[SOLVED] USB memory won't automount

Hi,
I'm on a fresh (latest 2013/2) ARch/LXDE installation.
Although PCManFM is configured to au tomount removable media, it isn't working (contrary to Wiki's declaration).
As can be seen from the terminal below, when inserted, the system recognaizes the device, although mtab don't reflect the change.
Please advise!
Thanks

Last time i played with PcmanFM, it required udisks to automount stuff and gvfs to handle trash. Look if it's still the case.

    Welcome to the forum.
First of all, fstab isn't dynamically updated.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab
The /etc/fstab file contains static filesystem information. It defines how storage devices and partitions are to be mounted and integrated into...
This means that YOU define which partitions are mounted at boot and with what options. It has nothing to do with automounting (which is handled by a different part of the system).
Second, reboot your computer if you updated the linux package (the Linux kernel) recently and you see a difference between these:
    $ uname -r
    3.4.7-1-ARCH
    $ pacman -Q linux
    linux 3.4.7-1
Then USB devices will start working again.
Alternatively, it could be because you don't have a proper ~/.xinitrc. Carefully read the wiki page for your DE/WM, from the top. Twice.

    HAL:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HAL#Troubleshooting
Also check your .xinitrc and make sure your lines matches this:
    exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
Lastly, you can also use udev to automount your drives:

  • USB memory drive won't mount

I tried to mount a USB memory drive on my relatively new MBA (10.6.4) today, but it doesn't mount. Sometimes it doesn't even show up in Disk Utility. When it does, only the disk shows up, the disk's name doesn't show up, it is grayed out. I did disk repair and verify and they are OK. It is USB 2.0. I have tried both USB slots.
I have tried the same USB memory drive on an older MacBook Air (Rev C, about 15 months old) and on a Powerbook and the USB memory drive mounts fine. I can open the drive and see the contents and manipulate the files etc.)
The USB drive is formatted "extended OS Journal".
I also tested out another USB memory drive and it too fails to mount properly as well on the new MBA.
I don't know whether it's a hardware issue or a Mac OSX issue so I posted here first.
The older MBA has 10.6.4 too.
Earlier this morning, the USB memory drives did mount on the new MBA but it was touch and go. Sometimes they did mount and I could manipulate files, but other times they didn't mount.
Now, this evening, they won't mount at all.

I checked Verify permissions and I repaired permissions after I tested out the USB drives. Seems like there were many permissions to be repaired even though I had just repaired them before.
I think sticking in the USB flash memory drives mucks up the permissions. I don't know why that is.
Maybe they have files created from older operating systems (10.6.1, and 10.3.9) that caused this.
In this case, I might have to check permissions and repair them every time I use one of these thumb drives especially if they contain files and folders from the older Macs.

  • Why won't the copying action stop? How do i quit it so i can shut down? Items i tried to copy to either my hard drive or my USB memory are not copying - why? And now can't quit them either!

I have a Western Digital My Book hard drive which i use to store my media/data/back up. I tried to transfer some files on my desk top to it yestrday and it was taking forever so decided to stop it. Now it just shows under the Copying box, stopping but it isn't? I tried then to down load the same images t my USB memory stick and now that is doing the same. I wonder if i is to do with upgrading to Mavericks as no problems before?
I have check my WD My book on another computer and thankfully all mmedia is still in tack!
How can i quit this copying so i can shut down my computer?
Any ideas as to why items are not copying to external memories and what if anything can i do to get it copying correctly again?
I really need to back up my work by tonight - help! Any suggestions there too?

option discovered in preferences. Really this and any feature that moves deletes or edits a users data should as far as possible be OFF BY DEFAULT. It shouldn't by default and without the users specific say do this dangerous and unnecessary thing without even letting the user know what it's doing!!! And then cause me a few hours (as i'm new to mac) searching for the option so as to switch it off. If i hadn't noticed the status cage declaring that it was copying files then i might never have twigged that this insane thing was occurring. And if i hadn't of noticed i would have been left maintaining the contents of the folder i copied the files to, the folder which as far as i was informed and so believed was also the location of the music files i was playing. How does Apple justify this 'genius' piece of software non-design? Surely it will hurt no one if this was off by default for new users - overall at least i dare say it would cause a lot less distress in the future for the unsuspecting public at large. Thanks for the support.

  • Formatting/erasing USB memory stick using Disk Utility - won't unmount

    Hi,
I've got a 2GB USB memory stick, and I'm trying to format it by erasing it on Disk Utility just as I have done with many USB memory sticks before now.
Whatever I try to do with this one though I get the error message:
    "Volume Erase failed with error:
    Could not unmount disk."
There are no manual switches on the USB memory stick to change, and I've checked that I have read/write privileges so I don't know what else to do. I can't find anyway of unmounting it.
I need this memory stick for transferring a large amount of files and it's the only one I've got, so any help that would stop me from buying a new one would be great!
    Thanks people.

sorry bro it's toast. the only time i had something like this happen the manufacture said the drive had to be re-flashed. if they provide the software online you got lucky. other wise they will tell you to send in and get it replaced (warranty valid)

  • RD 240 1046 11U won't boot if I have USB memory sticks plugged in to it, How do I get around this?

I have the boot order changed, so that it shouldn't even try to boot from the memory sticks, just the CD-ROM and the harddrive.
However, if I start up, the server just sits there with a flashing cursor until I shutdown.
If I remove the USB memory sticks, it boots fine.  They are SanDisk 64GB sticks.
Is there another setting that needs to be changed, or is there a problem with the server?
    Thanks!

    Dear all,
your input on the following problem would be appreciated:
We have encountered a problem with both the "logout" and "timeout" functionality used in eCRM, due to the use of basic authentication.
Following a users logout and/or timeout period expiring, we are invalidating the user's session, so any user info will be removed from the server memory, and if the user attempts to access the site again there will be a security challenge.
But since basic authentication is being used and the browser already has your authentication information, it just sends it again transparently.
Whether users will notice will depend on how many windows they have open, and which browser they're using.
For example, in IE 5, if you open the secure site in a browser window, and close that window (using the close button on the logout confirmation page), it will "forget" the authentication information. But if I open other windows while connected to the secure site, it remembers the authentication info. Even if the users don't notice, there is a security issue associated with this behaviour.......
Any thoughts/ideas on getting around this problem (other than the obvious - not using basic authentication!!)Send HttpServletResponse.SC_UNAUTHORIZED (401) in the response header: http://www.tapsellferrier.co.uk/Servlets/FAQ/authentication.html has more info.

  • KT3 Ultra 2 - USB memory disk causes BIOS problem (?)

    Hi,
I have a MSI 6380E mobo and everything was fine until I installed this USB memory disk (Veritech TinyDisk).
It seems that, since I installed the drivers ( Win98 ) and software, it somehow managed to mess up with the BIOS.
Now, I can't access my CDRW any more  ;(
When I go in the BIOS setup, it shows my DVD drive, HD and then a peripheral with only a list of numbers and no ID  ?(
    any help? ideas, suggestions?
    thanks

    1. Is the PSU sufficient to power USB devices?
    3. Did you enable all USB in the BIOS?
    4. Did you try all USB ports on the motherboard as well as on the brackets and/or front panel?
I did try different USB ports, but my problem isn't with the USB peripheral, it's with my internal, IDE CDRW and my DVD.
Somehow, when I installed the drivers & software for the USB device, it managed to render my Yamaha IDE CDRW and MSI IDE DVD drives useless.
(I didn't know it was even possible).
please note, the USB device works fine it just screwed my other devices.

    2. Did you upgrade to the latest BIOS?
Not yet, I was actually thinking of doing it, and hoping it might (magically) solve the problem.
Will the BIOS recheck for all hardware after the update?
Presently, my BIOS shows an unidentified (only numbers, no name) IDE peripheral next to the working and identified ones.

    5. Did you try newer OS such as WinME, Win2K and WinXP? Win98 you MUST have Win98 SE and above, but still it is very bad in implementing USB.
I'm using Win98 SE and also Linux.  Linux shows the same behaviour.  I am using Win98 for games and some limited webbanking (and using MSI LiveUpdate, which doesn't work with Linux AFAIK).
I won't use XP, might use Win2k if it could play my games.

  • CD to mp3 to USB memory = problems

Hi! My mother has bought a few CDs with bird song. For some reason, it doesn't play on her MacBook, though it does on the regular audio CD player, and also on my iMac. I can't see anything on the discs mentioning copy protection or anything like that. Anyway, I figured I could simply pop the CD into my computer, convert it to mp3s, put it on my brand new Kingston DataTraveler USB memory, and give it to her. Alas, for some reason my computer crashes when I try to move the files from the HD to the memory. The window that pops up showing the estimated time for the transfer just stops after a short while, and canceling doesn't help, the window remains open. Force quitting Finder makes everything crash, and I'm left to reboot (twice now).
At first I though there was some kind of conflict between iTunes (potentially "using" the mp3s somehow) and the transfer, but this happens even if iTunes is quit.
    Any ideas? Thanks.
17" iMac, intel core 2 duo 2.0 Ghz, 2 GB ram, 250 GB hd   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Wireless keyboard and mouse, Swedish OS

Most memory sticks are formatted for Windows. Thus file naming conventions won't match, and so data may not get transferred over. Archive said MPEG-3s on the hard drive as zip files using control-mouse click archive command.
Note both you and your mother probably can't have the music at the same time legally. While it won't prevent you from playing it, we have to mention this to stay within the law on the forums. If she wants the music, she needs to either buy it from you, or buy her own copy. Check the copyright laws for music in your state.

  • Random Errors fix one another pops up - One USB port won't install device's drivers

I am trying to get this computer to work and every time I fix something another issue shows up. It is like a sinking boat in a carton. First it was slow and just acting up. After a few tweaks I got RestoreHealth to run and fix the issue. No SFC isn't reporting
any errors. For the longest time chkdisk wouldn't run manually but every startup it would run says checking.. fixing... fixed. This would happen on every startup now that is solved and it reports back okay. There were some drivers not working got
those working. Visual Studio had some sensor drivers that were reporting errors to it is uninstalled to rule out that. Currently one USB port won't install any drivers for the device plugged in, or use a driver already installed. Other ports work and all the
devices plugged in work in other ports. I would assume the port is bad but there are some programs that used to work and now don't. I am thinking there is an issue installing programs but I am out of my depth currently.
One think I am wondering is about a line in the CBS.log. I really wish I could find a resource to learn more about how to read the logs. I know how to read some but there are things I just don't get, yet. A link to an article(s) about CBS logs
    would be great.
Here is the line I am curious about, even if it isn't part of the current issue I would like to know for futurereference:

  • Printing PDF's from USB memory stick on HP C7180

    Hi all,
Currently I'm away on business and my partner requires to print some documents. I would like to explain to her how to do this but without having the printer in front of me, I am struggling.
I have printed PDF's on my C7180 from a USB memory stick before, but I have forgotten how to do this. Could one of you guys explain how to do this step by step so I can relay this back home.
    Thanks in advance..
    Matzukengren.

  • Is there a problem with USB Memory Sticks and OSX?

This may not be the correct forum for this question but I don't know where else to ask!
I am having problems with a 64GB USB Memory Stick. Acrobat Reader can't read a pdf file on the memory stick but no problem from the hard drive. Acrobat Reader won't work from the memory stick. Music files (aif) won't play from the memory stick.
The memory stick came formatted for MS-DOS but I re-formatted it to MAC-OS Extended. I can write files to it but they don't seem to work from there. Is there some incompatability with OSX that I am not aware of? I would welcome some advice.

MAke sure the drive is inserted and mounted, then launch Terminal from /Applications/Utilities.  Type:
    mount
    and hit Enter.
One of the lines returned will contain the words, "/Volumes/<name of your flash drive>".  Copy that whole line and paste it here so we can see what's up.

  • Cannot eject USB Memory

    Hello,
I have a MacBook, purchased in 2006 (original Core Duo model, now running OSX 10.4.11). I am noticing that, after using USB memory sticks, I cannot eject them. When I click the eject arrow next to the drive icon, I get the spinning wheel of death, and then a prompt saying the drive is use. Now, I know that the drive is not in use because all programs are closed and the light on the memory stick is not flashing. Strangely, this happens with every model of memory stick I use (Patriot, Memorex, Sony, etc.)
Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have a solution?

    Hi,
The USB stick probably won't, "eject," because some files on it are still open. Mac OS, being UNIX-derived, treats file folders pretty much like files themselves when it comes to counting things that are, "open," on a storage medium. Finder windows essentially count as open files.
Be sure to close all files you've been using. You may even have to close the applications that had the files open in order for Mac OS to consider the files closed. Also close any Finder windows you have open displaying contents of the USB stick's folders.
If you are UNIX command line savvy, you can open Applications/Utilities/terminal, and use the lsof (list open files) command to see what's open on on the system. I don't have a USB stick handy at the moment, and I don't recall exactly where external media get mounted in the OSX fie system. Try intentionally opening something on the USB stick, say for example, "MyGreatPhoto.jpg." Use the following command in the terminal:
    lsof | grep MyGreatPhoto.jpg
Now you can see the whole path to your file as output from the command above.
Try closing everything on the USB stick then substitute the first dozen or so characters of the path name in place of MyGreatPhoto.jpg in the command above. If the path name contains special characters or spaces, enclose it in quote marks. For example (what you type may be different):
    lsof | grep "/Volumes/USB0/"
That should smoke out any straggler files left open.
The ultimate way of dealing with the problem is to shut Mac OS down, then remove the USB stick once the computer is off. This is a bit time-consuming, but is safe.
Not recommended, but if you must: Close all known open files on the USB Stick. Open a terminal window, the issue the command:
    sync
Sync tells Mac OS that you want all pending data in I/O buffers to be written out to their respective media. Now remove the USB stick. The only time to use this approach is if there is some reason you can't shut down the Mac, but you have to remove the USB stick.
    A few other ideas:
    1. Does your Mac account have administrative rights? Under certain conditions, you may not be able to eject media if you are not an administrator.
    2. Try checking the USB device with Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. It could be the file system structure on the USB device has an error that prevents the file system from being cleanly unmounted the the Eject command.
    Hope this helps!,
    Bill
