SOLVED: WiFi dropouts under Windows 7 on Retina Macbook Pro

I never found the solution to the problem but I found hints around the web. After hours of playing with router settings and driver settings, this problem is solved. Wanted to log down because I did many searches and did not find any clear guidelines. (I can find them when searching for what I now know is the answer)
Short answer: Disable 40MHz in the router. Use only 20MHz. (Not auto, not both).
Situation: I have to use Windows 7 as it's a work computer (for various reasons). At my home network (only - other places OK), I could never connect reliably to the wifi. Sometimes it would appear 'fast' (I live in China so nothing's every blistering) and sometimes I'd just get the yellow hat on my wifi bars indicating no connection.
I knew it was a problem with my computer/drivers because
Other hardware in the house (ipads, other windows computers, phones) all connected as one would expect to the internet.
My computer couldn't even get a good connection to the router (the config page). I.e. it was a LAN issue.
Manually setting some parts of the internet settings (e.g. IP address, DHCP server) did not help
What I tried
Cleaned out all the junk in the computer (there was an old Java vulnerability but not sure if that had any impact)
Removed some junk software
Stopped many services systematically (thinking they were blocking the connection before even my netstat software) - I was suspicious of some installed by my bank (remember where I live)
Changing some wireless adapter settings. E.g. changed in AP mode 'higher performance' to 'broader compatibility'.
Upgraded router firmware, using a fairly normal ASUS RT-12N, but very old firmware
Final solution: I had read somewhere something about Apple wifi hardware and bluetooth interfereing. even though I have no bluetooth hardware, I thought it might be a cause. So I set the router to 20MHz only rather than 40 and 20 simultaneously.
Results:
Stable connection (1 day uptime so far)
Much higher bandwidth (about double previously... i.e. 500-800KB/s, which is fast for where I live)
Lower latency (quicker loads of some previously slow pages
Obviously I have only tested this on one computer. Hope this works for you.

When you drag the slider on the partition side, that was all you needed - it should be 40-60GB at least.
The disc I assume was physical retail etc and because you don't have an internal DVD you had to put USB-DVD support software on a USB flash drive.
You downloaded the Windows Support Software package as well, which needs to be run and installed on USB FAT as well.

  • Install Windows 8 on Retina Macbook Pro

    Greetings,
I have a Retina Macbook Pro and is wanting to install Windows 8 on it, because some games aren't available for the Mac. So I was wondering if Apple has finished updating the Mac so that it could run Windows 8 properly? Is it safe to install Windows 8 on my Mac?
Thanks for the help in advance.

Boot Camp isn't compatible with Windows 8 at the moment. However, some new Macs have got a special OS X version with a Boot Camp Assistant version that mentions Windows 8, but Apple hasn't released Boot Camp drivers for Windows 8, so you have to wait for the next update, 10.8.3.
If you want to use Windows now, install Windows 7. Also, it will work better than Windows 8 on your Mac. I'm referring to the Modern UI, because you may be uncomfortable with this interface

  • Problems installing windows on new retina macbook pro

Hi i am having problems installing windows on the latest retina macbook pro, I end up getting an error , cant install windows on this GPT partition style. I have tried booting into windows , and EFI, but it all ends up with the same error. Please HELP.

Did you use Boot Camp Assistant to partition the drive? If you want both Windows and Mac OS X on your Mac that is what you have to do.
If you only want Windows then you can install it by itself but you have to delete all partitions on the drive and format it NTSF from inside the Windows installer or a third party Disk Management/Partitioning/Formatting program.

  • Retina Macbook Pro 13" on Windows 8 Wifi Stops Receiving Data

    Hello!
I am running a Retina Macbook Pro 13" with Windows 8 Bootcamp. Recently I have discovered that my laptop internet stops working. When I boot it up in windows I will be able to use the internet for an average of around 30 seconds before it stops loading pages but it is still connected to the network. The only way I can actually use the internet is if I keep reconnnecting to my WiFi network every minute or so.
Can anyone help me with this issue?

I'm having a similar issue on my brand new MacBook Pro Retina 15". Internet seems to run fine on my windows side, but when I bootcamp into Windows 7, using my ethernet adapter, downloads seem to only get between 80mb-200mb done before it just stops, and I have to restart. I can browse the internet completely fine (and quickly) but downloading large files seems to cause an issue.
I had to download a Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet driver to get the adapter to work, and I'm wondering if perhaps I have the wrong driver? It's weird that it works though....I also downloaded 7.5GB of Team Fortress 2 seemingly fine the first night, but I think thats because Steam is able to force a reconnect even if it stops working.
Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

  • Retina MacBook Pro Trackpad in Windows 8

Hello, and apologies if this has been answered anywhere, I've been digging for hours and to no avail.
I just recently picked up the new Retina MacBook Pro, and I'm having issues with the trackpad in boot camped Windows 8. For reference, the trackpad worked fine in Windows 7, and I used the same Windows Support drivers that Boot Camp downloaded for both Windows 7 and Windows 8.
The issue manifests itself as such:
Windows receives no input from Trackpad at all
2 "Touchpads" appear in Device Manager in Windows 8
Both touchpads have yellow yield sign indicating on further inspection "driver installed improperly"
So far I've tried the following:
    Uninstall and re-scan for devices
Reinstall by running repair with boot camp utility
Older versions of the driver in boot camp
Running the individual boot camp driver directly (results in "you need to run 64 bit version of DPInst.exe"
Extracting boot camp driver archive, replacing DPInst.exe with a 64 bit version, running DPInst.exe as well as re-archiving and running the driver
Checking online for additional drivers, including Microsoft's auto-check functionality
Each of these methods have resulted in the same thing, 2 touchpads appearing with "incorrectly installed drivers." I'm at a total loss, if anyone has had any success conquering this issue, or if you've simply been able to use your Trackpad on your RMBP, please share your steps!
    Cheers.

To make the trackpad work. You need to install trackpad++
(http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4967-trackpad-control-module.html), it will enable the trackpad driver on boot camp. After you install the trackpad++, trackpad++ will complain something. ingnore it.  You should be able to enable trackpad. And you can now even uninstall the  trackpad++, the trackpad will sill work.
brightness, what graphics card are you using? It might be due to the auto adjusting brightness running there. You can go to your power options, edit the one you are using  (Change plan settings >> Change advanced power settings) and look for Batteries >> Enable adaptive brightness and disable the one you are using. After that, the scrollbar for adjusting brightness in power options should work again.
bluetooth connection is incredibly unreliable/intermittent when in Windows (I run Windows 7 64-bit and Boot Camp 4.0, and got both devices connected without any trouble via Bluetooth).

After much testing, I have found the cause of lagging/jumpiness on the Bluetooth Magic Mouse and Magic TrackPad in Boot Camp. Hopefully this will help others:
The drivers for the Broadcom 802.11n Wireless Adapter have a setting called "Bluetooth Collaboration" that is Disabled by default. Enabling this option removes the problem instantly. My Magic Trackpad now works flawlessly, even if I stand 6 metres from the machine. It now works just as well as under Mac OS. The setting can be found under:
Control Panel > Device Manager > Network Adapters > Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter (right click and choose "Properties".
Under the "Advanced" tab, highlight the setting named "Bluetooth Collaboration", then change it to Enable. Then click OK.
I narrowed the problem down to the wireless card by disabling ALL startup services and processes for Windows, then re-enabling one by one.
As soon as I enabled the Windows Wireless Service, the problem came back.
Similarly, disabling the Wireless Card inside the Network and Sharing Center (or Device Manager) removes the problem.
This led me to believe it must be a driver issue with the wireless card, since the problem didn't occur with the Magic TrackPad under Mac OS, or on my mother's Windows 7 64-bit computer.
So when I went into the Driver Properties to check for an update, I found this setting about Bluetooth Collaboration.
All Apple notebooks use the Broadcom card (and have done for years), so this driver is installed for almost anybody using Boot Camp on an Apple notebook. I'd assume this problem would affect anybody using Boot Camp + wifi + a Bluetooth device.

  • Trouble installing Windows 8.1 on MacBook Pro Retina mid 2014

    Hi everyone
I recently bought a MacBook Pro Retina (mid 2014, 15", 2.8GHz, 1TB SSD) and wanted to install Windows 8.1 on it via bootcamp.
I have an official .ISO package of Windows 8.1 (it's x64, I checked), got it from MS Dreamspark as a student, and a valid serial number for it, of course.
Burned the image on a 16gb flash drive via bootcamp and proceeded to install. When asked by windows installer which partition to install on, selected bootcamp and clicked 'format', as it was recommended to do in various instructions on the internet (as it wouldn't install without formatting, I tried). The installation went good and finished, but immedeatly after that the installer gave me a notification "Impossible to update computer loading configuration, installation cancelled" (maybe it's not exactly like that, translated as accurately as I could, I'm installing windows in Russian).
I tried it twice, each time re-burning the installation drive. Got the same error each time.
All the software (OS X, bootcamp, etc.) is up to date, the macbook shouldn't have any problems as it was bought just a few days ago.
How can I solve this problem?

  • Installed Windows 8.1 on Retina Macbook Pro - Many issues

I just recently downloaded the Windows 8.1 .iso file from Microsoft's website. My school got it for me and other members of my club for free so I don't have any install disks or anything like that. I used the Bootcamp Assistant to burn the .iso file to an external hard drive, let it install, and started it up. I'm running it on a mid-2012 15" retina Macbook Pro. Here are some problems I'm encountering. If anyone could help solve any of them, It'd be greatly appreciated.
First off, when I set the resolution to 2880x1800, most windows and icons are sized normally. However, the taskbar is absolutely tiny and some text (like the desktop icon text) is also very small. Any other resolution makes everything look distorted and blurry.
I can't connect to the internet. It doesn't detect any wireless networks at all even though I know there are many in the area.
The sound only works through headphones. Not through the speakers.
Some text is crisp and clear (like menu titles) but other times it's very pixelated.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Will upgrading the nVidia driver in Windows 7 on my Retina MacBook Pro eliminate the ability for Windows to scale resolutions?

Got my Retina MacBook Pro a couple days ago, and at first after installing Windows 7 the resolutions scaled fine. I imagine that the issue started after updating the nVidia drivers to the latest (313.95 beta at the time) and now my resolutions no longer scale, they show as an IPS monitor normally would; at actual size relative to the native resolution.
Can anyone offer any insight? 2880x1800 looks awesome... but I need the resolution to scale.

I solved the issue. Upgrading the nVidia drivers doesn't make any difference except to optimize the graphics card more and more. There are scaling settings in the nVidia control panel that affect the scaling (or lack thereof) when switching resolutions.
nVidia Control Panel > Display Heading > Adjust Desktop Size and Position > Set Scaling Mode to "Full-Screen"
I highly recommend upgrading the nVidia drivers however, especially if you're a gamer, the optimizations they add each driver update can make some dramatic improvements.

  • No Trackpad / Keyboard on Windows 7 Installation on mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro

    Hello,
Although there is a similar thread regarding this  --  this applies to a newly released mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro and the solution posted in the original thread does not work for this newer model.
I am attempting to install Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro.  (Running Mavericks 10.9.5)  I Have both an original Windows 7 Install DVD and a downloaded ISO file as well.
PLEASE NOTE:  That because I have need for multiple partitions on the SSD drive, I am not able to use Boot Camp Assistant to do the actual install.  I have accomplished this a number of times in the past without any issues during or after the install.  I have an MS-DOS(FAT) partition ready to go.
When I restart from the Windows 7 install DVD I get to the "Choose Language" screen and I have no trackpad or keyboard.  A wired USB Mouse does not work either
I am not able to create an install USB drive for this model because Boot Camp Assistant gets to the "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple" task it gives an error message "Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server"  (NOTE: Using Boot Camp Assistant to ONLY "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple" as I get the same error message when attempting to do that.
It is my understanding based on the Apple article   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634  that I need to download the driver software directly from Apple with the link they provide.  I DID successfully download the Windows support software from Apple following the instructions in that article.  However, I am not aware of any way to include that downloaded software when using Boot Camp Assistant to create a USB install drive.
I tried the trick with the USB drive as explained in apple article  http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4599  but even with a freshly formatted MS-DOS(FAT) USB drive in the USB port on the left of the MacBook Pro and the Apple USB Optical Drive plugged into the USB port on the right side of the MacBook Pro, I still have no Trackpad or keyboard when I get to the first screen of the Windows installation.
I spent the last two days searching posts here and in general and only end up more baffled than before . . .
I am as positive as possible that the USB drives I am using are USB 2 and NOT USB 3.  Although I guess that does not matter if I can't use Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows installer that includes the Windows drivers for the MacBook Pro Hardware . . .
Some of the posts suggest that the Windows drivers from Apple need to be included on a USB install drive created with Boot Camp Assistant.  That appears to be impossible at the moment if the Software Update Server does not contain them.  I am confused as to why the are available directly from Apple  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1721 but they are not available when using Boot Camp Assistant????
Am I missing something???  Is this just a matter of waiting for Apple to add the necessary drivers to the Software Update server???  (It has only been two months since this MacBook Pro was released)
Has anyone successfully installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a mid-2014 MacBook Pro running Mavericks???
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated . . .
    John

    1. I have tried copying the Keyboard/Trackpad/Mouse drivers to the $WinPEDriver$ directory with mixed success on a 2012 MBP.
    2. My experience is based on a 2013 rMBP. You may be able to use an Apple USB Keypad/Mouse to better success.
    3. See http://www.macworld.com/article/2460820/macbook-pro-mid-2014-review-minor-update -offers-slightly-better-cpu-performance.html for HW differences between the two machines.
    4. If you have access to a 2013 rMBP, I can suggest trying to build the USB on that and working with the USB to see if you can make it install Windows. the rMBP 2014 and rMBP 2013 have the same HW, except some CPU changes. You can also try building the USB at the nearest Apple store, if possible.
    5. There is a section in AutoUnattend.xml, which is supposed to install all drivers in $WinPEDriver$ (see this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2686316 )

  • Is it possible to install Windows 7 on Retina MacBook with a shared CD drive?

My school provides Windows 7 Ultimate upgrades to students
My friend installed Windows 7 normally even though it's technically an upgrade (burned the .img file to a DVD using Disk Utility and installed it through the Boot Camp Assistant tool in Snow Leopard)
I own a 2008 MacBook which has an optical drive
I own 1, 2 GB thumb drive and 1, 4 GB thumb drive
Is it possible to install Windows 7 through my Retina MacBook Pro through a shared CD connection with my 2008 MacBook?
I tried using the Boot Camp Assitant tool.
I burned the Windows 7 upgrade .img file to a DVD with Disk Utility just like my friend
I copied that DVD as a .cdr file to my Retina MacBook using the shared CD connection and Disk Utility, and changed the file extension to .iso
With the Boot Camp Assistant, I set-up my 4 GB thumb drive
When I get to the "Create a Partition for Windows" screen and I press install, I get the message "The installer disc could not be found".
The DVD is in my 2008 MacBook and I mounted it on the Retina MacBook. The 4 GB Windows set-up thumb drive is connected to the Retina MacBook.
I'm confused as to what I'm doing wrong.
    Any help is appreciated.
