[SOLVED] Windows/Arch UEFI--kernel panic at bootloader install?
I've been trying for two days now to get a Windows/Arch dual boot going, UEFI style. After HOURS of struggle (it's hell being a noob) I managed to get Windows 7 installed UEFI-style from a USB. Arch install is fine until I get to the step that involves installing a bootloader, and everything turns to crap.
Some kind of....I don't even know what. Core dump?? A screen full of numbers & letters!
With both rEFInd and gummiboot (haven't tried grub yet), I get the same result:
http://imgur.com/XS6NxzV
What the heck is going on?!
Last edited by wilberfan (2014-04-20 02:38:13)
Just INSTALLING gummiboot causes mass chaos:
http://imgur.com/VWJNbvD
There's a whole screen full of "call traces" and stuff... UNINSTALLING gummiboot generates a metric ton of this stuff, too....
[edit] Something is SERIOUSLY borked in my system. I've now gotten the identical (or very similar) result trying to install gummiboot, rEFInd, AND grub. Some kind of kernel panic, or something...
All of that screen verbage going by is WAY above my pay grade at this point... :-/

[SOLVED]s2ram leads to kernel panic
Hey guys, i recently experienced a problem when suspending using
# s2ram
, my laptop screen goes blank and the CAPSLOCK starts blinking (I assume it's a kernel panic). here's a log of my recent upgrade http://paste.pocoo.org/show/450909/
And my pm-suspend.log is http://paste.pocoo.org/show/450910/
Thanks in advance.
Wow, turns out virtualbox modules were the issue. Refer to these 2 posts if you experience the same thing
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=122957
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=122956
At the moment i shall disable these modules until a fix is submitted maybe on the next upgrade.

Just out of curiosity, how much free drive space does your PBook have? Open a Finder window, the info is displayed at the bottom. Anything less than 15% and an installer freezes or won't complete the installation.
You might want to check your drive for errors also. Run Disk Utility from your Tiger disk and click Verify. If there are errors, click Repair.
Click the Apple logo top left in your Menu, then click Software Updates. Make sure you system software is up to date.

Constant Kernel Panics on fresh install of 10.8.2
Ever since upgrading to 10.8.2, my Mid 2010 MBP gets Kernel Panics related to the NVidia kext at least 5 times a day. When will apple finally fix this?? Here's the full kernel panic. It's the same thing every time. I have no third party .kext installed. I've blown this out and installed from 10.8 disc twice. It never starts to KP until the 10.8.2 update is applied. This is not hardware related since I did a fresh install of windows on the bootcamp partition as well and it runs just fine without crashing. On 10.8.2 it crashes without any peripherals plugged in except the charger and ethernet cable. I'm not ever taxing the system. It has safari or chrome open and that's it.

Apple has determined that a small number of MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) computers may intermittently freeze or stop displaying video on the built-in display or on an external display connected to the MacBook Pro. In this situation, you may also see a restart warning message before the video is lost or the display turns black or gray. Affected computers were manufactured between April 2010 and February 2011.
This precisely is what has been happening with my system. I took it in a few months ago to a Apple authorized service centre and was denied coverage by Apple citing it wasn't the correct "cause" they were looking for; stating the problem originated in the CPU and not the graphics - but if we look at the problem they state - intermittently freeze of stop of video display, that is the same issue. Since then I have been back and forth with Apple trying to get a straight answer as to what the problem is with my machine, the exact specific of what they "cover" (they seem to make it up as they go along) and how my issue isn't the issue they're covering. Would also note my system has degraded to the point it is completely unusable and is now a really expensive paper weight. I took it in a second time to a different place, and they couldn't even diagnose the issue - Apple now cites they can't cover it because they don't have an error code.
Anyone who has been following this issue would also note how many times and how much the wording in that tech note (TS4008) has changed since it was first posted around September 2011 and would remember the second note (something about the display going black randomly) that has since been merged with TS4008 and now has been removed altogether from the note. -
Kernel panic - trying to install a Samsung 830 ssd
Hi everybody,
please forgive me for my poor English.
I'm trying to install a Samsung 830 ssd with an optibay on my MBP early 2011. The ssd works fine, and I get a Sata 3 speed connection.
The first problem I found was that Disk Utility wasn't able to initialize it! "Posix error: i/o error" or "unable to locate memory".
So I inizitialized it with MacDrive on windows xp on another pc.
Here comes the second problem: when I boot with my ssd on the optibay there's a kernel panic, but when I boot with the superdrive everything is fine. So what can I do? Thanks for your help!
These are the details of the kernel panic

So I put it into my optibay and booted Osx, this time no Kernel panic!
But now there's a new problem: when I try to copy files or create a folder on the ssd I got error -50 can't complete the operation.. Both with finder and muCommander.
So what shuold I have to do now?
I'm getting a little upset.. -
Kernel panic during remote install
i have a mac book air 13 inch from 2008 that upon start up shows kernel panic. i tried everything to get it to run again but to no avail. i decided to reinstall snow leopard, but i lost the usb drive that has it. Using a snowleopard disk from my imac, i tried remote installing over my wireless network. after booting the macbook using the option key and clicking on the snow leopard install disk, it starts to install, but right after showing the spinning globe and the apple symbol the macbook air kernel panics again and tells me to restart the computer. other than bringing the air into the apple store for repair, what else can i do?
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway. -
Kernel Panic(s) after installing Final Cut Studio
So I've been using this Mac Pro for 10+ months.
10G Ram, 3 internal hard drives, OSX 10.5.8.
Been running Logic Pro and Aperture and other small apps with zero problems.
Recently, the only change to my computer is I installed Final Cut Studio and Logic Studio Upgrade.
Past 3 days I've gotten 2 kernel panics. (Report said something about FBD Memory?)
(1st one, I was using Mpeg Streamclip to transcode footage.
2nd one, I was only running Safari.)
I repaired disk permissions, used diskwarrior, did the hardware diagnostic test thing, nothing came up.
I asked Apple Genius but they just said reduce everything to 'base config' and troubleshoot from there.
I wanna ask you guys, do you know of any obvious existing conflicts between the software that might be going on? Am I missing something obvious?Have a look at System Profiler and if you have ECC errrors on the third slot (after rendering some time), you might have the same problem like me and it's not solved yet. But you can take out the third dimm or run smcFanControl and raise the speed a little. Both helps in my case as a workaround.

Installing Mavericks cause Kernel Panic and after installing too
Hi,
I worked with Mountain Lion and all was good, but I thought that would be nice to update to Mavericks.
And I'm not good in Mac OS, so I didn't prepare backup before, because believed that it have to work.
But during installation I got kernel panic several times, yeah. But installation process was continued and finally Mavericks was installed.
I was happy, but I shouldn't.
From time to time I'm getting kernel panic and I don't know what is reason.
The worst things that I can't rollback to ML, because for some reason Mavericks installing instead.
And I did clean install several times, and did cleaning NVRAM and PRAM, but it all didn't help to me.
I haven't Apple Support in my country, so I can't even come to service center.
And my last hope is your support.
Could you please look on a kernel panic log and say me what is wrong with it?

1333 MHz is the wrong memory.

That should work fine. In my case, that wasn't an easy option because the Mac arrived from Apple with the upgraded card in place and my client would have had to buy a video card just to install the OS.
It's been years since I had a version of MacOS that required inits for specific machines. It caught me by surprise, but was totally understandable. The machine was made after Leopard was released and it did come with a proper DVD with the required video drivers, but my client had misplaced it. His Family Pack Retail DVD was the version of MacOS that was on the shelf at Amazon at the time and normally this isn't a problem for anyone because they are always out-of-date and require the user to bring up the OS to the latest version.
I suppose Apple replaced the DVD with an newer version because of the special order status of the machine. -
Kernel panic on fresh install 10.8.2
I have tried multiple times to install 10.8.2 on my mid 2009 15in MBP. I constantly get stuck with kernel panics. I have tried doing a 7 times erase and resetting the PRAM. I can only log in with a safe boot. The system diagnotic report is as follows:

Kernel Panic Leopard Server Install
Recently purchased a 8 core MacPro desktop with RAID card. It's going to function
as a server running Leopard Server 10.5. I wanted to configure the drives for RAID 5 and repartition. Ran into an issue where i could not boot from the Leopard Server install DVD. It keeps giving a kernel panic each time i try.
The install DVD works fine on PPC G5 or Intel Core Duo. It seems to be specific
issue with quad core model Macs.
I figured a work around by target disking the 8 core off a MacBook core duo machine.
Still would like to know if anyone else has seen this problem with the quad processor models.
P.S.
I also tried booting with another set of Leopard server install DVDs and no luck???
Thanks in Advance!!!
JohnHi
This could be because the copy of Leopard Server you are using does not have the hardware specific drivers the MacPro requires.
In which case install the standard OS as normal using the disks that came with the MacPro. Once you've done that define the account name and password as well as network settings as it would if it was a standard server install etc. Once you get to the desktop insert the Leopard Installer disk and use the installer version in the Additional Installs folder.

Kernel panic after Leopard install
Having the same problem with my Dual 2ghz. It ran fine for about 3-4 days after the upgrade. Then I had the same experience as you. Came around the corner to hear fans and full speed and a kernel panic on the screen. I have tried several reboots, SMU reset, cleared out a bunch of Pref panels and tried to clean up anything that could be in conflict. Sometimes it would crash right away...other times after 15-20 min. I just tried reinstall of 10.5. Same problem afterwards. I am about to restore from a Superduper backup that I made before the upgrade. I guess I will run on 10.4 for a while. Verify that the hardware is all good and do the upgrade again.
Any suggestions in the meantime are welcome.William,
Please start a new topic thread. You'll get a wider audience, and not confuse the original poster with solutions that don't apply to them. There are numerous causes for kernel panics, and they need to be isolated one by one. -
Can anyone help solve my forced reboot/Kernel panic situation?
Dear mac users,
Since 3 months I own my first macbook pro.
Since some days, this happens: first the a transparent grey screen rolls down; then a grey box appears in which is written
*You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several*
*seconds or press the Restart button.*
It happens quite regularly, the last time just after booting. There's no other choice but to switch off and reboot. The apple hardware test didn't reveal any problems.
The problems started to occur after I applied the latest upgrades, and installed Parallels, in which I'm running Windows XP. The event however also occurs when Parallels is not running. I also freed up HD space, but to no result. After using the last major upgrade and rebooting, I noticed a one-time event of the screen seeming to darken forcing me to adjust brightness to the previous levels. The mouse pointer has disappeared and reappeared on one occasion.
The last report seems to point to the USB drivers or bluetooth devise. Bluetooth and airport have both been switched off during the events. I might add that I have an external screen attached as I do a lot of photo editing.
Any help will be grately appreciated! After finally abandoning windows, I thought my life would at last be free of trouble...
This is the *last report*:

Try unplugging your USB devices, see if the problem occurs again.
I've had this happen when I tried to plugin a PHILIPS VOIP321 phone for attempted use over parallels. For some odd reason, the USB bus drivers of OS X just can't seem to recognize 2 VOIP phone thus far. The Philips VOIP321 and the Linksys CIT300 are both that I've tested and have never been able to get functioning.
I saw you had USB Device: PHILIPS VOIP321, full_speed, 500 mA in your report, so may be the same issue.
Thing is I find it odd that the USB Device was even named. I don't think my panic reports had that in it. Which leads me to believe that perhaps your issue is not the same as mine.
has your VOIP321 functioned properly ever? if so, how? -
Kernel panics increasing after installing new SSD with Mavericks on 2010 MBP
I'm having more frequent random reboots on my recently upgraded MacBook Pro. (mid 2010, Processor: 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i7, Memory: 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, external monitor: LG Flatron IPS235)
The almost 5yr old original hard drive started making the tell-tell scratching noises and the MBP would randomly reboot 1 or 2 times a week.
I had the HD replaced with a new 480GB SSD drive by certified pros. I mentioned the spontaneous reboots to the pro and he told me that it was probably due to the faulty HD.
The new drive came with 10.9 already installed, whereas I had been running 10.6.8 in order to keep a lot of the older software I relied on.
So accepting the loss of quite a few applications, I proceeded to install just the apps I needed, as needed them. Then the random reboots started happening, a lot more often, up to 2x a day, browsing the web or just checking email. The one thing I could do to trigger the crash, ironically enough, was by scrolling on the new iMac 5K landing page- halfway through "zooming out" (scrolling) in the waterfall image would shut 'er down.
Could it be the RAM? VRAM? The monitor? Updating my beloved MBP cost $575 (and several apps), so I'd like to go back to the same pro with information that could save me $$ on troubleshooting. I'm afraid to install the 10.9.x updates for fear it will bring my MBP to it's knees.
Thanks,
JesseHere is the report in it's entirety:

2012 Macbook Air Kernel Panics post after installing Mountain Lion
I recently purchased a 2012 13" Macbook Air. No Issues under Lion for over a month. After upgrading to Mountain Lion (and taking the firmware update to support power), I've been experiencing consistent shutdowns whenever I close the lid and let the machine sleep for more than a few minutes. I've been submitting the error reports and gave apple a call yesterday and we went through some troubleshooting steps but the problem has continued. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Trying to figure out if it's a Mountain Lion or firmware bug that I will need to live with until a fix comes out or if it's possibly a third party software incompatability issue. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Hi guys! Just installed ML on my early 2009 MBAir (after market upgraded to a 240g SSD, but still just 2g of ram), and I panicked a bit at first when it turned out to be painfully slow and not displaying right (+slow trackpad!).
Bear in mind that the first thing ML will do is index your files for spotlight, which takes a while and is a bit of a resource hog that will slow everything else down and cause your machine to heat up.
I let it work all night, but by morning, my CPU usage was STILL at 100% and everything slow...
Activity monitor showed nothing over 10% CPU usage... First tip was to display ALL processes in Activity monitor, and not just MY processes, to see what exactly was sucking up my CPU!
Then, and it seems to often be the culprit on MBA's, it turned out that the kernel_task process was using up to 170% of my CPU usage (!). Problem is, that process sort of does a million things, so it can be hard to pinpoint the actual issue.
One of the things it does though, is work against overheating...
Given the download+install+indexing, my machine had been working all day and night, and was indeed getting super hot. Turning it off and letting it cool down for a whole fixed it all.
Kernel_task is back to normal, CPU usage is normal, display and trackpad are back to perfect. And in the end, ML is snappier than SL for me, even with the bare minimum in memory!
Good luck! <3 -
Kernel Panic 10.6.2 Unsolved Problem
I have been up and down search engines trying to figure out how to fix this problem I recently encountered on my iMac.
The problem happend as followed:
I have a 32gb partition on windows vista on my imacs hard drive. Windows wanted me to do an update as usual, and i did. When it was in the third and final stage of configuring the update, the computer froze and I had to restart the computer.
Once i turned on the mac, there was scattered "stuck" pixels all over the screen, some were flashing blue.
I tried to enter windows through the option key at start up but it just brings me to a black screen.
When i try to boot in OSX it loads for an abnormal amount of time then brings me to the multilingual error message. I restarted several times reaching the same error, with the same "stuck" pixels.
I retested the PRAM, heard the two chimes.
THis time, the "stuck" pixels were in a new pattern, vertical lines down the screen, about 8 across every 2 inches.
After resetting the PRAM it still brings me to the black screen in vista and kernel panic message in OSX.
Then...
I entered single user mode, and it found some errors using /sbin/fsck -fy
I ran the command a couple of times to ensure all errors were fixed and the "volume appears to be ok" appeared consistently.
I then used "shutdown -h now" and turned the mac back on.
The pixels were still on the screen and still brought me to the kernel panic screen, as well as the black screen in vista.
I gave up and left my imac off for about 5 hours.
I came back with new hope to try and fix the computer.
I removed all first party ram, two 1 gb sticks, then reinserted.
I turned on the mac and everything was fine.
For some reason the fans in the imac were on full power blowing really fast.
There was no more stuck pixels on the screen and it booted, very slowly, to OSX.
As soon as I entered I used the disk util and repaired permissions. There seemed to be many errors in the flash plugin folder. maybe about 30 of them.
I restarted the imac, and everything was fine, everything was back to normal speed.
Once the imac went into screen saver mode for about 15 min, the screen froze and the flurry screen saver looked distorted. I restarted the imac.
Once i restarted the imac the same "stuck pixels" were back.
I tried using all previous methods, all volumes appear ok in single user mode but I continue to receive the kernel panic message along with the pixels.
I can not start from the snow leopard dvd, because i get the kernel message.
I can not boot into safe mode, because of the kernel message.
I can not use a live linux CD because it takes me to a black screen.
Although I did notice one thing.
Once I use the /sbin/fsck -fy command follwed by the exit command, i receive a string of messages, checking the normal functions.
All appear ok but there is a message mentioning the NTFS partition log check not being clear, then it says unable to mount volume cant (read/write)
I am assuming the vista update somehow damaged something but i am unsure because I was able to boot normally into OSX twice after I received the symptoms the first time.
Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this?
THank you for your time reading this very long postEXACTLY!
The same thing happened to me while in vista, in bootcamp.
I had just bought left for dead 2 and the game would suddenly freeze and loop audio constantly
I restarted the imac and it was fine.
I tried playing the game and the same thing happened.
So i figured it was some new windows update i didnt have.
So when vista was in the 3rd stage of configuring the update, the computer froze once more and once i restarted i began getting kernel panic issues.
When i was able to boot back into windows, after the kernel panic issues.
there were about 5 or 8 Big block of pixels, about 64x64, dancing around the screen flashing different colors. I brought me to the windows start up error screen where you choose to start in safe mode or not.
I selected start windows normally and then i received a blue screen of death...on a mac.
After that I have no longer been able to boot off of dvds, of any partitions.
I know it has to be issues with the graphics card, i dont believe its fried but maybe corrupt drivers. Is there some way to reinstall those drivers perhaps?
I called 2 local expert mac technicians and they are pointing to video card issues.
Which sounds true because the mac performs fine in VGA mode(single user mode, and apple hardware diagnostic tests)
The mac begins to boot OSX but i believe once it tries to load the video drivers it goes into a kernel panic.
Maybe we can solve this some how.
I will try to post the kernel panic logs.
