[Solved] x64 - slow video performence?

Hi all;
I have been using i686 for more than two years, and on my current machine, more than 6 months, two weeks ago I moved on to x64.
It seems that video playing is slow, and even stop for half a second when the video is busy.
I am using Nvidia, and never had this problem in i686.
This is very easy to detect if playing 3 videos in VLC, please if any1 is using x64 with Nvidia, do this test: open 4 VLC windows that play the same video file (on my machine this is impossible, the fourth one will not even open)
Thanks

FYI:  I haven't fiddled with vlc's settings, so audio and video output are just set to "Default" (though I normally have it set to only allow one instance ;-)  Similarly, I haven't touched nvidia-settings and my xorg.conf is not so complicated:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "GeForce 8500 GT"
Monitor "Acer P223W"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "NoLogo" "True"
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"
Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
Option "DynamicTwinView" "False"
Option "RandRRotation" "True"
Option "UseEdidDpi" "False"
Option "DPI" "96 x 96"
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection
but glxgears always reports > 3,700 fps running compiz.  I am wondering whether the slowdown is anything to do with the nvidia driver.  What else might cause vlc to pause while reading a file?

  • Slow video playback after reinstalling Geforce2 MX  card

Ok, reinstalled (took out the 9200 card) my Geforce2Mx card and now everything is in super slow motion - video, scrolling, typing, opening and closing of apps, pull down menus, loading of web pages - everything. It's like being back on an old SE30 and now even that seems fast to what is happening now. What did I do wrong? Tried rebooting a few times and resetting pram with no better results.

Press the button near the battery on your logic board, it will reset the PMU, which might help.

Tried that also with no results. Also repaired permissions. What could have happened to the machine to do that?

Installed the modified Radeon ATI 9600 Pro for G5 Edition card and I still have the same slow video playback results. However when I boot up from another internal hard drive I do not have the video problems. Everything works just fine. Both of my hard drives had no video problems before screwing around with the ATI cards and now the one still has the problems with the video playback. This one also has Classic on it and Classic also runs slow. BTW I don't know if this has anything to do with it but when I ran a search result for "ATI" no files are installed on that 2nd hard drive which is playing video and loading pages with no problems. Would trashing all those ATI files on the slow drive do anything to help? Or is this just a coincidence?

    Hi,
Well, you have me scratching my head, that's a real puzzle.
Try an Open Firmware re-set, do the 're-set all' procedure:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42642
BTW, ATI (and OWC) has just released this info on their 9600 video card, meaning it's not so good for G4's:
    Knowledge Base
ATI Customer Care > Product Information > Specifications, Features, Comparisons >
737-21888: Radeon 9600 PRO PC & MAC Edition list of supported system configurations
The information in this article applies to the following configurations:
    Radeon® 9600 PRO PC & MAC Edition
    "Quicksilver" Power Mac G4 model
"Quicksilver 2002" Power Mac G4 model
"Digital Audio" Power Mac G4 model
The Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition is not compatible with the "Quicksilver", "Quicksilver 2002" or the "Digital Audio" PowerMac G4. If a Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition board is installed in one of these systems the result is a blank display.

  • Slow video buffering since installing maverick

I have had slow video buffering since installing Maverick, any suggestions?

I have had this issue before as well
My system was also occasionally completely unresponsive after the Mavericks upgrade. (It's been through 4, now)
So, I backed up all my files with time machine and performed a clean install and all my issues were compltely resolved. Including the slow buffering. Although doing this was a tedious, long, and aggravaiting process, my issues were resolved. Good luck, or whatever, if you are still having this problem as this (even though not an ideal one) is a solution.

  • Problem on HP Pavilion dv7-6c90el with Windows 8 Pro x64 on Video Card

    good evening,
I just finished installing Windows 8 x64 from Win7 Pro, I was able to find all drivers for my notebook, but I have problems with the video card settings.
My laptop is a HP Pavilion dv7-6c90el with two video cards, one run by the processor because it seems to me to be a part, and the other normally installed on the PC.
The cards are read by Windows as:
device 1: Intel HD Graphics 3000
device 2: AMD Radeon HD 6700m Series (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM v1.20)
the problem resides in the fact that the device should be only one support per second, or deactivated, as it will not. The video card AMD should be set to 1, and the intel 2. Only if I go to the "Device Manager" to disable the intel card, Windows works as if it were not present any video card, also installed driver is not correct because the card is an AMD Radeon HD7690M XT, the problem is that even if I uninstall this driver then always comes back. I also tried to download AMD Catalyst in the latest version, but can not find the card. It 's like the Windows is imposed only use the device 1, which, however, I can not disable the BIOS, because there is no voice. I note that under Windows 7 had no problem.
I ask you to help me because I need the performance of the video card for my work.
    This question was solved.

  • Slow video refresh on Macbook Pro Retina 13"

I installed 10.9 and was doing fine, apart from the known GMail issue (now solved). But it has been two days now that my Mac has slowed down on video refresh:
(I use a second Apple Cinema Display 24" through Display Port, but it happens even if I unplug the second display)
    * when I change screen or call mission control, I can notice a drastic performance drop in the video transitions and the menubar flashes vigorously.
    * when fullscreen (for example in Safari) my menubar drops down very slowly and sluggishly.
I reinstalled 10.9 from the recovery partition... but it had no effect. Anyone experiencing this issue?
I haven't installed anything in the last two days. I might have updated the Flash plug-in, but I am pretty sure I did it a few days ago.

Just checked the following solution. Works for me.

  • Z820 slow video rendering

    Hi,
I work in a video production studio that is primarily Mac-oriented. We have two z820 workstations we want to incorporate into our workflows, and have upgraded them with 32gb RAM, Zturbo SSDs and Nvidia Quadro 5000 GPUs. We are hoping to get these stations to render as quickly or more quickly than the standard 2014 iMacs we have in the studio, but so far the machines are rendering a 4.5 minute 5K video sequence in about 12 minutes, as opposed to the Mac's 3 minutes.
I was wondering if anyone on this forum had famliarity with video editing (we use Adobe Premiere Pro) and GPU maximization. We're trying to get the z820s to at least match their Mac counterparts.
Currently the windows machines beat the Macs in transcoding and ingesting footage, going about 5x faster while transcoding Quicktime or R3D files into 1920 x 1080 HD quicktime, so I'm pretty sure they have the processing power to get the renders we want, i'm just not sure what video card/computer settings I might need to mess with to get there.
Any and all help is much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Zach

    @ZFinch
    Hi,
I have had some more time to think about your rendering issue.  Please post your hardware configuration and Product Number.
How large are the data objects?
Think of your rendering process like a single transaction much like when you do an online query to a server. If just one of your transactions are slow then you may have a data object problem. Just for now temporarily assume that the hardware platform is stable but you can test that assumption by running some diagnostics if you so desire.
If all of the transactions are slow then think of the time line for the transaction. Typically the time line looking at the transaction linearly, is made up of three major queuing components: CPU, memory and I/O. You can start the Windows resource monitor before doing the rendering process and then look at the recorded results to determine where the bottlenecks reside.  Are all of the expected number of processors and threads running at 100%? Is the memory utilization at maximum for the 32 GB?  Are you seeking a lot of hard faults? Look at the disk queue length and I/O activity.  What do you see? Historically with transactions, I/O is the biggest bottleneck.
What are your biggest performance bottlenecks with your rendering process?  Once you give me some more information then I can make some more suggestions.  The above graphics that I had referenced may not solve your issue.

  • Slow video playback

    Hello,
I previously had no problems playing videos in iTunes. Recently, however, video playback becomes choppy about 10 seconds in, while audio remains fine. This happens both with my own ripped videos and with iTunes Store videos, at 100% view (i.e., not fullscreen or anything). Looking at Activity Monitor, iTunes begins to eat up 90-105% CPU.
I only have a few apps running (e.g., Camino, iChat, Mail), and everything is responsive until iTunes starts chugging away, at which point my whole system slows down. Can anyone help shed some light on what is going on?

I've been having the same problem on my G4. I created a second user account and noticed that videos play perfectly there, just not in my normal account. I'm now trying to troubleshoot from there to see if it's some third party thing or widget or something that is the cause. Maybe someone else could try the same thing - create another account and see if that solves the problem - then go back and try troubleshooting their regular account. This seems like it could be a solvable problem to me at this point. Please post your results.

    Hi @DragonMaster2 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read about your HP Notebook and having slow speeds. Thank you for all the information about what is happening and what you have done thus far. Something is slowing the Notebook down. Did you install some virus protection or a firewall? If you disable this are your speeds better.
Here is a document on improving your system.
I would be happy to assist if needed as there are many models of HP Notebooks, I would need the model number.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?

  • Slow video playback - jerky video

Hi all. I'm having a problem with my Macbook. Its struggling to play Hi def videos either 720p or 1080p. This was never the case until very recently. The video are jerky and slow. I am aware that the majority of the issue is from the processor but like I said I never had this problem before.
I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing similar problems and if they have solved it.

    Hi Lyssa.
Unfortunately i don't have the original RAM Modules anymore. How would the additional RAM affect the playback speed? In addition to all this I am now in the Apple shop because my Mac won't go further than the pre login screen so I think the HD is gone. : (. The laptop has been relatively slow the last few weeks and this I think is the icing on the cake. I will let you know the outcome but appreciate the help.

  • Slow video playback in iMovie 06

i can import video from my DV camera into iMovie 06 fine but when i try to watch it back it's very slow/jumpy but the sound remains normal. It almost looks as though only 2 or 3 frames are being played every second. I even formatted my mac to see if that would solve the issue but it hasn't. same problem!
    please help!!
    Jamie

I am having the same FREEEKN problem!!!!
My hard drive is 30% free. I used to make movies all the time. All of a sudden, in the middle of editing one, all this choppyness crap started.
Everyone keeps saying check your hard drive space or your RAM. Both are sufficient.
Mac wants us to use their products, but with this ****** reliablity, they are no better than Microsoft.
    Someone help!!!

  • Slow video on 700Mhz G3

Just wondering about the unusable slow playback of purchased TV shows on my 700MHz G3. CPU usage of iTunes process is between 80% and 120%.
Comparable media of same resolution and bit rate although non-encrypted play fine with VLC and still choppy with iTunes.
I guess the issue can be solved, as the good performance of the VLC player shows it.

Looks like the decryption is indeed the problem. With
    VLC-Player a similar Mpeg4-stream plays with 60% CPU
usage. BTW, what type of encryption is used for the
iTunes videos? Is every full and differential frame
encrypted? If yes, what about just encrypting the
differential frames? That should be sufficient for
copy protection and less CPU intensive.
I really don't know any of that. And I also misread your original post. If iTunes isn't able to play the same unencrypted videos that VLC plays, then it's not just the encryption anyway. I've used VLC a bit, but not enough to know whether it uses its own codecs, or uses the Quicktime ones. It's possible VLC sacrifices quality on playback in order to reduce CPU load. Or iTunes' customized interface causes it to use more CPU time than VLC's which, if I remember, is all pretty much the stock OS widgets.

  • [GeForceFX] Green TV-out and slow video when using driver later than v. 56.63

    Hi,
I have an MSI FX 5900XT card. Whenever I try to install a newer driver than version 56.63, I get video playback problems. The video can play fine for a minute or two but then the whole computer slows down and the TV-out picture goes green. Only thing to do then is to reboot and get another 1-2 minutes of video playback...
There are no problems playing games with newer drivers.
Version 56.63 works fine for both video and games, but the problem is it lacks some features so the games don't look as good as they should.
If I install an original nVidia driver instead of MSI's, then I can't get a proper PAL output on the TV.
I have the latest VGA BIOS installed.
Any ideas on how to solve this?
    Thanks
    Thomas

    Quote
but I can't understand how MSI can keep releasing faulty drivers
MSI don't write the drivers, nvidia do. the ones you download from MSI are just rebranded versions, tailored for MSI cards. the vanilla forceware drivers from www.nvidia.com work just as well, if not better
    Quote
No matter how I tweak the nVidia settings I only get a black and white picture on the TV.
which video connection type are trying to connect to your TV (composite or s-video)? what input formats does your TV support?
see this post [GeForce 6] Black & White TV-out for the fix if you connect via composite, but get B&W image
