[solved] What happened to gnome-keyring-manager?

I've asked this in several places, in desparation I will try this forum.
So what happened to gnome-keyring-manager? There used to be a nice UI to manage keyrings, but I can't find it anymore? Has it been removed from Gnome? Or from the Arch distribution of Gnome? Or is it in a separate package?

It was replaced by Gnome with Seahorse.

  • "The GNOME keyring manager hijacked the GnuPG agent"

I've run gpg from the command line and suddenly a dialog box appeared asking for my password: it even asked if I wanted to remember it.
Meanwhile, in my bash terminal gpg had this to say:
gpg: WARNING: The GNOME keyring manager hijacked the GnuPG agent.
gpg: WARNING: GnuPG will not work proberly - please configure that tool to not interfere with the GnuPG system!
Googling didn't help much, seems to be a new "feature"...
Any idea how can I configure the keyring manager to stay away when I'm working in bash?

I had similar situation and decided to disable gnome-keyring's ssh and gpg agents. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GN … ing_daemon
The reason is that gnome keyring is active only when you have a GUI session active, thus it does not work for headless machines or when one SSH to the machine. It is just easier for me to use "default" agents.
PS The ssh-agent and gpg-agent is a mess from usability/configuration point of view (without those ugly environment variables). I wish there was a systemd friendly implementation of these agents.
PPS The latest gnupg use "use-standard-socket' config option by default, it means one does not need to start gpg-agent  and configure GPG_AGENT_INFO envvar manually. gpg will start agent for you transparently.

  • SSH & Gnome Keyring Manager

    Hi,
Ive just set up ssh with public key crypto, and whenever i try to ssh into a server, gnome keyring manager has taken the liberty of auto managing my private key and pops up a prompt for the passphrase.
How can i turn this off and stick to using the terminal for the passphrase?
    Thanks,
    Jack

You should have a look at the environment variable SSH_ASKPASS in your shell. It seems that this determines, which program is called. How about just uninstall the graphical interface? Check if one of the following packages is installed:
    pacman -Ss askpass

  • [solved] What happens if you quit a busy pacman

This might be a silly question but I cannot find an answer anywhere,
What happens if I ctl-c while pacman is removing or installing packages?
Will I be left with a half installed package?
for example, I was removing the 'gnome' group the other day and cancelled the process midway through the removal, pacman then later did not think that 'gnome' was installed, so I had to re-install gnome to remove everything again, if that makes sense?
Last edited by jrussell (2013-05-12 18:37:06)

It makes sense that you thought that you had to re-install gnome to remove it, because you do not seem to know about the group search options for -Q (man page), as well as you need to be told, that you can put a pacman command in a pacman command ("pacman -Xy $(pacman -Nm)") to let pacman tell pacman what to do.
You might but you should not end up with a half installed package. It seems like C-c is a rather friendly request by the shell, asking the process politely to stop whatever it is doing, as soon as it is done with critical things. (Look up "signals" in Unix). If pacman is a well-made piece of software, it should not leave half its dirt behind.
In your case you were only removing a group. There is no reference to installed groups (or at least not as far as I know), there are only packages in that group. I guess the dependencies of those packages were not in that group, so those were left installed upon interrupting pacman so impolitely.

  • [SOLVED]What happens with Alacarte?

Hi, my question is: What happens with Alacarte? exist other menu editor for gnome?
From AUR the package doesn't work at all...

What happens with Alacarte? exist other menu editor for gnome?
I think you are asking if Alacarte disables the menu editor that comes with Gnome. If that is indeed your question, my experience is that Alacarte does disable functionality of the Gnome menu editor.
From AUR the package doesn't work at all...
That has been my experience as well. If you read the notes for the Alacarte package at AUR you will see others have similar problems. For some, it works (?).
One option might be to try to make your own 0.8 PKGBUILD (rather than the current 0.9) from the information in the comments. Maybe it will help, maybe not.
Sorry I could not be more helpful.

  • [SOLVED]What happened to Distrowatch?

What happened to distrowatch? When I go to distrowatch.com I get a page saying this:
    Web Server's Default Page
This page is generated by Parallels Plesk Panel, the leading hosting automation software. You see this page because there is no Web site at this address.
    You can do the following:
Create domains and set up Web hosting using Parallels Plesk Panel.
For more information please contact Administrator.
I can get to distrowatch at this address: http://distrowatch.serve-you.net/ but alot of stuff is missing
I looked on Google and a lot of people are saying that it is working for them. Does anyone else have this problem or know why it is happening? It seems to me that distrowatch would have made an announcement if they were stopping the site or moving to a new address. Thanks

Both http://www.distrowatch.com and http://distrowatch.serve-you.net work for me. I am in the US in NY.
I did notice earlier this year that Distrowatch stopped rendering correctly with Adblock running. I like Distrowatch enough and their ads aren't too bad so I decided to whitelist them. I have a feeling though that this is unrelated to your problem...

I assume you're running nm-applet --sm-disable once you get a window manager session up?
Try starting networkmanager after hal. From the wiki:
You must also "disable" the default network daemon, and add the hal, dhcdbd and networkmanager daemons in this order:
    DAEMONS=( ... !network hal dhcdbd networkmanager ... )

  • What happened to LiveCycle Form Manager?

    Hello.
Our company is trying to implement an e-Form solution that could help us managing our e-Form documents. We found Adobe LiveCycle and think it is the best option but we want to figure out something we don´t get yet. We see that in LiveCycle 7.2 there was the LiveCycle Form Manager that was used to publish all forms, in their native formats, to a centralized form repository, leverage user profiles for data prepopulation upon form access.provide access and enable forms search through a Web interface and maintain version and access controls. In the Adobe LiveCycle ES we don´t find that module. Which module can give us the same functionalities that were offered with the Form Manager? Do we need to buy the entire suite?
In the future we are planning to buy the whole suite, but for now we would like to start only with the basic services the Form Manager used to offer.
    Thanks for any help.

When you install the Process Management Solution Component you get a new Web Application called "LiveCycle Workspace ES". This is not Form Manager, which is no longer distributed. But it would typically fulfill many of the operations that you are already familiar with using Form Manager; such as Starting a new Work flow activity, Browsing Tasks in a ToDo List and viewing your process history.
Workspace is a more Agile (Flash based) Web UI. One important difference is that it lists the work flow processes that you may initiate (not just a library of forms). Then the process will determine the actual form in the Repository that will be displayed in the UI.

  • [solved/cannot be solved]Xorg-server and gnome-power-manager

I was wondering if there is hope that someone will put patches to main tree of Xorg-server which are here: http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2009/08/ … of-bodges/
It should remove this weird blanking effect and time gap before screen is backlighted again. I didn't tested it, because it requires rebuild of xorg-server and I don't want to use git version, but guys there says that it's working.

OK, thanks for advice, I'll try building xorg-server with ABS.
I've got another problem with automatic turn off screen - media players don't prevent turning screen off while they are playing film. Is there any possibility to fix it? Only way I've found is to turn off automatic screen backlight off after couple of minutes, but it's not how tigers want this to work

  • [SOLVED] What happened to gedit-plugins-extra?

The gedit-plugins-extra package used to be in the AUR but is no more available there lately. A quick search with pkgfile revealed that it should be in community now:

Yet I cannot find such a (x86_64) package neither on my up-to-date mirror nor via "Package Search" on the home page.

schuay wrote:gedit-plugins-extra is being removed from community, afaik individual plugins will be repackaged.
you should get some more infos in a bit.
That is correct. Quoting the email I sent to aur-general:
I removed it from [community] because upstream stopped updating the plugin collection around two years ago. Most of the plugins included in the last release (2.24.1) are badly outdated by now. The preferable course of action is to add individual packages to the AUR for each of the plugins. (Packages for the latex and autotab plugins already exist.)
    Sorry for the confusion.

Today i updated KDE (to 4.7) by uninstalling/installing all the desktop. When i was reinstalling the apps i notice that partitionmanager is no longer available to download from extra.

It got dropped to AUR because it doesn't build with Parted 3.x (so it says in the comments)

The last troubleshooting caldron to OS9 (ie., dragging & dropping between users or the ability manipulate the system without permission issues-[or anything for that matter]) was the NetInfo Manager (via logging in as Root). What happened to the NetInfo Manager- where did it go?
The NetInfo Manager was removed in Mac OS X 10.5, as the NetInfo database is no longer used.
How can I login as the Root now?
Use the Directory Utility. If you need more control, download and install the Server Admin Tools and use the Workgroup Manager, supplying 127.0.0.1 as the IP and your regular username and password.

Anyone got any tips to what could be wrong? It's infuriating to have it ask to create a new key, while it won't let me set a blank key.
Giving the prompt an actual password works as intended, it's impossible to set it as a blank password, even using seahorse.
It's acting as if something is wrong with DBus, but journalctl -u dbus shows no problems. as well as systemctl status dbus.
    Thanks for any help.
Oh yeah and attempting to use gdm causes the gnome-session not to launch at all. Since gdm created a key, I'm guessing the problems are related.
Last edited by naelstrof (2013-09-05 03:27:50)

    I found an acceptable workaround:
Create a keychain with the same password as your account named "Login" using the keychain utility seahorse.
Follow the autologin instructions for console based login here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GN … at_Startup
    Restart X.
gdm still fails to start x though, despite the startx command working fine.
Uninstalling gnome-keychain works just as well though :u.

  • Gnome-keyring-daemon and ssh outside gnome

I had gnome-keyring set up so that on login it unlocks the keyring and reads ssh keys (so that it acts as a ssh-agent), as described here: http://live.gnome.org/GnomeKeyring/Ssh and here http://live.gnome.org/GnomeKeyring/Pam
This was working great also outside gnome (for instance in xmonad and openbox), up to version 2.24.1. However, after update to 2.26.0-1 this stopped working. It is still OK in gnome, but in other environments (where the only gnome thing that is loaded is gnome-keyring-manager) it doesn't work correctly - it loads, but instead of creating both /tmp/keyring-<sth>/socket and /tmp/keyring-<sth>/socket.ssh it only created the first one, so no ssh support.
Can anyone help a bit with what has changed, or what could have gone wrong?
    Thanks.

abarilla wrote:I had the same problem with openbox.  Using gdm fixed it.
Well if this is the only way to fix this then it sucks big time, since I don't want to run a huge login manager just to unlock the passwords
adding the content of /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/30-dbus to the ~/.xinitrc works for me.
    # launches a session dbus instance
    dbuslaunch="`which dbus-launch 2>/dev/null`"
    if [ -n "$dbuslaunch" ] && [ -x "$dbuslaunch" ] && [ -z "$DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS" ]; then
    eval `$dbuslaunch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session`
    fi
or sourcing the 30-dbus file in the ~/.xinitrc
    source /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/30-dbus
or for all files in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/
    source /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*
That's what GDM and KDM do.
Thanks to Jan de Groot for the hint.
