[SOLVED] Virtualbox and USB Support

I use Virtualbox quite regularly for work and school. I have Windows installed within Virtualbox, and I use it whenever school or work requires. However, USB support has never worked for me (even with the fstab addition) and I thought maybe I'll spend some time to figure this out.
Basically, I may want to do things like insert a flash drive and make it available to the VM, or even sometimes an MP3 player or even my PSP. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. There USB filters, but often times the device I want is greyed out, and can't be selected. When I am able to select a device to create a filter, it doesn't do anything. I did check the Wiki already.
Maybe I'm missing something? Or is USB support in Virtualbox just that bad? I was hoping there would be some sort of way I can dedicate a USB port to Virtualbox, and make it exclusive. I think VMWare can do that but I'm not sure that Virtualbox can.

I hope it's ok to post in this thread because if I started a new thread the title would be identical.  I am also using virtualbox_bin from AUR and while USB passthrough works just fine to my Windows XP guest, it can't be working any faster than USB v1.1 speed.  I have the appropriate entry in /etc/fstab and am a member of the virtualbox group.  No permissions problems and from what I can tell there's no corruption of data to/from any of my USB flash drives.  The only issue I've had other than the aforementioned lack of speed is with a 1TB Western Digital Passport.  It seemed to have "lost" some directories.  In other words they appeared completely empty on the XP side.  After shutting down the guest I verified that all of the files were indeed still there and intact.  I've basically chalked that one up to a deficiency in Windows XP.  But this speed issue is seriously holding me back.

  • [solved] VirtualBox and USB

Let me understand something - VirtualBox OSE does not support USB and the only VIrtualbox for Arch is the OSE version which even after installing virtualbox-ext-oracle does not support USB.
    WTF?

"If USB is not working on your Linux host, make sure that the current user is a member of the vboxusers group."
If I wasn't, I wouldn't be able to run the VM anyway, right? Anyway, the user is added.
"The rest of this section only applies to those older systems"
My OS is brand new Arch and my hardware is top-end C2D with new bios so I don't think that applies.

I'm not sure if any of the following updates could have done it but the auto change resolution feature in a Virtualbox Windows guest has suddenly stopped working... I tried reinstalling virtualbox and extensions and reinstalling the virtualbox drivers in windows but it doesn't work for some reason.  Any one else experience this lately?

No dice... I did all that and still doesn't work.  Do you think gnome3.2 has something to do with it?

I don't have problems with auto change resolution and my system is up to date, particularly xorg (not gnome, i don't use it).
However I don't use virtualbox-bin (I did, in the past), I don't think its needed anymore.
    I have installed:
    virtualbox 4.1.4-2
    virtualbox-additions 4.1.4-1
    virtualbox-ext-oracle 4.1.4-1 (from aur)
and then installed the guest additions, which should be enough.

  • [SOLVED] VirtualBox 4 & USB Host

I'm moving from Virtualbox 3.x (binary PUEL edition with USB from AUR) to 4.x. My 3.x was fully working including USB host.
I've uninstalled Vbox 3.x and installed the following packages:
    - virtualbox 4.0.0-2
    - virtualbox-additions 4.0.0-1
    - virtualbox-ext-oracle 4.0.0-2
Extension pack shows up in Virtualbox extension manager (USB host). I've also installed guest additions and enabled USB host under VM's configuration. However I'm unable to select any of my USB devices (everything is grayed out). Is there any additional step to go through in order to get access to USB devices.
    Thanks
    Alphazo
PS: From my previous working 3.x installation I also have my user belonging to the vboxusers group and vboxdrv module loaded by rc.conf.

According to the wiki it is no longer required to mount usbfs by modifying /etc/fstab (although you need HAL to be running).. Again I had USB host working fine with VirtualBox 3 PUEL edition. I since moved to VirtualBox 4 (GPL) + extension pack for USB (PUEL) but can't get USB to work. I'm not sure the package virtualbox-sun can solve my problem.

  • [SOLVED] Virtualbox list usb devices is empty.

I moved from virtualbox_bin(AUR) to virtualbox(community), and remove /proc/bus/usb entry in /etc/fstab, after that the usb doesn't work.   I can check 'Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller' in Virtualbox settings, but can't find any available usb devices.

Have rebooted and reinstalled virtualbox multiple times to no avail.
It is important to note that my iPhone used to sync with iTunes on Windows 7 in Virtualbox, but then I removed the USB filter and did some updates and now it no longer works.
I have spent many more hours than I care to admit on this problem, so please, any help is welcome.

  • [Solved] vfat and iso9660 support?

I'm not sure whether this is a newbie question, or not!  Earlier this year I moved from Ubuntu to Arch.
I find that I am unable to mount vfat and iso9660 volumes
    Error mounting /dev/sr1 at /run/media/root/SELPHYCP910: Command-line `mount -t "iso9660" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=0,gid=0,iocharset=utf8,mode=0400,dmode=0500" "/dev/sr1" "/run/media/root/SELPHYCP910"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: unknown filesystem type 'iso9660'
    (udisks-error-quark, 0)
Now, I might not have mounted a CD since I installed Arch, but I'm pretty certain that I have used SD cards.  What has happened to my system?  Have I omitted to install something critical?
Should there be mount.iso9660 and mount.vfat files in usr/bin?

Okay, thanks - I have to watch pacman, then, to see whether a kernel update is applied.  Oh, and my machine gets rebooted, on average, a couple of times a day - the frequency with which we experience power cuts.
Edit: (Please mark as solved then.)
    Done.

  • MOVED: 975x platinum board and usb microphones

This topic has been moved to Off-Topic Technical.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=117837.0

    First two are easy.
#1.  There is a mistake in the official bios that shuts off usb support.  Flash to one of the modded bios you will see in this index if you want X2 cpu support and usb support. There are numerous current threads about this.  I suggest flashing with winflash like this:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=84865.msg606175#msg606175
    with something fromthis:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=59711.0
#2.  That message is harmless and everybody gets it above ver. 1.8.
#3, 4 & 5.  After you flash correctly (checking the clear cmos box in winflash, etc.), let's see what problems remain, but it would help if you gave us your full system specs for your psu with brand and amps on 3.3, 5 AND 12 volt rail(s) etc.

  • DSL-2750B and USB Printer Support

I just got a DSL-2750B modem/router. In the specs on this page it says it supports a USB Printer:
    https://teleproducts.verizon.com/fileshare/plm/brochure/DL2750BVOL_brochure.pdf
On the D-Link Site the manual for this router shows screens to configure it. but those screens don't match the screens I get when I log in to the router. The ones on the router are all branded with Verizon.
If I open the Verizondrive icon showing up in my network I see a folder for Drives and one for Printers.  I have tested a USB drive in the USB port on the router, but can't configre a USB printer.
I have talked/chatted with the DSL support folks and they can't help. They told me I had to go to premium support and pay for the call.  That doesn't seem right that I have to pay for information on how to configure a device you sold me for a feature that your web site says the device has.
Please tell me how to configure a usb printer for this DSL-2750B

I have spent a couple of hours looking for the same information without success. I agree: this seems to me to be basic iinstruction, and Verizon support should provide it without charge .Is anyone at Verizon support listening? Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Solaris 10 Oracle VDI VirtualBox 3.2 USB support

    Dear folks,
This my first time to the forum, since we are in the progress of deploying 240+ thin clients using Oracle VDI. I was piloting the project in a desktop machines with Sunray 3i. I installed Solaris 10 9/10 and Oracle VDI 3.2.1. However, while I was creating WinXP VM in Virtualbox 3.2 -the one which came with Oracle VDI 3.2- I got that error about being unable to connect to USB proxy server. Eventually this error leads to that all my VMs doesn't support USB redirection. So USB flash disk drive doesn't work in my Sunray 3i. Reading VirtualBox documentation Installing on Solaris hosts , I came across this info "*This does not apply to Solaris 10 hosts due to lack of USB support.*" Is this real?
Does this mean I can't redirect USB hardware to my VMs in the server via Sunray 3i? If this is true, what is the workaround for this problem?
    Please advise me. . .

Other than the documentation stating it doesn't work, in practice have you tested it to not work also?
We have two Solaris 10u5 machines running Vbox 3.2.12 and they pass through USB fine with our Sun Ray 3's (not 3i's but that shouldn't matter).
Did you enable USB passthrough in the VDI core by selecting the desktop pool and going to the Settings -> Sun Ray RDP Settings? Theres checkboxes to enable USB/smartcard pass through.

  • Powerbook 2400 and USB Card Support

I have a Powerbook 2400 with a PCMCIA slot. I also have a Belkin USB Adapter for the slot that works fine with a Powerbook G3. I also must run Mac OS 8.6 because of an old program I use everyday. The 2400 slot works with a modem card so I know it is not defective.
I downloaded Apple's USB Card Support 1.4.1, which allows the USB card support in pre 9.0 Macs. The notes say it will work with any PowerPC Mac. When I try to install it on the 2400, the window comes up saying this card suppot software is not supported on this machine. It works fine on the G3 running 8.6.
Is there any work around so that I can use this card in the 2400?
    Thanks,
    cjpmac

The dialogue box "...USB DDK..." went away with your instructions for including "usbx", BUT the 2400 froze on restart.
I removed the "usbx" version of the USB Support Extension and went back to the USB Support Extension without "usbx". I restarted and it came up without the dialogue box. (?????). No freezing. So the dialogue box problem was solved.
With the old (non "usbx" support extension) installed, I inserted my Belkin USB card. I then inserted the little Memorex USB in the left slot of the two slot card spaces and it didn't work. I inserted it into the right slot and the little light on the Memorex flashed and the icon came upon the desktop. Hurray!!!
    Success!
I am a bit confused by all of this.
    1. With Plan B, it took code inserted into the resource window, "usbx" (pardon me if I use the wrong terms here) to get rid of the dialogue box (DDK) which came up on all restarts.
    2. That froze the 2400.
    3. Replacing it with the original USB Support Extension (without "usbx") allowed the 2400 to restart without freezing or the dialogue box.
    4. BUT my hardware Belkin card seems to mount USB drives on the right USB slot only.
Anyway it seems to be working, and you guys are phenomenal. My PC using husband is totally impressed by what you have been able to help me do. And I am reminded of how much fun it used to be to do this kind of stuff on my old Macs when we could still work with the extension folder.
Do you have any further analysis on this, otherwise I'll close it out as question answered? Bless you!

  • Sunray Server and DTUs USB Support

I'm looking for help on usb support through the Sunray DTUs. I would like to be able to connect a usb device as I would with inside of Windows from a Sunray. USB drives are about the only thing I have working but not consistently. I've used the USB drive daemon posted on the Thinkthin blog and that works most of the time. I would like to use printers connected directly to the DTU. I have an idea on how to add the printer using the tmp/SUWut/units/<macaddress>/dev path but it seems that I cannot get it to work; maybe I'm using the wrong settings/drivers. I would also like to use USB cdroms, floppys, etc. Basically anything that doesn't require a special driver in Windows I would like to use on a DTU. It makes it hard to convince people that these can replace desktops when the functionality of things like USB are nowhere nearly as developed as Windows desktops. BTW, I need it both on the Solaris side and through the Sunray Windows connector. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure about sunray connector (windows) but within solaris it is rather transparent as long as the usb drive device is not NTFS. Plug it in and it should show up in /tmp/SUNWut/mnt/user/. I use a dvdwriter (lightscribe) the same way.
Whenever I have problems with users not being able to mount thumb drives it is always a NTFS issue or a high density thumb drive (8-16gb).
Not sure why sun doesn't put something more apparent on the desktop when you mount a drive. The rest of the world does that and it would make it a bit more user friendly. If you want a pain in the rear try using virtualbox through a sunray and mount usb devices. It works but it is really convoluted.
    Never bothered with printers.

  • [SOLVED] VirtualBox complaining after each kernel upgrade

I'm using virtualbox-bin from the AUR (the one with USB support) and after each kernel update this error comes up:
    I know it's actually /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup
(apparently VirtualBox isn't aware of which distribution it's running on)
This message comes up every once in a while (usually after a kernel upgrade) and I was wondering if I can do something about it... Should I install the DKMS package from the AUR prior to running the above command? Maybe that will shut it up once and for all.
    What do you think?
PS: The wiki says to run "vboxbuild" but /usr/bin/vboxbuild doesn't even exist.
Last edited by DSpider (2012-05-15 15:39:13)

Solved it a year later because I got tired of running "sudo /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup && sudo modprobe vboxdrv" after every kernel update. Hmph... After reading this and studying the virtualbox-hook package from the AUR, I decided that it's finally time to look into it.
    It's easy.
    1. Create a "/lib/initcpio/install/vbox" file (or whatever you wanna call it) with the following contents:
    # vim: set ft=sh:
    build ()
    echo "Building VirtualBox modules..."
    /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup
    echo "Ok."
    help ()
    cat<<HELPEOF
This hook rebuilds VirtualBox modules. It does nothing to the initrd image.
    HELPEOF
    2. Add it to the "HOOKS" section from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata usbinput filesystems vbox"
Now the next time the linux and linux-headers packages are updated, the script will kick in and the modules will be rebuilt. I used to have it during boot process and it took forever until it would load X. Haha. I remember I used to go to bathroom just after I turned on the computer... Yeah, it took that long before it was done. Anyway, I asked the author if he can perhaps create a virtualbox-bin-hook package or somehow modify it to also work with virtualbox-bin. We shall see.
Oh, and don't forget to add "vboxdrv" to the "MODULES" section from /etc/rc.conf, if you haven't done so already.

  • Stuck on Itunes and Usb Logo after Restoring?

So i updated my iPhone from 6.1.3 to 6.1.6 and did not back it up. After the update, i restore it (Deleting all the files and datas).
And then after the restore, the iPhone is rebooting, then it is again in the Itunes and Usb logo asking me to restore it over again.
I have restore it 2 times, and it is annoying! What to do now? How can i bypass this after restoring the Phone?

Thanks for reply, but the problem still not solved. On iTunes > Devices (iPhone), the message "The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported"
