[solved] Window Maker

I installed Window Maker. According to the Window Maker archwiki I created a GNUstep directory in my home directory and added 'export GNUSTEP_USER_ROOT="~/GNUstep"' to .baschrc. When I run the Window Maker settings installation program (wmaker.inst) I get the following message:
Installing WindowMaker 0.95.4 for current user...
Directory specified in GNUSTEP_USER_ROOT environment variable does not exist
I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

To possibly help other folks I found that placing this
export GNUSTEP_USER_ROOT="/home/bloodaxe/GNUstep"
in ~/.bashrc  worked for me. Whereas the line given in the guide
export GNUSTEP_USER_ROOT="~/GNUstep"
did not.
I think it was me that put that in the wiki. I do remember something about "~" not working for something, but I'm surprised the above didn't work. I mean, it should be exactly the same...
Although I don't use Window Maker at the moment, I just did a quick test: It should work without quotation marks:
export GNUSTEP_USER_ROOT=~/GNUstep
I'll go ahead and make that small change to the wiki. Feel free to make any other changes.
I did give windowmaker-git a quick try last night. It appears that, in the future, you won't need to set any variables yourself. Which is kind of odd, because I didn't have to set any variable myself back when I used Window Maker in 2001.
EDIT: Even better, this should work:
export GNUSTEP_USER_ROOT="${HOME}/GNUstep"

Everything from here down is obsolete.

Go to Control Panel >Firewall>Advanced Settings. Then click
Action>Export policy to make a copy of your current policy in case you want to restore it. Then click
    Action>Restore Default Policy.
This should allow you to use Windows Update.

Can you run Window Maker with new xorg?
Each time I try to run it I see just window with information that Window Maker segfaulted.
I deleted GNUstep in my home, then called wmaker.conf, but that didn't help.
Yesterday I updated Window Maker, because new package appeared, but that also didn't help.
    Any ideas?

yup, wmaker and xorg both from testing work together

    Hi Mac-oholic,
If you install the X11SDK.pkg package with Xcode you may be able to compile Window Maker but I've not done it so I don't know how difficult it is.
One thing that I know works is to install Fink and get Fink to install Window Maker with the command, "fink install windowmaker".

  • [SOLVED] Windows Update not working after Cloning Hard Disk!

Lenovo T61p with Intel Turbo Memory - Cloning HDD with Advanced Format (4K Cluster) HDD
I have been beating my head against my desk for the past day trying to figure out the problems I am having.
I have a Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate Installation
I cloned my old 100GB HDD onto a 500GB HDD to increase space however after doing so I am unable to update windows, turn windows defender on, or install any Microsoft Products. I am even unable to install WindowsActivationUpdate or Microsoft Security Essentials.
I have tried many FixIt tools to no avail.
    I have run SFC /SCANNOW
    I have run CHKDSK
    I am stumped.
    ****RESOLUTION****
After doing some digging I found the solution. Since I had cloned the drive, the old AHCI driver wasn't updating Windows with the correct sector size. Updating the AHCI driver with the latest from Intel solved all the issues I was having.

But it still says Windows 7 Activation was Successful.

I only discovered this problem a month after replacing my system HDD with an ssd Drive for a Vista sp2 Dell studio 1735 . But in my case all drivers  were  up to date. However this post triggered the right path to a solution. Though it is more
a workaround ... . Perhaps this will help others, an even more perhaps bring a microsoft engineer to make a small adaption to the vista windows update tool ....
So the problem seems that Windows Update checks for its datastore if the file is alined with the HDD underneath. But it seems that this check fails for an ssd with a 4K sector size.
Lucky I had another HDD in my laptop, which is required for this work around to work :-(. So the following shows the problem (and I think Windows Update does an alike test).
cd \windows\SDold\DataStore (so use cd \windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore if you didn't try the "ren" action yet as mentioned in many posts)
esentutl /g DataStore.edb  -> (result) Operation terminated with error -583 (JET_errSectorSizeNotSupported, The physical sector size reported by the disk subsystem, is unsupported by ESE for a specific file type.) after 0.15 seconds.
    cd D:\        (to a 512 byte sectored HDD )
esentutl /g C:\Windows\SDold\DataStore\DataStore.edb     -> (succeeds! normal verification output)
So I tried (the junction tool can be downloaded from sysinternals):
    net stop cryptsvc
    net stop wuauserv
    robocopy /mir C:\Windows\SDold\DataStore D:\DataStore
robocopy /mir C:\Windows\system32\catroot2 D:\catroot2   (I now think this is not needed, but I started with an Technet post (and many others ...) that put me on the esentutl track... , which is also why the "net stop cryptsvc" is present.)
    C:
    cd ..\SoftwareDistribution
    rmdir /s /q DataStore
    junction DataStore D:\DataStore
cd ..\system32   ( again not sure if needed, also counts for the next 2 commands).
    rmdir /s /q catroot2
    junction catroot2 D:\catroot2
    net start cryptsvc
    net start wuauserv
And windows update worked again ! Check the C:\windows\WindowsUpdate.log
Of course this is just a workaround, but perhaps this puts another searcher on the right track. And perhaps it makes a Microsoft engineer update the responsible code ... as to be aligned on disk does not seem crucial for the databases used for this "application"
Sorry had to remove links for sysinternals and cc734083(v=ws.10).aspx (esentutl, which is a vista specific command) both Microsoft links, as Microsoft has not yet verified my account ...

  • How to Solve Windows 8 Metro App Crash on Macbook Pro 2010 13"

    There is a known problem
    (See http://www.onebitzero.com/how-to-fix-metro-apps-from-crashing-under-nvidia-beta- driver-296-17-in-windows-8/ )
that many notebooks equipped with nVIDIA GPU and running Windows 8 will crash some Modern UI (Metro) apps,
including Game, Camera, Remote Desktop, ... apps.
My MacBook Pro 2010 13" has an nVIDIA GeForce 320M.
I installed Windows 8 Pro RTM gotten from DreamSpark Premium and Boot Camp Software 3.2 on my MacBook Pro.
Unfortunately, I met the Modern UI app crash problem.
I fought against this problem two days and almostly surrended.
    Unbelievablely, I could solve it.
Yes. We can simply solve the crash problem by installing the latest 301.42 driver download from nvidia.com.
But it is not perfect: we will find we can't adjust the brightness anymore.
I also tried many methods, including modifies .inf files and change permissions but all are failed.
Except one for which I got an idea from Windows Event Viewer.
I found I got an error event when I launched the problematic Modern UI app. For example,
"Faulting application name: wwahost.exe, version: 6.2.9200.16384, time stamp: 0x50107c6e
Faulting module name: nvd3dumx.dll, version: 8.17.11.9682, time stamp: 0x4b884f8a"
(Attention! The following steps are at your risks.
Or you may not try it.)
The steps to solve the crash problem and simultanously preserve the brightness adjustment function are:
    1. Download the latest 301.42 driver from nvidia.com. Then, click it to extract files to C:\
    and we don't install it.
    2. Copy the Boot Camp nVIDIA driver files from "13-inch MacBook Pro Mac OS X Install DVD,"
    ie. this folder:
    (DVD drive):\Boot Camp\Drivers\NVidia\Vista-Win7_64
    3. Replace the older nvd3dumx.dl_ with the newer one.
    I.e. overwrite
    Boot Camp\Drivers\NVidia\Vista-Win7_64\nvd3dumx.dl_
    by
    C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\301.42\WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver\nvd 3dumx.dl_
    4. Follow this tutorial to turn off driver integrity check:
    http://www.killertechtips.com/2009/05/05/disable-driver-signing-windows-7/
    and reboot.
    5. Install the modified driver by clicking
    Boot Camp\Drivers\NVidia\Vista-Win7_64\setup.exe
    6. Reboot your computer and good luck.

The method described above is too complex.
I found a more easy way to solve the Modern app crash problem.
That is to download the legacy driver 296.10 here
    http://www.geforce.com/drivers/beta-legacy
Unfortunately, 296.10 and 19x don't solve all problems on Windows 8:

  • [SOLVED] Windows 8.1, lost Arch boot loader, cannot reinstall or boot

    Hi all,
Apologies but I am only posting as I have exhausted my (admittedly quite limited) knowledge and have spent hours trying to get it back up and running but nothing seems to work at all. This will probably be quite long, apologies if there is something really obvious that I have missed on the Wiki or anywhere, but I'm only posting as I can't seem to get anywhere with it at all despite reading and trying.
Essentially I had a Toshiba Satellite p850-321 laptop (UEFI, secure boot off, fast boot off) which I had dual booting with Windows 8 and Arch using rEFInd. I then had several moments of madness, starting when for some reason - on very little sleep so didn't think - decided to upgrade Windows 8 to 8.1. Unsurprisingly (but a surprise for me at the time), it then booted straight into Windows 8.1, no rEFInd. In hindsight, it had probably just set itself as boot priority but I thought it had overwritten rEFInd with its own bootloader or set it back to default or something so started on a way to try and get it back.
I then spent many hours trying to get my old bootable Arch USB stick to work with no joy, updating it to the latest arch iso and all sorts. It eventually worked when I updated the laptop BIOS. Booted from the USB, chrooted into arch, reinstalled rEFInd, played around, eventually got it to reboot and display rEFInd but Arch wouldn't start. At this point I noticed that my fstab looked strange (devices/labels mixed up from what I expected), so followed the Beginner's Guide again and recreated the fstab. My disk is partitioned as follows (main partitions of note):
    /dev/sda2 - Windows EFI partition
    /dev/sda4 Windows 8.1
    /dev/sda6 arch swap partition (archswap)
    /dev/sda7 arch root partition (archroot)
    /dev/sda8 arch home partition (archhome)
Couldn't get rEFInd to work so decided to start again with gummiboot. Installed gummiboot, followed Beginner's Guide to install and configure it. Edited arch.conf and after having to mess about with the location of vmlinuz-arch.efi in the conf file, I have the options part looking like this:
    options        root=/dev/sda7 rw
Now gummiboot loads on startup but all I get on trying to load Arch from gummiboot is the dreaded:
ERROR: device '' not found. Skipping fsck
ERROR: Unable to find root device ''.
I've tried changing the root in options in arch.conf to UUID, PARTUUID and even different partitions (just to see what happened...) - the same. Is it likely to be due to me recreating the fstab and something is messed up there?
Another problem is that now, whatever I do, I cannot boot from the USB again to get in to even try to fix anything. The laptop on boot just hangs for a while and then loads the gummiboot from the disk drive rather than from the USB (I've set the boot priority, everything) and nothing will allow me to boot from the USB. That is probably a secondary issue, I can probably try to reinstall the BIOS again and see if that helps.
If anyone has had anything similar and has any solutions I'd be really grateful - anything. I don't mind being shown to be incredibly stupid, I get that a lot so have a lot of experience! - just anything that can get me back into Arch again without having to reinstall from scratch!
    Thanks.

Thanks for replying, very much appreciated. The partitions were numbered sequentially, I only posted up the partitions that I thought were of interest to the issue (which wasn't very helpful!). The partitions are as follows:
    Partition No     Type
    1                     Win Recover
    2                     EFI System (EFI partition)
    3                     Microsoft Reserved
4                     Microsoft Basic (Windows 8.1 installation)
    5                     Windows Recover
    6                     Linux Swap
7                     Microsoft Basic (Arch root partition)
8                     Microsoft Basic (Arch home partition)
    9                     Windows Recover
It looks like I have managed to solve it, but I admit I'm not sure what of the several changes I made that solved it. I managed to boot into the USB arch disk by resetting my BIOS back to defaults and then changing the boot order back, which was the only way it would boot the USB - without resetting back and putting the boot order back exactly how it was before it wouldn't boot from the USB. Anyway...
Checked the partitions with gdisk, no problems. I did sort the partitions as you mentioned, just in case. Changed the partition names using gdisk to the same names I had before (archroot, archhome, archswap). Changed the types from Microsoft Basic to Linux filesystem (partitions 7 and 8) and wrote the partition.
Mounted everything, chrooted, edited the gummiboot arch.conf file and noticed there were some strange characters in it, a forward slash before /root in the options for example. I had edited the arch.conf file from windows by booting into Windows, mounting the EFI partition (mountvol z: /s) and editing it that way, which would have messed up the formatting. It can't have only been that though as it wasn't booting anyway which is why I went into Windows to edit the file in the first place. Corrected the arch.conf file, rebooted and it booted. Some errors on boot which I need to correct but I can work on those as it boots into my arch installation.
So all solved. I thought I'd update just to say thanks for the advice and in case it helps anyone else in the future.

  • [SOLVED] Windows No Longer Editable

I'm having a problem with the Windows Forms Designer. I'm using a third party framework, MetroFramework to be exact.
All was going well, however now I'm not able to edit, add, remove, or do anything to the controls inside that window. Has anyone else had this issue with this framework, or is it just me?
    ========== EDIT ============
I've found a solution to the issue. I realized I didn't need every piece of the framework in the final product, so I removed all but the needed library. However, the MetroFramework.Design.dll is required for editing the form in the Forms Designer. Dunno
why, but if anyone else has this issue, just include this dll in the project's references, but not needed in the final build, unless you actually make calls to this library.

    Hi KalebKlein,
Since this forum is to discuss features of the Windows Forms designer inside of Visual Studio as well as custom control designers and hosting the Windows Forms designer in your app, and your question is related to MetroFramework.
I would recommend posting this issue on its official website to get supports.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Resizing IE window makes game errors

I am running Windows Vista and the latest Java Run Time, If I open up runescape in full screen the game plays with no problems, if I then resize the window (smaller) visually it looks fine until I try to click somewhere with the mouse, and I end up clicking an inch or so under where I wanted, if I resize back to full screen it is fine again.
Conversely if I open the screen window in small the game works fine, if I then resize (larger) I get the image the same size as the small screen and the rest of the screen is white and once again the mouse does not click in the right place.
I have the latest driver from NVIDEA, however this may have something to do with it, I updated the driver because the older driver kept failing and closing the game window down, I no longer get that problem, just replaced it with a new one.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks for reading.

    Hi Isla
Your message is really, very, very long. I think its too long to read it twice ;)
. Regarding all your issues on this notebook well. it looks like you have installed many 3rd party programs and applications. In such case its not easy to say if such issues are software or hardware related. But I presume its software.
I checked your screenshot pic but I have never seen such error message. But it looks like something wrong with the graphic card driver. The message says something about Live Kernel Event
A kernel's services are requested by other parts of the operating system like graphic card driver for example.
In such case I would recommend updating the graphic driver. According to you message its a Intel GPU. So you could check the Intel page for the compatible graphic chip driver.
    Regarding the FN key issue;
The Toshiba FlashCard utility controls the FN key functionality. I have read in this forum that this application does not run smoothly and in some cases it causes some issues. The new update should solve the problems. You should check the Toshiba driver page. The FlashCard Utility is a part of the Toshiba Value added package.
    So finally one more hint:
You should always check for the Vista updates on the Microsoft page. This OS is not perfected and Microsoft releases very often patches and fixes
Hope it could helps a little bit.
If necessary just ask for more info :)
    Regards

  • [SOLVED] Windows lag when moved...?

Using Xfce, with and without composite, the windows lag when being moved. It's like the whole window isn't held together properly; the window movement is kind of choppy, but still smooth, if that makes any sense.
This makes for a rather bad experience. And I'm clueless as to what causes this. It's certainly not my HW:
    CPU: i5-2500k
    GPU: GTX 460
    RAM: 8GB, 1600mhz
Also, even more disturbing, is that when moving a window there seems, if you look closely enough, to be a white after-effect where text and the pointer was a few moments ago. As an example: If I grab a window and move it in a small circle, this happens.
    Any ideas? Running nuts here...

Okay I'll try but I can't guarantee the completeness. Here are all the steps I managed to recollect:
    First install:
    compiz, compiz-decorator-gtk, ccsm, compiz-fusion-plugins-main
the decorator and plugins are somewhat optional but will provide you with gtk window borders and more options.
then edit the following paragraph in /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml
    <property name="Client0_Command" type="array">
    <value type="string" value="compiz"/>
    <value type="string" value="ccp"/>
    </property>
(This replaces xfwm4 with compiz as the default window manager for Xfce)
    Then after running
    sudo nvidia-xconfig
add the following line to the "Device" section within /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
    also add
    nvidia-settings -l
    to your autostart.
Now open up ccsm and within "General Options" on the tab "Display Settings":
tick the option for "Sync to VBlank"
UNtick the option "Detect refresh rate"
drag the slider for the refresh rate to match the refresh rate of your display (60 Hz in my case)
Go back to the main page of ccsm and open "Window decoration". Insert the following line into the "command" field:
    gtk-window-decorator --replace
(This will provide you with your gtk borders on compiz otherwise you would have to use emerald)
On the main page of ccsm tick "Move windows" under "Window Management". (Otherwise you won't be able to move windows around at all)
Restart your system and it should load compiz now. If compiz is acting funny you can always temporarily switch back to xfwm by running "xfwm4 --replace".
Note that you will have the best video experience with mplayer (no GUI).
Consider using vdpau as video output with the corresponding codecs if you don't plan to play 10bit H264 videos, otherwise stick to xv.

  • Did 7.4.2 solve windows losing connection to TC share

I was hoping this new firmware would solve the my issue but at least for me it still persists.
After restarting my TC I can connect my XP box to my TC share.
Though after a few minutes - approx 10 or so - I receive a message that the drive is no longer available, and I can no longer connect unless I restart the TC. My Mac work fine.
This a the newer dual band TC from early 2009 so I can't roll back to anything before 7.4.1.

    toonz,
this is the file from the network diagnostic I did while still running 7.4.2.4 - I also sent it with an email to the tech support for itunes store; so far all I've heard back is that they are working on it and will send me an email when it's fixed. (by the way, I deleted the ip addresses etc. but everything else is the same as it was then.)
Running itunes 7.3.2.6 is working fine, by the way, I was immediately able to connect to the store and download. If anyone else is thinking about downgrading, try saving your playlists first (search for 'saving playlists' in itunes help) because you won't be able to use your old itunes library file. I don't know if saving the playlists separately will help, since I didn't know that would happen when I started. meeshala

  • [SOLVED] Window colors and the .Xdefaults file.

Normally I use a very lightweight x11 setup on my system (ratpoison+a few applications like firefox), but recently I have been experimenting with some more unnecessary eye-candy on an usb memory (beryl and kde... nice:cool:), and after using the color settings program that comes with kde I started to think if it would be possible to do something like setting a new background color for all windows (instead of the gray color) using the .Xdefaults file.
So after booting back to my normal system (with the ratpoison wm), I changed my (xterm focused ) .Xdefaults file:
    XTerm*faceName: Bitstream Vera Sans Mono:size=11
    XTerm*boldFont: Bitstream Vera Sans Mono:style=Bold:size=11
    XTerm*loginShell: true
    XTerm*scrollBar: false
    XTerm*eightBitInput: false
    XTerm*metaSendsEscape: true
    *background: black
    *foreground: green
    XTerm*color0: black
    XTerm*color1: red
    XTerm*color2: green
    XTerm*color3: yellow
    XTerm*color4: blue
    XTerm*color5: magenta
    XTerm*color6: cyan
    XTerm*color7: white
(Note that I removed XTerm from the background and foreground.)
Result! The xpdf application changed colors!
However this setting doesn't affect firefox thunderbird or oo.org...:/
The kde color manager does change the colors of firefox and thunderbird, so hows that possible (I tried `xrdb>~/.Xdefaults` and disactivate the global coloring option in kde and then running xrdb ~/.Xdefaults on my usb system, but that didn't work either)?

1311219 wrote:Thanks! now I only have to find a way to change the default colors in gtk... I suppose it's similar to xrdb(I saw something about an gtk.rc.mine file somewhere)?
Most people use themes like those on Gnome-look. The theme syntax is human-readable, so download one you like and tweak it to use your custom colors.
You can switch GTK themes using a program like gtk-chtheme (in community).
btw/OffTopic: OO.org looks a bit different when it uses gtk, what does it use normally(or is it just different themes?)?
AFAIK it uses its own custom cross-platform toolkit. Actually, it always uses the custom toolkit, but the FORCE_DESKTOP variable makes it try to copy your GTK (or QT if you set it to "kde") look. It doesn't manage 100% integration, the menubars and dialogs still look a little "off." Firefox and Thunderbird use a similar tactic, but always copy GTK.

  • Maximizing a floating document window makes the entire UI inaccessible

On Windows 7, with Photoshop CS6, if you drag a document tab out of the main application window, it becomes a floating document with its own window controls for minimize, maximize, and close just like a normal Windows OS document should.  However, if you click the maximize window button, instead of maximizing within the primary application window like document windows are supposed to... the Photoshop document window expands to the full screen and covers up all user interface elements of the primary Photoshop application window.  This makes all user interface elements completely inaccessible.  Pressing the tab key will not show your tools like you'd expect, though shortcut keys still work.
The only way to get the user interface back is to restore the document window to a smaller size.  If this is a feature, what would it be used for?  Why do document windows in CS6 need to behave differently from the normal behavior of application and document windows on the Windows operating system?

If Adobe were to make the document "maximize" into the application window, there would no doubt be people who want to see it on the whole screen and are used to the way it works in Photoshop CS5 who would be upset.  Plus, that's just not what the Maximize button on a window is supposed to do.
Your workaround is to avoid the Maximize button entirely and use the right-click Fit on Screen function (which really fits to document to the application window) or the keyboard equivalent - Control 0.
