  • HP USB Drive not detected

I bought a new 16GB HP USB Drive a day ago. The drive is not recognised by my mac. When I plug the drive in nothing happens.
    - other USB drives work as normal
    - I tried both USB ports (i.e. it's not a mac hardware issue)
    - the USB drive works with my PC
I don't see the USB drive in the disc utilities option. Can anyone suggest what I should do next?
    Thanks in advance

The following  worked for me like a charm but you have to try it at your own risk.
1- Using Bootcamp switch to Windows. It will detect your memory flash HP 16 GB.
2- Click on my Computer, then right click on HP 16GB icon
    3- Select Format
4- Format your Flash selecting FAT32
5- When finished reboot back to MAC and you are ready to go.
    Hope it works for all.
You don't need to boot into Windows, you can format the drive using Disk Utility in OSX

  • [SOLVED]usb drive not mounting

I get this error when I try to mount a usb drive in pcmanfm. It used to work correctly before. Since then I tried uninstalling fam and installed gamin. But now I have reverted back to fam and I still see this. What could be the issue?  I can mount the drive manually in CLI, but I was just wondering what suddenly happened.

  • Dodgy 10.4.4 upgrade - USB drives not detected

Something strange happened to me last time I ran Software Update. Out of the four updates available -- iTunes 6.0.2, iPod Updater 2006-01-10, QuickTime 7.0.4 and Mac OS X 10.4.4 -- only the first two ran successfully, while the two other displayed red warning signs showing they hadn't been installed. That's strange, I thought -- never happened to me before. Anyway, after clicking OK, Software Update scanned again for updates and again listed the QuickTime update, but not the Mac OS X update. I proceeded to install QuickTime, successfully this time, and then restarted.
After restart I looked in the About this computer dialog, which told me it was running 10.4.4. I didn't reflect further on this, since things seemed okay, but since then I've noticed that the computer can't find my iPod when I plug it in, nor my USB flash drive. The iPod is recognized only if it is plugged in during a restart. Logging out and then in again doesn't work. (I haven't tried on the USB drive.)
Strangely, while the Software Update log doesn't list the 10.4.4 update, it won't appear when running Sotware Update itself. So while the log can't recall installing it, the program thinks it did?
Anyway, I'll try to manually download 10.4.4 and install it. If anyone has some other tip, I'd be grateful.

Ok, don't mind me I managed to install it 10.4.4 again (after first discovering I couldn't mount disk images, then downloading to my iBook instead and sending the .pkg to the iMac, running the install once and only getting through 60% of it, and the inexplicably succeeding on the second try). Everything now works as expected! Happy, happy, joy, joy!

  • [SOLVED] Hard Drive not detected

    Hi,
I've bought Hitachi Touro Desk Pro 2TB USB 3.0 external drive recently, however there's a problem using it in Linux. I can fully see it in Win7 x64 disk manager, but running sudo fdisk -l or parted -l gives me only my internal sda drive. Additionaly, having connected the drive to pc when arch linux booting - it just stucks on "Waiting on UDev uevents to be processed" for approximetaly 20-30 secs and the continues with booting leaving the UDev uevents status failed. Dmesg then gives me this:

However i can see the drive in /sys/block or /dev/disk/by-id. In another opensuse machine the drive is accessible but only when connected during boot up, connecting it when the system is already on does nothing.
Having the drive formatted/unformatted,gpt or mbr type doesn't change a thing.

This is what i've found out: Adding "usb" hook to initcpio removes the hang when booting and makes the disk being able to be accessible and detected by both fdisk and parted but sometimes after restart or rebooting to Win and back to Arch introduces the hang again, i have to unplug the disk from power and plug back to remove the hang on next boot. I think the usb hook shouldn't be required since it's meant for usb root devices or when connecting at early start which is not my case, USB sticks don't need the usb hook at all anyway. What more I still get some warnings (probably not harmfull) on boot with either usb stick or sata disk connected no matter what. I would prefer to connect it quietly (without warnings) or not trying to connect the disk at boot at all and then kde should take care of it when logged into user account - any idea?
The impossibility reconnecting the disk when system is on is caused by the missing hotswap/hotplug feature for the disk because udev device manager treats it as internal, you can verify it like this: "cat /sys/block/sdx/removable". Creating udev rule with UDISKS_SYSTEM_INTERNAL=0 as stated at http://lamarque-lvs.blogspot.com/2011/0 … art-2.html solved the problem only for few sessions, after some restarts and reboots to Win it fell back to removable=0, funny isn't it?
So IMHO waiting for kernel update is pointless since the problem lays in how udev treats sata external drives generally, creating a proper udev rule to force a disk to be removable is crucial or maybe waiting for a udev bugfix to make the udisks_system_internal=0 value work and optionally adding some grub kernel parameter to NOT probe for external block devices on boot (to get rid off the confusing warings and the need for the usb hook) would be preferable for me.

    Hello,
I am running Arch Linux x86_64 with recent updates. I have k3b 2.0.3 and when I launch it I get message that it does not detect my optical drive, and I need hal daemon. I checked, udev is running, node in dev /dev/sr0 has root.optical, my user is in optical group. How do I fix this? I want to burn BluRay disk, maybe k3b even does not support it? And is there a better tool for optical discs than k3b? I use KDE 4 so Qt tool would be nice

  • [SOLVED]Mounting usb drives "not authorized" with thunar-volman (XFCE)

    Hi,
I'm new to Arch (even though I must be approximately at my 15th try at installing it properly) and I have a problem with thunar-volman.
Whenever I log in as user, and try to mount a usb drive with thunar, let's say I want to plug a drive labeled Ext3_8Go, I get the same message in a pop-up window : "Failed to mount Ext3_8Go (or anything close, not in English in the text), not authorized (that part is in English)"
    My install is :
    - net install
    - partitions : 9Go for /, no swap, no separate /home
    - packages : base and base-devel. The only modifications in the package list is that I remove ppp, pcmciautils, and xfsprogs.
    - config : at the install stage I only modify rc.conf to change LOCALE and HOSTNAME, and pacman's mirrorlist to allow all French mirrors in addition to the one at the top.
When the usb installation is over, I run this script :
"installation_xfce.sh"  (there may be some errors left, I modify this script as I learn) :
    #!/bin/bash
    # expected environment : freshly installed archlinux, login : root.
echo "Are you connected to internet ? If not, please Ctrl+C and reload this script when connected"
echo "Otherwise, press ENTER to continue installation"
    read var_dummy

    Thanks a lot !
    That worked !
I stumbled across this part of the wiki several times before, but didn't really understand so I had not tried.
If anyone's interested in the script, here's the corrected version :
    #!/bin/bash
    # expected environment : freshly installed archlinux, login : root.
echo "Are you connected to internet ? If not, please Ctrl+C and reload this script when connected"
echo "Otherwise, press ENTER to continue installation"

  • USB hard drive not detected on reboot

I am running Windows 7 Ulitmate 64-bit on my 2011 15" Macbook Pro. I have a USB Hard Drive (WD My Passport SE - USB 3.0/2.0 - 1 TB).
The hard drive is formatted for HFS+ and I am running Mac Drive 8 to detect it in Windows.
For some reason when I reboot (in Windows), the hard drive won't be there until I unplug it and plug it back in.
This is really annoying! Can anybody help me? I'm pretty good with things like this but I can't think of any reason this shouldn't be working right.
    HELP =T

I am having the exact same problem. WD 1TB Passport. USB 3.0 drive. Running on Windows 7 Pro 64 via Bootcamp.
My 1TB Passport is formatted with FAT32 and works with Windows and Mac OS.
I was getting the same problem when I was running Windows XP Pro on the same MacBook Pro. I was hoping the upgrade to Windows 7 would remidy the issue but it did not.
The drive light is on in a steady state when I boot and I have the same symptoms as reported by everyone else above.
In my research, I am leaning towards thinking that it is a power issue related to the cable used to connect the USB 3.0 Drive or something to do with the USB driver for Bootcamp, but researching the WD site suggests it's a power issue, not a faulty or failing drive.
I have a 500GB WD Passport USB 2.0 also attached to my computer, also running FAT32 and it starts up no problem. It's just the USB 3.0 drive that is having this issue.
Also worth noting; the drive is detected properly when I boot in Mac OS X. It's only the Windows side I have to unplug and plug back in to access the drive.

  • USB devices not detected in VMware [SOLVED; Using Virtualbox instead]

I am running Arch as a host and XP on VMWare workstation 7.  My primary purpose of installing XP on VMWare was to use my edit my Line6  POD (behaves as a usb sound card) and get my USB TV Tuner box to work. The big problem that I am facing is that VMWare is not detecting any USB device (not even my USB Hard Drive).
I have the usb controller installed.
    Any suggestions?

I don't know vmware but with other virtual machines there is often a configuration option whether usb drives should be automatically mounted or not. Sometimes automounting also only works if the vm has the focus, i.e. is the active window.

  • USB Flash Drive not detected after OS X Mountain Lion installed.

My MacBook Air 11 inch (Mid 2011) suddenly stopped detecting all my USB flash drives a week after upgraded to Mountain Lion.
I have a tiny 16GB USB flash drive (Sandisk Cruzer Fit), for daily work, that has never been unplugged from my MBA.
Everything was fine on Lion, and a week of Mountain Lion, until just when my MBA prompted me that my flash drive "was not ejected properly" after I re-opened the display/lid, or from sleep mode.
I thought I might have accidentally removed the flash drive unknowingly. So I tried re-plugging the flash drive, closed and re-opened the MBA lid, and the same error message "The disk was not ejected properly" occured. I repeated the steps for a few times (thinking my flash drive might be faulty) and at my last attempt, the flash drive was stopped detected. I tried several USB flash drives and external hard drives (of various brands) to both the USB ports of my MBA, only the external hard drives were detected (on both USB ports) and functioning. None of the flash drives was detected on either USB port.
The tested flash drives were plugged to another 13" MacBook (Unibody, Late 2008, OS X Lion) and they all worked fine.
I wonder if anyone faces the same problem, and solution(s) please?
Additional: OS X Mountain Lion re-installed and same problem occurs / No problem with OS X Lion.

I had the same issue after installing Mountain Lion from the App store. The issue is you are missing the IOUSBFamily.kext extension amongst others. The solution is to backup your macbook, then perform a clean install of Mountain Lion.
I had this done at the Apple Store and now everything is restored as well as performance speed being improved.
Note: When restoring your files (a clean install will delete all your files and applications), use the Migration Assistant.
I would recommend going to the Apple Store to do this because they can perform the clean install from a USB which is so much faster than the download form the App store.
    Hope this helps.
