[SOLVED] wicd fails to automatically connect to a network

I have just upgrade to kernel 3.6.5-1 and after that wicd fails to autoconnect to my wireless network which I have set "Automatically connect to this network" from wicd-curse.
Is anyone experiencing the same issue? Any idea on what causing the issue?

Do you think some more information might help?
Start with telling us your chipset. Check with lspci -nn (That would be two n's, not m)
Also, is it your router? Is it encrypted? WPA? WEP?
Can you see it with iwlist scan
Can you associate with the access point by hand?
Is there anything interesting in the journal (or logs)?
What DE are you using?
Is the WAN blocked? (Check with rfkill list)

Wicd does not automatically connect to eth0

Wicd works fine using my wireless network. It does not automatically connect to eth0 when I plug in a cable, but I can connect to it by pressing connect manually.
I already have ethtool installed (do I need to run ethtool as a daemon???)

Thanks for your answers, 1) no I'm not connected to wireless, and 2) eth0 is disabled.
I found out it works fine if I connect eth0 manually and then I can remove and plugin the cable all I want and it automatically connects. This is because dhcpcd is already running for eth0 so maybe I should run dhcpcd eth0 in a boot script (although I think wicd should do this).

Are you using IPM commit driver for commiting the document from ODC?
If yes,did you check connection setting ,is it successful?

After updating my iPhone 5 to iOS 8.1 it will not connect to the wifi network at work even though it recognizes it. It however still automatically connects to the network at home. I have restared the phone and toggled the router, still no connection

When your device is trying to connect to the work Wi-Fi network, go to Settings > Wi-Fi > then tap on the name of the Netowrk that she is having trouble with. Then tap on forget this network. Let the device attempt to connect again and make absolutely sure she is trying to connect to the work network and not a nearby network, then make absolutely sure the password is entered correctly.

PC will not automatically connect to wireless network on startup...

Hi all - I have a WRTG54 wirless router with the latest firmware. Windows XP Home SP2. I have a mixed network with two wired PCs and one wireless. The wireless PC will not automatically connect to the network. To connect to the network i have to go to the wireless network properties box and check "let windows automatically configure network" Once I do this the wirelss PC connects with no problem. Unfortunatley, whenever i turn the PC off and turn it back on the "let windows automatically configure network" is unchecked and i have to go through the process of checking it again. I uninstalled the wireless adapter and reinstalled the drivers only and then ran the windows wireless setup wizard but the problem persists. Any help on this would be much appreciated.!!!! Thanks!!

First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Do not let "Windows automatically configure your network". Instead do the following:
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. Delete your current network (this will remove any old settings). Reboot computer. Return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your current network info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings". Reboot computer. It should connect automatically. If you still have trouble, in the computer, temporarily disable your software firewall, including Windows Firewall, and see if that helps.
Some users have reported improved wireless connections by switching to WPA ( = WPA with TKIP) encryption.

Furthermore, you may want to avoid giving your network a common name. While the following article (and excerpt) refer to iOS devices, the same applies for your Mac:

If you were to give your wireless network a common name (SSID), users of your network who use iOS devices [sic] and are away from your network would run the risk of joining a different network with the same name. Having joined the unexpected network, they would be exposed to potential data theft.
Because of this security issue, Apple maintains a list of common or ambiguous SSIDs, including the default SSID for many commercially available access points, as well as the SSIDs "wireless" and "default". If your network's name is on the list, any iOS device [sic] that joins the network stores the access point's BSSID and associates it with the network's SSID. Subsequently, it will only auto-join the network if the access point's BSSID matches the information the device has stored. This avoids joining a different network with the same name.

My Photosmart C410 won't automatically connect to the Network

My Photosmart C410 won't automatically connect to the Network, I have to put in my password for the router every time I turn on the printer from the printer keyboard. Is there anyway that the printer will automatically connect to my network?

Tell me about your network - router brand/model, encryption type (WEP, WPA, etc) and ISP type (DSL, Cable, etc).
When you turn off your printer, are you totally removing power from it (like shutting off a power strip)?

IPhone 5s won't automatic connect to cellular network after the wifi connection lost.

My iPhone 5s won't automatic connect to cellular network after the wifi connection lost. I have try make a restore and open again my cellular data but the problem is still there, after I try to restart my iphone then can use my cellular data, but after few hour ago I still confront the same problem too.

I also tried a total reset. But it didn't work.

Automatic connection to wireless network

In FreeBSD I had my wireless connections set up in wpa_supplicant.conf and in rc.conf I had someting like: ifconfig_ath0="WPA DHCP". Nothing else. It would automatically connect to the first available network (according to the settings in wpa_supplicant.conf). I believe it also automatically switched over to another network, as I moved arround with my laptop.
In Arch I tried the same thing, but I don't think it understood wlan0="wpa dhcp" in rc.conf, because it didn't work. It surprises me that it doesn't seem to be as simple as that.
I have two questions:
1) Is there a way to set this up as simple as in FreeBSD - without installation of netcfg or anythink like that - just using wpa_supplicant?
2) With netcfg I have a long waiting time while wireless profiles fail at boot - one after another. Can I have netcfg do it faster - perhaps by having it do a scan and NOT try to connect to networks that aren't even in the scan results?

1) Briefly, no. More specifically, you will need netcfg, wicd, networkmanager, or some other similar utility to automate wpa connections. I'm not familiar with FreeBSD, but based on the information provided, I'm absolutely certain that it is using scripting similar to netcfg. The only difference seems to be that they provide it by default, whereas Arch allows the users to install it or not as required.

Won't automatically connect to Airport network after 10.4.8 update

After updating my Mac Mini CoreDuo from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8, it will no longer automatically connect to our Airport Express based Wi-Fi network. Even though the Network settings in System Preferences have not changed, and they do list it as the preferred network, it still will not automatically connect after log in.
Does anyone have this issue, and know of a solution?
(aside from the workaround of manually connecting after log in, and after waking the computer from sleep).
Background: My setup is to join preferred networks by default, the network name continues to be the one listed, the network still continues to show up in the Airport network list in the upper right corner of the screen. In essence, the Mac sees it is there but just won't connect to it. We have two other Macs in the household, both are PowerPC based, and both were updated to 10.4.8, and they have no issues. They continue to automatically connect to the Wi-Fi network we have. This seems to be with our Intel Mac only.

This all happens most likely due to a corrupted key chain (entry).
For instance, if you choose to keep your local Airport password stored in your personal key chain it needs to be accessible by the private Apple Airport Framework used by the network preferences. If this by any means, is not possible - the automatic login into you Airport WiFi network cannot take place.
All you have to do to get this fixed is:
1) Launch your Keychain Access Application located at: /Applications/Utilities
2) Open the Keychain First Aid (under the Main Menu: Keychain Access)
3) Set the Radio Button to Repair and enter your Keychain Password (most likely your personal password)
4) Start.....
Now after your personal keychain (name=username) is repaired it might be listed double in your Keychain List Window (it depends how you've setup the keychain). If so, NEVER DELETE ONE OF THIS ENTRIES because that's obviously a cosmetic bug in the Keychain Access Application but not harmful. Just look in your local Preferences Folder, locate the file "com.apple.keychainaccess.plist" and thrash it. Re-launch the Keychain Access Application and there is only one again.
Restart your Mac and........
After all I think anything should be back up to how it supposed to be. :-))

Airport Extreme Card (will not automatically connect to home network)

Running OSX (10.4.7) on a G5 2.0 DualCore. I just had an Airport Extreme Card installed by Apple a week ago. Everything was working fine with WiFi ( I use a Lynksys Router. But oddly now when I cold boot up, the Airport Extreme will not automatically connect to my home network. The little Airport icon on the upper right is always greyed out ( even though clicking on the icon... says that Airport is "On" ). So I now have to manually select my home network everytime I boot up. The first week or so though, I didn't have to do this...it just automtically connected to my home network. I made no changes to the router settings, nor the Network prefs.

I have been able to get my home network running with simultaneous access to the internet with the MacMini and the PB G4 via a WL router (Netgear WGR614v4 with four ethernet ports).
This was the process:
1a) Turned off airport on both computers.
1b) Turned off both compters and
1c) disconnected the router from the cable modem.
a) Disconnected ethernet cable from WL router to Macmini.
2b) Powered down the router for 10 seconds.
3a) Keeping both computers unpowered,repowered router and pressed the reset button (behind an unmarked tiny hole in the back of the router) then re-connected it to cable modem. Waited 30 - 40 seconds until internet service lights flickered green.
3b) Reconnected ethernet cable to MacMini and turned on power for MacMini. No Airport running. With administrator privilege I configured in Syst. Prefs. "Sharing" folder Internet access using "Built in Ethernet" port for computers running "Airport".
4) Turned Airport network on in MacMini and started browser.
Result: Internet connection established.
5a) Powered up PB G4 and then turned Airport on.
5b) In Syst. Prefs. in "Sharing" folder turned Internet Sharing off. But set "Share your connection from Airport" to computers using: Airport with check-mark. (No Built-in Ethernet and no Built-in FireWire!)
5c)Started browser. Result: Internet connection established.
6a) In the Finder window of both computers I clicked on "Go" in toolbar and looked for the name of the other computer, which were listed as alias besides the "Library" and "Servers" aliases. Clicking on the computer alias brought up the 'Networked Globe' and a control button "Connect".
6b) Clicking on "Connect" brought up the mounted drive of the other computer.
Result: Wireless network operational.
PS: I don't dare yet using encryption for the airport network. That's for another day.

[SOLVED] Cannot get wpa_supplicant to connect to WPA network

first of, thanks for the great wiki & forum. I am very new to linux (I've startet with Ubuntu last week) so configuring is something very new to me. Now, on topic:
I am using a Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter (F5D7050 / v.4003). The Ubuntu Wiki says that the zd1211rw driver is the correct one. But: if I don't have any encryption set
on my wireless network , I can simply connect using
# iwconfig
# ifconfig wlan0 up
# iwconfig wlan0 essid <myssid>
# dhcpcd wlan0
so it is working, I can browse the web, etc.
But if I re-enable WPA/WPA2 (a mixed network), I cannot connect, neither using the method described above, nor using this:
# ifconfig wlan0 up
# iwconfig wlan0 essid <myssid>
# wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
If I use the wpa_supplicant method, it gives me the following error:
Trying to associate with xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (SSID='<myssid>' freq=2442 MHz)
CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys
ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: No such file or directory
Associated with xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
Authentication with xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx timed out.
CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys
ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: No such file or directory
And it goes on and on like that, just reprinting these lines forever until I stop the session. I have also tried ndiswrapper, madwifi, prism54 (and zd1211rw, but it says it doesn't exist), without success.
Here's my wpa_supplicant.conf:

Now, i don't know whether this is a driver problem (driver I'm using not working with WPA), a config problem (but why can I connect to unencrypted networks, then?) a router problem (I dont think so, because Windows can connect to the encrypted network without problems.), or anything else...
I have also tried netcfg, but according to the wiki it doesn't work without a properly configured wpa_supplicant anyway, so the fact that it isn't working is not surprising.
I have read in a lot of places about this, and many people seem to have wireless problems but none of the sollutions worked. I seem to be missing something crucial, like configurating a file. Could anyone give me a pointer? If you need additional files / outputs, let me know!

First off, welcome to the Arch forums.
I had problems initially with wpa_supplicant, as well, but that was awhile ago so I'll try to see if I can give you a little assistance. This is my /etc/wpa_suppicant.conf.

So as you can see, I don't have the ctrl_interface=DIR=...etc, so I don't know if that is your problem. Also, did you create a /var/run/wpa_supplicant directory (this messed me up at first, even though it was mentioned in the wiki)?
I do use netcfg, as well as wifi-radar to let me see what networks are available when I travel. This is my /etc/network.d/wireless profile--if you want to try that.

My ip is static but I believe you just have to replace "static" with "dhcp" if you choose that.
Don't know if any of that will help but if you can connect without encryption, wpa is likely your culprit.
