[SOLVED] Wacom and a 3.5.3 kernel

Hello, this is my first thread to kindly say hello and ofcourse to ask my 1st question.
Before i make a lot of effort and configure an Arch Linux (kernel 3.5.3) with an openbox
GUI i would like to know if following things will work for me:
CRUCIAL:
- wacom tablet CTH-470 (bamboo pen & touch)
- Openbox
- Texlive
- EclipseCDT
NOT SO CRUCIAL:
- Kile
- Okular
- Docky
- Record my desktop
- Bluefish
- Blender
I would appreciate if someone had any experience with above listed if you can confirm it
works. TY in advance!

Welcome to Arch -- I assume you have not used Arch before?
You might want to read a little about Arch: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Linux
And "The Arch Way": https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The_Arch_Way
Specifically the part about how Arch is "user centric" and not necessarily "user friendly":
Arch Linux targets and accommodates competent GNU/Linux users by giving them complete control and responsibility over the system.
Arch Linux users fully manage the system on their own. The system itself will offer little assistance, except for a simple set of maintenance tools that are designed to perfectly relay the user's commands to the system. Arch developers do not expend energy re-inventing GUI system tools; Arch is founded upon sensible design and excellent documentation.
Arch will be what you make it. Consult the wiki:
wacom tablet: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wacom_Tablet
openbox: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Openbox
texlive: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Texlive
eclipse: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Eclipse
Do you see the pattern here? Read the wiki. Inform yourself. Make your own decisions. Arch is a "help yourself" distro.

    Have you tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IBus#Initial_setup
If IBus doesn't work in Qt/KDE applications, ensure that the ibus-qt library is installed and define IBus as the default IME in the Qt configuration editor:
    $ qtconfig-qt4
In Interface > Default Input Method, select ibus instead of xim.
sadly, yes i have tried it i tried everything from the wiki and i tried everything from those links i sent.
it works sort of, it works in the qt-config application but i doesn't work in things like skype which is where it counts.
and after spending hours on google there are only like 4 threads about this problem because it seems to work for everyone but me
i've also updated my system and tried a few different kernels but i have the same thing happens.

  • White screen with file icon and Question mark after a kernel panic???

I'm using my girlfriends 20" iMac and her computer keeps having kernel panics. And then at times when we restart the computer, we get a white screen with a file icon and a question mark inside. Any ideas on what to do???? Her graduation project is on that computer and she is stressed like you wouldn't believe. Safe to say, I'm taking the brunt of it. Please help!!!

It sounds like you might be having a hard drive problem. The folder icon with question mark means the computer can't find a startup drive/system folder. I suggest that you back up all important data, especially her project. Before bringing it in for service, run the Apple Hardware Test - put in your original system restore DVD and restart the computer, holdng down the "D" key. Run the extended diagnositics (it will take over an hour (depending on how much RAM you have) and will tell you if there is anything wrong with your hardware. If it dinds a problem then you can take it to the nearest Apple authorized service provider to check it out.

I would like to get data analysis for solving statistic and making graphs, but this function is not in add-in. How should I do? I also set up microsoft office for mac 2011.

Microsoft didn't include that with the 2011 version.
There is a third-party application that substitutes for the add-in: http://www.analystsoft.com/en/products/statplusmac/
They also have a limited, free version.

  • [solved]wacom doesn't work after upgrade to xorg 1.6 and kernel 2.6.29

    hello..
i have already posted about that in testing-forums, but since xorg 1.6 and kernel 2.6.29 have moved to extra, though i'd create a seperate topic about that.
after i have upgraded to xorg 1.6 and kernel 2.6.29 my wacom device (as built-in, not usb) on my thinkpad x41t stopped working.
before upgrade i have used xorg with hotplugging enabled. everything worked fine.
after wacom stopeed working i removed everything regarding input devices from xorg.conf -> no change
put an fdi-file for wacom -> no change
    installed linuxwacom-dev -> no change
i don't really know, if it's a kernel or an xorg issue. loading wacom drivers manually still doesn't solve the problem. no warnings or errors about wacom in xorg-log or messages.log
how could i check, wether my system recognizes the device properly at all? it doesn't show up in lspci or in lsusb.
    any help would be great.

well, upgraded again to xorg-server 1.6, disabled hotplugging, installed linuxwacom-dev from aur and the wacom works as allways. (had to edit xmodmap one more time, since kbd returns other keycodes than evdev does :-| ). no matter, done is done.
but intel driver returns broken graphics if i rotate screen with xrandr.
i guess there is no way around this execpt switching to the ultra-slow legacy driver?
just for comparison - glxgears fps:
    intel: ~900fps
    intel-legacy: ~280fps

  • [solved] fastboot and rootdelay kernel option

    hi to all,
i was reading about improving boot time in our archwiki. it says to append in /boot/grub/menu.lst two ''magic'' words:
    fastboot
    and
    rootdelay=N
where N are seconds to wait before mount the root.
then i modify my .lst and perform a boot timing BUT results are exactly the same , the same time with or without these kernel option.....
    my menu.lst:
    # (0) Arch Linux NORMAL
    title Arch Linux
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda4 ro fastboot rootdelay=1 vga=773
    initrd /kernel26.img
    # (3) Arch Linux BOOTCHART
    title Arch Linux Bootchart
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda4 ro fastboot rootdelay=1 vga=773 init=/sbin/bootchartd
    initrd /kernel26.img
    # (1) Arch Linux FALLBACK
    title Arch Linux Fallback
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/87011ee4-6d50-4384-a305-0a23d3f27588 ro
    initrd /kernel26-fallback.img

    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /sysrcd/rescue64 subdir=sysrcd setkmap=it
    initrd /sysrcd/initram.igz
    where i make a mistake ?
    thks

Kernel command line parameters aren't inherently magical. fastboot was introduced in 2.6.29 and attempts to decrease boot time by performing some functions asynchronously. It may not result in anything speeding up. It may break things. It's probably not worth using.
Regarding rootdelay: The Wiki comes to a flawed conclusion that a shorter rootdelay will decrease boot time. rootdelay defines the maximum number of seconds the kernel is willing to wait for the root device to be mounted. It doesn't define an absolute time frame. rootdelay=100 will very likely yield the same results as rootdelay=10 because the boot process continues as soon as the root device is available. The wiki does correctly point out that a lower rootdelay can actually break the boot process.
To answer your question: your mistake is playing with parameters that you don't understand.

  • [Solved] Panic on Dell XPS M1530 with kernels 2.6.23-2.6.24 and -ice

Hello everyone, I've been scratching my head over this problem for three days now.
I got a new Dell XPS M1530 and I tried to install Arch64 2007.8 and 2007.11 at least a dozen times with different menu.lst and mkinitcpio configurations, as well as with the -ice kernel, and the problem remains the same: I finish the installation and reboot, and after initramfs finishes and kinit takes over, I get some mumbo jumbo about ReiserFS being successfully recognized and mounted read-only on sda5 (my /) and some ok stuff about journaling and blocks and then on the next line
sh: root=/dev/sda5 Cannot find file or directory
    Kernel panic - not syncing
    This is my partitions setup:
    sda1 - boot ext2
    sda5 - / reiser
    sda6 - home reiser
    sda7 - swap
In the last year I installed Arch on at least half a dozen boxes and I converted all of my Gentoo using friends to Arch and never had a problem like this one!
Please someone give me a good idea.
EDIT: I tried even with persistent naming by-uuid and it doesn't work.
More on this problem on flyspray 9795.

There are unhandled dependencies in core/base, so remember kids, it's always a good idea to install all the packages from base.;)

  • [SOLVED] r5u870 and Kernel 2.6.27

Apparently these don't mesh well - there are a -lot- of compiler complaints when installing r5u870 from pacman, or from the sources at http://wiki.mediati.org/R5u870. The closest I could get to getting this damn thing working (I have the 05ca:1836 Ricoh motioneye webcam in my laptop) was by following the wiki page:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Web … 28Ricoh.29
Basically this said to install r5u87x-hg from aur. After eventually figuring out I needed the mercurial package for that to work, I get some errors. The building seems to work fine but since I don't know what they mean, I include them here:
    pulling from http://bitbucket.org/ahixon//r5u87x
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/mercurial/demandimport.py:46: DeprecationWarning: the sha module is deprecated; use the hashlib module instead
    mod = _origimport(head, globals, locals)
    real URL is http://bitbucket.org/ahixon/r5u87x/
    searching for changes
    no changes found
    rm -fr *.o loader
    rm -fr *.gch loader
    rm *~
rm: cannot remove `*~': No such file or directory
    make: *** [clean] Error 1

    cc -g -Wall -march=x86-64 -mtune=generic -O2 -pipe -o loader loader.o `pkg-config --libs glib-2.0 libusb`
After this, the package appears to install successfully, and I am told I need to run "loader". This, run as a regular user or as root, returns:
    Searching for device...
    Found camera : 05ca:1836
    Firmware : ucode/r5u87x-05ca-1836.fw
Error: Failed to open ucode/r5u87x-05ca-1836.fw. Does it exist?
I had a quick look for that file, and it appears to exist as /lib/firmware/r5u87x-05ca-1836.fw. I tried linking /lib/ucode to /lib/firmware but no go.
I'd really like to get this webcam working. Does anyone have any insight?
    Thanks!

    So, a little bit closer...
    loader -f /lib/firmware/r5u87x-05ca-1836.fw returns:
    Searching for device...
    Found camera : 05ca:1836
    Firmware : /lib/firmware/r5u87x-05ca-1836.fw
    Camera reports positive microcode state.
    Camera reports microcode version 0x0115.
Not doing anything - camera already setup.
Successfully uploaded firmware to device 05ca:1836!
(I'm not sure if it said the whole "camera already setup" the first time, I've run it twice now and don't have the original output). Anyway, it looks like it's working fine but as far as I can tell I still can't use my webcam (ekiga doesn't find it).
UPDATE: the wiki page referred to above suggests testing the webcam with the command:
    vlc v4l:// :v4l-vdev="/dev/video0" :v4l-adev="/dev/audio2"
I don't have a /dev/video0, or any other /dev/video for that matter... what have I done wrong?

  • [SOLVED] mkinitcpio and kernel upgrades without SyncFirst option?

As pacman 4.1 doesn't more provide SyncFirst option how to be sure mkinitcpio will run after linux-headers installation?
    for example, in case of
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vi … any_kernel
    previously, i had
    SyncFirst = pacman linux-headers linux-lts-headers linux-pf-headers

I hat to uninstall yaourt, yail and package-query simply by:
    sudo pacman -Rcs yaourt
    then run commands:
    sudo pacman -Sy
    sudo pacman -S linux-headers
    sudo pacman -S pacman
    sudo pacman -S yaourt
    modify ~/.bashrc with this line
    alias yaourt='sudo /usr/bin/pacman -Sy linux-headers pacman --needed 2>/dev/null && yaourt'
2>/dev/null suppresses warnings about the skipped reinstalls of linux-headers and pacman
Now use yaourt -Su instead of formerly yaourt -Syu
    yaourt -Su

  • [SOLVED] nvidia and xorg-server, slow start compared to nv

I've seen many similar topics but none that have been solved, therefore the new topic.
Starting xorg with nv driver takes just a few seconds to desktop, while using nvidia takes almost 10 seconds more to get to desktop. Although after reaching desktop everything works fine. I've used a minimal xorg.conf for each driver (replacing nvidia with nv):

From what I can tell it is something with the nvidia driver that doesn't play well with xorg.  Perhaps some kind of autodetection that takes long time to finish. Anyone got any ideas how to solve this?

Didn't see they where timestamps . Yes it seems that glx is one cause of the delay. I've tried some different xorg.conf, and it's always ligglx.so or  NV-GLX that slows it down. Any suggestions on how I can speed this up?
ps. The computer is ok. Although the garddrive is a SATA 3.0Gb/s, 5400 RPM.  But I don't think this is the problem?
