[SOLVED] XFCE 4.12 - laptop lid ignores power-manager settings

I just fresh installed Arch w/ XFCE 4.12
In power manager, I set the lid switch to suspend on battery, lock on ac. The setting worked initially, but after the first suspend, or a reboot, the lid switch triggers suspend no matter what.
I tried setting HandleLidSwitch=ignore in /etc/systemd/logind.conf, as suggested in numerous online sources, but it didn't help
I tried rm -rf .config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-power-manager.xml, which makes it work temporarily again, until a suspend or a reboot
Does anyone know of a fix for this? It's not a deal-breaker but it's a pain in the ass.

I may have solved it.
I edited the xml file directly and set <property name="logind-handle-lid-switch" type="bool" value="false"/>
Now the options seem to work as intended. I also noticed that if you launch the settings applet, it changes that key back to true every time it's opened. The change can also be made through the settings editor.
I'll test for 24 hours and mark as solved if it works.

That didn't work permanently, I'm back to suspending on lid close on AC. I'm using TLP with battery thresholds enabled, and I'm starting to wonder if xfce-power-manager is reading the charge state of the battery instead of the power source directly. When my battery is below the start charging threshold and is actually charging, it seems to be working as intended. If my laptop is on AC but the battery is not actually charging, it acts like it's on battery. I might be wrong, it's just a theory.

Xfce is developed at a slow pace, they rarely make releases. Version of xfce4-power-manager from [extra] is 2 years old and doesn't have proper support for systemd and new version of upower. Update to version from [testing], it's a git snapshot, but it's been very stable for me. Here is bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/39893

USB ports power management settings

An All-In-One HP Printer, Scanner, Copier is connected via USB cable, directly to one of the two USB ports in the Macbook. When the Macbook is put in sleep mode, the connection between the HP and the Macbook is interruped (I presume) because in sleep mode, the power (from the computer) to the USB ports is turned OFF, instead of being kept alive, or even reduced. Upon waking up, the HP's functions are partially disabled, e.g. there is no possibility of scanning a document. Restoring all the functions requires uninstalling the HP software, when some of its components have to be trashed manually, and reinstall the software. HP technical support has been very responsive both in contents and in speed, but suggest that the problem might be caused by the power being turned OFF to the USB ports, when the Macbook goes into sleep mode. They suggest either to power OFF the AIO HP before putting the Macbook to sleep, and powering ON the AIO after the Macbook wakes up and regains complete functionality. They also suggest to change the settings of Power Management to the USB ports. I have searched the forums here, and the web in general, but have found no indication that it is possible to change or even access the settings of the power that feeds the USB ports of the Macbook. After this long introduction, for which I apologize, here come two questions. 1) Is there a way, maybe via Terminal, to change the USB power management settings, and how? 2) If there is no such way, would it be possible to work around the problem by connecting the AIO, via USB cable, to a powered USB hub (connected to the Macbook), instead of connecting it directly to the Macbook's USB port, the "rationale" being that the USB hub is always powered, and stays powered when the Macbook is put in sleeping mode. I have solved the issue by turning OFF the printer before sleeping or turning off the computer itself.

Some SCCM2007 Power Management settings being applied.

Hi Currently we are still using SCCM 2207 for our Windows 7 rollout. Our environment is reasonably large (in NZ terms) and varied.
Initially there will be 2 power schemes which will be applied by sccm, both have to be customized for the need of the hospital. In tests the power settings are coming down but several of the settings are missing i.e. the length the display stays active,
in tests I have set it to 5mins but the setting stays as never. I know the sccm settings are coming down as I have put "configmgr" next to the customized title which shows on the PC. I have removed all domain policies that have power-management settings.
The "never" option was what was applied to the pc via domain group policy originally but has been removed a couple of days ago.

i would suggest uninstalling the power management software and then go to http://support.lenovo.com and download the latest version and install it.

Windows Power Management settings don't work with ITunes

Purchased a refurbished Dell Optiplex system a few weeks ago with a 3.2 Ghz Pentium processor, 1 gigabyte of RAM, and 160 GB of hard drive - so a nice, new, fast system running Windows XP.
I set my Power Management settings to go to screen saver after 20 minutes, and power down after 45 minutes. It worked just fine for a month, and the day I downloaded Itunes onto this computer, those settings do not work.
I have reset them.
I have changed them (to as little as one minute).
I have changed them back to the original settings.
I have rebooted my computer.
I have run 2 different spyware programs (Spybot and Adaware) as well as run an anti-virus scan (TrendMicro Housecall).
Nothing has changed, and my only conclusion is that Itunes is somehow interfering with the power settings for my computer and monitor. This is rather frustrating, as I'd like my computer to shut off on its own if someone walks away (I can't trust my kids to log off on their own).
Any ideas on what the problem might be?

Hi, I just bought my iPhone a couple of days ago and am having the same problems.
I have a Macbook at home, but need to be able to sync with my work computer for contacts and calendar. At work I'm running on Windows XP Pro SP 2 and MS Outlook 2003 SP 3. I've made sure to update all MS software. I'm running on iPhone 1.1.3 and iTunes 7.6.
My contacts sync fine, but, so far, no luck with my calendar. I've gone through the trouble of completely deleting everything off my calendar and am trying "test" appointments to no avail. What's really frustrating is that I've logged out of my ID on this computer and logged in using a test ID. I can successfully sync a test appointment following those steps.
Tech support tells me that since I'm successful under those conditions, it must be a corrupt entry on my main calendar. But, as I've mentioned, I deleted everything I can find off my main calendar and am still not able to get it to sync successfully.
This is quite frustrating.

Power Manager settings ignored by Windows 7 (Thinkpad X201)

even when I have set "Change when computer sleeps" to "Never" for both "AC" and "Battery", the system sleeps as set in the Windows 7 own Control Panel - Power Options settings. Why do I need to set one setting on two different places? What is the benefit of using Lenovo's Power Manager then?

I had this problem too - I found that if you run the Lenovo Power Manager as an administrator it will change the windows power settings. Running it as a standard user won't do a thing - the settings panel should be changed by lenovo to automatically require an admin password when run.

How do I get the power manager settings to take hold? And stay that way?

I want to have my computer awake while on the battery and while I'm driving my car. To reduce distraction, I want to have the lid closed.
In order to make this mode easy to get to, I created a new power plan that has the "lid-closed" event result in "do nothing". Sometimes, this works. Sometimes, the computer goes to sleep. It is exceedingly annoying when the computer goes to sleep because I will get to my destination 45 minutes later and find that the computer didn't do what I wanted.
I've also noticed that the setting for "do nothing" sometimes bleeds over to other power plans. This is also a problem because, under ordinary situations, I would like my computer to behave normally.
Here's a summary of the situation:
1. I've disabled the "apply the settings to all power plans" button.
2. I've created a new power plan called "Logging" that should stay awake when the lid is closed. This power plan will sleep after 65 minutes and hibernate 10 minutes after that (on battery).
3. This plan stays awake sometimes, but not other times. At this instant, sitting in my living room, it refuses to stay awake. Oops, just tried it and now it works (a little consistency here would be nice).
4. As a case example, this morning the computer behaved as expected: I arrived at my destination and it was still away and logging. This afternoon, I woke it up and started logging, closed the lid, and drove off. Upon reaching my destination, I discovered that the computer went to sleep as soon as the lid was closed.
5. The program I'm running logs data points. When the computer sleeps, data points don't get logged. Therefore, I know the computer is sleeping because, after a long logging session (45 minutes), there will only be a few seconds of data points (which correspond to the amount of time it takes to close the lid). If the computer goes to sleep after 10 minutes or 30 minutes, there would be many more data points.
6. When the computer hibernates or sleeps, it seems to remove whatever change I last put into the plan. Even so, the plan still "says" that the change is there.
Ultimately, the difficulty here is that I can't predict what the computer is going to do. If I could, then I could adjust my use pattern.

Try this:
Go into Power Manager, choose the Logging profile.
Go into Windows' Power Options, choose a different profile, then switch back to the Logging profile.
See if this clears any contradiction between the two.

Win7 hibernating randomly despite power management settings.

So I finally replaced the WinXP "wallboard" computer last week with a Win7 based box. The computer is used to drive two TV screens and displays multiple console windows for keeping an eye on a mainframe, the TV's are set to turn off
at 6pm and need to be turned back on by the first person who arrives at work.
The box is running our SOE, which includes a SCCM delivered power management profile which (by default) switches off the screen after 15 minutes and hibernates after 30 minutes. While waiting to be added to the "wallboard" profile (everything
set to "never"), I set up mediaplayer in a loop and all was well for two days. Then it was added to the wallboard group (all power settings changed to "never" via SCCM) and the e-motional transparent screensaver was installed.
Everything was working fine the next day (I was away), and then it was the weekend.
Fast forward to the Monday and I turn on the TV's to find the computer at the lock screen. It had suspended itself at 04:20 on the Sunday morning, then appeared to have been woken by wake-on-lan at 3am on the Monday. Much poking around, rebooting
of the box, tech support insisting that I do a gpupdate.
Since this random suspend, it has now suspended itself another four times, twice while I have been looking at the screens, the most recent time it has done this despite mediaplayer running in the background to prevent sleep. I've checked the pwrmgmt.log,
event log, etc. etc., all I can see is that there is a "MonitorTurnedOff (2)" event (pwrmgmt.log), a timechange event (event log and ServiceWindowManager.log), then a "Suspend (8)" (pwrmgmt.log) event, which is recorded in the event log
as "The system is entering sleep. Sleep Reason: Button or Lid". Needless to say, no-one has pressed any button and there is no lid. On resume, the powercfg settings are correct, I can't find any reason as to why it has decided to
take a break. I've now disabled the transparent screen saver app, and I'm waiting to see what happens.
Does anyone have any suggestions of other things to examine to try and work out what is causing it to enter sleep?
Because I'm getting really tempted to put the WinXP box back.

Ultimately, this is better addressed in a Windows forum because its Windows that is enforcing the policy and not ConfigMgr. ConfigMgr has done its job and applied the policy, what that policy does is up to Windows.

Thinkpad Power Manager settings vs Window 7 stock power plan

As much as I can see, many of my ThinkPad w530 stock Power Manager options are the same as in Windows 7 power options (power plans). But I was not able to find anywhere an answer to my quite obvious question, which of them settings have a priority in the event, that they are different? Say, if I choose "Enter system standby" value "after 30 min of idle" in ThinkPad Power Manager, but set the value of the same option to "Never" or "5 minutes" in Windows power options, which should work? Or may be the both simultaneously?

Certainly I can check it myself which a series of simple tests, how it actually works. But my question has a bit another point, that is how these things should work. (I have some minor issues, say, laptop does not go to sleep/standby when works on AC, although previously it did it exactly as it is configured in Power Manager idle settings. So in order to detect possible cause I whish to understand, how it should work.)

Query or Report Showing Machines/Users Who Have Opted Out of the Power Management Settings via Software Center

Is there a record in the DB of machines which have been opted out of power management? In other words i want a report of machines that have the tick box for 'Do not apply power settings from my IT department to this computer' in Software Center.

Power Manager Settings

Hello,
I have an X61s and I am curious about the settings in Power Manager under Battery Maintenance. What does the setting "Optimize for Battery Lifespan" do? If I am mainly going to be using AC power, should I use a custom setting that begins charging at 40% and stops at say 80%? Is it the better option to take the battery out completely and "save" cycles for when you really need it (e.g. air travel)?

If you plan mainly to run on AC, always leave your battery in, in case there is a power outage. (Or use a UPS.)
Run it on battery once a week, down to ca. 15%, then recharge it to 90%.

SCCM Power Managment Settings

Our network had Power Settings enabled and about 300 computers STILL try to "Wake-Up" at 5:30 every day - AFTER we removed the power policy. If we enable ONLY the setting to disable wake-timers with no other option set will it effictively fix
this, and also NOT overwrite other settings our users are already set to locally on the computer? we dont want to enable this and have them start sleeping during the day again.

Create a custom client setting with a high prio and apply it to a collection containing a single test computer. See what will happen.

Whats crazy about my system is I did a complete driver update with the lenovo update and I still dont have the option for Automatically optimize for battery lifespan. There are no additional settings for that, only thing we have to check with setting the BIOS to factory default. To proceed with that go to BIOS and press F9 to set factory default setting and F10 to save and exit.
Uninstall the current version which you have installed and download the application from the below link, it might be little older version. But I have checked with my T430 and its working fine for me.

[SOLVED] Power button and laptop lid close rules not followed (KDE)

I'm using KDE 4.9.1, and the rules I set for the power button and lid close events in the KDE power management settings are not followed.
Currently, I have the power button press event set to trigger hibernation, and the lid close event set to turn off the display. Instead, the power button causes the laptop to power down immediately, as if the 'poweroff' command was issued. Closing the lid causes the system to suspend to ram.
This problem seemed to have started when I installed 'laptop-mode-tools' and 'acpid'. The problem persisted even when I uninstalled the said packages from the system. Most solutions on the internet involve adjusting the contents of files in /etc/acpi/, but that directory does not exist on my system. I also tried deleting the power management configuration files in the ~/.kde4/share/config directory, but that didn't fix the problem either.
Hibernation works if I choose 'hibernate' from the KDE menu.

That's not a good solution.
Changes in systemd default behaviour are reasonable. It guarantees that if your graphical enviroment has no suspend support, it will still suspend when the lid is closed.
For example, closing the laptop lid at KDM login screen will now suspend the laptop. I remember a topic when someone nearly killed his notebook battery with overheat in that situation (the laptop did not suspend when the lid was closed at kdm screen).
This change also brings native (non-acpid) suspend support to lighweight desktop enviroments.
The source of the «double suspend» problem is in acynchronized update of systemd and KDE.
Updating KDE to 4.9.2 (which will be released in several days) will fix this without editing the config file.
Make sure you restore the original logind.conf after updating to KDE 4.9.2.

[SOLVED] XFCE menu entry problem

For some reason that I don't recall, I had qt installed. After removal though, there is still the "Qt Designer" item in the Xfce menu. I've followed the wiki's instructions but couldn't remove it.

I've solved it. Turns out, some menu entries are stored in ~./local/share/applications. Removing it there solved the problem.
