[SOLVED] UI temporary freezes

Hi,
I use gnome 3, and since a couple of days, I suffer from temporary freezes. It seems that it is only a screen update problem, as keyboard and mouse keep responding. I have googled a bit and search through the forums, but I can't find anything recent like this. Logs don't reveal much either. I use the intel driver, this is a core i5 laptop (arrandale).
Any one experiencing the same, or with any clue about what could be causing this / how can I solve it?
Thanks

I'll answer myself in case it is useful for someone else. The freezes I experienced were due to some power saving options passed to the kernel taken from a phoronix article:
i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1
Removing them resolved the issue.

  • Temporary freezes after fitting SSD and new ram

I recently replaced the internal HD in my MacBook Pro with a 250GB SSD from OWC and doubled the ram to 4GB at the same time. I'm very pleased with the improvement in performance, except that I now get temporary freezes for as long as 20-30 secs. I can move the cursor around and click but nothing happens. When The computer 'comes back' it responds to what I did while it was 'away'. This happens several times a day.
Any ideas what might be going on here?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve  = : ^ )

I have a SSD installed and I don't get any of that. I also don't use Safari, I use Chrome.
The SSD I installed is a Kingston SSDNow V200 128GB. It has been running fine for 2 months.
One big reason I use Chrome is because it allows me to sync all browser data across many different computers.
If I change, add or delete a bookmark it gets updated on all my computers. If I save or delete a login username & password for anything it get updated on all computers.
    But I digress.
As to your problem I'd call OWC and tell them your problem. And you could try putting the original drive back in and see if you get any freezes. If you do them it may be the RAM. If you don't then it is the SSD.

  • HD recycling leading to temporary freezes and directory damage

    Hi all
I have an iMac 7, bought beginning of 2008.
I have had no problems with the computer until now, either windows or osx.
Over the past month I have been experiencing temporary freezes. This behavior in windows makes the computer freeze for about 2-4 minutes and then recovers. All the actions I make with the mouse during the freeze stack and resolve after the freeze. In OSX the freezes do not get in the minute range, just like 30 seconds long or so.
The problem usually extends to data corruption and failure to boot anymore. I have reinstalled OSX and windows many times now and the problems repeat. To the extent that that even during OS installation I get corruption. Verifying the disk just after installation report unfixable directory damage.
I am pretty convinced I have a hardware problem but I am trying to pinpoint it.
    Things I have looked into:
    Clear NVRAM & PRAM
    Performed RAM test
    Performed drive surface scans
    Check S.M.A.R.T monitoring.
    Graphics Tests
All things have shown negative results. Anyhow, my intuition (which may be off) leads me to a Hard Disk mechanical/heat problem. When the freezes occur, I clearly hear something, recycling, spinning off and then on. It could be any fan but I think it is the hard disk. What I don't know is if the recycle is consequence or cause of the failure.
The problem is getting worse in time. More frequent freezes and more frequent and evident data corruptions.
The reason I want to pinpoint the problem is to ease the support process. Apple warranty does not cover my iMac but by my country laws it must if the failure is not caused by miss-use. Somehow I expect to be a heavy administrative paperwork process because I am going to have to show somehow I have not done any miss-use before hand.
Other thing I am considering if its a hard drive problem, is opening the imac and replacing the HD myself, might be cheaper than the paperwork. Any suggestions on this??
    Thanks for reading.

    HI,
*"Over the past month I have been experiencing temporary freezes."*
How much free drive space is there? Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.
Have you booted from your install disk, run Disk Utility?
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
And you could try the Apple Hardware Test

  • Intermittent temporary freeze on Hetis 865GV-E

I am experiencing random and temporary freezes (1 to 20 seconds) on my two Hetis 865GV-E computers.  The specs on both are as follows: Intel P4 Prescott 3.0E, 1GB (2 x 512MB) Crucial RAM, Windows XP Pro SP2, 80GB Western Digital SATA HDD, Sony DVD +/-RW.  Both have a 128MB PCI video card but different models: Jaton GeForce MX4000 and a Chaintech GeForce FX5200.
I have tried the following: verifiy with Crucial that the memory is matched to the Processor/motherboard, re-installed Windows on a new hard drive, disabled the virus software, called MSI support (they sent two new boards - same problem), ran Ad-Aware and virus checks, ran memory and hard drive diagnostic tests.
This has been going on since March '05 and I have run out of ideas on what to try next.  Sometimes when typing in a field the characters stop appearing even though I continue to type but when the "freeze" is over all of the characters appear all at once.  This would seem to rule out a hard drive problem.  I usually am in Outlook when I get the freeze but it happens in other programs as well.
I would appreciate it if anyone has any other ideas that I can try.  Thanks in advance!

I have installed the SpeedFan utility and it does look like I am having a heat issue (good call Dr Stu!).  The fan (not sure if it is the system or cpu fan or both) is running consistently at a high RPM since installing SpeedFan.  This is probably because the utility is determining that the temp is too high and it is turning up the RPMs on the fan.  The freeze-ups are no longer happening but the fans should not be running at high RPM 100% of the time.  This makes the computer pretty noisey.  SpeedFan is showing Fan1 at 5067 RPM and Fan2 at 5285 RPM.
    One snapshot shows these temps: Ambient - 35C, Remote 1 - 33C, Remote 2 - 42C and HD0 - 36C
I'm don't know to what Remote 1 and Remote 2 are referring - CPU and Northbridge?
Any ideas on how to get the temperatures down?

  • X200s - problems switching from mains power to battery - temporary freeze

    Hi All,
Noticing a problem with a brand new x200s downgraded to Windows XP from Windows 7 (although never operated with Windows 7) where there is a temporary freeze when either connecting to mains power, or disconnecting from mains power. While it is not a proper freeze, as I can ALT+TAB between applications, I cannot actually do anything (close AP's, write emails etc). This lasts for up to 3 or 4 minutes, and then everything recovers - recovery happens to the extent that anything done during the freeze suddenly happens, like pressing the ThinkVantage Button, or right-clicking on a taskbar item etc.
I wonder if this is something to do with the Lenovo power management system - anyone got any ideas please?
    Many thanks

    Hi,
make sure, that you are using the latest version of Power Manger , power mangement driver . These two parts are basically responsible (when they are installed) for the power configuration.
Please let me know, what is the version of Power manager and power management dirver, that you are using.
Also based on you description, when all is working, when pressing ATL+TAB, then try to open Task manager with CTRL+Shift+ESC and check, what is taking the CPU and memory comsumption.
Once this will not show you anything, go to Windows Event log, maybe there you can find some hint.
Just to make sure, that I understand this corectly: You see this kind of behaviour, when you unplug or plug in the sytsem into AC ?
    Cheers

Here's a couple things to try:
Clear Safari History - Pull down History from the menu bar, select Clear History.
Clear Safari Cache: Safari -> Empty Cache
(You can also Reset Safari: Safari -> Reset Safari (this will remove everything and reset)
One other thing that can cause some strange behavior are custom icons, although I haven't heard it causing this particular problem... Could be worth a try, can't hurt.
Quit Safari, Open finder, go to your home directory > Library -> Safari ->Icons ... Drag the Icons folder to the trash. Re start Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated. You will loose all the custom Icons for sites visited, but they will be replaced the next time you hit those sites.

  • Occasional temporary freezes on disk access (SSD)

I'm using a SanDisk SD5SG225 SSD, and occasionally get random lockups with the disk light stuck on.  These pauses last for about 2-4 seconds, and usually occur when I save a file, open a new tab, etc.  The program that is using the disk will freeze.  I'm using LUKS (no LVM) and had discard with LUKS passthrough enabled, but currently have it disabled.
    Here is my fstab:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    # /dev/mapper/root UUID=8448cc36-99f5-4c90-b310-5688a447089f

    /dev/disk/by-partlabel/boot /boot ext2 rw,relatime 0 2
    /dev/disk/by-partlabel/efi /boot/efi vfat rw,relatime 0 2
I'm not sure what other information to include.  Any help would be appreciated:  I'm scared I'm ruining the SSD somehow.

    Same problem here. Intel SSD.

  • Yet another temporary freezing problem, energy saving related, maybe

I've followed uncountable suggestions about this issue, but none seem to be quite the same situation, and none of the suggestions I tried made any difference so far.
History: MBP 17" June/2009, 8GB RAM, 500GB Seagate with sudden movement protection, started life as 10.5.7, done at least three fresh reinstalls of SL. The problem was present on the second SL install (the one I really used in production for about a year), but I solved it somehow by following uncountable Google suggestions at the time. Didn't take not of the magic one, because the problem wasn't so predictable at the time, or I didn't know enough about it, and also because I only noticed the problem was gone after a couple of weeks of normal use. Unfortunately, some time ago my filesystem went nuts on a kernel panic and, though I was able to move things back in place from lost+found, a few things wouldn't work as they should, so I went for another fresh reinstall. After I started to use the new system the problem showed up again, but I haven't being able to find a fix for it again. Current system (10.6.4) and patches regularly updated, though I tend to delay a reboot to avoid putting together all my usual windows/applications in the correct desktop/spaces. Maybe the only continuously running extension I have is Growl, since I tend to more heavily use the Unix part of the Mac through MacPorts (latex, tcpdump, nmap, bash scripts, emacs and so on). Recently I installed M$ Office, but normally I prefer OpenOffice (does M$ Office install some sort of extension?)
Frequency: I'm almost sure it is triggered by something related to energy saving regarding turning off the screen, but it doesn't happen every time. When I'm giving a class, the machine runs on battery, the settings for screen off are shorter and if I take too long to generate some input (key press or touchpad action), the problem tends to happen. Interestingly, it's particularly more frequent when I'm giving classes:-):-), but it is happening even on my desk with power on. I'm inclined to think there's a "window of opportunity" for the bug to happen, maybe between screen dim and screen off (a few minutes?). My settings are currently at 15 minutes for the screen to go off, for both power adaptor and battery operation, but that's an attempt to lower the chances of this happening during class, which is terrible. They used to be at only a few minutes of inactivity.
Symptoms: if I try to do anything with the machine past some period of inactivity, maybe during that window I mentioned above, there's a high chance of the bug being triggered. The system responds quickly to clicking a window, but applications don't seem to receive the focus of attention; I notice that the window frame of an application doesn't get darker when I try to select it. On a Terminal, the prompt remains as a rectangular frame instead of a filled block (I use white characters on dark background), and no matter how much I try, I cannot give the focus of attention to the visible shell on Terminal, so I can't issue any shell command to try and find out things. Changing workspaces may happen, but at a very slow speed, maybe many seconds after issueing the command. Eventually the system recovers itself, usually after several minutes, and then all user interface events that I tried during the freeze were remembered and are played sequently as fast as the machine can handle, sometimes doing unwanted things in the process due to objects receiving the wrong action (some sort of desynchronization). The outstanding event that preceeds recovering is the screen being progressively blackened and then lit again, but not instantly as in moving the pointer to a hot corner. The screen transition happens during half to a full second, after which all queued events are played at the fastest possible speed. After that the system is completely normal. In the beginning I have hard-rebooted the machine, because I didn't know it would eventually recover itself. During class I also don't have the patience to wait for long (and neither do students:-)).
    Solutions already tried:
    - disabling sms through pmset. I know it has to be disabled with this particular drive, otherwise conflicts with the drive's own mechanism. It is currently off, and had been on for a while till I refound the suggestion through google.
    - re-indexing Spotlight's DB. No change.
    - fixing file permissions (I don't see any possible relation, but anyway...)
Don't recall what else is missing on this list, because I couldn't find a concrete suggestion for this scenario, so I believe that's about it.
It looks to be more frequent now, to the point that I decided to stop work just to write this long msg, in the hope that someone else may have seen such behaviour and have something new for me to try.
    Thanks in advance.

The problem is that the initial backup is incredibly slow and hasn't worked yet. I right click on the dock icon and start the backup process which after working out what needs to be copied progress's in very slow erratic bursts.
It's hard to offer a definite solution. But there are some simple things you could try to improve the backup speed such as excluding TM backup disk from spotlight indexing (privacy tab in spotlight prefs), and excluding unecessary files and folder from the backup (e.g. applications) in TM prefs.

  • [SOLVED] flashplugin video freezing while audio is fine

I saw a post about this on this forum, but I've been searching the forum for about 5 hours now and I can't find it, so I'll post a new topic.
When I do almost anything with adobe flash (in firefox or chromium) after about five seconds the visual freezes while the audio goes on.  I hesitate to call it "video" because this happens with games and such, not just youtube-type videos.  If I right click on the flash animation/video/whatever you want to call it, it starts working again, but only for a few seconds before the same thing happens again.
Also, if I make videos fullscreen, it's just a black screen the first time.  I exit fullscreen and do it again and then it works.  Sometimes the video for that freezes, too, but less often.
I've tried uncommenting EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1 in /etc/adobe/mms.cfg and that doesn't help.  In fact, if I try a fullscreen video with that uncommented, the X server crashes when I try to exit fullscreen.
I've got an intel video card and I've tried playing with xorg.conf enabling EXA with greedy MigrationHeuristic, UXA, XAA, I've tried turning off tiling.  Nothing works.  And I'm not using compiz or anything like that.  I've tried everything I know.  Anybody have any other suggestions???  (Please...?)

Keep an eye on the battery meter, w/o acpi your computer might be using more power.

  • After installing Mavericks, random, temporary freezes occur

Since installing Mavericks on my 2010 Mac Pro I experience random, temporary application freezes of all applications. I can still move the mouse cursor, but I cannot click on anything or type anything until the computer starts to respond again.  The freeze may last about 30 seconds or less, and then the computer behaves normally for a while.  But after a minute or two, the same thing happens again, over and over.
Thinking that it might be my Logitech MX Revolution Mouse and DeNivo keyboard software, I tried to download the latest Logitech software, but I only get an Error 404, so I gave up.  I'm not real confident that will help even when I can download, so I gave up on Mavericks for now and restored 10.8.5, and now all is well again.

Mid 2011 Mac Mini Sever here, and having the same issue with slightly different symptom. Diffrenece is during the random short freez, I can NOT move the curser. Also, keyboard is unresponsive..ex. the capslock LED will not illuminate when pressed. I do have a Logitech MX Revolution Mouse as well.  Right now it is my only mouse, so as soon I can get to the store, I am going to try it out with a apple trackpad

  • [SOLVED] Mouse/laptop freeze on the "2nd" resume from sleep/standy.

I've install Arch on my Alienware M14x R2 and everything works fine except this single issue. If I need to close the laptop lid and let it enter sleep, it does so fine and resumes perfectly. But, if I don't reboot the laptop and have to close the lid for a second time its ALWAYS freezes on the 2nd resume. The mouse pointer does not respond and the keyboard as well. Even tried external mouse and nothing.
I've searched the forums for hours yesterday and saw similar complaints for those running XFCE. So lastnight I re-installed Arch with Kde-meta and tested resume a few times and it was working just fine. Then just resumed the 2nd time today and notice it again. Now the only thing related I can think off (hope this does not throw things down the wrong direction) is that I saw a "Nvidia X Settings" app in the start menu under "settings". I launched it to have a look but it ask to run the following command as root first...
    sudo nvidia-xconfig
...running that informed me that it generated this file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf
And so after rebooting, both startx and xinit would fail to start KDE (tried them independently).
    To revert, I did:
    mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bk
I also did pacman -Rsn xf86-video-intel then pacman -S xf86-video-intel
... tried rebooting and kde this time auto started again. However, still after every 2nd resume from opening lid, everything freezes and have to hold in the power button to power off.
I'm pretty sure I have some drivers or packages mixed up.
What's the best way to solve this? Or best command to see whats running what etc (drivers-wise)? Originally I used the chart in the wiki page https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/xo … stallation and installed the following packages:
xf86-video-intel (for the inter graphics card)
    nvidia (for the Nvidia GPU)
    bumblebee (as per archlinux.org.ru/forum/topic/12113/?page=3)

  • [Solved] Asus 1215N - Freeze, crash when Suspend or Normal Use

    Hello everyone,
I have installed Arch Linux i686 as always on my Asus 1215N. And, even before install any of the "problematic" applications needed for a full experience on this netbook, like acpi_call and bumblebee my pc start to became slow and then freeze just by using it, kernel panic at a random time, and something he doesn't Suspend/Reboot/Shutdown...
    There is my configuration :
    Asus 1215N - 2Gb Ram
    Arch Linux (Updated) i686
    Xfce 4.8 and Slim
    Kernel 3.1.1-1-ARCH
Here is an example of my /var/log/error.log when one of the problems appear :
    http://pastebin.com/t2hTkBnr
Here is an example of my /var/log/kernel.log when one of the problems appear (This one is by using acpi_call):
    http://pastebin.com/FvNNxG3X
    Some usefull informations :
The problem doesn't seem to occur while using Gnome3 or Kde4.
My girlfriend as an Asus 1015HA (without Nvidia ION), and since the last kernel (?) update, she start to have the same problem using slim and openbox.
So I thinks this can be caused by Slim, ConsoleKit, DBUS or anything related to the Intel drivers... but it is just an opinion.
Thanks in Advance for the help (It is really boring I've even tought to come back to Ubuntu :S...)

The problem as been mysteriously solved by updating the kernel :S... Weird though...
I have checked the cpu temperature... very high only when the NVIDIA is activated... other than that it is a non-hot laptop ^^
    Thanks in Advance

  • Elder Scrolls: Oblivion - Temporary freeze

    Hi!
I have problems in the game:
I was roaming in the world when I saw an enemy and the game stopped for a while (2,3 sec.)  and suddenly continued.
After the enemy was beaten happened the second freeze.
In the game everything is fine (FPS,Sounds,Grapics etc.) until I meet an NPC/Enemy.
This bug makes the game unenjoyable, please help!
    Thx.

It's a wine problem. Another Arch user reported the same problem:
    http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p … n&iId=7506
Wine problems are usually solved by upgrading to a newer (and hopefully better) version, or by rolling back to a previous version wich didn't have this problem.
edit: Denacke beat me to it

  • [SOLVED] HP G62 - Freezes (Hardlock) Ralink 5390 Wifi setting up.

    Hi
    I got a HP G62 with a Ralink 5390 wifi card.
I downloaded and compiled the kernel and with the patches that come from opensuse.
    I used this thread
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=112170
and blacklisted rt2800pci and added rt5390sta in modules.
Rebooting computer ads a wlan0 as ralink device with all the info
iwconfig ads wlan0 and ifconfig finds wlan0 with what seems proper info
Starting wicd it finds networks and when trying to connect it freezes up after "setting up interfaces"
Everything is up to date. And have no idea how to solve the hardlock issues.
    EDIT
IT seems that it works for wep unsecured but not on wpa2 secured

why not try to use the official drivers instead?
    What official drivers?
    [SOLVED]
Solved by removing wicd and installing NetworkManager.
