[Solved] Unable to write to an external hard drive

Hi Everybody,
I installed the Nov iso and plugged in my external hard drive. The mount command says:
/dev/sr0 on /run/media/ly/WD SmartWare type udf (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=100,umask=77,iocharset=utf8,uhelper=udisks2)
/dev/sdb1 on /run/media/ly/My Book type ntfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=100,fmask=0177,dmask=077,nls=utf8,errors=continue,mft_zone_multiplier=1,uhelper=udisks2)
I and even root were unable to create a file / directory on /run/media/ly/My Book. Does anybody know how to fix?
Thank you.
PS: Before I installed the Nov iso, I was able to read / write from that My Book.
Thank all of you. You all are great. The reason I mentioned the Nov iso is that since I re-installed my machine with the Nov iso, a lot of things don't work as before. I don't blame the Nov iso, I just wanted to list all the things I did to my machine so that you see the whole picture.
A lot of things which don't work as before include:
- gnome seems to ignore the metacity directory in a gtk theme (I use gnome-tweak-tool to install a new theme, I can see changes everywhere but not at the window title bars, but when I copy the metacity files of the new theme into the metacity directory of the default theme which is Adwaita, I can see the changes)
- it's very un-intuitive (is it a word?) to change the wallpaper: until now I still don't know how to use my own wallpaper
- nautilus seems to hide the preferences: I cannot find it to change some things like single click to open a directory, show hidden files, add the Delete item to the menu ...

  • Suddenly can't write to an external hard drive that I have been using consistently

I have been using a WD 1 terabyte external hard drive to transfer movie files between 2 MBP's and suddenly I cannot write any files to the HD.  The error message is that the external hard "cannot be modified" if I try to add any files.  I have tried the same hard drive on another MBP and it works fine and I can write to the hard drive (with the aid of Paragon NTFS for Mac OS).  I have Paragon NTFS on my computer as well and have been able to write to the hard drive previously. I spoke to Western Digital phone support and told them the problem and noted that the icon for the hard drive is grey with a clock on my computer and is orange on the other MBP.  They explained that the icon change was due to Time Machine on my computer.  I currently have Time Machine turned off.
Of note, I recently upgraded my internal hard drive on my computer to a WD 500 GB internal drive.  Not sure if this will make a difference.  Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Found the issue.  When I changed the internal hard drive, most softward transferred over, but not all.  I had to reinstall the Paragon NTFS and I was then able to write to the external hard drive.  That seemed to solve the problem.

  • I do not have permission to write in my external Hard Drive

    Hello everybody.
I have recently bought a MacBook Pro (15, 2.16 Ghz with OS X 10.4.9) and I have a Beyond Micro 300Gb external Hard drive that I have been using with my PC. This drive has a Windows NT File System.
When I first plugged it to the Mac, I changed its name to recognize it better. Now, I am not able to transfer documents from my Mac to it, but I am able to do so through the PC.
    Am I done something wrong?
Am I blocked this drive? (Once open, I see a pen crossed on the lower left corner)
And if so, Could I unblocked it to make it writable?
When I try to transfer any documents with the Mac I get a message saying that I can't do it and because I do not have permission. (I am the administrator).
I read a previous posting talking about a similar problem, but I really couldn't understand the solutions and/or differences beteween NTFS, FAT 32, MS-DOS and MacFuse (I am a complete novice).
I also tried (as suggested in the posting) to use the Disk Utility to set the permissions from there, but when I select the external Hard Drive all the options are dimmed. Also, the info panel says I only have permissions to write, having no other available alternatives to choose from.
The question is: How can I make this drive available to both Operating Systmes without erasing all the information inside (format)?
    Thank You in advance.

    Thank You rvdparis
I have just intalled MacFuse (with Tools and Core) and it does allow me now to read and write in my external Hard Drive.
Once again, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
And yes guys, this seems to work. Forget about formatting your external hard drive. MacFuse changes the permission instantly.

  • Permisions to read and write on a external hard drive

Currently I am working with two Mac Air. One of them with Mac OS X 10.9.5 and the other one with Mac OS10.7.5.
Also I have most of my files in an external hard drive.
When I try to move file from the Mac air with Mac OS10.7.5 to the hard drive, I have no problem.
When I try to move file from the Mac air with Mac OS X 10.9.5 to the same hard drive, I am unable to do this action
because the hard drive appears as a read only (drwxr-xr-x)
Does any one knows how to change the settings to allow to write in the hard drive ( being able to save files from my
    computer to the hard drive)
    Thank you for your help.
by the way, the hard drive is not apple.

    Dear Kappy
That's the problem. In the show information window doesn't appear any little lock anywhere as it appear in other windows
such as safety and privacy or in parenteral control.
Perhaps the lock to unlock this window is somewhere else in the preference settings.
I can try to see if with the Mac air with Mac OS10.7.5 I can change these settings,
but so far, I haven't being able to find a way to change permissions to read and write
    through the information window.
    Thank you for your collaboration

  • Being able to 'Read & Write' on an external hard drive on the Mac

    Hi there,
I can't seem to be able to add things to my external hard drives on my MacBook Pro. I can with my USB stick but not with the larger external hard drives. Could someone help me change the permission settings to allow me to 'Read & Write' rather than just 'Read Only'.
    Thanks
    Nadia

How is this drive formatted? If it is NTFS then it is read-only. In order to use it on the Mac you will have to repartition and reformat the drive. On the other hand if it is properly partitioned and formatted for the Mac and the drive has become read-only then there is a different solution.
    For the first alternative:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    For the second alternative:
Fix No Access Permissions on HD.

  • Not able to write on an external hard drive

I recently bought a external hard drive (Seagate) and formated that to NTFS. I used this to store files from my PC. Recently I bought my iMac, and when I connect the hard drive, it recognized it, but I am not able to transfer files from my iMac to the hard drive. Any suggestions on how I can achieve this?
    Thanks

Mac can't write to NTFS formatted drives.
If the drive is plugged into a Windows PC, you could write to it via file-sharing with Windows, however.

  • Hi everyone, after updating to 10.6.8, i've been unable to backup to my external hard-drive on Time Machine. anyone having same issues?

I did a software update to 10.6.8. and I've been unable to back up my files to my external hard-drive on Time Machine. The error message it gives says "he backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."
It recommends using Disk Utility to repair the backup disk and i've tried that but it finds nothing wrong with the disk!
I even tried copying files off it so i could re-format the drive but it apparently can't do that and the error message is that there's a wrong case sensitive file. Please help, I really need a solution.
    Thanks,
    Regards,
    Chi.

If you mean you're getting the same message:
see #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.   It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.    If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup (especially the destination for the backups), what you've done, and the results.
If that's not the message you're getting, please clarify.

  • Mac OS X 10.9.1 will not read or write my WD external hard drive. How can I permanently make it so that it can without losing files on drive?

I have a Macbook pro 10.9.1 that will not communicate with my WD external hard drive. Whenever I connect the drive, this pops up:
    NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk1s1
at /Volumes/Elements because the following problem occurred:
    dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/local/lib/libfuse.2.dylib
      Referenced from: /usr/local/bin/ntfs-3g
      Reason: image not found
I have important photos and videos on here of my family and can't lose them. I tried downloading multiple third party applications like Tuxera and NFTS 3G but they're only trials. How can I permanently set up my mac to read and write without risking to lose all my stuff on the external hard drive. Thanks in advance for any support.

babowa, it seems like it is using Fuse & NTFS, so I don't think it's the classic WD + 10.9 mess, but extra WD tools & drivers can still break things MtTran.
MrTran, if you must use unsupported disk formats on your Mac you must also consider actually paying the developers that made the trial software.
It's probably a good idea to follow the developers removal instructions, reboot & then install one tool at a time.
MacFuse, FuseOSX, NTFS-3G are all likley to confict if you run older versions so you need to be sure you are using the latest version. I can't remeber which one depends on the other, so you will need to read the manuals.
When the disk is readable copy the data to another disk. You could probably do this from a Linux distro or Windows if OS X won't do it.
If you insist on only using the trial versions you will need to reinstall Mac OS, copy data off this disk & reformat it.
Is there any good reason for not using the Mac HFS extended format?

  • Unable to print or use external hard drives via Airport Extreme

    Hi.
I installed Airport Extreme with no problems. Airport utility program shows everything is ok, and shows my printer (Canon LBP5100) and my two external hard drives which are connected to Airport via USB-hub.
My airport extreme is connected to ADSL-router and is providing another WLAN in my house. The internet connection works fine, but I couldn't print nor use my hard drives. I installed the printer using the bonjour guided printer installation tool.
I haven't heard that my printer would not be compatible with airport extreme so was my airport purchase totally unnecessary or what tricks should I use to make the printer and the external hard drives be available?
    Sincerely,
    Jarkko

    Hi.
Thank you for your reply. No help though.
    Printer gives me this warning:
The network cable is not connected, or the printer is not turned on. Check these items.
And still the hard drives are not visible anywhere.

  • Error Code -36; I can't write to an external hard drive

I've Googled this extensively, but I haven't had any luck finding a solution. It's really frustrating.
I recently -- after a long time putting it off -- ran all the most recent software updates. Made my computer run a lot better, but now I'm having external hard drive issues. Perhaps the updates were unrelated, but it seems awfully coincidental.
When I try to transfer any large file (I've tried with a number of .avi's), I get 'Error Code -36.' Doesn't matter which hard drive I use (a Samsung 160Gb and a 1Tb Western Digital). Both are FAT-32, so they're readable on a PS3. Is the format the issue? Does my Mac now, for some reason, not like the PC format?
I hope I've given enough information. Any help would be unbelievably appreciated.

  • Unable to view files on external hard drive. Progress Bar

I have been deleting various files from my external hard drive and now I cannot see the remainder of the files. Although the Trash is empty, it still shows there is something there and I get a small window that shows progress bar. I can still see the external hard drive files via spotlight, so they are still there. I have tried
    Force Quit
    Restart
    Shut Down
    Forced Shut Down
I feel sure that has something to do with the Trash?
    Please...Any Ideas

  • Why can't I read or write from my external hard drive?

Hey there, I recently borrowed my brother's laptop to use as a media station for listening to music from, and watching movies, in order to free up some space on my main macbook.  In trying to migrate some files over, I discovered that my hard drive, a 320 GB WD Elements drive, is having some problems which I've never encountered before.  It has always worked fine in the past, but now I can't transfer any files to or from it, from either computer.  In all of my troubleshooting, I've gotten various errors, (-36, -50), and various messages saying how the device can't be read or written from, or how some files contian unreadable data, etc.
Disk Utility found an unused node when verifying the disk, and notified me that the disk needed to be repaired.  I then used Disk Utility, which said it was able to successfully repair it, but the same problem remains, and after verifying the disk, it still says it needs to be repaired.  I've tried to find any files that may be causing the problem, and was finally able to delete a seemingly troublesome file that was stuck in my trash bin from the external drive after trying various apps, (ie Trash It, Cocktail, What's Keeping Me?).  This didn't end up solving anything...I've used terminal to eliminate some other potentially problematic files, with no luck still, and I'm not too confident with Terminal so I don't want to be messing around too much without more guidance.
Most recently, I've used Disk Warrior to try to solve the problem, but still with no success.  When I use the app to Check All Files and Folders, it does so for only a few seconds, then reports that "An unexpected error ocurred while attempting to perform file operations" for several files, and that several files' "Property list is damaged and cannot be repaired".  When using Disk Warrior to REBUILD the drive, the app pauses for about 15 seconds, then says that it can't be rebuilt because it is in use.  Again, I've used the What's Keeping Me? app to kill any activity with the drive, and the same error occurs.
I've spent a lot of time trying to sort this out...It's very frustrating, and I have a lot of files that mean a lot to me on my drive, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks a lot!
    Ryan

I have this problem too with my Western Digital 1TB My Passport for Mac.
Downloaded Card Data Recovery - did not work. The software self terminated itself when the problematic WD is connected. Starts up fine when the WD is not connected by USB.
Then I downloaded Remo Recovery. Starts up fine, scans fine and appears to save the files but ALL the files 'saved' are unreadable.
Finally, downloaded Stellar Phoenix in a last ditch attempt to recover my precious video files. Starts fine, saves fine BUT it cannot save files above 200MB because the WD stops working every 10 minutes. So, did not solve my problem totally because I have so many files above 200MB.
And yes, I PAID for all the software above. And the first two software are reluctant to refund me my money until their development team can ascertain whether it's a software bug, over online web conference. And because of the time differences, I can never get online with them. So, all my money gone.
Until one day I opened Activity Monitor and noticed this 'fsck_hfs' starting up everytime I connected the problematic WD My Passport for Mac.
So, tried to Force Quit 'fsck_hfs' and VOILA!
A dialogue box popped up and says that the Passport for Mac cannot be repaired and that I can move and copy files from it but not save to it.
    PHEW!!
At least I can access the files and save them to my Seagate 1TB although now I am having a problem opening FCP X project files rescued from the WD.

  • Why can't I write to my external hard drive?

I have a new Macbook pro, but when I plug in a USB hard drive it is "Read Only." I can find various places to change this, but they are never active for me.  Anyone know what to do? Thanks!

How is the external drive formatted?
If it is formatted as NTFS and your Mac doesn't have third party software to support wrting to NTFS then it will be read only.

  • [Solved] Failed to open directory of external hard drive

When I plug in my hard drive it is detected and booted as normal but when I try to open it up using a file manager, I get an error message saying:
Error when getting information for file '/run/media/blah/Blah/LOST.DIR': Input/output error.
    When I use the command:
    ls /run/media/blah/Blah
    It displays:

Yeah sounds like either a corrupt filesystem (hopefully), or a failing drive (hopefully not). Take anonymous_users advice, or do a fsck on it.
Check the SMART status as well. I think the package is smartmontools, but I am on the train right now and checking is a PITA.
