[SOLVED]Very strange laptop behavior: keymap changing on fly
I have had arch up and running on my Lenovo T440s without issue for over 2 months now. Today I ran into some very strange behavior. After being on for about 45 minutes, with only a browser and thunderbird running, the keyboard started being selective in which keys woud work. I could no longer mange the windows with my normal AwesomeWM key bindings. The only thing I could do was restart by turning off and back on. I checked journalctl and there had been a weird message around the time the error occured, something along the lines of "HKEY error 0x600, unknown thermal alarm or keyboard input".
Now I can barely login, ocassionally I can get my credentials input before the machine stops reading in certain letters. When I use xterm rather than the usual urxvt the letters are all some different unicode symbols, it's like the keymap has been changed to something bizarre on the fly, right after loading up. The time at which this issue arises is not predicatable, sometimes I can get further before it happens. For example, sometimes I can't even enter my username and other times I get a few minutes, just enough to try to enable sshd so I can effectively troubleshoot remotely. I was able to run an update and install lm_sensors remotely. The cpu temps are right at or below 40 deg C.
Any ideas on how to debug this would be very appreciated.

Hello, thank you for the reply.
Actually this is a laptop so the keyboard is internal. However I have input a usb keyboard from my desktop to try to isolate the issue when it occurs. I get the same behavior out of my desktop usb keyboard.
I am seeing no messages in the journal when the event occurs (since that one mentioned above happened yesterday). The problem has since arisen about 20 times and I am not getting any messages. Perhaps there is a verbosity setting in the journalctl config, I haven't yet had time to look into that.
Two other oddities /clues are:
1. When I go into the BIOS, I cannot get consistent response from the keys. At first the bios just beeps at me when I try to use the arrows of other keys, although usually eventually they start working. At first I thought this may have to do with me pressing several keys to initiate the bios rapidly as the boot is so fast, but now I'm not sure that's it--based on the amount of time that the unresponsive beep alarm is occuring for (sometimes I stop waiting and restart).
2. When I get the bad behavior, I am able to put the machine to sleep (suspend) temporarily by closing the lid for 5 secs and reopening it. After doing this I get normal keyboard behavior for another few minutes before it goes wonky again.
I need this machine for work in the evenings so any help troubleshooting would be very appreciated. Will probably be calling lenovo soon, but given that I altered the OS from preinstalled windows they may not be very helpful.

Very strange interface behavior
After installing SL on my early MBP I am seeing very strange behavior in some (but interestingly not all) dialogs.
Some drop-down selectors have a slight discoloration in the red-pink end of the spectrum. When I select the item it goes back to normal. The other issue is that certain selectors are flat (meaning that where I would expect a raised button it is flat).
Since I fear I'm not doing a particularly good job of explaining what I mean, I've uploaded screenshots to my MobileMe account. Is anyone else seeing this? Is this something that, perhaps, a clean install might resolve?
http://gallery.me.com/dreadgeek#100251
Cheers
AjOf course, I reinstalled SDK, cleared caches, preferences and so on.
Tech Guru, thank you for your replies, but it seems I posted my question in the wrong place. On the whole forum the only person payed attention to my issue is you Maybe you can advice me the right place? -
[Solved] Very strange problem with kernel-modules & NTFS write speed
I was getting very low copying speed when copying files to NTFS partitions, around 8-10 MB. But, when I commented the modules section in /etc/rc.conf file, the speed dramatically improved upto 5-6x. Now, it also created some problems for me. Like vboxdrv is required by Virtualbox to function & cpufreq_ondemand is required by my AMD processor. Please help me & tell what I'm doing wrong. Now, I'm getting good speed while copying data but the problem is that the processor is running & full speed i.e. 3.0 GHz. I checked it via cat /proc/cpuinfo. Also, there is a message in the bootime, that i'm posting here..

Very strange desktop behavior on brand new macbook pro
Macbook Pro
2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB ram
Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT 128MB
OSX 10.4.10
w/ all the latest apple updates.
i just received this laptop in the mail, and as i was adding come 'essential' programs, i started to notice an odd behavior:
using safari, i was downloading applications from version tracker. for instance, Textwranger.
for some reason, after the file downloads and unpacks, the temporary download file xxxx.dmg.download doesn't disappear until i place my mouse over it.
then, the file that is unpacked does not show up on my desktop unless i specifically search for it using spotlight.
i also have a file in the trash that wont delete when i empty it : UnRarX
i literally have only been using this computer for an hour or so.Yes, the finder prefs do have that option. While you are in Finder app, right under "Finder" in the menubar, go to Preferences (command comma) and under the General tab, check Hard disk "show these items on the Desktop".. and under the Sidebar tab, check hard disk in "show these items in the Sidebar".
If you are lacking normally displayed items or having problems with settings or system differences, do the "Reset PRAM" by restarting and holding the command, option, p and r keys until you hear the third chime. Do not release those keys until you have heard the THIRD chime ... it is important. -
Well I'd been running Windows 7 flawlessly apart from a few non-related motherboard problems, so I decided to install Vista.
Basically my main OS drive (sata) is always detected, but then occasionally (more often than not) my secondary sata drives will simply not be listed in device manager once the system is booted up. Now, I've seen this problem before, and it was sorted by right clicking 'my computer' going to 'manage' and setting the drives up to be detected. But this simply isn't the case here. They don't appear anywhere!
It sometimes sorts itself out once I click 'Scan for hardware changes' in device manager and they magically appear as if ive just plugged in a USB device, which is fine I guess...but each time it swaps the damn drive letters around! So having media library's in Winamp, etc or putting a shortcut toolbar to my music on the taskbar is all but pointless!
All of my hardware apart from Bluetooth has drivers installed for it, and nothing seems to be conflicting at all. Does anyone have any idea why this is
happening? because in all my years of computing I've never seen something as strange as this...
As far as I know I have the latest Intel INF drivers installed (9.0.0.1011)
This is the board: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148024I can't see how it'd be PSU because Win7 was just fine...but here it is...
PSU: OCZ XStream 600W PSU
100~240Vac 10-5A 50/60Hz
+3.3V(36A), +5V(30A), +12V1(18A), +12V2(18A), +12V3(18A), +12V4(18A)
Specs:
Dual Core E5200 2.5GHz
4GB Corsair RAM + 2GB OCZ RAM
nVidia GeForce 9600 GT
MSI P43 Neo-F
Not detected (at Vista startup) drives:
Hitachi HDP725050GLA360
ST3320620AS
(they show up perfectly fine in DOS, but I remember only the drive below appeared during Vista setup drive options...)
Detected Primary OS drive:
WDC WD800JD-00LUA0
My drives in BIOS are set to IDE mode (which has always been fine for me in the past). I set it to AHCI Mode to check if it boots but it just sticks on the same screen (flashing underscore). I'm sure it's driver related but I'm totally out of options now...you'd think installing the ones provided on the MSI site would get it working... :/
Another thing is under 'Storage Controllers' in device manager, there is only an IDE Controller. I'm sure there should be a SATA one there, too? -
VERY STRANGE Airplay Behavior (Ghosts???)
Hi all,
I have had an issue which for the life of me I cannot explain.
Every Sunday I have friends come over to watch NFL Game Pass. I have an iPad 3 and I Airplay the Football to my TV (through an ATV 2G). For the early games there is NEVER an issue. Then ALWAYS at about the same time during the 2nd games (give or take 20 minutes) the Airplay/AppleTV completely go nuts. The football cuts out and a strangely random song starts playing on the TV (via Apple TV).
Strange, becasue sometimes the song is not even in my iTunes collection. I will switch back to the the Football (via iPad) and within a few moments the football cuts out again and the random music plays.
This was driving me crazy becasue I am tech saavy and for the life of me could not figure it out.
So I started taking things out of the scenario to see if I could isolate the problem, to no avail (including making sure that iTunes Streaming was off and EVEN dumping my entire iTunes library.
Here is where it gets really wierd
When I got to my witts end, Ipowered down EVERY computer in the house.
Therefore, the ONLY things powered on were the iPad, Airplay, ATV2, the home network and the Samsung TV. NOTHING ELSE.
And yet the same problem occured - I'm clueless.
Apart from the why, I can't even figure out where the Apple TV is pulling the audio content from when it cuts from the Football.
Please help. The only explanation I can think of is that the administrators of this account make changes at the server that require you to change that setting accordingly. You should probably ask them.

[Solved] Chromium strange theming behavior
I noticed recently that Chromium seems to be having a problem correctly rendering its theme color. Namely, there appears to be a semi-transparent layer covering what should be the tab bar's black background. It doesn't affect the foreground tab, but seems to also cover any backgrounded tabs.
I took the liberty of editing the image to show how it is "supposed" to look. Here is a link to the theme's webpage:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta … khdh?hl=en
Does anyone know enough about Chromium to give me a hint at what could be causing this, it is theme independent (I tried a number of different themes, and consistently observed the same behavior). I'm not even sure where to start.
Oh, my WM is dwm and no error messages show up when started in a terminal.
Last edited by the sad clown (2011-10-06 13:06:52)After upgrading from 13 to 14 Chromium no longer displays this behavior.

Very strange iTunes behavior, please help!
Every once in a while, I will notice a song in my library that has a time listed that I know is shorter than the song's actual length (for example, a song I know to be 5 minutes+ will be listed in the library as 1:37). When I play the song, the time adjusts to the proper time, so that is not the problem. However, if I sync my iPod, iTunes will only sync the time listed (1:37 in the example) to the iPod! It seems to be 100% random in the songs it effects and time it changes it to. Please help me out!
Edit: I also forgot to mention, it will make songs longer also, but that is not as much of a problem because it will go on the iPod, show the "longer" time and then just go to the next track once the actual music is over

Very Strange Internet Access Behavior After upgrade to systemd
Currently I'm having very strange issues with my wireless connection. Currently, if I connect using netcfg to a wireless access point, I have the following behavior:
1. chromium can connect to any website
2. thunderbird can send/receive emails
3. curl, firefox and opera can connect to some https sites but not http (yes: https://www.facebook.com, https://bbs.archlinux.org, no: https://archlinux.org, https://github.com)
4. wget does not connect, neither does pacman -Syu
after I upgraded to systemd, I was getting errors because of groups, so I removed extra groups. Here's what I have now:
There is currently no rc.conf in /etc
$ id ambantis
uid=1000(ambantis) gid=100(users) groups=100(users)
$ id root
uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root),1(bin),2(daemon),3(sys),4(adm),19(log),1000(wheel)
If I try to remove the wheel group, then netcfg does not allow me to connect, neither can I connect manually with wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd
Here's the output of $ systemctrl

Very Strange- Mail changes all dates after two days
I have a very strange behavior:
Apple Mail changes the date-information of incoming and outgoing mails after about two days -
for the first two days it says "today" or "yesterday" after that it changes all dates to one single date (december 12.2009 and some to december 12.2010).
I just put in a new pram battery, so this cannot be the problem.
what the heck is this?Hi Noe, do you have anything in Rules that is set to happen after 2 days?
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist

Very strange FF3/Opera behavior
Hi there,
I'm running XFCE & Compiz Fusion and encountered a very strange behavior when visiting a certain website with Firefox3. The website is http://www.cyberpunk-terminal.de/. Whenever I visit that site my whole Firefox gets transparent. When I switch to a different tab or close the tab, it's back to normal. It seems to have something to do with Compiz, since I can set the transparency of FF to 0 via Compiz-shortcuts.
Does anybody else have the same experience?
Edit: Same thing happens with Opera.

Hey, i have very strange prob with my iphone 5(latest version/updated), after resetting it, so it doesn't connect to my laptop, even it doesn't charge too. it does charge from wall charger i try all the possible methods but still i am facing the prob any fix/solution for it.. Helppppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As soon as possible, it will be gratefulness,
Thnksssssss....So you are saying that you followed all of the steps in the support document for problems with connection, including removing and reinstalling iTunes? You do not say what you have tried, so it is hard to make recommendations. If this is the case, then you have tried resolving driver issues? What if you go to Device Manager and look for the iPhone. You should be able to click on it and see about drivers. You can update/reinstall the device driver.

VERY strange behavior - HELP!
I don't know if anyone can help, but I have had some VERY strange Powerbook this afternoon while doing some Word processing. I was doing a quick search on the internet, when web pages would not load and applications became EXTREMELY SLOW. It was almost as if I had lost my internet connection, but everything was fully connected and fine. Anything action that I took brought up the spinning pinwheel of death. After force quitting all of my apps. and trying to restart, I continued to get the spinning wheel. After leaving the PB for nearly five minutes, the wheel was still spinning and restart did not happen.
I finally held down the power button until it shut down. After restart, I repaired permissions and received the following, which I thought was strange:
Disk Utility started.
Repairing permissions for Macintosh HD
Determining correct file permissions.
parent directory ./Users/Shared/SC Info does not exist
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Library/Widgets. New permissions are 16877
Permissions differ on ./private/var/log/secure.log, should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r-----
Owner and group corrected on ./private/var/log/secure.log
Permissions corrected on ./private/var/log/secure.log
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./usr/lib/php/build/acinclude.m4. New permissions are 33060
I understand the "special permissions" is due to the latest security update, but the secure.log concerns me. Any ideas?
Here is part of the system log as well. Any help would be much appreciated. Based on the sys.log towards the bottom, it almost looks as if there was some kind of attempted security breech on the system?
Thanks,
Joe B

VERY strange lag on a Dell Optiplex 760
I thought it would be a good idea to keep a 16GB flash drive on my keychain that booted Arch so I could work on HW for college in a consistent OS! Everything is working great so far, but I ran into a very strange problem with a Dell Optiplex 760. During the normal Arch init process, everything loads great, except for when it gets to the udev stage where everything hangs. But here's the strange part of this scenario: the problems go away when I start typing random keys or move the mouse! If I don't do this, the system hangs completely from what I can tell. This happens at the console and with X.
The service tag for this machine is FDCQQJ1, and the dell.com driver area brings up this list of hardware and (windows) drivers for it.
Here's the #lspci -vv of the system:
