[solved] Unable to detect HP All-in-one scanner

I have an HP Deskjet f2240 All-in-one. Printing works fine, however I'm unable to use the scanner. Under Ubuntu, I can scan using scanimage or xsane. Under Arch, scanimage -L says "No scanners were identified." Finally, if I run "sane-find-scanner" it outputs "found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0, product=0x2404) at libusb:004:005."
Anyone have any ideas?

I had same problem. Once I install xsane(and couple of other utils which I don't remember ofhand right now), the hp-toolbox started showing scan. Try doing it. xsane is not default in Arch.

    Hello louvallee,
If you had upgraded  you PC OS to win 8.1 and if you were able print with the prior OS, then you may have to first uninstall the existing printer software and try step#

  • Deskjet F4435 All in One Scanner undetected, not working

I have  Mac O S X 10.6.8, and the deskjet F4435 all in one. My printer is working fine. I am having issues with the scanner. I open the scanner and it gives an error message, "Failed to open session on the device." I already uninstalled all the hp software and reinstalled it. The scanner used to work by using photosmart, scan, except now it searches for device and doesn't detect it. Please help me fix this problem.

Hello @computerilltrit  , welcome to the forums!
I saw your message, and I am hoping I have a fix for the issue you are having with scanning on 10.6. Below are the steps I would recommend that you try, and also do them in order they are written.
Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
    Repair disk permissions
    Restart the Mac
Download and install the Full Feature Driver here which contains scan software: HP Deskjet Full Feature Software and Drivers - Mac OS X v10.4, v10.5, and v10.6
Try scanning from the HP software and you should be able to scan, fingers crossed!

    Hi @Rufels
I would be happy to help you scan from your F4200 again. The following document addresses the very issue you have described; 'Another program has control of the scanner' Message Displays on the Computer When Scanning.

  • HP Officejet 1600 all-in-one Scanner ONLY suddenly not recognized

    Hi,
I seem to have ongoing issues with this machine. My computer randomly decides not recognize the scanner connection on my HP Officeseries 1600 All-In-One. Oddly enough, it recognizes the machine's printer and I can print with no problem. Yet in setting up the reinstalled software, it cannot find anything on the USB port. I uinstall and re-install the softwrae. The other day I used a new USB cord and it worked fine until this morning when I aborted a scan. From then on nothing I do will get the computer to recognize the scan via the USB port. I tried two other cables, one of which I know is good because I have another printer connected on that cable. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I revisited the HP website and they now have software for 10. 4, which they didn't the last time I had this problem. Downloaded that and now everything seems to be working fine....until next time, eh?

  • HP 8620 all-in-one: scanner becomes unavailable in print queue window when computer sleeps

I just bought a new printer/scanner/fax - HP 8620 all-in-one.  I have Mac OSX 10.9.3 and the most up to date drivers/software from the HP website (april 2014).  I have connected the printer via ethernet cable to our wireless router.  I have installed as per intructions.
When my computer goes to sleep, or the printer goes to sleep, I will return to the computer to find that the "scanner" is not available (ie greyed out when I go to "open scanner" in the print queue or system preferences, or try to use "HP scan". I tried a few things, like uninstall/reinstalling, and have worked out that if I reboot my computer the scanner option seems to "whiten" again (ie become available).
Is there a way to prevent this happening???? I don't have time to be rebooting every time I need to use the scanner!

You can't use the scan button on the printer. You have to start the scan from OS X.

  • Mac Mini and the HP Photosmart All in One Scanner

When I got my Mac Mini from MacMall, I got the free HP Printer (C3180 Photosmart all in one) printer works fine, copier works fine, but I am not able to Scan. HP is no help because their chat customer service reps "are only trained on PC related issues". The basic problem is that when I try to scan using the HP Device Manager, it either freezes up and I have to force quit or it comes up with a message saying scanner not found. I already re-installed the drivers, but no luck.
Any ideas? Anyone else have this problem?
    Thank you,
    Matsonian

Yes, I even reloaded the drivers and reinstalled everything. Interesting part.... when I reinstalled, for the first initial preview scan it worked, gave me the full image on the preview screen, but after that, nothing. Wouldn't re scan, would do a final scan. And from that point doesn't even see the scanner. Worked for 30 seconds, then nothing. Printer works, copier works, but scanner is MIA.

  • Best Home use All- in one scanner/printer that will run on linux

Doestic Use - UK .  What would members recommend as the best all-in-one printer scanner colour, to use on linux with full wireless  capability and photo mainipulation software addons etc.  Runnung Ubuntu based 14.04 - Linux Lite 2.4    Thanks

I think you will not get a general consensus. Canon is my preference, for both work and at home, but others will tell you they are rubbish, most likely due to a previous bad experience, such as your friend has had.
What I can say about the Canon products is that they have improved their driver and software functionality compared to the days of 10.2. There are still some shortfalls, but there is definitely more support for OS X than there ever was previously.
With your friends requirements in mind, I would suggest the MX700. It offers Ethernet and USB connections for printing, faxing and scanning. It also does a reasonable job of photo printing.

  • My iMac has stopped connecting to my HP all-in-one scanner

Several weeks ago I attempted to use my scanner that had been working fine on the installed Mac software but my Mac would not connect.  The HP C5180 all-in-one works fine on print but not scan.  I hooked up the HP to my laptop and all functions correctly.  I installed the HP Mac software on my iMac successfully but again, no scanner.  Any advice?

Shame. Are you connected via a cable or wifi?
Some others on here have often reported problems when using the HP software that comes with the printer/scanner and recommend completely uninstalling that using the HP Uninstaller and simply use the HP software that is installed on the Mac. Latest version here: HP Printer Drivers v.2.6 for Mac OS X v10.6
If that fails you could try 'resetting the printing system' - just possible it might clear up whatever is upsetting the scanning side.
System Prefs>Print & Fax, Control+Click or Right+Click on the printer and select reset printing system. It'll delete all your printers and they'll need to be added again.

  • HP PSC 1507 All-in-One - Scanner stopped working

    Hi
I'm on a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and use VueScan (9.1.16) to scan through USB connection.
For several years, no problems, always worked.
No all of the sudden it stops working.
    It scans jitter (black/grey/white dots).
Anythings I can fix or look at to see what's the problem?
    Thanks
    Dee

Hello Dee! aka @KunoichiDee, welcome to the forums
I read about how your scans are now showing up in bad quality, when scanning to your Mac. I have some ideas that might help.
First of all, we want to know if the problem is with the printer, or with the software. Make a copy from the printer itself to test the printer. If the copies have the same issue as the scans, the issue is with the printer, and I would recommend a power reset and ensure the printer is plugged in directly to the wall outlet, avoiding power bars and surge protectors. This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help greatly.
    Power reset:
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
If the copies turn out fine, and the problem is only when you scan, try these steps:
Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system (This will delete all printers on your Mac)
    Repair disk permissions
    Restart your Mac
Re-add the printer (do not use the AirPrint driver)
Let me know the results! Good luck & enjoy your weekend

  • HP Photosmart C7180 All in One Scanner problem

I received this unit a couple of years ago second hand, so any setup required was already done when I got it. The scanner always has worked and when I placed a document inside to scan, I would hit the scan button and the menu would give me several options for scan including PDF file, TIF, etc. I would choose PDF, plug my laptop into the usb, and it would scan the item onto my pc laptop. When I tried to scan last time, the only scan options that come up on the menu are Scan and Reprint and Scan to Memory Device. If I hit either option, the menu takes me to a photo printing screen where I only have choices of photo size etc. I don't know what happened, but it seems to me there must be some way to reset this thing for document scanning options instead of photo scan function. I called HP support and didn't get anywhere, also tried a suggested power reset by unplugging the unit, waiting, then reattaching power cord. No change. The HP support thought I might need to reinstall software, which I don't have on my computer and I'm not really too great with these machines anyway. Any ideas?

Hello MC1970, welcome to the forums
I saw your post about no longer having all of the scanning options you used to have when scanning from your Photosmart C7180.
I would also suggest a reinstall however, to help you better and provide you with the links to describe what to do better, I would need to know which operating system you are running on your computer. Please let me know and I will reply back to you!

  • Canon Pixma MP470 all in one scanner printer "scan fail"

I found earlier posts that described similar problems as mine, they were marked as answered. I continue to have problems even tho I have followed earlier instructions from other members i.e. PAHU.
I am trying to use a Canon MP470 printer connected by USB cable to my iMac. I don't use it much and it has worked unreliably in the past. Today all scans fail except one which to me would mean that I have installed the correct driver for OSX 10.6. I am not sure if I have deleted the old preset and created a new preset for the new driver correctly. I hate to say it but I am a little unsure how to go about this. I don't remember having as much trouble before I upgraded to OS 10.6.3.
If anyone has some suggestions or instructions, I sure would appreciate them.

Okay, the Presets in this post did refer to the Printer preset. The poster had a black and white preset they had created with a previous OS and was trying to use it on Snow Leopard, which did not work because the printer driver was different on the new OS. This does not apply to the scanner portion of your MP470.
As for checking the scanner driver version, this is not an easy task. But the new driver installation typically overwrites the previous version. If you are not sure which driver install you did last, I suggest you run this v13.9 installer again. to ensure it is what you are using.
I would also suggest you have MP Navigator v2.04 or later installed, as earlier versions may not be that compatible with Snow Leopard. Again, running the newest version of MP Navigator installer should overwrite an older version.
If you have the latest MP Navigator and it is still not scanning correctly then please reply. At least you now know about Image Capture so if you did find that MP Nav stopped working, you are not totally stumped
