[Solved] Wicd won't kill dhcpcd on disconnect

Wicd is having problems when I need to reconnect to my home network (crappy router). It seems that it doesn't stop the dhcpcd process when I make it reconnect and consequently fails at the "Obtaining IP Address" stage. I have to manually stop it with dhcpcd -k wlan0
Current versions are:
wicd 1.5.9-1
dhcpcd 5.0.4-1
My pkg cache has versions 4.0.12-1 5.0.1-1 5.0.2-1 and 5.0.4-1 of dhcpcd. Wicd has not ever been upgraded on this laptop.
The only dhcpcd version that works correctly is 4.0.12-1 and it is killed upon disconnect of the network. It's still running after disconnect with any of the 5.0.* versions.
It seems that dhcpcd has changed it's behaviour in however it is interfaced with wicd and the current version of wicd doesn't like it.
Has anyone else had this problem?

For about the same period of time I've had trouble reconnecting to my wireless network after waking from sleep mode.  The log indicates that the problem for me might be with restarting dhcpcd:

7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect. I loaded some new music, synced and ejected correctly. screen went black on unplug. Waited, did the button trick, didn't work. plugged it back in & it is recognized immediately. restored, resynced & ejected again. same thing-black screen w/ no response. Charged it overnight. ejected, screen then went to language setting. OK for English, eject & back to black on unplug. Switched ports for cable, tried eject thru PC...all resulting in dead nano after unplug. I really don't want to charge into the store & take it out on the poor kid who will catch the brunt of my frustration. anyone have a suggestion?

    Hello Marie,
I would be concerned too if my iPod nano was not powering on.  I found an article for the 6th generation iPod nano that has steps you can take for an issue like this (the only difference for the 7th generation iPod nano is the steps you will take for the reset. I included the steps to reset a 7th generation iPod nano below):
Will not turn on or screen remains dark
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting the device while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for at least eight seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.
You can find the full article here:
iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3474
All the steps apply to the 7th generation except the steps for the reset.  To reset a 7th generation iPod nano, use these steps:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for six seconds, or until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo appears after a few seconds, and then the Home screen. You may need to repeat this step.
I got these steps from this tutorial, which may also help with your iPod not appearing in iTunes:

  • [SOLVED] Problem with netctl and dhcpcd

    Hi everybody,
I had a problem with netctl and dhcpcd.
I was using netctl and wifi-menu to connect to wirelless networks with dhcp.
It worked fine at home, then i went to a friend where it also worked but then i went back home and it failed at every try with those error messages:
    dhcpcd[2718]: version 6.0.5 starting
    dhcpcd[2718]: wlp9s0: rebinding lease of 192.168.1.154
    dhcpcd[2718]: wlp9s0: reject NAK via 192.168.178.1
    dhcpcd[2718]: wlp9s0: soliciting a DHCP lease
    dhcpcd[2718]: wlp9s0: offered 192.168.178.44 from 192.168.178.1
    dhcpcd[2718]: timed out
network[2659]: DHCP IP lease attempt failed on interface 'wlp9s0'
    systemd[1]: netctl@wlp9s0\xxx.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
systemd[1]: Failed to start Automatically generated profile by wifi-menu.
systemd[1]: Unit [email protected] entered failed state.
I figured that dhcpcd tried to rebind an ip that my router rejected and didn't accept the ip that it offered instead.
    The solution was to delete:
    /var/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-wlp9s0.lease
now how can i configure netctl and or dhcpcd so that won't happen again and that it accepts all ips offered by routers?

I've had this happen now and again. You can rebind the lease yourself with:
    $ dhcpcd --rebind
You could also try increasing the timeout by adding
    TimeoutDHCP=
to your netctl profile/s - see netctl.profile(5) as WonderWoofy suggests. Although I haven't tried the latter.

  • [half-solved] Firefox won't open GtkFileChooserDialog

    Hey,
i have a rather strange problem: In Firefox i can't open the "Save File" dialogue. Whether it's in Preferences -> General -> Browse (to change the Download directory) or just rightclicking any link and trying to save it - no dice. The download folder is set to Desktop (can't change it) and even though that directory exists and when set to save files automatically, Firefox will not save/download files.
    Effectively, i can't download.
GtkFileChooserDialog shows up fine in any other application, including Chromium.
I can't tell you much about how this happened. I set up the system about a week ago and i have an almost 1:1 identical installation on my laptop where i don't have this issue:
Identical .mozilla folder, theme and gtk configuration, mime configuration, file browser, almost all the same packages, really.
The only differences might be some files in $HOME (though not .mozilla), i've had that partition for years. Though, again, most important config files are shared between the laptop and the PC and i have already deleted the .cache and any firefox related files as well as started firefox in safe-mode. FFS. The PC also uses ATI Catalyst drivers but i doubt that's related.
    WM is Awesome 3.4.
    Any idea what's going on?
    Cheers
    P.S.:
I've found out that setting "browser.folder.downloadList" (in about:config) to 2 (integer) fixes this problem. But it's very shaky, when i try to change the directory in the Preferences it will revert back to "browser.folder.downloadList 0" and the problem reoccurs. So, i won't mark this solved just yet but this a workaround for now. Still don't know why or what exactly is happening.

Try using Mozilla's Firefox build and see if it still happens.
Also try switching to the open-source ATI drivers instead of Catalyst. Despite your doubt it *may* be the issue.

  • [Solved] Audition won't start with [...\Preferences.cpp-253] error on windows 7/vista x64.

Hi! You have really nice support for Audition - 3 pages of problems here and no solution. Just kidding
So i've decided to help those poor users, that encounter the following problem (it may (or may not) arise after installing Adobe CS* with Audition already installed on the system)):
Adobe Audition crashes at start with the following error:
    [\premiere2.0\Backend\Src\Core\Preferences.cpp-253]
After applying the Windows XP compatibility mode error chages to:
Adobe Audition could not find a supported audio device. Please check your device settings.
    Then it crashes like before.
Uninstalling Adobe Premiere won't help, by the way.
This problem is somehow related to the audition_settings.xml file in the Data folder and deleting this file solves the problem. You can aslo delete the whole folder - it will be created again on a next Adobe Audition start. Here is the path:
    C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Audition\3.0\audition_settings.xml
Some technical data on my system:
OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 (don't be confused - it is in every way identical to Windows 7 x64, at least for Adobe products). I have a strong feeling that Vista x64 users may encounter that too.
    Installed Adobe products:
    1. Adobe Audition
    2. Adobe Master Suite CS5 (without premier)
    3. Adobe Acrobat X
I hope that my post will help you solve the error in the next release!

  • [SOLVED] Booting windows 7 kills Arch

    Hi,
I'm dual booting Arch with windows 7 and recently when I boot windows 7, I can't boot Arch afterwards.
After I shutdown windows, I start up my laptop again, I get the grub menu and select Arch. During boot I get a lot of output during the file system check ( I think, it's hard to see because it goes to fast; ) and then Arch freezes. The only thing that I can do is a force shut down with the power button. I boot again and launch the Arch Fallback kernel. That one is then able to boot but freezes when kdm is launched: I get the login screen for tty 1 but when the graphical login managers fires up I only get a black screen and everything freezes ( can't switch to a terminal or use ctrl+alt+backspace ). I have to force shutdown with the power button again. I boot up again, select the Fallback kernel again and everything works fine. After that I can boot with the normal Arch kernel without a problem.
Is there a way to log the output on the screen during boot up ? I've searched the logs in /var/log/ but can't find that output.
This only happens since yesterday. I was looking for CPU scaling modules and loaded the powernow-k8 module according to the wiki. The power manager of KDE needed additional modules, KDE loaded the modules itself and I put all the modules in /etc/rc.conf. Strange thing is that I also lost my wifi yesterday and it still doesn't work, not on Arch nor Windows ( Wired internet does work on both ).
While checking the the daemon.log I found this, don't know if it's really helpfull:

I had windows vista and windows 7 in dual boot with Mandriva linux for a year without any problem and right now I have absolutely no idea what's going on.
    EDIT:
Tried it again to see if I could get some more information.
Apparently the first time I boot Arch after a windows boot, it doesn't really freeze. I tried to write down some of the output and after a while it continued for a second and stopped again and this went going on and on. It seems like it keeps looping the same output. I waited some more but I had to force shut down because my laptop was going nuts and overheating, it started to smell like burned electronics...
I was able to capture some of the output:
    --[end trace 27ebd855... ]---
    Call trace
    [<ffffffff8117c420>] ? proc_lookup_de+0x20/0x100
    [<ffffffff81009ec2>] ? system_call_fastpath
Code ff .. .. .. and a lot more of pairs of letters and numbers
The output at the beginning was to fast to see but the Call trace and Code kept on repeating.
After this I could boot up the Fallback kernel without a problem, kdm worked fine to, then rebooted using the normal kernel image like nothing happened before.
    Any help would be appreciated,

Well since it worked fine first it could only be the powernow-k8 module or the CPU scaling modules required by KDE. I'll check it out and report back.
    EDIT:
Narrowed it down to the cpufreq_powersave and cpufreq_userspace modules. Powernow-k8, cpufreq_stats and cpufreq_ondemand work fine.
I disabled all the modules and then turned them back on one by one in rc.conf ( booting w7 everytime ). cpufreq_powersave turned on gave the strange output during boot but only a short version but completely ran down X or kdm after boot. With cpufreq_userspace I could boot but KDE froze right after login. Combination of the two modules resulted in being unable to boot.
Loading the modules after boot while running KDE gives no problem and since I'm a laptop user I could use the powersave module. I'll see if I can make KDE load that module automatically after login.
Thanks a lot for the tip !

  • [Solved] KDE4 won´t finish loading after login-in with KDM

I have been trying to solve this for a while but I'm still struggling to solve it. The problem is that I can't successfully start KDE4; after trying to log as a normal user with a password the loading screen that shows the KDE icons (a harddrive, some tools and a globe) it gets stuck on the desktop icon.
I could load KDE once, but I had to start X first and then use the xterm to call startkde, nevertheless it didn't asked for a user/pass and there was no menu visible only the desktop with the computer icon. (Not to mention I had to start it manually.)
This are the points that are currently apply to my machine:
KDE was installed as the normal user with sudo.
It was installed using the minimal install command:  pacman -S kdebase kde-l10n-es phonon-vlc kdebase-workspace.
Right now I'm trying to start KDE at boot by using the inittab method. As suggested in here.
Because of it, if I try to run startx it will load kdm which will then try to load KDE without success.
This is the .xinitrc file in my user folder.

I believe that the most important file here is the xsession-error, and as I have said the file is cut at last line that appeared before the KDE got stuck, in case it is not enough info just tell me how much should I let it run.
    Any suggestions?

Compositing is needed for the desktop effects, everything from shadows under windows to things like the desktop cube. Its difficult to say whether its a nvidia or kde bug since I was just going on guesswork; I know that compositing is started at about the point you mention the freezes. I don't know how far KDE loaded when you started it manually since I don't really recognise your description of what it was like but I'd guess that some other window manager (twm perhaps if you've been following the wiki) was already running, in which case kwin (which does the compositing) would not have started.
Since desktop effects really improve the look and feel of kde (things like shadows and improved window switchers, desktop cube and the like are pure eye-candy) you may wish to debug further. Your graphics card should be able to run desktop effects as I have a laptop with a previous generation nvidia chip which runs fine after a bit of tweaking.
If you load the desktop effects section of system settings you should see a checkbox "Enable desktop effects" if you check that you'll be able to switch to the "All effects" tab. Try disabling the Blur effect and clicking "Apply". If kwin still can enable compositing you'll see a box with a countdown that will automatically disable desktop effects again if you don't choose to keep the new settings. You might also want to try changing the scale method from "Accurate" to "Smooth" in the advanced tab.

  • [solved]jack won't start... :(

    Hi there
So here's my first topic in this forum
I would love to record some ideas with ardour, but I can't get jack running. I use qjackctl as interface, the settings used to work some weeks ago, when I recorded the last time
I tried both running qjackctl as user and as root
In the status window of qjackctl the following message appears
    user:
cannot use real-time scheduling (FIFO at priority 10) [for thread -1209411904, from thread -1209411904] (1: Operation not permitted)
    cannot create engine
18:51:25.919 JACK was started with PID=4717.
    18:51:25.921 JACK was stopped successfully.
I found plenty of things on google about this error message and they all tell me to look deeper into limits.conf, which looks like this here
    * - rtprio 0
    * - nice 0
    @audio - rtprio 99
    @audio - nice -10
    @audio - memlock unlimited
(the lines above are alle with a # in front)
I'm sure this is right, so where is the mistake?!?!

I boot into X with startx, so no login manager is running here. But I've been doing this for many months now and it's always been working perfectly. Here dunc writes about using gdm for login, but I really don't want to use it! Or did anybody find out, that this is necessary??
That's all I know being relevant for this...
    root:
18:45:43.359 JACK was started with PID=4601.
/dev/shm/jack-0 already exists, but is not a directory!
    cannot create server sockets
    cannot create engine
    18:45:43.449 JACK was stopped successfully.
I found some hints about configuring the fstab. Mine looks like that right at the moment
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information

I found some lines to be added like
    shmfs /dev/shm shm defaults 0 0
or doing something in /dev/shm, as mentioned here, but look:
    $ pwd
    /dev/shm
    $ ls -la
    insgesamt 80

    Seems to be fine, right?
I don't get it, is there a big bug or am I too blind?
Let's do it like this, if I get it running again with your help, maybe I'll provide a link of my recordings Hopefully you won't hate me afterwards But might take a while
Thanx for any help or idea!

I honestly have no idea. I mean, everything else seems to work without it, and so does jack if you use GDM or KDM. I don't know enough about PAM to know what it does, other than "makes jack work for me".
So, now I do have to do some recording for you ... Let's start with an older one of my side project

    Have fun!
Cool. Not my sort of thing, really, but I'm always amazed at what you can do with a home PC these days. It's not all that long since the very best you could hope for at home was a little 4-track cassette recorder.

  • [SOLVED]amdcccle won't start

Hi all, before I explain my problem, I have spent the last 6 hours searching google and these forums for the answer, so I apologize if I have missed the solution somewhere.
Its 1:38pm here in Australia, and since I woke up today I have been trying to install the drivers for my amd 6950 2gb card.
I "finished" my first ever arch linux install last night, and installed the catalyst and catalyst-utils packages from the unnofficial repositories as I thought they were the newest. They seem to have worked, I am now in xfce4 wm(not as my environment), and everything is working great. However, because my monitor uses hdmi, whenever I do a fresh install of drivers the screen is scaled down by 15%, as this is for some reason a default in the driver. I usually just start amdcccle as root and fix it, but amdcccle won't start.
tl;dr, amdccle won't start either through terminal or started through xfce app menu. Do I need to reinstall all my drivers or just install the amdccle package. sudo pacman -S amdcccle says "cannot find package".
I am loving the speed of arch linux so far, not having 100+ apps that I don't use is nice.
    EDIT: sorry, forgot the error:
amdcccle: error while loading shared libraries: libQtGui.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    Edit2: Wow, I am tired. I just realized I hadn't installed Qt.
If an admin/mod wants to delete this thread then go for it, otherwise Ill i leave the solution to the problem here for other new users like myself.
    To fix just run
    pacman -S qt

I followed wiki for uninstall catalyst, reboot, then clean install of catalyst, reboot, it's the same.
But I've found a way to make it work : disable lxdm and reboot.
Then I remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb at each boot, before running startx. Then I'm able to open amdcccle, check configuration, fglrxinfo gives :
    [jledun@io0 ~]$ fglrxinfo
    display: :0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 8650G
OpenGL version string: 4.3.12614 Compatibility Profile Context 13.25.18
If I reboot again, the problem appears again, then I kill X, remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb again and it works.
I'm going to see if the problem is the same with razor-qt.

  • [solved] KDEmod4 won't start

    Hey everyone!
I was just installing Arch on my Desktop few moments ago and decided to give Kdemod4 a try,
but it simply won't start up showing me this error: (in a xtermlike environment)
Could not start kstartupconfig4. Check your installation.
Wondering how to solve this problem...?
So far concerning the installation everything worked quite fine...XServer works with xterm and hal fam and kdm were added to the Daemons array in rc.conf...
After I get back to the tty I also get these lines:
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/Type1, removing from list!
/usr/bin/startkde: line11: /usr/bin/kcheckrunning: File or directory not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line36: /usr/bin/kde4-config: File or directory not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line86: /usr/bin/kstartupconfig4: File or directory not found
But: when I DO have those files, namely kcheckrunnig, kde4-config and kstartupconfig4, in /usr/bin...
So seems like something went wrong there...it's just that I can't figure out what...
Thank for your help in advance!

I suggest gamin instead of fam, and /etc/inittab to start kdm/gdm instead of rc.conf
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/FAM
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Login_manager
The kdm-thing does not work so far...but I'm workin' at it
    Concerning fam...I'll try that
onna assume you have nvidia since it rejects type1 paths...
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA
basically make sure theres no type1 path or dri stuff as the wiki says.
Nope it's an Ati Radeon HD3850 I got there...
Make sure you read about hotplugging if you havent...
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging
    Got that...
Make sure you installed kdemod correctly...
    http://chakra-project.org/download-kdemod.html
Is installed correctly and working with catalyst - didn't work with xf86-video-radeon(hd)...
Still as you can see there are some warnings in the Xorg logfile I have to work on.
Though kdemod4 now starts up upon an 'startx' I won't mark the thread 'solved' till I got everything working correctly...
Any suggestions upon improvement of my configurations are highly appreciated!
Thanks for your help so far AND in advance!

  • Itunes won't open unless I disconnect the network/internet, why?

My Itunes won't open (after clicking the icon and seeing it running in task manager) until I disconnect the internet connection.  How do I fix this?  I have the latest version of Itunes and Quicktime installed.

    a few questions before proceeding.
are you getting an error message? if so, what does it say? include error message numbers if you're getting any.
or are you getting no error messages whatsoever when you try to launch itunes?
if you're getting no error messages whatsoever, do you just see the wee hourglass for a few seconds, and then nothing? if so, do you also have Norton Internet Security 2005 installed on that PC?
or are you seeing a brief "flash" of the itunes license screen (and then nothing)? if so, do you also see similar behavior when you try to launch your QuickTime?
or is it more that your itunes library screen appears, and then "freezes" (even without an ipod connected), and when you check on that in Task Manager, it says "Not responding" in there?

It doesn't crash when I run wpa_supplicant in the terminal, though, just throws an error. I am using an rt2860 wireless chipset, so I just had to downgrade to the staging drivers, as the new mainline drivers don't work for this chipset. I have no idea if that could cause this problem or not. It connects to wired ethernet just fine, though; I don't have access to an unsecured wireless network to see if it would connect properly without going through WPA.

I have an rt2860 in my EeePC and am on the current kernel (3.1.7-1) and have no issues with either using the rt2800pci driver (and wlan0 as the interface) or wicd and WPA2...
If you are running a stock kernel, I would try using the correct driver for the card and see where that takes you.

  • [SOLVED] Apache won't start; missing 4 modules

    Hello,
Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but httpd won't start after an update.
First it claims each of these 4 modules are missing:
    LoadModule authz_default_module modules/mod_authz_default.so
    LoadModule authn_default_module modules/mod_authn_default.so
    LoadModule disk_cache_module modules/mod_disk_cache.so
    LoadModule mem_cache_module modules/mod_mem_cache.so
If I comment these in httpd.conf, the error changes to
httpd: Configuration error: No MPM loaded.
    Can anyone please help?
    Thanks!

You might want to do that. that is why pacdiff offers the merge option.
PS: Here is an overview of the changes between 2.2 and 2.4: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/upgrading.html
This solved my problem. Thank you for all your help :-)

  • [Solved] X won't function after I log out of a DM (Awesome, i3)

I boot into arch, and I log in the tty. I hit startx, in my .xinitc there's the line:
    exec awesome
    Or
    exec i3
I manage to log in to awesome/i3.
If for any reason I want to change to another  desktop manager (i3, awesome always).
I close down my current Desktop Manger ( '$mod+shift+e' for i3 or '$mod+shift+q' for awesome ) <--< Those shortcuts are supposed to log me out of the desktop but not killing x (at least that's what I read)
And I find myself in tty1 which is alright...
Now if I try to run another desktop (awesome OR i3)
I get an error about display not found, if I do a
    xkill -a
in order to startup x again, it gives me an error about display not found (or something like that)
Bottom line is, I can't start X for a second time OR start a Desktop environment for a second time. (same thing was happening with Display Managers in use)
How do I fix this? (I'm a total noob)

I do have the proprietary drivers installed for AMD indeed and I do need them since I run 3D stuff including blender.
The log file of the session I'm currently in is this:

The reason I'm attaching an older log is because I just found a temporary solution... or at least it seems like it.
As I was trying to find out what's wrong I activated the AMD card before this last restart... now I can run my WM for a second time.
So it's when I have the Intel card enabled that this happens. Hope the logs will be helpful to find what the problem is and how to fix it.
    This is a sub question:
I tried to setup a login manager so i can have it easy... but as soon as I activate one of the login managers... Arch seems to get stack on boot ... blah blah [Ok] even tho it says that the Manager has started.
I can still go to another tty tho but again I can't start X (or at least that was before I change to AMD card, I'll try again now) <----<< Still persists.

  • [SOLVED]NetworkManager won't work since updating to KDE 4.3.4

    Hello there,
I'm running Arch64 on Qosmio X300 notebook. I have just updated to KDE 4.3.4 and since the update the NetworkManager won't connect to my wifi (I haven't tried wired yet). I use following packages for NetworkManager and KNetworkManager applet
    kdeplasma-applets-networkmanager 1047027-1
    networkmanager 0.7.2-1
There seems to be nothing strange in the daemons.log, but the KNMgr tray icon keeps saying "Networking information not available" and when I click it I get "Network Management Disabled" instead of the usual menu. I still can configure network manually and wicd is also working fine.
I remember putting my notebook to suspend-to-disk by mistake instead of shutting it down right after the update, so that's when it might have gone crazy. I tried reinstalling NetworkManager and the KDE applet and googling around a bit, but nothing has helped so far...

NM is definitely running, "ps aux | grep Network" gives me
    root 1573 0.0 0.0 61976 3876 ? Ss 01:35 0:00 /usr/sbin/NetworkManager
    root 1589 0.0 0.0 68868 3176 ? S 01:35 0:00 /usr/sbin/nm-system-settings --config /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf
    madcat 1849 0.0 0.0 8360 976 pts/2 S+ 01:36 0:00 grep Network
I tried uninstall -reinstall method, but the plasma applet still sticks to the "Networking information not available" message.
This is how the NM related info in daemon.log looks like
