well, as im not that geeky i dont care if its overkill or no , at the minute its very very handy and quick , mutch quicker to use terminal ( press F1) tilda pops out, type in wiki keyword pres enter and thats it. for me its time saving "module" i should say.  and on another side ... mysql, apache is for web pages as well , and sometimes i like to fiddle about with web pages (i went to colledge to study IT and web design many many years ago) so i still have a bit of atraction to web design ( once in a blue moon ) so one shot two rabbits .

You'd put it in your shellrc file
Every guide has to have some starting assumptions.  We all (I suspect) assumed you knew how to use shell functions - not all archers do, but then not all archers want to have handy commands to use in the terminal.  As you asked for a way to do this in the terminal, I gathered you use the terminal regularly - and I can't imagine someone using the terminal regularly and not knowing how to edit the shellrc files.
So step by step: open ~/.bashrc (if you use bash) in your favorite text editor.  Paste one of the functions above into it.  (re)start your terminal.  Then you can type "wiki searchword".  Note each of the functions about work slightly differently, and all may need to be adjusted to do exactly what you want - but any of them should be a start.
As for asking simple questions - I think this forum is very welcoming to any level of question, as long as the person asking is willing to participate in the process and learn.
emm, thats the point... "handy commands to use in terminal" . I know how to edit things, but if no exponation  what file to edit - im pretty useless,, plus i know that terminal is linux main command window , so i need to utillise what is given to me by the system and its easy to use ( i use terminal more then file manager) because i know some commands and its quick easy and handy
barshrc i know this file and i have this file , and now i know where to put these command lines
Thank you , my search for other easy steps is over as long as it gives me what i want and if not, i will look for other options/improvents

  • How to get the Wiki search functionality working?

    hi,
Another Wiki question regarding the 7.1u1 Portal wiki functionality: What is necessary to get the wiki search functionality working? Right now when using the wiki search page all it does is return to the search form, no errors but no hits either. I guess some additional administrative work is needed to get search working?
    thanks, tom

haven't touched anything except for the wiki template jsps to change the design. it is a linux rh4 install. there are no communities on that server (yet), just the wiki portlet in a tab so far. is the wiki search dependent on the portal search server or totally separate (ie self contained wiki search)? any additional services or such that need to be started for it to work?

  • Wiki search: possible to search uploads and/or comments?

I'm trying to find out if there's a way to enable the wiki search to include the contents of uploaded files (like pdfs, docs, or xls) or the comments posted to various web pages. I could have sworn that I read this is possible, but I don't see any means of "triggering" this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How are you using this portlet? Are you
    (a) allowing users to enter criteria to do a search and
wanting the results page to group the results or
    (b) are you using it for automatically displaying content
    via auto query portlets?
Depending on your version of portal it maybe possible to get functionality similar to what you want with multiple custom search portlets on a page. Beware, in some versions of portal there are some issues when you put multiple search portlets on a page, as they dont work independently. Therefore its not guarenteed that the following suggestions will work, but its possibly worth a try.
    (a)
    - Create a results page and add 4 custom search portlets
    - Customize each portlet
    - Set the Portlet Title to be the grouping title
    i.e Categories
    - Set the portlet so it only searches for a single results
    type,
i.e. chose category for Content typee
    - For the results page option, choose 'Custom Page' and
select the same page (this ensures a search from this
portlet goes back to the same page).
    - Now set your portlet you are using to run the search
to display results on the results page you have just
    created
    - When you perform a search, the user is taken to your
results page and each portlet should take the search
criteria and display the results of each type
    - The next and previous buttons may not work independently
between the portlets depending on your versions, if this
is the case i would suggest turning the summary off in
    the portlets
    (b)
    - similar to a, but set all the 4 portlets to be auto
query and enter the criteria. Ensure the submission
form is not rendered below the results.
    Hope that helps

Then the problem probably lies with your .bashrc or your profile. Have you tried d2ogch3n's suggestion and copied a vanilla one to test if it is your bashrc?
Also, you would be doing everyone a favour if you followed the How To Post guidance:

  • [SOLVED] Wiki page for GPT disks and booting arch using UEFI

Hi guys, I am new to archlinux. I installed archlinux x86_64 just yesterday and I like its customisability. I also like arch wiki. Nowhere else have I seen such extensive documentation, especially about things like HAL, UDEV etc. with proper instructions. Thanks to all archers.
I have installed Archlinux x86_64 in my Dell India Studio 1537 laptop along with Windows 7 Professional x64. Both the OSes boot in UEFI-GPT setup (my UEFI is tianocore.sourceforge.net EDK DUET UEFI64 firmware booting from USB). I boot Archlinux using my own compiled grub2-bzr compiled for both BIOS and UEFI-x64. I have a 1 MB BIOS Boot Partition as required by grub2 for BIOS-GPT booting. My Archlinux system can boot both from bios and from uefi, while Windows can boot only using UEFI.
The official Archlinux installation guide talks about only MBR (or msdos disklabel) partitions and booting from BIOS based systems. With 2TB drives becoming common place and UEFI being implemented (search for Phoenix SecureCore Tiano's 1 second POST operation), I think a proper wiki page describing differences between MBR and GPT, why GPT is better, how to setup arch to boot from GPT. Another page describing steps to setup arch to boot from UEFI (either as a separate page or as an extension of GRUB2 wiki page) is also needed.
Some details regarding Pure GPT (not a Hybrid GPT/MBR setup) and/or UEFI setups :-
    Partitioning tools -
GNU Parted for filesystem related tasks
    GPT fdisk tool - http://rodsbooks.com/gdisk/ , http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ ,  pacman -S gdisk (in extra repo) - for non-filesystem related tasks
util-linux-ng fdisk does not support GPT disks
Bootloader - GRUB2 - vanilla grub-legacy does not support GPT and does not support UEFI (Fedora's patched grub-legacy does support both GPT and UEFI) and syslinux does not support GPT (I may be wrong here - seems a gptmbr of syslinux does help in booting from gpt but not sure).
For GRUB2 - Need BIOS Boot Partition to embed GRUB2's core.img in GPT disks - size about 1 MB max - no filesystem
In GPT fdisk partition type code - EF02
In GNU Parted or GParted - bios_grub flag on
For UEFI-GPT booting this special partition is not needed as no embedding takes place. This is needed only in case of BIOS-GPT booting.
Incase of custom kernel configuration - enable CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION for GPT support
CONFIG_EFI for UEFI support (for UEFI even above option required)
CONFIG_EFI_VARS for UEFI Runtime Variables support (optional)
Note: Although GPT is part of UEFI specification, a UEFI system is not needed to boot from/use GPT. BIOS based GPT booting is possible with GRUB2 or Fedora's patched grub-legacy (but not vanilla grub-legacy provided by archlinux). It is also possible to boot Linux in UEFI-MBR setup (again using grub2) but I have not tried it.
Even without UEFI and less than 2TB harddrives, GPT based partitioning has many advantages - secondary GPT header and Partition table, CRC32 checksums. Unique Disk GUID and Filesystem-independent Unique Partition GUIDs, multiple primary partitions (default is 128 partitions, but it can be changed). The only problamatic OS is Windows which does not allow GPT booing unless one has UEFI based system. It allows only UEFI-GPT or BIOS-MBR setups. In linux it just depends on how the bootloader is configured - not a problem with grub2.
I also propose that incase of Auto-prepare Hard Drive, the installer default to GPT for "archlinux only" installs ( ie no dual-boot or triple-boot etc.).
I did not use the official archlinux iso but used archboot 2010.04 R3 as it gave an option of installing to GPT and also provided GRUB2 during bootloader install. I have never edited any wiki page before, thats why I request some one else to start a wiki page with the information given above.
I don't know whether this is the right place, but any Windows (Vista or 7 x64 versions) and Linux dual-boot user who has UEFI-based system with GPT partitioning and wants to get rid of Hybrid MBR setup (to boot Windows) can follow this post http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lofive … hp/t186440 (outside this forum) - this link describes the way to make Windows boot natively in UEFI-GPT setup. After doing this one can install arch using GRUB2 compiled for UEFI x86_64, and Windows will also see

Welcome to arch, skodabenz! Offering documentation on third post - all thumbs up
You could start the wiki page in your user-space with what you have, and then invite others to join working on it. Just register a wiki account, navigate to the page you want to start, for example:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:skodabenz/GPT
and click on "edit this page".
As noted in the other thread, arch's legacy grub is patched for gpt support. I don't know about UEFI, but you can always open a bug report asking for the patches from fedora to be included.
edit: the page from Rod Smith is a great resource. I was absolutely terrified at first by all this screwed up GPT/MBR stuff when I tried triple-booting Arch, Win and OS x, but he really does a great job explaining what it is all about.

  • [SOLVED] Looking for a terminal command or key binding to exit Openbox

I've searched the forums and googled, but I haven't been able to find the answer.  I'm sure I've missed it somewhere...
I start my openbox session with 'startx' from the command line. I would like a terminal command or a key-binding to be able to exit openbox and return to the command line. I just don't like using the menu with my notebooks touchpad.  I just can't seem to figure out what command is used. The menu.xml file lists the command as "Exit", but typing that in a terminal just exits the terminal.
    Any help appreciated.

  • [SOLVED] Vim search history inserts A

    Hello,
I have the following problem with Vim:
when I press the up arrow in search mode (/<Up>), Vim switches to the insert mode and enters the letter A in a new line above the cursor. When I press /<Down>, the same happens, only the letter is B.
Surprisingly, arrows work just fine for browsing command history both in Vim and in Bash.
All mappings for arrows in my .vimrc are commented out, I've deleted the appropriate files in ~/.vim/view and in ~/.vim-tmp where I store backups and such.
I use Sakura but the same happens in urxvt and in gnome-terminal. In Vim, term is set to xterm.
    Can you help me please?

Thanks but as I wrote I was more interested in using DuckDuckGo.com to perform the search in order to avoid the 30 seconds delay between searches. That, and the arch-firefox-search package doesn't show up in my firefox3 (installed from the AUR.)
The "Mycroft Project" site has search engine plugins for both IE and Firefox (and other web browsers), and you can also create new ones there.
Here is the list of search engine plugins for the Arch Linux forums.
The second one uses Google for searching the Arch forums and should work with IE.
The third one is the one I just made; it lets you search the Arch forums with DuckDuckGo, but will probably not work with IE because I selected the "POST" method instead of "GET".

  • [SOLVED]Chromium Error in terminal, chromium running slow.

    Problem:

The terminal launches Chromium, and starts up fine. The problem I am having is a speed issue which may or may not be related to what the
terminal is showing. Loading sites (pnc.com, ign.com) takes more than around (45 to 130 seconds).
I did a search on google using the exact error message, which took me to the developers chat between the error code, I also searched their bug reporting lists to find that
there wasn't anything relating to this particular message. I searched the ArchLinux forums and came across the Segfaults thread, and followed the instruction of upgrading (which seemed to fix their problem, not mine.)
    The actions I have taken:
    Install Chromium using pacman,
Upgraded to the most current releases (pacman -Syu, pacman -S chromium).
If anyone could point me in the right direction on either fixing this particular error, or just what I could do to speed up Chromium in general I would be in great debt.
I think it might just be the way I installed arch. But haven't had any problems with firefox (except for flash).

    Welcome to the forums.
That specific message is harmless and can safely be ignored. Some additional info can be found here if you really want to know more about it.
Now for the issue at hand. Try disabling the DNS prefetching setting (Tools --> Options --> Under the hood).

EDIT: okay I've edited this a few times.  I had it working, but I couldn't figure out why.  Now I have: the line matching needs the apparently needs the newline and tab two unknown characters before the $.
D'Oh, I think I just figured it out: It matches correctly, but in the non-matching case the quote is still optional and the expression matches *any* character other than the punctuation, which includes the quote.  So the line matches both cases.  Here's what you probably want:
    $ sed '/[.?!]"*$/{N;s/\n\t/ /}' y
man, why not Great-grandfather?" I've never
    $ sed '/[^.?!"]$/{N;s/\n\t/ /}' y

OK, I just tried it thus
    sed '/[^.?!]["]*.$/{N;s/\n\t/ /}' y
which works for me, but I'm not understanding what is going on (I'm keeping the ["] because in the real version within a script it is ["'] but I can't get a ' to be acceptable within this command line test).  The ? is there, the " is there, so what is the . immediately before the $ matching to?
    This works too
    sed '/[^.?!"]\+$/{N;s/\n\t/ /}' y
, which I think I will go with as it conforms to the actual data patterns its likely to find.  The form without the \+ is just matching to the " and not to the ?.  I prefer to have it match to both if they are there, and the sentence terminator must always be there.  I haven't used sed very much before, it certainly seems to have its own slant on things.  I thank you very much for your help.
