  • [SOLVED] Upgrading to KDE 4.8 shows "kdmrc.pacnew"

    Hello
    first sorry for my english
12 hours ago I did a # pacman-Syu and it appears the update to kde4.8.
Some 500 mb later, no error in the update, review the log file in the same console and see a line saying that the downloaded file / usr / share / config / kdm / kdmrc is installed as / usr / share / config / kdm / kdmrc.pacnew
I know the purpose of this is to rename kdmrc.pacnew to kdmrc if no changes or if I have customized the kdmrc, so I make a Kompare of the two files to check ... and. .. my surprise ... the former has 71 lines and kdmrc.pacnew ...591! so I do not know what to compare ... half of the lines of the old kdmrc match but the rest are new and most commented (indicating uncomment to use different options than the default)
What should I do? Do I need to rename the old. "Old" (for example) and "kdmrc.pacnew" moved to "kdmrc"?
I left the pc switched on until a response ... I dare not to shut down
    regards and thanks
    P. S. Kompare application is curious ... What will the "apply the difference"? ¿Merge the old configuration with the new?

guelfi wrote:Then why don't you do this? If you didn't customize kdmrc, it is completely safe to rename the kdmrc to kdmrc.pacnew. If you did, your changes will be lost. That's the worst thing that could happen, because the new kdmrc will work (as it is the stock kdmrc).
I don't know the changes to kdm with kde 4.8 (I don't even use kde), but I think kdm is more likely to break if you don't use the new config.
    Thanks guelfi...
I'm agree with you... I think I didn't customize kdmrc (maybe the kdm theme and the default user to show). Only I would like if someone did the renaming without issues and if I must to merge the files for more security.
    Thanks again

  • [solved] Upgrade to KDE 4.7: lost notes widgets

I'm an avid user of KDE notes widget. Unfortunately, KDE 4.7 lost all my notes widgets..
After a bit of panic (there's some important stuff on my notes), I've been able to restore the contents of the notes by searching into file ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc .. your notes will be there encoded in HTML. Just copy and paste that to an newly created .html file and open it with your favorite browser. Then copy and paste to a new notes widget in the new system.
    Hope this helps,

ok I solved Amarok crash....my /var was full preventing any write in it. I guess that reading an uncached music in amarok would try to write to /var/tmp directory.
Still got my problem with Kdenlive...

  • [Solved] Problems in KDE after upgrade

    Hello,
After the recent upgrade in KDE, it hasn't loaded correctly. I get the login screen and then the splash screen, but the splash screen fades out quickly and neither the taskbar/kickoff bar nor my wallpaper load. I have conky and yakuake starting with kde (through the ~/.kde4/Autostart/ folder) and they partially load. They have full functionality, but transparency is not working.
I've already looked over these threads: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=932598, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=123536, and the trouble-shooting portion of the kde wiki (here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kd … leshooting). I'm running a home-built machine with an AMD processor and an nVidia video card (nouveau driver).
I tried changing my settings in ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc to disable composting, and I've tried doing a full install as that helped several people. Neither helped. I'm hoping that someone will understand the above errors and can guide me to fixing it.
    Thanks!

I have now tried a clean user, and it works. I don't know what's causing the difference. I noticed that the new user (tester) had a `.xinitrc' file in the home directory and my original user (hanksa) did not. I copied that file over, but I still had the same problem. I'm thinking it's with KDE -- one of my settings, not the programing -- because I can still launch applications from yakuake (I have this autostarting for both users with the same launch scripts). It seems that it is just the desktop wallpaper and the kickoff panel that aren't loading.
I can't check all my settings because I don't know where KDE stores them, and I don't know how to launch KDE's graphical `Systems Settings' application from the command line. I have a lot of personalized settings, so I would rather not just overwrite everything with the new user's home directory.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
EDIT: I found how to open the `System Settings' application (http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-List … 02758.html) from the command line. For anyone interested, the command is systemsettings. I checked through my settings and nothing seemed strange or in fact different at all from my new user (tester).

  • [SOLVED] KDE 4.3 upgrade. Kde-meta-kdeplasma-addons conflict

Hello. Today i decided to upgrade my kde 4.2.4 to 4.3. After i execute:

there is some warnings in output:
Warning: provider package was selected (kde-meta-kdeplasma-addons provides kdeplasma-addons)
I don't want to install any kde-meta package. But this is no problem. I can delete them after.
    Problem is that:

How to resolve that? Or maybe i must install manually all packages in kdeplasma-addons group?

  • Trouble upgrading to KDE 3.5.4

I'm trying to upgrade my KDE to v3.5.4, but it is not being recognized in the extra repositories.  Are some mirrors just not updated yet?
    Thx.

I do not think so. I upgraded yesterday and after rebooting today in the morning I got an endless string of errors. I figured that it was likely a bug of some sort and went to console and run pacman -Syu and sure enough there was an upgrade for KDE.
I accepted the upgrade and all is well: conclusion the upgrade is working.
What command are you issuing for the upgrade? or you just want to upgrade KDE?

  • Amarok issues after upgrade to KDE 4.6.2

Yesterday after upgrading to KDE 4.6.2 and rebooting, amarok started having issues.  I was already running amarok 2.4.0-4 before the upgrade and it was working well.  After the upgrade, it would start normally in the tray but crash every time I tried to maximize it.  So I cleared out all amarok config files from ~/.kde4/share/apps and ~/.kde4/share/config.  After restarting and reconfiguring, the crash went away.  However, now the window does not stay maximized after closing it to the tray.  If I maximize, close to tray, and then open it, the window opens with 1130x540 dimensions, and the widths of the three main panels has been reset.  It's not critical since it stopped crashing with a clean config, but it's an annoyance.  Maybe it just needs to be recompiled with the new kdelibs or something.  Anyone else experience the same thing?

Here's what's printed in the terminal when the crash happens:
    amarok(12603)/libplasma Plasma::FrameSvg::resizeFrame: Invalid size QSizeF(0, 0)
    amarok(12603)/libplasma Plasma::FrameSvg::resizeFrame: Invalid size QSizeF(0, 0)

    amarok(12603)/libplasma Plasma::FrameSvg::resizeFrame: Invalid size QSizeF(0, 0)
QSocketNotifier: Invalid socket 30 and type 'Read', disabling...
    KCrash: Application 'amarok' crashing...
About one out of 10 times, it also causes kwin to crash and restart.

It seems that some old file has been existed and the installation cannot be taken successfully.

    Thanks

Run "pacman -Qo /usr/share/apps/bball/bball.svgz" and if it belongs to some package, remove that package. If not, use -f pacman switch.

    Any solutions?
Since i'm newbie, the only thing i can think of is forcing the removal of said packages and then re-install the kdeedu group or whole KDE, but it doesn't seem like a good idea.
Edit: also tried another mirror to be sure but nothing changed.
Edit2: I removed kdeedu-data and the 4 packages that relied on it with a simple -R and when the upgrade was complete i just re-installed the kdeedu group package to get the 4 packages i removed earlier.
Some info that might help developers prevent this from happening again: The standard behavior afaik on today's upgrade is pacman asking you to remove the kdeedu-data package and then the upgrade proceeds normally.
In my case the system was about one month old and on my -Syu today i upgraded pacman first. So basically i'm coming from an "older installation".

Stop bumping. Use the edit button.
Not sure why it jokes on this, as the files should not be part of kdeartwork-wallpapers:
    http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra … allpapers/
Maybe your mirror has not synched completely yet? You could check manually if it already has the new kdebase-workspace.
Apart from all that, you could just hold back kdeartwork-wallpapers for now and update the rest.

    pierluigi;
The file you referred to has the previous kdelibs and kdemultimedia as well as the new versions.
I assume I could force the old versions into their slots but then don't know what would then occur because I have no clue as to dependencies.  Several packages were downloaded at the same time and I assume they could well be dependencies.
    I receive a SIGSEGV (Signal 11) warning upon boot-up.

    Tnx

I also noticed that menus in qt applications aren't working.
I can confirm. All application menus are completely broken in multi monitor setups. They refuse to show if application is not on the main screen. When it is on the main screen they show but most of the time are broken - wrong position, wrong size etc.
Getting this too. Need it fixed soon, thanks.

  • [SOLVED] Kwin refusing to launch after recent upgrade to KDE 4.13.1

    Hi,
I upgraded from 4.13 to 4.13.1 and I have this problem:
    ➜ ~ kwin
kwin: error while loading shared libraries: libkactivities.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
How can I fix this? I cannot see desktop, all I can do is to run ALT+F2 and run konsole...

You're right. Pacman screwed my configuration. Now it's fixed! Thank you in advance :-)
