[SOLVED] X issues since 3.14

Since the update to 3,14 (and subsequent builds including 3.14.1-1) I have experienced issues with X on my T23.
When my display manager is supposed to appear (I am using SLiM) the screen enters a continued loop with the screen falling back to the virtual console after each (failed) attempt to load the display manager.
If I load the system in multi-user mode and try to start X with startx I end up with a black screen. I am nevertheless able to switch to tty1 and stop the server which stops without errors.
When checking Xorg.0.log for what is logged during the loop the logging always stops at this point,

I must note though that I am running a locally build xorg-server package (see here for more details).
In order to see if that could have led to the problem I updated to the current xorg-server package and switched to the vesa driver (yes, savage driver is uninstalled; I do not use the latest as its performance together with xorg without XAA support is pretty sluggish on this laptop).
When using the vesa driver the endless loop does not happen but after not succeeding in loading display manager the screen stays at the virtual console. The log from X features the following errors,

When searching for this 'Bus error' I came across this forum thread though if it were a problem/bug with X I presume it wouldn't load either with the LTS kernel which it does, would it?
Finally, if I too enter the system in multi-user with the vesa driver and run startx the same thing as with the savage driver happens, a black screen but I am able to switch to tty1 and stop the server which closes with no errors.

[SOLVED] LM_Sensors Issue Since Last Update

Good Afternoon Community,
After the initscript update was released, I decided it was time to do a reinstall, and use a new DE. I was going to use KDE over the now defunct Gnome2. My system was current up to that point and working perfectly.
Prior to the hard-wipe and reinstall, lmsensors was working perfectly.
I did the usual install and reformat of my particular drives using the 2010.05 CD and am using x86_64 arch as before.
My procedures for installs on friends machines and for me follow a typical pattern:
Install
reboot
iterate through the pacman updates until all is current
blacklist nouveau
install xorg and the nvidia drivers
install the DE, in this case I went with KDE-meta packages.
Then I go about fleshing out the other stuff, microcode, sensors, libreoffice, vmware, etc. Restarting servies with the oaccsional reboot to ensure I've configured the rc.conf properly...
This install, lm_sensors refuses to detect the sensors themselves. It returns this error when I run
sudo sensors-detect
The error I get in return is:
No i2c device files found.
Yes I have followed the wiki and manually modprobed in the coretemp and the other mentioned modules, which in my previous install I never had to do.
Same response from sensors-detect.
The only differences I can detect is that the rc.conf has some changes, this install uses the 2.6.38.5 kernel and my old one was on .4.
I noticed that even after a reinstall of the lmsensors package, the /etc/sensors.d folder is missing. Don't know if this is new, or it went away in a different update and I just didn't notice it.
The other potential issue is runlevel......I chose to modify the inittab per the KDE wiki to start KDE, rather than my old method of launching gnome was ia the .xinitrc/startx combo.
I don't know if this is causing a runlevel issue or not.
Any suggestions to restore functionality of my lm_sensors will be greatly appreciated!

Save problem here. I modprobed the i2c-dev, and sensors-detect worked properly.
I noticed and installed an lm_sensors update this morning and rebooted.
All is normal.

I'm not running any weird background processes and in my energy saver settings I've tagged "put the hard disk to sleep when possible:, "allow power button to put computer to sleep" and "automatically reduce brigthness". All pretty standard.
Is there anyone who can give me some pointers ?

Today I solved the same problem for my iMac running Snow Leopard. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3008791#15947706. The method may help you, too.
For me it was the DynDNS Updater preventing my iMac from automatically entering sleep mode.
To my knowledge the cause of this sleep problem can only be a peripheral device or a process. So I suggest to first unplug all peripherals and test whether that's the cause. If not, I suggest to terminate one process after another and to test automatic entering of sleep mode after each. Start with user processes; continue with system process if necessary.
At least that's the way I found the offending process. Fortunately, I was able to change the configuration of that process to allow again automatic entering of sleep mode.

Try and force iPad into Recovery Mode:
1. Turn off iPad
2. Connect USB cable to computer; leave the other end alone
3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
5. Release the Home button
6. Open iTune
7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
8. Use iTune to restore iPad
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad

My iTunes match on my MacBook Pro hasn't worked since Mountain Lion install. Tried Apple Tech but all their suggestions didn't solve the issue. Guess I will try them again on Monday. Clearly this is a common problem and a Mountian Lion conflict issue.

Same issue here with a MacBook pro recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. I hadn't tried iTunes Match prior to the upgrade so can't say whether or not it worked previously.

The same thing happened to me... Since two days the ******* thing keeps freezing after a while. Then I try to reboot and the screen goes white and it doesn't boot. If I wait like half an hour it boots again.
I thought it was a hardware problem, but the Apple Hardware Test founds nothing at all. I think it has to do with the software update I performed 2 days ago.

what version of iPHoto do you have? Of the OS? is the iPhoto icon you are speaking of in the Dock?

Somehow my "IPhoto" icon now says "Preview". When I click on "Preview" nothing opens up except the bar says Preview. When I click on the Preview on the bar, a box opens up with different items, except when I click on any of them, there is nothing there. The only thing that work is the "quit preview". However, it is still there where my IPhoto icon should be. I can't get into my IPhoto. How do I get rid of this "Preview" and how did it end up taking over the IPhoto icon???

HT6437 My itunes cannot locate my ipod. All the sync option are grayed out and diagnostics says that itunes cannot find usb ports and that no device is connected when it is. What should I do to solve this issue?

So itunes is giving me problems. Since around Christmas time, itunes decided to stop reading my ipod. I connect it to my computer with the usb cable and my computer will recognize that a device is connected but itunes will not. If I go to file->devices and try to sync, all of my sync options are grayed out, while before it would just automatically sync.
When I run diagnostics it tells me that under ports that it cannot find usb ports (it has a green circle?), a type of cable isn't found, and that no device is connected with the usb cable (which my ipod is). I have been trying to fix this issue but nothing is working. I've tried restarting my ipod, itunes, and my computer, i've also tried resetting my ipod and uninstalling itunes then reinstalling itunes but nothing seems to be working.
Does anyone know how to solve this issue?

However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components

Various issues since Leopard upgrade

I have just installed Leopard on a Dual 2.7 G5 with a 500GB Hitachi HDD and 5GB RAM and I have noticed one or two niggling little 'quirks' (I am lumping everything together here, rather than separating them in to more appropriate sections, so that I have a record of everything together).
1) I have an Epson Perfection 4870 scanner which I cannot use to scan directly from applications (for quickness I mainly use Preview) as the 'scan' button is always unavailable (greyed out, not highlighted in blue). This has been an issue since at least 10.4.8, so it's not a problem exclusive to Leopard, but it's extremely annoying nonetheless. As I can scan directly from the Epson Scan software (which is basically the driver) Epson will not assist me further and have directed me to Apple/Adobe/MS, etc., for support. Prior to 10.4.8 (IIRC) I could select 'import' (from whatever application) and it would automatically preview, the scan button would then become available and hitting it would launch the driver software. However, the link between the applications and the driver seems to have been severed somehow/somewhere and it is no longer recognising that the unit has finished its preview in order to make the 'scan' button available for the next part of the process.
In Tiger, I could also scan into Epson's EasyScan application, but have been told this isn't 10.5 compatible.
Does the above make sense...? Has anyone else experienced this - and have you solved it? If so, how?
2) This next bit concerns the Dock. I like to have it hidden along the left hand side of the screen, rather than at the bottom, because I only have a 17" panel and desktop space is at a premium. However, about one restart in five, it's back along the bottom and any icons or folders that I have added to it have gone AWOL.
3) The third issue is a sound issue. I have a Revolution 7.1 card which I understand, from reading a notice on M-Audio's Web site, is not yet Leopard compatible (though the promise it will be "very soon"' though as the last driver release didn't support anything newer than 10.4.6, IIRC, I'm not holding my breath!)
So I have removed the card and plugged my Logitech Z5500s back into the 'on board' card. This was working flawlessly under Tiger (I know because I tested it to make sure, because I knew that the Revolution wouldn't function under Leopard). However, whatever I try, I only seem to hear sound from the internal speaker; I even replaced the optical cable (at great expense - the original was a Belkin Gold Series, and so is the replacement and, at about £35 a pop, it's not a trivial outlay). Everything in the sound sys prefs is completely 'greyed out' so I cannot change it from the internal speaker to anything else. Whilst there is nothing on Logitech's Web site as regards to the Leopard compatibility of any of its products (it seems that it gave up on the Mac a very long time ago; I use a MX510 which was the last of their rodents to have any kind of OS X support and that stopped with 10.4.4, IIRC) I cannot see how a set of speakers, which should work with anything that has the required jack sockets, can be fussy about an OS. Incidentally, I also have a 'dark side' box running XP Home (when I win the lottery, I'll buy a Mac Pro and dispense with it) and they're plugged in there and work fine (via analogue, though, not digital).
I noticed it when I received some CDs that I'd ordered from Amazon the other day and found that iTunes was playing through the internal speaker.
4) The final issue is a networking issue. Under Tiger, I could (though it did take me some tweaking to get it working smoothly) dump things from the G5 on to the Windoze box and vice versa, without too many hiccups. However, Leopard is proving to be somewhat of a challenge, to say the least. I don't know how I managed it, but I did manage to render the machine completely inoperable at one point (it would only boot as far as the grey 'Apple logo' screen and I couldn't open the optical drive to stick the DVD in - a panicked phone call to a friend, who runs his own Mac repair and consultancy business, followed!
I don't understand SMB and AFP (though I do know about FTP). In the Finder, I can see the 'doze box and can send things to it (though should I be connected as 'guest'?) but there is nothing on the Windoze side, save for 'Printers and Faxes'). I have made sure I have permissions set correctly and everything is set up to share (and Windows sharing is on) but there is nothing on the other box at all.
Is it possible to share the main HDD across, or am I limited to this silly 'Drop Box' thing (which I did have available under 'doze at one point, though it was read only and I couldn't change permissions from Leopard because I didn't have sufficient privileges, even though I have an admin account and I could change permissions under Tiger with the same level of 'clearance'.)
4) This final issue is sort of linked with 3) as it concerns what I believe to be erroneous error messages. I was clearing some stuff off a drive I was going to use for Time Machine[1], but I wasn't allowed to delete most of it because 'XYZ was in use' or open in an application. Six reboots later, I was still receiving the same error; strikes me that Leopard's got its knickers in a knot somewhere along the line because the files in question (mainly old Word and Excel docs) were certainly NOT in use as I didn't have either installed at the time!
[1]Though having read the problems people are having with TM (not just here, but on other forums I read/post to) I think I might give it a miss and stick with ChronoSync (just have to wait for it to be compatible).
So, this is actually the second installation, but the problems remain - any help out there?
Sorry for the verboseness of this, but I wanted to make sure that I'd covered everything. I'm almost tempted to reinstall Tigger (but not quite - I like Spaces, and I like the Dock Preview).

Fran, I'm not sure I'm going to be much help for all your problems but I will attempt to answer what I can.
1. Scanner problems - have you tried reinstalling the software? I know you mentioned that the easyscan software is not compatible but it sounds like the driver software isn't in the right place. Optionally another program that you might want to look into is vuescan. I have had good success with the program in the past but I have yet to try it under Leopard.
2. Dock problems this sounds like either a corrupted preference list. But I don't have a clue as to why it might be reoccurring. Have you fixed permissions on your computer since installation?
3. I don't have a clue to figure out how to fix this issue.
4. Networking - As for sending things to the doze box. You don't need to be connected as guest. Just use the username and password that you use when you sign into the windows to sign into the windows box and you should have the same rights as you would as if you were using windows on that computer. Yes it is possible to share the main HDD but it isn't something that I would recommend. What I do recommend is creating a folder where you have both read and write rights to and then use that folder share items across both computers. If this isn't something that is going to work for then at the most I would just share your documents folder. You didn't mention how your trying view information on the windows side you should be able to browse your network and eventually find and see the mac.
4 (part 2) - I would recommend something besides TM, it is designed to recover lost/accidentally deleted files. And isn't really designed for being your complete backup program. Yes, you can use it for that but I would recommend something more robust. Some of that comes down to how you want to define your recovery strategy. Superduper!, promotes themselves as having the ability to boot for your backup drive and being able to almost immediately get back in business. If this is a critical factor to you then I would lean in that direction. If you are just worried about having a backup of critical data files then Chronosync or some other program will work just as well. Also mentioned in your post in this paragraph is a description of "files in use" problems. A couple of things come to mind did you let spotlight finish indexing your drive before you tried deleting files? I've run into a problem similar to this in Tiger when I was deleting files while spotlight was indexing.
One item that you didn't mention was what kind of installation you did when you installed Leopard. If you didn't do an 'erase and install" then that might be something to look into. First back up your computer before doing this. You might also want to run a permissions fix on your drive to see if that helps at all.

Wi-Fi connection issues since securing network

Hi all,
Hoping to get some solutions as I have tried to troubleshoot this issue with other posts and google searches. Here is my scenario :
I'm running OS Lion 10.7.5 on my MBP and have been connected to our home wi-fi for about 12 months on a connection that wasn't secured by password.
Since having some download issues and fearing that someone is connecting outside our household, we have secured our wi-fi and added a password.
Both mine and my sister's iPhones got prompted to select a network, selected the appropriate one, punched in the password and were connected with no issues. My iPad Mini, Dad's laptop and both my parents' phones all connected with no issue.
When I booted my MBP, I was prompted with needing to join a new network and upon selecting our home network was met with an immediate 'Connection timeout' response.
I try to connect manually through Network in the System Preferences and got the same 'Connection Timeout'. When I click 'Assist me' and try to connect that way, I am finally prompted to input the password, which I do correctly and I get 'Invalid Password' etc etc response ... then after about 5 seconds it connects me !!
So even though the connection timed out and I wasn't able to put a password in, manually doing it told me the password was wrong etc then I get connection like normal. If I switch my laptop off/reboot/log out/turn wi-fi off then back on, I'm back to square one and can't connect unless I follow the same tedious steps.
Fearing it was an issue with our router, we have since bought a new one, installed it and reconnected all the devices as mentioned above, however my MBP connection issue still exists.
How can I get it to connect automatically like it used to and recognize our home network with a correct password, without continually having to go through all those steps ?
I have tried to delete that entry in my preferred networks and tried to re-establish it etc. Keychain Access doesn't list my router and input password.
I'd like to be able to solve the issue asap if possible and hopefully without having to delete all of my other known networks that I connect to as I travel all over the country for work and have about 6-8 routers I connect to, depending on what city/office I'm in.
Any assistance would be appreciated !

Some users with various Wi-Fi connection problems have reported that they were given the following instructions by Apple Support, sometimes with success. I can't vouch for this procedure myself. Issue since iOS Update with TomTom Carkit

I have got the following issue since the iOS Update to 6.x
integrated CarKit Speaker is no longer in use=> After receiving an Email with notification signal the speaker becomes active => Makes the usage of a Navigation Software a little more complicated without spoken notifications
Continuos Bluetooth Connection loss to the dock, sometimes followed by the message: Charging with this device is not supported! Could only be solved with undocking/docking the iPhone => complicated during driving on a motorway!
Some apps are no longer able to start (mostly games for my kids).
Has anyone an idea?

Major iPad 3 WiFi connection issues since 5.1.1 update

Prior to the 5.1.1 update (which ironically was supposed to fix wifi issues), my iPad 3 worked great. Since the update it has been a complete disaster.
Even though it always shows a strong wifi connection, certain apps seem to have no connection while others work fine. Safari usually works ok, although sometimes pictures won't show up - just a small box in the corner. Facebook app always seems to have issues as does Pandora. The biggest problem is the App Store or iTunes which say it cannot connect even though Safari works fine at the same time. Ive tried reconnecting, rebooting, and I even bought a new router since I thought maybe my old one was causing the problem.
Is Apple fessing up to this issue? I have to believe it is a software/firmware issue since before the update everthing worked fine.

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

How do you solve an issue with the card? I don't get the option of 'none'

I had this exact same problem with the new iPhone I bought on 1/4/13. The walk through they provide on how to do this is useless because it fails to explain that if you are already having the problem of not getting the "None" payment option with an Apple ID then you will need to create a completely new Apple ID.
I had to do this 7 times since I bought my iPhone on Friday until this morning to figure out how to finally be able to use the Home Sharing option in iTunes to put my music collection on my brand new $500.00 iPhone. Pretty pathetic if you ask me but since it made me so angry I want to make sure other know how to do this so you don't get as upset as I did.
#1 If your current or soon to be "old" Apple ID is not providing the option for "None" as a payment option then you need to make a brand new one. But you have to make it specifically how I tell you.
#2 You will need to use an email address that has not already been used for anything related to a previous Apple ID. You might need to make a brand new email address.
#3 Open iTunes, then open iTunes Store (upper right corner of iTunes).
#4 Click on App Store (upper center of screen).
#5 Scroll down the screen page until you see Top Free Apps on the right side.
#6 Choose any one of the FREE apps.
#7 You should either get the option to create a new Apple ID box, either that, or it will pop up with some kind of disclaimer and then it does the create new Apple ID.
Either way just create a new Apple ID when it gives you the option to and then when you get to the page that looks like the payment page the "None" payment option will finally be available.
Note: You will still have to fill out the information on the payment page. As long as you choose the "None" option it will not request any credit card information.
#8 You will be sent a confirmation email to the new email account. Just follow through with what ever it tells you and viola now you can use your Apple Device.

Since no one has answered my question, I am providing a link
that may shed some light on my issue. When the link opens the four
panels will animate. What I don't want is for them to animate at
the same time. What I do want is to animate in a sequence, 1, 2 , 3
, 4. I've tried using the timeline to solve this issue but the
animation goes haywire. PLS, oh PLS can someone help me?

Without seeing the actual file, and taking a guess here, I
would take each link and turn them into seperate movie clips or
place them all in one movie clip and then place them into the main
movie. But, I would offset in the timeline each movie clip by
however many FPS you have your movie. For example, if your movie
FPS is 25, link one would start on frame 1, link 2 would start on
frame 25, link 3 on 50, and link 4 on frame 75. This would make for
a one second interval between each link opening on your main movie.
