  • How do I change which application is the (default) for a given file type?

For .pdf files, I have set the application behaviour to "Always Ask", because sometimes I want to open the pdf, sometimes I want to save it. So far so good.
Now, when I want to open the .pdf, I have added an application to the dropdown list, so now I have "Adobe Reader 9 (default)" and "okular".
The problem is this: I *never* open using Adobe Reader. I always want to use okular, but Adobe Reader always appears first on the list, as it is the 'default'. This means I always have to click on the dropdown and select "okular", i.e. an extra step every time I want to open a pdf.
How do I change which application is the default?

Yes, I know that. That was the first sentence of my question, but it is not the problem I have.
I want to change which application is the (default) for a given file type, and this cannot be done from the settings.

iPad 2 has a black screen which lights up to a grey black screen when I press the power or home button but I dont see the apple logo. The battery is fully charged and when I plug it in to my computer, I can use iTunes to do everythng except backup the iPad since its passcode locked. Please help me resolve this problem. I don't have apple care

Yup! I've been there! You just have to double-tap the screen with three fingers and the zoom should go back. You have to turn off the feature in Settings>Accessibility>Zoom>and turn the switch off so this won't happen again when you double-triple tap.

  • On wake from screensaver, black screen, but functional swipe?

Recently, when I return to my computer after the display has gone to sleep (or the screensaver has activated), my screen goes black. Sometimes I have the spinny beachball, but sometimes it's just a pointer. I do not suspect any high CPU usage since I do not hear my fan. The strange thing is, if I use my 4-finger gesture to switch between spaces and full-screen apps, I can see my applications until the sliding animation finishes, at which point it returns to black. Once, when I caught it just right (during/after the animation), I got a dialog box to appear ("are you sure you want to close all tabs" or something similar) at which point I could use my computer again, until I clicked the "OK" button, which made it go back to the black screen. The only way I've been able to make it go away permanently is to hold down the power button to force a shut-down and reboot.
Recent updates that I can think of:
osx system update (I have 10.7.3 now)
Canon printer driver update (MP620B, driver version 10.51.2.0)
    Google Chrome 17.0.963.56
Non-obvious software that I frequently use (If you have the same problem, do you see any patterns?):
    PandoraJam Version 2.0 (579)
    Cyberduck 4.2.1 (9350)
    Textwrangler 3.5.3 (2890)
    Parallels Desktop 7.0.14922
    Adium 1.4.4
    Skype 2.8.0.866
Any help or things to try would be appreciated, I lose work every time I have to force-restart...
    Thanks,

    Update
I thought I would try something that has been used in many trouble shooting situations where there might be a hardware or software problem with the computer. Creating a new user account. While I do have another account to sign into on this computer. I chose to simply "log out" and let the computer go to sleep and later see if it wakes up. Sure enough it does wake up. And acts normally. I'm not sure if logging out is the same as another user account.
What if there is something in my main account causing the "wake from sleep" problem. Outside of "permissions" and "running scripts" to clean up accounting. What can I use to trouble shoot which situation is causing this? I've used a couple of pref checkers but with no luck. Log doesn't show what happens while computer is a sleep. Only reports time it went to sleep. And nothing about trouble waking up. I have seen a lot of wrong permissions in cups iofn the reports. And there are not fixed when trying to repair. Especially, in the Colorsync first aid.
Any advice? Or should I wait for 10.5.6 to see if it corrects my problem before I reinstall software?
    Donald
P.S.-the only software I have installed with nightly builds is the WebKit for Safari. It is much faster than Safari. Not sure why Safari is slugging/slowing it.

  • Permanently disable X/openbox screensaver (black screen after 10mins)

    Hey,
I run Archlinux with LXDE (openbox) for a few weeks now.
I've been trying to disable the black screen that openbox (or is it triggered farther above, at X level?) shows me after 10 minutes.
It works with the command "xset -dpms s off", which suggests that the screensaver is not openbox's fault, but X's.
However, xset's manpage says the settings I do will be reset when I log out.
How can I permanently disable the screensaver?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex

    Good post!
Had to modify it a bit for it to work.  Also added the Opera browser to the mix.  In particular, pgrep -lc and pgrep -lfc choked.  Modified those lines where necessary.  Haven't tested with Firefox, Chromium or MPlayer, as I don't have them installed.  Should work though.  I do not have any screensaver installed, but my screen was blanking after a few minutes.  The file below fixed that.

  • [SOLVED] UEFI with gummiboot: somtimes (!) just black screen

    Hi,
since two days I'm trying to get UEFI work on my Lenovo T420. The problem is that there's only a black screen when activating the "Arch Linux" entry in gummiboot if I have not plugged in the installation medium (as a USB drive). If it's inserted sytemd starts booting but stops at a certain point complaining there are starting jobs running on /dev/sdc (the USB drive); then I get to the rescue shell. If it's not inserted there's just a black screen. To start the system I have to leave the USB drive plugged in and fastly remove it when systemd starts booting after selecting "Arch Linux" in gummiboot. I don't know why, but the system does boot then.
This is what I have done:
In BIOS I changed the settings that it's booting with UEFI "and" BIOS at least trying first BIOS and then UEFI. I followed the installation instructions of the Beginner's Guide (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide) installing a system with LVM (ensuring that the install medium is booted in UEFI). I followed the recommendations of https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1240883 concerning partitioning. This is the setup I have:
    niklaas@len-t420-arch ~ % lsblk --output +UUID

    (/dev/sda is Windows 7)
Please note that I /dev/sdb1 is the EFI System Partition and there's also another partition (/dev/sdb2) I created just in case I want to use a separate /boot partition. (Currently there's syslinux on it because I was experimenting whether I get the system to boot normaly, which means without the USB drive, by using Legacy BIOS and syslinux. But I was not successful: Screen also stays black.) This is what /boot looks like and the contents of /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf and /boot/loader/loader.conf:
    niklaas@len-t420-arch ~ % tree /boot
    /boot
    ├── EFI
    │   ├── BOOT
    │   │   └── BOOTX64.EFI
    │   └── gummiboot

    niklaas@len-t420-arch ~ % cat /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf
    title Arch Linux
    linux /vmlinuz-linux
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    options root=UUID=349e5a88-72ca-40cb-8e44-0b67b85ffee4 rw
    niklaas@len-t420-arch ~ % cat /boot/loader/loader.conf
    timeout 3
    default arch
Additionally to the strange USB-drive-needs-to-be-plugged-in issue there is another one: Because there's a Windows 7 installation (unfortunately I need it) on /dev/sda with Truecrypt I decided to install two bootloaders: one is on /dev/sda and the other one on /dev/sdb. So I can "manually" switch between operating systems by using the boot manager that is provided by the BIOS of the motherboard which makes it possible to change boot priority quite simply. After the installation of gummiboot there was (of course) another entry created, so there are three:
    1. Linux Boot Manager
    2. ~first SSD (with Windows; /dev/sda)
    3. ~second SSD (with Arch Linux; /dev/sdb)
When I select the first entry, even the USB-drive-trick does not work. There just resides the black screen. This I do not understand at all because, as already described above:
If I select the third option, gummiboot gets loaded and I can select "Arch Linux". Then, as already mentioned, there are three options: (a) USB-drive is inserted > I plug it off immediately after systemd starts > system boots (b) USB-drive is inserted > I don't (!) plug it off > systemd complains about starting job running on /dev/sdc > I get the rescue shell (c) USB-drive is not (!) inserted > I just get a black screen.
I hope the issue I have is quite understandable. Otherwise, please ask and I'll try my best to clarify things. Any help is really appreciated,
    Niklaas
    niklaas@len-t420-arch ~ % uname -a

OK. I decided to use syslinux and installed it from the AUR. After installation was successfull, I copied all files as described in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/UE … LINUX_6.xx to /boot/syslinux and ran command
    # efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sdb -p 1 -l /EFI/syslinux/syslinux.efi -L "syslinux"
to create an entry. And I could just successfully boot without USB-drive. Thank you.

I guess, I also tried this before having the same outcome.
But I still do not understand what's happening when I select my second SSD; because there's still gummiboot loaded and I can still boot the system with the USB-drive. Does anybody know what's happening there? I'm totally clueless why the system is somehow accessing the flash drive?!

  • [SOLVED] log into KDE given a blank black screen with mouse cursor

    hi,

Restarted KDE, rebooted pc, reinstalled KDE (everything), xorg, nvidia, deleted xorg.conf created new user but nothing will give me my desktop back
once when i logged on, i had a kde crash report and messages on my widgets saying missing components. Tried to submit bug but missing debugging tools.
sometimes KDE won't log in at all.
forced an fsck on next boot with no errors found.
    please help

    Hi,
Have you tried the suggestion Cyber_Defend_Team provided?
If the issue persists, start the computer in Safe mode to check the result:
If it doesn't reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and basic device drivers as possible causes. If a recently installed program, device, or driver prevents Windows from running correctly, you can start your computer
in safe mode and then remove the program that's causing the problem.
If it still in the safe mode, we may need to repair the installation with the recovery media.
In addition, please logon the problematic computer with the domain user account which works fine in other computer to test to see if it's the user account issue.

  • Black screen but the xorg.log.0 don't have any error

I have a motherboard asus m4a78t-e with ati radeon hd 3300 video chip
and monitor samsung syncmaster 2333 with vga and dvi port I use the dvi port.
I have a strange behavior when ArchLinux start
Firts at all, the grup, next the boot secuence and when start the xorg I have a black screen , at firts I thought that the xorg was the guilty but when I saw the xorg,log.0(I start in console mode) and didn't find any error
I started the xorg and again black screen.
then I pressed crtl-alt-f1 without see nothing in my screen
and logme in  at root and  wrote "shutdown -h now" and my pc turn off
all this with my screen in black(for me this mean that the pc is not frozen).
I started the pc with x system and black screen, again .
The monitor have  vga and dvi port. I use the dvi port. Trying diferent things I discovered that my monitor have a function to change between vga and dvi port and when the x system star with the black screen I press the monitor button, change to vga and then press again to change vdi and buala I have my kdm screen.
The problem is that I must to do this every time that start my pc or restart the x system for example when I logout.
I use the last kernel 2.6.32-ARCH and xf86-video-ati 6.12.4-3 and xorg-server 1.7.3.902-1 I suse hal, don't have xorg.conf file. The problem started after the update the xorg version from 1.6 to 1.7 approximately 2 Months ago.
    Any suggestion?

Your "Vout" is a control, not an indicator. Nothing ever writes to it. Your FOR loop just pumps hot air and does not produce any output.
Calling an output of the formula node "Vout" is completely independent and does not magically write to an array control with the same name.
(What's the purpose of "R2" and "R2 2", seems redundant. Also learn about autoindexing. All your terminals belong before the loop, they need to be read only once)

My english is fine (i read well at least)  .
    At first message i said
    I have created /X11/xorg.conf & can start X server...
I =can= start x server --- its mean that startx works fine & i can see 3 windows with clock . And if you mean that i dont want use x -config, then for what all this manipulations with reinstalling was?
Besides "Xorg -configure" & "x -config /etc/xorg.conf" are different things for me, because one create the basic config, while second test this config. So i thought you mean that i have to create it from scratch without using any commands
... Damn.. i just have read english & russian beginner guides. Russian says: "after installing xorg u have to create conf file, using Xorg -configure, then test it with command X -config /root/xorg.conf.new & IF IT WORK - copy to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I didnt find that in english version .
Well, thank you for your patient & help . I think, that problem is solved (i think - say me if i wrong)
But i still want to know, why x -config /etc/xorg.conf give me that black screen + freeze, so if anybody knows - plz, message me.

  • Black screen on my imac 24''

Hi guys, the last week i have a problem with my imac 24" (Late 2007) AFTER 4 YEARS OF CRAZY USE WITH MUSIC APPLICATIONS. I get a black screen without an obvious reason. After many faults and crashes did the Apple Hardware Test (after 2 crashes while was testing) 3 times in a loop extented and simple mode(s) and it doesn't seem that is something wrong with the hardware. After that i did sharescreen it with my macbookpro while i was ready to connect it via firewire to see if i can read its hard disk.  I sharescreen it for the same reason, just to see if i can still read it while it goes black screen. The point is that it hasn't gone black screen for many hours yesterday and today while it's connected via sharescreen with the MBP and the firewire session didn't take place.
Today i noticed in my library/logs lots of crash and 3 panic reporters.
I have not lost anything and every application works like before.
    My questions are:
Can Kernel Panic take place without a message on the screen? As i wrote i got 3 panic reporters.
Do you think that if i'll do a format will it be a good idea?
Can a mac work fine for hours after these faults and the problem is still the hardware?
Thank you very much for your precious time.

If you had a Kernel Panic when you navigated to /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports you would have seen a folder for KP's. You didn't see one therefore no KP which means something else is going on.
If you want to do an erase and install it's not very difficult however before you do make sure you have a viable backup. My recommendation is either a Time Machine backup or even better create a bootable clone using Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner. IMHO it's wise to have redundant backups in the event one fails. Personally I use TM and SD on two separate external HD's.
To answer your question yes you can erase and install from teh orginal OS X Install DVD that came with your computer. If your machine orignally shipped with 10.5.x (Leopard) that is definetley the correct DVD to use. How you do is fairly simple:
With the DVD in the SuperDrive re-boot, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key and choose the DVD.
Choose the language then select the Utilities menu and open Disk Utility. In DU select the HD on the left then select the Erase tab, make sure the Format says "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then click Erase. This will totally wipe everything off your HD!!!!
Next exit Disk Utility and continue with the Install and as mentioned in my first post use the Setup Assistant guide to help you install and restore your data from the backup.
Assuming you don't have a hardware issue your system should work OK. If you still have a black screen you probably have a hardware issue and should take the machine to an Apple Store or AASP to have it professionally diagnosed.

  • Windows 7 black screen with mouse in normal mode only

Windows 7 Ultimate goes to login screen on startup.  After login to any account (which takes longer than normal - normal is pre-issue) the screen goes black and I'm left with a mouse and no keyboard input.  I can boot into any mode except Normal
mode - Normal mode is the only mode where I cannot get my desktop.
I tried 'Last known good configuration' and that works until I reboot or shut down the computer, which then goes back to the black screen on startup and login.  Also, when I do utilize the 'Last known good configuration' boot, I lose my network card
driver.  That's not a problem because I just reinstall it and I can then connect.
I ran anti-virus with zero results.  I ran Malwarebytes with zero results.  I ran SUPERAntiSpyware with zero results (exempting cookies).
I have yet to see another post where someone can get into any mode except Normal mode, or keep their 'Last known good configuration' only once before it goes bad/corrupt on them.  I don't know what else to look for.  My registry shows Shell = Explorer.exe,
and any other registry checks mentioned in other posts come out valid (nothing to change/update).
What should I do short of reinstalling Windows?

    Hi,
Besides that, you also could try startup repair to fix this issue.

  • Can't boot my T500 anymore... just getting to a black screen after the XP logo

I have a big problem with my Lenovo T500. Never had any problems before. Then yesterday, I could not open OpenOffice anymore, neither convert to pdf from an already open OpenOffice document. I got error messages saying the programmes can't be openend. After trying to re-install Adobe Reader failed, I simply wanted to restart the computer, seeing if that oculd help. And now the big problems started...
Re-booting was not possible. For 20 seconds, it seemed normal. But directly after the Windows XP logo (using
Windows XP Professional 1), the screen went black and that was it. I see the mouse cursor and can move it, but that's it.
After waiting some time, I turned the laptop off with the power button. And restarted it. This time getting to the screen where I could choose "safe mode" or normal startup, because the computer had been shut down improperly. First I tried normal mode, which lead to the same black page. Then I did the same again and tried "safe mode", which didn't work either - I just got the black screen with the "safe mode" notifier in every corner.
What I tried then was the ThinkVantage button directly when starting the computer. Which lead me to the "rescue and recovery" menu where I could choose what to do: Complete recovery, losing personal files (it's about music, pictures, text documents for me) or quick recovery without losing files. Also there was the option of saving files before through USB. This is what I tried first. I marked 50GB of files and wanted to transfer them. Problem: Every external harddrive or USB stick I connected was not identified. So this failed.
I chose to go with "quick recovery" first then. This took about 20mins. When it was done there was an automatic re-start which unfortunately got stuck at the black screen again...
3 more re-starts using the power button did not bring anything either. The ThinkVantage button does not let me access the rescue and recovery menu anymore. It just says something like "checking the system" and then there is an automatic re-boot, which ends up at the black page.
I am mighty scared now that I lost my computer and the data on it (I have backups for most things, but still).
Does anyone know anything that could be done now? I do not have XP or anything, by the way. I bought this computer used a year ago and got it complete with XP installed (although I do have the product key). The warranty from the place expired 5 days ago and the place is in Germany, but I live in Sweden. They told me they can't help me but I should contact a local repair place.
If anyone has an idea about what the problem could be (virus??) and maybe some help, I would be VERY VERY thankful.

Maybe I should add that I probably didn't do the best thing with anti virus programs. I used Microsft Security Essentials, which was installed when I bought the computer.
When downloading some program (not sure whether it was Acrobat Reader), I was asked to get McAfee. Kind of weird, I had said no. But McAfee somehow checked my computer and told me my MP4 player contained a trojan. That was 5 days ago. Security Essentials couldn't find it, even scanning the MP4 player directly. I guess I should have switched right away and to get McAfee to remove the thing? Maybe this is what caused all the trouble...

  • Installed splashy and now I just get a black screen

Hi everyone. I am fairly new to Arch (just installed it last week) and just messed up my computer... please bear with me.
I wanted to install a splash screen so I installed splashy. I might have been a little reckless with the installation which resulted in booting into a black screen.
I wasn't sure whether to go for Uvesafb or KMS so I just went with Uvesafb.
In the "Prepare the system" section it says "Remember to remove any framebuffer-related kernel boot parameter from the bootloader configuration: the vga=<foo> would force the old vesafb to load; the video=<foo> parameter would not be used when uvesafb is compiled as a module (as in the Arch Linux stock kernel)." I didn't know what that meant so I just ignored it (that's very reckless I know...)
As for the second line (Procure disabling KMS before attempting to boot into framebuffer. Failure to do so will result in a pitch-black screen, leaving no option but to restart the machine with Ctrl+Alt+Del. For Intel cards, append i915.modeset=0 to GRUB's entry to disable KMS.), I figured since I'm not going for KMS, it wasn't necessary so I just went on.
My laptop has an AMD processor and an ATI graphics card so I didn't see the point of installing 915resolution. I did it anyways and after doing so it said that 915resolution is only compatible with Intel cards. So I uninstalled it.
I followed the rest of the wiki and then rebooted my computer to see how it goes.
The splash screen shows up and some texts show up behind the progress bar that I couldn't read. The screen then goes black and the cursor shows up. But that's all there is. By randomly clicking, I could tell that gdm had loaded and I was able to find the password text box to log in. After logging in, the screen remained black. I could launch Firefox using a keyboard shortcut but everything was still black.
I know this is all my fault for not doing the proper research but how do I fix this?

Mr Green wrote:Use Arch cd and chroot in to repair install
I've chrooted into it and undid everything and yet it doesn't change anything. I've uninstalled splashy and v86d, reedited the conf files to their original form. Perhaps there is some modifications that I am not aware of that happened during the installation. Packages I installed were splashy-full, v86d, and 915resolution-static which I have all removed. Files I've modified include rc.conf, mkinitcpio.conf, /boot/grub/menu.lst, and uvesafb.conf. Aside from pacman I ran the command mkinitcpio -p kernel26

  • Windows boots but won't load (Black screen with cursor)

[Sorry for the long post, but I feel the need to fully explain my situation]
    I have the following problem:
I turn on my PC, and Windows shows it's normal loading screen, after which it goes into a completely black screen, with just the mouse in the middle. By the cursor size I can tell that it's in a low resolution, probably 800x600 (compared to my usual 1920x1080). I am able to move the mouse around, but with no particular use without something to click on. No other keyboard input seems to work, except for Shift key 5 times, which brings up the Sticky Keys dialog box (with just "Yes" or "No" options, no other link); and Windows key+U which brings up the Ease of Access center. Ctr+Alt+Del does NOT work.
So far this is what I have tried (in chronological order):
Boot into Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Booting in low resolution video, Last known good configuration: all yield the same result as booting normally.
    Repair your computer:
Startup Repair: Found Registry Errors (I realized and fixed this later on)
System Restore: Did not find any previous restore points (I know for sure that there are, I made a habit of making restore points regularly).
Windows Memory Diagnostics: Did not find errors.
    Command prompt:
Ran chkdsk /f /r command, did not report errors.
Ran sfc /scannow : I don't remember the exact report, but it asked for a restart to finish repairing problems. I restarted, and ran the command again for the same result.
Forced the scan with: sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows , it found and repaired some errors, still could not load windows.
Ran Dell Startup Diagnostics, found no errors.
Ran Startup Repair again, found the registry errors again. I found the solution to this in a Microsoft Help forum ( answers.microsoft.com/.../f77d5355-b8be-41d6-af24-cae994e1768f ), and fixed the issue. I rebooted, but the problem persists.
Startup Repair now finds no errors. I tried System Restore again, it found 2 restore points dated AFTER my problem started. I decided to restore anyways, but neither of them worked.
    I ran Windows Defender Offline:
Quick Scan: and found 2 threats and removed them.
Full System Scan: found 4 more threats, removed 2 of them, the other two couldn't be removed because they were within an ISO file.
I tried Steps 1, 2 and 3 again with no luck.
With each step I am aware that I'm closer to having to reinstall Windows, so I decided to see if I could still access my HHDD to save my personal files. I made a Linux live CD (with Ubuntu), but I am having trouble mounting the drives, because they are in a RAID0 configuration. "sudo dmraid -s" gives the following error: "ERROR: isw: wrong number of devices in RAID set "isw_dbdffjficc_ARRAY0" [1/2] on /dev/sdb".
    Important Details:
I changed my graphics card about 4 months ago (an Nvidia GTX 750ti for an ATI Radeon HD 6450), and I was told that I may be running short with the Power Supply. The new card asks for a minimum of 450W and I think my PSU is 460W. This may or may not have something to do with this issue, I have no idea.
The RAID0 configuration of my 2 500GB Hard Drives brought me a lot of problems from day 1. One of the HDD would randomly fail (I am able to hear a different clicking sound when this happens), and the computer would crash. Upon startup, it would ask for a boot device. The Dell startup utility would then only recognize 1 of the drives, but would finish without errors. After a restart or two, all would be fine and windows would boot normally (aside from the usual error recovery screen) without any sign of corrupted data or anything. Like I said, this has been happening form the day my PC arrived, but restarting a couple of times always fixed it. As of now, both HHDD seem to be working fine, the Dell utility recognizes both of them, and does not find errors in any of them, and I can access any directory from the command prompt.
Is there anything else I should try before reinstalling Windows?
Before the install, I would really like to be able to recover my files (I have important documents from college), is there any way to do this?
Sorry again for the extremely long post (and for any language errors, English is not my native language), and thanks in advance.

Since you still haven't got your data from the drive(s). I would advise performing a Windows installation without formatting the drive... I don't like this solution but at this stage you have probably tried everything else.
Use a Windows 7 Reinstallation DVD when installing ensure you select...
Select Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)
If you do not select any of the drive options and simply highlight the largest partition and select next:
Windows will dump all the old installation files in the Windows.old folder

  • PopcornTime starts with a black screen and does not load

I installed PopcornTime from the AUR and it does not seem to load. When I launch the application, it simply loads a black screen and does not move from there.  When I launch the application from the terminal, I get this output.
