] KDE konsole display looks broken after upgrading.

    Hi,
I just upgraded konsole (:: Replace kdebase-konsole with extra/konsole? [Y/n] ) so it's konsole 2.14.2 -> 3.0.1, and there is many display problems. For example, fonts are not monospaced, the cursor is not aligned with the text, when I execute "ls", files name are incomplete and some filename are over other filename, etc.
    I already have ttf-dejavu and ttf-liberation installed.
Do you have any idea on how this append and how to fix this ?

  • [SOLVED] FUBAR gvim display

I reccently installed gvim to use as my text editor, but I'm having a bit of trouble seeing text, whitespace, or anything otherwise meaningful on it.  I've tried changing the font, setting the encoding to utf8, which helped some people who were having problems with similar rectangles showing up for foreign characters, uninstalling/reinstalling gvim, and pacman -Syu, all to no avail.  I explored my logs folder as was suggested in the sticky, but I'm not really sure where I'd find anything that would be helpful.
    Vim works just fine.

  • [SOLVED] Trouble with Install that I've never seen before (Gnucash)

Hello all! I am rather new to Arch. I came over from Windows (disgruntled up to Win 7). When I first came over to Linux I did so via Ubuntu (12.04 and 13.10) and Mint (16). Seeing that Ubuntu would love to eventually sell us all out I decided to give Arch a try and LOVED IT! The install went smoothly and almost every program that I have needed has installed flawlessly..That is with the exception of Gnucash. I do a lot of freelance bookkeeping work and Gnucash is most definitely the best program I have found out there (even when I was using Windows). I have tried to install from BOTH the official repository and the AUR with no luck. I am using a 64 bit install of Arch on a Dell Inspiron 1440. All of my packages and repositories have been updated through pacman -Syu and -Syy. Below is the results message that I receive when trying to install from EITHER repository (AUR version is what I have posted). It shows that there appear to be two corrupt packages. If any of you can guide me in the right direction as to how to possibly rectify my trouble I would be most appreciative. (Also: if I am posting this in the wrong area please let me know where the better place would be.)

  • [SOLVED] Trouble setting up KVM VGA passthrough using vfio

    Hi all!
In the past two weeks I've set up my first LFS build using Arch and everything is working great! Well, almost everything.
I'm trying to get a VM set up with vfio for Windows gaming but I'm having trouble and I don't know where to look to fix this... Following this guide: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162768
I have compiled and am running AUR\linux-vfio, with amd_iommu=on and my processor supports virtualization. pci-stubs holding on to the card to be virtualized.
Cobbled together specs - The 7850 is my host and the 7870 is to be passed to the VM.

Blah, looks like I have to build a new system (or at least get a new mobo) to get this figured out. I've put in a ticket with gigabyte for my mobo to see if they'll do anything for me, but I doubt it...
I'm hesitant to mark this as solved... would anyone have any ideas on how I could get this working otherwise?

  • Trouble with display settings for projector/Reactable

    Hi,
I'm trying to install a musical hardware interface called the Reactable for use with my iMac, and I'm having trouble getting the correct display settings. It's designed to work with laptops and it works fine for the most part with my Apple Hackintosh, but I can't seem to get it working correctly with my iMac. The tech support from the Reactable company recommends that I use 1600x1200 resolution or 1024x768 (native) on the projector, but when I open my display settings I am not presented with either of those options. It only permits me to use 1024x768 and 1024x768 (stretched).
The only instance in which I can get the projection to cover the whole table is with 1024x768, but then the projection is too large. Do I need to change the scaling somehow? How do I do that?
    Thanks,
    Justin

1080p.    If you have a Mac Mini with an HDMI connector, connect direct through there.
Otherwise you'll need to look at either: Which Macs don't have audio over mini-Displayport connectivity, need either an
Apogee DVI To HDMI Converter / SPDIF Optical Toslink+Coaxial Input Output if you have a mini-DVI or DVI (The left connector is DVI, and the right connector is mini-DVI) connector and it is Intel.
    Kanex iAdapt Displayport adaptor if you have a mini-Displayport ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/47/Mini_DisplayPort_on_App le_MacBook.jpg/300px-Mini_DisplayPort_on_Apple_MacBook.jpg
    ) connector.
Note, thunderbolt connectors look the same as mini-Displayport except they have the lightning icon symbol.
PowerPC Mac Minis, need a StarTech DVI2HDMIA connector together with an RCA minijack to red and white splitter cable.
