[SOLVED] Watermark Desktop

Hello,
Is there a package which watermarks the desktop with useful information such as your username/IP etc?  I believe "WaterMark" does this but I can't get it to work.
Thanks.

touch creates a file if it doesn't exist. Anyway, I don't believe Conky comes with a default config. Its man page describes everything it does though; just read down the list and add the things you want to see.

  • [Solved] KDE Desktop Effects no longer working

    Hello,
I just did an update, (I didn't think it was a major one, I don't recall seeing graphics update, though I'm not sure how to confirm - is there a way to see recently updated packages in yaourt?) and after a brief issue with powertop that was solved by a restart (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=179789 - it may be unrelated though) I found that when I restarted, KWin Crashed, and since then, my desktop effects are not working.
I have gone to the KDE Desktop Effects Settings Menu, and under the advanced menu, set the compositing type back to OpenGL 3.1, clicked apply, and confirmed that I wanted to try it even though it had evidently crashed Kwin. I then received a message stating "21 desktop effects could not be loaded". When I clicked details, a popup window said:
"For technical reasons it is not possible to determine all possible error causes.
Desktop effect system is not running."
For the record, I am on a Thinkpad X201 with intel graphics.
    Any ideas?

    Some Extra information:
I just tried a restart, that didn't work.
I then went back into effect settings, and saw that "enable effects at startup" was not checked. I also saw that under the advanced settings, Qt Graphics system was set to raster. Since I'm not sure which it was supposed to be on originally, but the current configuration wasn't working, I also set that to Native, and then clicked apply. KWin then crashed, here is the output:
    Application: KWin (kwin), signal: Aborted
    Using host libthread_db library "/usr/lib/libthread_db.so.1".
To enable execution of this file add
    add-auto-load-safe-path /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.19-gdb.py
line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
To completely disable this security protection add
    set auto-load safe-path /
line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
For more information about this security protection see the
"Auto-loading safe path" section in the GDB manual. E.g., run from the shell:

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I found this on another site:
1.) Start the Desktop Manager software
2.) Connect the blackberry using USB Connector
    3.) Select "back-up and restore"
    4.) Select "advanced"
5.) Look at the list of information showing in the "device memory" window on your computer
6.) Select "calender all" and DELETE it
7.) Go back to the main screen and syncronize.
    8.) Everything should work fine!
In essence it was a corrupt calendar data file on the Blackberry device, apparently.

  • [SOLVED] Plasma Desktop segfaults after recent KDE update to ver. 4.6

Today after upgrading some amount of packages, including the new KDE 4.6, my Plasma Desktop "segfaults" every single time I login into my account. I tried to send some information regarding this issue using KDE's internal reporting system, but unfortunately it tells me, that those information are irrelevant. Does anyone experience "segfaulting" of the Plasma Desktop after recent KDE upgrade? I'm looking for some help on how to solve this issue, as for the moment my Arch is dead...

Actually, it is KDE that is giving you trouble, not the OS . When you reach the kdm login screen, don't login. Instead, switch to a tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1, for example) and login from there. Then, you can see a list with all your plasmoids with
    plasmapkg -l
If you find the culprit plasmoid, and it is a plasmoid downloaded outside Arch's repos (from kde-look.org, for example), remove it with
    plasmapkg -r plasmoid_name
If the plasmoid is installed as a package, it is probably better to uninstall/upgrade it using pacman.
panosk wrote:do you use some extra plasmoid? if so, you need to rebuild them.
    Hi all,
I have the same problem. I tried using tty, but I got  "cannot access to X server". Than I tried
Alt+F2 to run Terminal, I used
    plasmapkg -l
in order to see the list of all the plasmoids, but I couldn't find the "culprit" plasmoid. I don't know if I am doing it right. Here the list of my plasmapkg:
    [encho@x~]$ plasmapkg -l
plasmapkg(1986)/libplasma Plasma::PackageStructurePrivate::createPackageMetadata: No metadata file in the package, expected it at: "/home/encho//metadata.desktop"

im using openbox and i added my .fehbg to my autostart file in the openbox folder. i had the problem, that some other instance is changing the bnackground after the autostart file, so my preferred picture only stayed for 1 second. for now i solved this by adding a sleep function, so that the execution of ~/.fehbg is after the influence of the other instance. but id like to solve this in a wy, that doesnt make my desktop background jump around at the startup!

  • [SOLVED] XFCE Desktop unaglined

    Hello,
I installed arch a few days ago, and I encountered a problem with XFCE. When I log on to tty1, and do startxfce4. Everything is normal except the desktop is shifted upward and leftward. At the bottom, I can see the shell with "Initializing built-in extension XFree-DGA" and "Initializing built-in extension XFree-DRI" and "Initializing built-in extension DRI2" and "Loading extension GLX".
When I move my mouse to the left past the end. It comes back on the right, but can only go about an inch before it cannot move anymore. When I move my mouse to the right again, it goes to the left.
When I move a window all the way to the left, part of it shows up on the right.
I can provide a screenshot, however it displays the screen as if it were perfectly fine.
Please help, if there is any file I can provide please tell me.
    EDIT:
I have Optimus, one HD4600 and a GT755M. People on other forums have told me to use Bumblebee, but I've had bad experiences with it so I want to stay away from it as much as possible. If it is nessecary, I can try it though. I am using the generic video driver. (mesa or vesa, whichever it is) I also have installed X. There are no error messages when I do startxfce4.

  • [Solved] XFCE Desktop update...

    Hello all agian.
I am using conky in XFCE and play my music collections with mpd now. In conky I added mpd status including song name and so on.
My problem is, when I play a song it shows the artist/title on the screen. If a song's title is shorter then the previous song conky update that text but on the desktop there's still text left from the old song.
    For example:
    Song 1:
MPD: [1.28/3.24] Artist - A very long song title for this song
    Song 2
MPD: [0.08/2.12] Artist 2 - A short title ong title for this song
The part in italics is NOT removed as I switch song.
Can I make either conky or xfwm to update the desktop when I switch song?
(EDIT: I've read some about the FAM daemon that is used by several desktop env. Can it be the one I miss as desktop is not updating? Do XFCE make use of it?)
(EDIT 2: I searched and found http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=31737, tried it, but nono, not updating, fam is running and so on..)
(EDIT 3: Case closed. Installing FAM, get that daemon running, restart of xfce solved it it seems, Mental note #2345: Check ALL possible solutions before spamming a forum..)

[disclaimer] I do not use Xfce, but I know several people who do and have reported similar problems [/disclaimer]
Can you log in at another console (ctrl-alt-f2)? If you can, try deleting these two folders entirely:
    ~/.cache/sessions/
    ~/.config/xfce4/
and then reboot. If that does not help, try reinstalling Xfce.
There is more information in the wiki here.

  • [FIXED BUT NOT SOLVED] NVIDIA - Desktop shifted left off the screen...

    Hello Community!
For a pretty long time right now, I am trying to fix the video setup of my HTPC but without success. Because I'am run out of ideas, I really need Your help.
    PROBLEM:
The desktop is shifted left off the screen, round about 100 Pixel.
It started some time in the past, while upgrading a one year old Ubuntu installation (NVDIA drivers). Because I couldn't fix it and also wanted to replace Ubuntu with ArchLinux, I performed a clean ArchLinux installation.
First I used the nouveau drivers ending up with the same problem. I read an configured using xrandr and cvt, but with no success.
So I restored the system to a snapshot taken before X11 and nouveau drivers installations, thank's BTRFS, and installed the proprietary NVIDIA drivers ending up with the same problems. Again I tried all the tips and tricks found in the documentations and forums, used nvidia-xconfig, hand crafted the xorg.conf all with no success.
    HARDWARE
The system is a MSI Media Live (http://www.msi.com/product/desktop/Media-Live.html)
. Support AMDR Athlon 64 X2, Athlon 64 and Sempron in the Socket AM2 package
    . North Bridge: nVidia® C51PVG Chipset
    . South Bridge: nVidia® MCP51 Chipset
. Graphics is Integrated NVIDIA GPU GeForce 6150 LE
. VGA, SCART and HDMI - Connectors
The display Problem is on VGA and HDMI now, where in the past the VGA was perfect. Therefor I connected and used the VGA port only, in all tests.

As You can see, I installed only a minimal X11 environment for test. The lxdm display manger shows up but with very small font and shifted to the left. Only if I force a resolution of 1024x768 the image is centered on screen/tv but still the very small font. Obviously not a solution for a HTPC.
Here are the xorg.conf and the Xorg.0.log of my last test configuration.

    Thank You Mr.Elendig!
The simplest answer often is best. After I connected a TFT display, instead of my TV, I was able to calibrate the screen output and got the desktop shifted. Knowing that, I tried the settings of my TV again. There is a hard to find option for calibration wich is set to automatic but doesn't do it. Trying to turn it of did the trick. Even the option stays on automatic and even the display format is fixed to 4:3 instead of 16:9, finaly the TV adjusted the display correctly.
None the less, the problem not to be able to shift the desktop using the screen paramters in xorg.conf remains.
    Thanks

sorry i forgot to give the solution
i removed/moved the "~/.kde4" directory and every thing returned as usual and if you have some themes/dolphin plugins/ksplash themes ... you can make backup and copy theme to the new "~/.kde4" directory

You are right, it was nemo, who want to govern the desktop
    I used
    gsettings set org.nemo.desktop show-desktop-icons false

  • [SOLVED] Cinnamon Desktop Selection

Hi, I'm running Archlinux with the cinnamon desktop, does anyone know how to achieve the desktop dragging? (Dragging a selection box on the desktop)
I know it's possible as I've seen Manjaro do it, and Manjaro is based off of Archlinux. I'm going to assume it is a package, or maybe a config file. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you, I have used openbox for about four years now, so I never played with gnome that much, but the recent xorg update broke openbox's logout, so I switched to cinnamon. Overall happy with it, now that I have control over my desktop. Thanks again!

I also can't seem to shutdown from within the menu.
Any help would be great, thanks.
