[SOLVED] Xarchiver or Squeeze in default Xfce4 ?

In Xfce4 official website, xarchiver is the proposed archive manager for Xfce4. But I pacman -S xfce4 and get squeeze as a archive manager. Why not xarchiver ?
However, if it can display a menu on a right click, say "Extract here", or such things, like 7-zip in WindowsXP, I guess it would be more convenient.

I always thought squeeze was the default extractor for Xfce. But XArchiver does have the Extract here functionality -- but not for all types of compressed files. I think its more dependent on the backend processes than the front-end. Xarchiver and Squeeze both are just front-ends for tar, bzip2,zip,unrar etc.

zipinfo is provided by unzip, so install that package (pacman -S unzip).

  • [SOLVED] Several problems with PulseAudio under Xfce4

So, yesterday I sat down to set up pulseaudio on my machine (I want to try and use it for my 'networked-audio system' of the future).
I was aware of the fact that pulseaudio does have several problems. particularly with ALSA-compatibility, but I was ready to give it a shot anyway and hope for the best.
Of course that did not happen...
I installed everything (including packages for backward compatibility with ALSA) and while sound still works (what a relief), I have several problems now:
    1. Pulseaudio does NOT save it's volume levels  - Volume levels for Pulseaudio are gone after next reboot, I was trying to look into this, but found no workable solution.
    2. Strange behaviour of apps when changing volume - This is REALLY annoying.
When I am in a music app for example (e.g. Banshee) and am trying to increase/decrease volume, the current sound (song) will 'mute' when I am moving the slider and only 'resume' after I release it.
    Any ideas are much appreciated,
    Thanks,
SOLVED: It seems that all my alsa channels were automatically muted when pulseaudio was first enabled.
Strange, Is this because pulseaudio wants you not to use alsa or something? :-)

I'm using just alsa now but when I used pulseaudio I used "pacmd" to set suitable volumes. Something like
pacmd set-default-volume (and then volumes in the range 0-65000?)
anyway, "pacmd info" will have the correct command.
I was not aware of this, very useful - Thank you.

  • [SOLVED] no 5.1 sound in Xfce4

    Hello all,
did a fresh install of arch last weekend, installed cinnamon and gnome 3.10.  I had sound working fine.  Since cinnamon would lock up on me (tried the update, didn't work), and didn't care of the new gnome classic, I uninstalled gnome and cinnamon and installed Xfce4.  Everything went smoothly, except after Xfce install, I have no sound, where it worked 1 hour prior with gnome and cinnamon.
I've read through the wiki's, and forums posts and tried their suggestions, however, nothing seems to work.
the output of speaker-test -c 6 appears to work, but I don't get sound.

    *EDIT*
Changed subject to reflect 5.1 sound is not working.  with speaker-test -c 6, I have sound out of all the speakers at once only when speaker-test cycles to front left and front right.  no sound at all when cycling center, rear left or rear right.
Last edited by nixIT (2013-05-15 00:20:40)

Ok, I finally had some time to look into this.  Here is what I did:
-removed my SB Audigy card and using onboard only
-booted to windows to make sure 5.1 works.  *check
    -booted to arch 64 w/Xfce4  -- no 5.1 sound
As a test, I booted to a linux mint 14 Xfce live media and installed, only took 5 minutes so no biggie.  Had 5.1 sound.  and "speaker-test -c 6" worked perfectly
As a second test, I booted to the recently released Xubuntu Xfce4, and installed, again, only took a few minutes.  Had 5.1 sound, and "speaker-test -c 6" worked perfectly
I then copied "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" from xubuntu to a data drive
Last night I downloaded the latest Arch 64 ISO and installed following the wiki.  Once it was time to test sound I ran "speaker-test -c 6" and I can see it cycle through the speakers but only got sound out of all the speakers when speaker-test would cycle to Front Left and Front Right, nothing when it hit Center, Rear Right, Rear Left of subwoofer.
I then installed Xfce4 following the wiki, I can hear a slight static pop from the speakers, I then repeated the speaker test, same thing.  sound out of all the channels when speaker-test would cycle to Front Left and Front Right only.
I'm stumped.  This worked prior to when I moved from Cinnamon to Xfce.
I'm followed the wiki with setting sound cards, and nothing.  I even tried the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, which I copied from my Xubuntu install (above) and rebooted, same thing.
I don't know what to try to get my sound working under Arch and Xfce now.  Any help is appreciated.

  • [SOLVED] Alpine - Error sending: No default posting command

Hi, I have installed the Alpine mail client yesterday, and it all works nicely, except I can't send mail. Everytime I try I get this message:
Error sending: No default posting command
I have tried googling around, and from what I understand Alpine uses sendmail by default, but I haven't got it installed, nor I can find it in the repos. Is there any way I can change this? And what can I use to send mail?
    Thanks.

There's already a bunch of bugs about this filed against most distros. Previously it was just an issue with it not displaying in the application menus, but I think a recent Gnome Shell version (3.4/3.6?) is also now respecting NoDisplay in the Open With / Default application list.  I didn't have this problem on my previous Arch install from about 18 months ago up until two weeks ago - Evince was always the default app for opening PDFs - but with my shiny two-week-old Arch install it was a problem.
That said, using xdg-mime is the cross-desktop way of doing this at least.

  • [SOLVED] Loading mobile version by default with Qupzilla

Is there a way to load the mobile version of all websites by default with Qupzilla?
I can achieve this manually when the mobile version of the website resides in m.webaddress.something, but there are some sites that do not use separate addresses for mobile versions.
I think this is related to setting the browser agent, but in Qupzilla I only see agents for Desktop browsers.
Any hint? Are there other browsers with this feature?

If you need a fix before next major release, just do the following:
    1) Check Arch Files out: http://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/ … hunderbird
    2) Download Patch https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/ … 6e3eca4196 ans save it to patch.patch (for example)
    3) Add filename and md5sum to PKGBUILD
    4) Add after "patch -Np1 -i "$srcdir/libvpx.patch"":
    cd "$srcdir/comm-release/mozilla"
    patch -Np1 -i "$srcdir/patch.patch"
    cd "$srcdir/comm-release"
    5) Run makepkg -si
    6) delete autoconf2.13,yasm,etc. afterwards (makedpendencies)

    Hello,

    sudo tar xjvf archive.tar.bz2
while being in the root(/) folder. everything looked like to run smoothly, but after that i wanted to check /opt and it had 0700 permissions and owner 1003.... wtf? i changed user and group to root and permissions to 755 and opened the /opt directory and the only contents in it was the content from the archive. Is /opt by default empty or did i screw something up? System seems to work normal. I really don't remember what was in /opt nor what permissions did it have before i issued that command. Could this way off unpacking the archive break something?

Are you saying you installed the program without using pacman?  Using a PKGBUILD is the way to go here.

  • [SOLVED] ALSA not working for "default" device

If I try to use alsamixer I get a "cannot open mixer: No such file or directory" error but if I try alsamixer -c 1 to select card 1, it works but seems to be causing issues with applications that are using default.  Doing lspci shows that there are two entries labeled "Audio Device:", one an "intel series 8 HD audio controller" and one an "intel haswell-ult audio controller"
    Any thoughts?
    Last edited by 3mpach3r (2014-09-19 02:39:18)

Several. What are your Alsa configuration files? Did you change the default setup in any way? Do you use card 1 as default? Do you use Pulseaudio?
To change the default sound cards control for alsa only use defaults.ctl node:
    $ cat ~/.asoundrc
    defaults.ctl.card 1; # although the name identifier
    # should be preferred
    # execute
    echo defaults.ctl.card \"$(cat /proc/asound/card1/id)\"\; > ~/.asoundrc
To change the default sound card using the preferred way, use modprobe options. In your case most probably:
    $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-alsa.conf
    options snd-hda-intel index=1,0
    Edit: Added ";".
