[SOLVED] Trying to get dual monitor Xrandr to run on startup

I found several posts with trying to get an Xrandr script on startup but their solution doesn't seem to work.
Running Arch + XFCE + SLiM with ati open source drivers
when running xrandr --output HDMI-0 --right-of DVI-1 in terminal my dual monitor setup works fine
so I add it to my /home/username/.xinitrc which looks like
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --right-of DVI-1
exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
but there is the same ol' mirrored desktops? Any suggestions?

It could also be me overlooking some stupid simple detail too.  I haven't had any issues with gnome or kde but granted I could use the actual gui
to change it.  Weird thing is when I installed xfce a couple days ago I swear it had a gui to enable what I need because also it WAS working 2 days ago o_O

  • Seeking a clear description of getting dual monitors to work

    I've spent a long while researching the issue of getting dual monitors to work on a new mac mini - which I will be purchasing as soon as I figure this one out! But I am bamboozled by references to the various types of connections and ports. If anyone has the patience to explain this really simply and clearly, I'd be very grateful.
    Interestingly, the Apple guy on the phone today told me it isn't possible - it's either/or for the display connections. But clearly it IS possible, because there is so much discussion about it here...
    Here's where I confess my technical limitations, and say that I am confused about what I need (to purchase, presumably) to get my two existing monitors to work with the new mini.
    They are presently connected to my PC (soon to be ceremonially consigned... etc) with cables which have regular D-sub connectors at each end. This means they are vga, right? There is no digital connector on either monitor.
    So I am trying to figure out
    a) is it possible to use these two monitors in a dual display setup with a mac mini? If so:
    b) How?! And then;
    c) what leads and/or connectors do I need to buy in order to connect them up?

    An '09 Mac mini has two video out pots on the rear; a mini-DVI port and a mini-DisplayPort. The Mac mini comes with a mini-DVI to DVI-D adapter. If you use what came in the box with the mini, you need a DVI-D to VGA cable to connect one of your monitors. Otherwise you need a mini-DVI to VGA adapter and a VGA to VGA cable for one monitor. For the other monitor you need a mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter and a VGA to VGA cable.

  • [SOLVED] openbox margins with dual monitors

    Hi community,
    I have stumbled to a nasty problem on my first incursion to dual monitors in openbox.
    I'm using xrandr with this command (which works just fine BTW):
    xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1280x800 --primary --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024_60.00 --gamma 1.0:1.4:0.85 --right-of LVDS
    and have set a Virtual screen in xorg.conf of 2560 x 1024 pixels.
    But, my laptop monitor only handles 1280x800, while my external LCD monitor has 1280x1024, so there is a virtual area under my laptop screen which i'm not using, but i dont really care about that.
    The problem is that when I'm setting screen margins, so that maximized windows will respect the panels in the bottom (tint2), in rc.xml (or by obconf) the margins are applied to the virtual screen and only are practical on the external monitor wich has more pixel height.
    I'm really missing some kind of per monitor margin settings in openbox, maybe there is and i haven't found it? It makes me wonder because openbox can maximize windows to a single monitor, even if the whole layout it's treated like a virtual screen, so it has some way of distinguishing between them.

    TL;DR - I'm not aware of any acceptable solution at the moment.
    Basically, what you're having problems with, is the "dead area." It can really be quite a pain in the butt if window managers or other screen aware applications don't anticipate it properly. To my knowledge, Openbox doesn't support margins on a monitor-by-monitor basis. In reality, you shouldn't need to be setting margins anyway. Tint2 should be reporting itself as a taskbar, and Openbox should be respecting that.
    I have dead area too, with multiple monitors, and Openbox respects both of the KDE taskbars I have running (one on each monitor). (I use KDE and simply replaced Kwin with Openbox.) This tells me that tint2 should be able to cooperate with Openbox. I remember trying tint2 a while ago, and didn't fine it adequate in a dual monitor environment (it was probably a year ago or so). tint2 would need to be setting the _NET_WM_STRUT_PARTIAL hint, and I'm not sure if it is (or if it's doing it properly).     Also, I do know that the developer for Openbox recently got a dual monitor setup, and she's been adding additional support for dual monitors a little at a time. Hopefully with 3.5, there will be a lot more support. (Margin support for multiple monitors would be great, because it could be a good utility knife for applications that don't care about multi-monitors setups and don't set the proper hints.)
    If you're capable of modifying tint2, my course of action would be to try something that works (like the KDE taskbars) and record the hints being set there. Then compare them with tint2 and try to mirror KDE's setup. (If you're a programming lacking experience with X and related nonsense, I'd be more than willing to offer what guidance I have.)
    Also, I developed a panel myself (and got pretty far along) using the PyGTK toolkit... But I can't remember if I solved this problem or not. I'll try to check it out and get back to you. (I got as far as implementing a widget system that includes a task list, system tray, clock, menus... It just isn't polished very well. My original intention was for it to be a more robust PyPanel with dual monitor support.)

  • [Solved] Can't get external monitor to display correct resolution

    I have a laptop with 1280x800 resolution, I hooked up a spare monitor we had sitting around that has a native resolution of 1280x1024 to my laptop. When I hook it up the external monitor displays a resolution of 1024x768. I use KDE 4.5, so I tried to change the resolution for the external monitor in System Settings but 1024x768 is the highest resolution listed.
    I've tried messing around with xrandr through the command line (somewhat anyway) but I'm at a loss in trying to get the external monitor to display its native resolution. I'd like to get the external monitor to possibly replace my laptop monitor as it would add another 224 vertical pixels. Anyone have any ideas?

    You had said the native resolution is 1280x1024 -- I therefore assume this is an LCD monitor.
    I would not generally expect LCDs to flicker.  At what vertical frequency are you driving the display? Most LCDs operate at 60Hz.  This is regardless of the local power line frequency or television standard.
    Many CRT monitors are driven at 75 Hz to keep them from flickering or from "beating" with ambient lighting that is flickering at the local power line frequency (50 or 60 Hz).  Again, this is not the correct thing to do with LCDs.
    Bottom Line: Make sure your vertical frame rate is 60 Hz.

  • Can't get dual monitors to come back up when docking. T500 with mini dock & XP

    I have a T500 with XP installed. I am using it docked into a mini dock attached to two 20inch Viewsonic monitors. One connected via VGA and the other DVI. I setup the dual monitors just fine. Anytime after I undock and boot up the laptop I can't get the dual monitors to automatically display. I have to go into the display properties and re set it up each time. Can anyone suggest any ideas?

    When your T500 power-on , press F1 to log in BIOS, and change the option in >config>Display>Boot-Display-Device to Both or VGA, I suppose that it will reslove your problem.

    Answered my own question, nmdb was the culprit.... dang, well saving this page for future ref:
    This did it:
    Starting the service
    Start/enable Samba via the smbd and nmbd at boot:
    systemctl enable smbd.service
    systemctl enable nmbd.service
    Run them right now as well (otherwise you'd have to reboot):
    systemctl start smbd.service
    systemctl start nmbd.service
    Swat is a nice web interface too

  • [Self Solved] Problems trying to get the install.exe to run

    After trying for 3 days to get the install.exe to run on my new computer I eventually ran out of options. You could see, however, that in the task manager, once you clicked on the .exe that it would run for a bit, max out at ~8k and then disappear. The two things I could think of were that A. It might have been a registry error that is preventing me from running the .exe and B. that it might be a service that is blocking it. I did not want to go through the stress of re-installing windows just so I could get the install.exe to run over a hunch that my registry might be foul. Instead I performed a clean boot that would prevent a service from stopping the installation. Upon restarting I was able to run the install.exe and I finally have adobe reader running. For anyone who is not familiar with a clean boot it can be done as follows:
    Pressing [Win] + r OR Start > search
    and then typing "msconfig.exe" + enter will open up the system configuration screen.
    then click on the "Services" tab, followed by clicking the box "Hide all Microsoft services" so that it has a checkmark inside it, followed by clicking the button "Disable All"
    Your computer will then be prompted to restart
    Upon launching your windows interface go to your downloads folder and then try to run the install.exe, if it works, as did mine, it would appear that a certain service was blocking it.
    Hope this helps the .02% of people who actually have this problem when installing

    hi,
    prior to the recent xorg upgrade, i had my xorg.conf set my keyboard layout, and hal would automount my phone in pcmanfm. since the xorg update, for the sake of not having to to set up the new hotplugging, I disabled it in my xorg.conf so my keyboard would keep its layout.
    obviously though, with hot plugging switched off, hal wont mount my phone, so i am trying to get my keyboard set up and get hal automounting.
    i have set    Option       "AutoAddDevices" "True" in my xorg.conf

    for some reason, logiaccess and kbd work in xorg.conf, but no in hal? instead, evdev can do everything!

    I use xfce and I have a nvidia card with property driver.
    When I switched in dual monitor the panel go to the second monitor. In xfce 4.6 panel stay in principal monitor.
    There is a configuration for position panel in dual monitor?

    You can set "span monitors" in the panel preferences, and you can lock the panel also I can drag it to another monitor when in it's preferences (it has a red dotted line around it then) works pretty much perfect

  • Help trying to get the F_ApiWinConnectSession initialized and running in the background.

    I have the FDK8 and have been using framemaker as a processor of templates. We have successfully written a program that uses the framemaker in a user account currently logged in. In other words, USER A logs in with their account on Computer A and processes files just fine.  Now, we would like to set up a system where jobs are submitted by USER A and runs on a remote Computer B which processes the document and saves it as a PDF.
    We want to make it so users can submit a job through a web service using the .NET framework. We have tried to do this, however we are failing on one crucial part of our development. I am trying to use the single most important (asynchronis) connectivity line:
    F_ApiWinConnectSession( NULL, NULL, &ClassID );
    This is because we want to have framemaker start in the background with this execution of this service.  Unfortunately, without the GUI available this command fails.  We have obviously created a Progid and it has been registered in the registry. We did this by runnning :
    FrameMaker.exe /progid:FrameMaker.Automation.2 /auto
    Can anyone help me with trying to get framemaker to run in a background.  Is there a way to process the documents without have the GUI up and loaded and then have it process the document.

    Adam,
    The server license is more tuned to the type of output that you are creating, regardless of the number of users. If you are creating content from external sources and generating a PDF in an automated way via FM, then you need a server license (period).
    Read your FM EULA carefully.
    2.2.  Limitations on Server and Network Use.  You may install one copy of  the Software on your Computer file server for the sole purpose of downloading  and installing the Software onto other Computers within your internal network up  to the Permitted Number, provided that the total number of users that are  permitted to download and install the Software from such Computer file server,  does not exceed the Permitted Number.  Except as explicitly described above, no  other network or server use is permitted under this license, including but not  limited to, using the Software either directly or through commands, data or  instructions from or to any other Computer, for internet or web hosting services  or by any user not licensed to Use this copy of the Software through a valid  license from Adobe.  For the avoidance of doubt, this Agreement does not permit  the Software to be Used in any batch-oriented environment where such Use of the  software is to produce Postscript or PDF output from data originating from any  other application, unless such Use is merely incidental to a Use clearly  permitted by the license.To obtain rights for additional server, batch oriented  or network licensing uses, you may purchase a license(s) for the FrameMaker®  Server product.     This has greatly impacted the database publishing side of things. If all of  your content is completely created in FrameMaker, then you should be ok.  However, if you create or get any content outside of FrameMaker and pass it  through FM to make your documentation sets, then according to Adobe, you need to  be using the FrameServer product (for creating the PDFs).

  • Error trying to get LiveCycle ES up and running with JBoss/SQL Server

    APJ<br />We ran into many issues setting up a very similar environment.  In the end we had to use a specially configured JBoss, supplied by Adobe, to make a connection with the SQL database.  Since you have SQL w/ SP2 on it, you will need the 1.2 driver for sure, but you may want to talk to Adobe support about obtaining the version of JBoss they supplied us with.  The Adobe Support Reference Number is: 1-52422366.<br /><br />Even with the alternate JBoss we had to perform the following steps to get the configuration right:<br /><br />1.     Install Livecycle from the installation DVD.  Follow the instructions for installing LiveCycle supplied by Adobe, including all pre-installation instructions.  Make sure NT service is installed with parameters, and dont run Configuration Manager.<br />2.     Rename %LIVECYCLE_INSTALL%\jboss to %LIVECYCLE_INSTALL%\jboss_orig<br />3.     Extract the zipped new, good instance of JBoss (supplied by Adobe)  to the %LIVECYCLE_INSTALL%\ folder  <br />4.     Go to the %LiveCycle_Home%\deploy folder and make a copy of the file adobeimport_SQLServer.jar file.  Rename the copy of the file to aadobeimport_SQLServer.jar.  There seems to be a bug in configuration manager that looks for a file with the extra  a appended to the beginning of the file name, where that file normally isnt there.  Make sure that the adobeimport_SQLServer.jar file is still in this folder as well.<br />5.     Edit the data source file (%JBOSS_HOME%\server\all\deploy\ adobe-ds.xml) to point to the correct database for the LiveCycle Server.<br />a.     Update the <connection-url>, <user-name>, and <password> tags with the correct database connection information.<br />b.     If BAM is to be used on the server (this should be done on the Production server) then delete both lines that state Remove this line, if BAM is used.<br />6.     Go to the login configuration file (%JBOSS_HOME%\server\all\conf\login-config.xml), and edit the section labeled <application-policy name = "MSSQLDbRealm">.<br />a.     Change the Principal, UserName, and Password options to point to the correct database.  These will be the same as what was changed in the adobe-ds.xml file from the step above.<br /><br />7.     Edit the system variables on the server.  Add to the Path variable %JBOSS_HOME%\bin, and add the variable JBOSS_HOME with the path to the JBoss folder on the server. (D:\Adobe\LiveCycle8\jboss  for example)<br />8.     From windows services start the JBoss for Adobe LiveCycle ES v8.0 service.  Review the JBoss server log (%JBOSS_HOME%\server\all\log\server.log) to verify that JBoss starts without throwing any exception errors (A document timeout exception is the only acceptable exception for starting the service).  <br />9.     Run the LiveCycle Configuration Manager (%LiveCycle_Home%\ConfigurationManager\bin\ConfigurationManager.bat).  <br />a.     Select to Not Upgrade fromLiveCycle 7.x.<br />b.     Check all boxes on the Solution Component Selection screen.<br />c.     For the Task Selection screen check all the boxes except for the Import LiveCycle ES Samples into LiveCycle ES if on the production server. <br />d.     Run through the rest of the configuration manager interface to setup the LiveCycle server with the new application server.  Follow the steps supplied by Adobe for this.<br />10.     Once configuration manager has completed, reboot the server, and verify that JBoss starts up again without any exceptions or errors (again a document timeout exception is an acceptable exception.  Look at the server log to verify this (%JBOSS_HOME%\server\all\log\server.log)).

    Just got a second monitor and I am trying to set it up to work with arch.
    I have 2 nvidia cards with 1 monitor plugged into each.
