OK, Włóczymy's question is a bit tricky so it's fine to ask.
But chaostheory29's question about changing alt-click to super-click is easy. You should try and figure it out by your self instead of complaining.
However I'll try and answer both question:
Easy first:
- Open Settings Manager > Window Manager Tweaks > Accessibility. Change Alt to Super. (Just mouse clicks worked so it's easy)
Second:
If you use the default settings for xfce4-panel run these command:
xfconf-query -c xfce4-panel -p /panels/panel-1/position
output should be something like this: p=12;x=754;y=747
OK, here change p=12 or whatever to p=0
then run
xfconf-query -c xfce4-panel -p /panels/panel-1/position -s "p=0;x=754;y=747"
It should work like you wish now.
It didn't... you see, now the window is maximized but the panel is under it. I want to see panel all the time and I want it to be above all the windows but in the same time I want the panel not to block windows from maximization. I hope you can help!

  • [SOLVED] XFCE - Incorrect windows placement

    Hi,
I'm currently having a issue with XFCE's window placement. In the settings panel, under Window Manager Tweaks > Placement, window placement is set to Center for all windows, but this option has no effect. I tried changing it to place windows under the mouse, but it also has no effect on the windows placement. Windows keep opening on the screen corners.
I checked the forums for similar problems, and found some results, but none of the solutions worked for me. Also, those are quite old topics.

Shouldn't you actually have it on the maximum value?
I believe the way this works is that the size (or ratio, the option is actually called placement_ratio IIRC and is a ratio of window size vs screen size) you specify here is the minimum to trigger "smart placement." If the window isn't (at least) of that size, then the default (i.e. center or under mouse pointer, as defined below) will be used. So if you want every window to use the default placement, you should set the minimum size for smart placement to be as large as possible. (In fact, I believe with a ratio set to 100 (i.e. slider to the max) it should always use the default placement, regardless of window size, which is want you're after if I'm not wrong.)
If even with the slider to the max you get new windows placed using smart placement, then it sounds like a bug I'd say.
(Also, just as FYI and though you might simply want all windows to be centered, I wasn't happy with xfwm's smart placement myself, you can see this topic for a (IMO) better alternative.)

  • [Solved] XFCE 4.6 Menu Question

Does anyone know where the submenu contents "live?" The main menu references files in the /usr/share/ desktop-directories, but those files don't contain pointers to the actual applications. I'm wondering where it's reading them from so I can change them. They're not "hard coded" into these <Category> designations, are they?
Last edited by userlander (2009-03-03 22:56:18)

Well, you can't exactly "edit" them. They are filled dynamically with the program launchers (program.desktop) which match the Category parameter specified in the "/etc/xdg/menus/xfce-application.menu" In "xfce-application.menu" you will also find the submenu names in form of directories(dir.directory). You can manipulate with the Category specified in the program.desktop files and make them show up in other submenues (Directories) or not display them anywhere, by putting "NoDisplay=true" in them. The best way of doing that is to copy the "/etc/xdg/menus/xfce-application.menu" to $HOME/.config/menus/ and the .desktops files you want to change to "$HOME/.local.share/applications/" where they will override the global settings and also resist an eventual overwrite when updating the system.
It's not crystal clear, perhaps, but that's the way it is.
I hope that can be of help to you.
Edit: Too late as always ...

  • [SOLVED] xfce does not start after SLiM login :S

hello, i have been following the wiki's to setup X, and xfce (which works when i start it from CLI (startxfce4)), and i have installed SLiM which works too!
Anyway, i have setup SLiM to startup via /etc/inittab, (Runlevel 5).  I use ~/.xinitrc to run my xfce WM:
    #the only uncommented line is:
    exec startxfce4
The problem is that once SLiM loads, and i login, X seems to crash (i see the CLI login) before SLiM respawns, and i am required to login again.  I think it must be a simple issue of xfce not actually being started?
i have tried changing startxfce4 to xfce-session, neither work. The login code for SLiM is (/etc/slim.conf):
    login_cmd         exec /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session
and from the same file, my available sessions are:
    sessions          xfce4,icewm,wmaker,blackbox
So, ive heard of some other people who seemed to experience this same issue, but i cant seem to resolve it like they did   anyway, i think i must be missing something and would like some help? thanks.

Many thanks Deuterium. You saved my day! I posted a new thread and finally found your answer. The arch community is great. Now the question is how this file got permission changed?
    [EDIT]
After few tests I noticed that while X is working automount is broken again and no possibilty to go to standby either. This was in the past solved by going to the latest version of consolekit. The problem is that I'm already running consolekit 0.4.1-2.
Here is the message I get when inserting a USB drive:
    Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.38" (uid=1000 pid=3437 comm="exo-mount) interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=2806 comm="/usr/sbin/hald)).
    [EDIT2]
The above error came from the fact that when I got stuck with no WM I modifed the .xinitrc to only have 'exec startxfce4' rather than my original '
exec ck-launch-session startxfce4'. Then after fixing the WM issue I forgot to modify .xinitirc back.

  • [SOLVED] XFCE and automounting DVD/CD

    Hello all,
New to XFCE, switched from gnome 3, and I have a few questions, if someone can point me in the right direction:
    1) how can I automount DVDs or CD's as well as USB thumb drives?  I tried devmon for udisks, and that didn't work.
    2)  as a regular user, I don't have access to the "Restart" and "Shutdown" buttons from the logout menu, they are dimmed.
    3)  whenever I roll my mouse into the lower right corner of the desktop, it appears to get "stuck" for a second or two.  this is the only corner it gets stuck in.
    any help is greatly appreciated.

I was also struggling with the same problem when switching from gnome 3 to Xfce.
The first question is the first problem I encountered and it can be solved by adding "ck-launch-session" This should have been in the FAQ.
I am now facing the second question now. Here is some hints https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Th … tomounting
I am still trying to figure the problem at this moment.
Edit: After following the instruction on the wiki, automount sill not works.
I found a thread on the forum discussion about this issue. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=111867
Basically, thunar and  thunar-volman required gvfs to have automount function properly.

  • [solved] XFCE default mail client

In preferred applications in the XFCE settings manager the two simple questions appeared: default web browser and default mail client.  I set these to firefox and thunderbird respectively, and XFCE indeed recognized that I meant Bon Echo and Mail/News. For the strangest reason, every hyperlink to an HTTP or FTP protocol will indeed open up in firefox and go where it should, but mailto links will do nothing.  In firefox I searched about:config for all options containing the world "mail" and set them to enable as many things as possible.  Gmail is smart enough to open mailto links because it overrides the default mail client behaviour and just opens up a Gmail compose window, which I'm sure many of you know.  This is another one of those minor problems that I'm having alot of these days, so any help would be appreciated.

  • [SOLVED] xfce+slim, suspend to RAM causes black and white strips

I recently installed a fresh copy of Arch. When I click the "suspend to RAM" xfce button the screen turns off as it should, but when I try to resume I see 5 columns of black and white stripes (like a flattened checkerboard ). Alternatively when I click the "suspend to disk" (hibernate) button the screen turns black but the backlight is still on, the only way to get out of this state is to do a force shutdown with the button.
I don't know if this is just an xfce problem, or if slim is also part of the problem, but it doesn't hurt to let you guys know about that as well.
Reading about this problem somewhere else as a probably graphics driver issue, here's my graphics card:
NVIDIA Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300] (rev a1)
and I installed the Nvidia nouveau driver from here. I didn't see anything on that page about this kind of issue.
I also tried to add "ck-launch-session dbus-launch" to my .xinitrc file, I knew it probably wasn't the solution but I wanted to try anyways. didn't work.
I also have 2 gigs of RAM and 3 gigs in swap partition.
    What do you guys think?

I have a slight newbie question that's related to my problem: after installing pm-utils am I supposed to have a file /etc/pm/config.d/modules? I reread the docs on suspend and standby here and the instructions are implying I should already have such a file, (since they say to modify it rather than create it), but I've installed and reinstalled the pm-utils and don't have any file there.
It's kind of important too, since i'm thinking I should put my graphics driver as one of those suspended modules...
Edit: one more interesting tid bit, when I use "pm-suspend" in the tty command line (by disabling the slim service and never going to xfce) I suspend fine. I need to have root privileges but I can just use sudo. (this is another reason why it could be a graphics card issue or I guess a privileges issue, hmm)
Edit2: I just tried to login as root from slim and hitting the suspend button, but got the same issue. So it's likely not a privileges issue. Strange.

  • [SOLVED] XFCE Panel Icons

Does anyone know why my panel icons are black?

You can't actually move stuff freely in XFCE panels; moving only changes the order of things.  You have to use separators (which can be invisible and have the option to expand) to get stuff in particular places.  I have eight invisible separators on my panel, and the 'Window Buttons' item expands to fill all free space, allowing me to place things on the 'end' of my panel.

  • [SOLVED] XFCE Slideshow Wallpaper - Fade animations

    Dear forums
As the title says, I wonder if there is any way to get nice fade animations like in Gnome or KDE for XFCE. I remember there being an inbuilt option in XFCE making it possible to select some images which would be cycled through, but other than using e.g. Variety on Ubuntu, there is no animation when the wallpaper changes. Does this depend on some library? Could it be that Ubuntu has a configuration which makes it possible to use those animations automatically in XFCE too?
I'm seriously considering leaving Ubuntu for good and use Arch Linux again, but since I'm using my Computer every day, I'd like my Desktop to look pretty.
    Thanks in advance!

progandy wrote:You could try shantz-xwinwrap-bzr to force a window in the background.
What a coincidence, I just figured that out myself!
In case anyone will need this:
xwinwrap -b -fs -sp -fs -nf -ov -- feh --bg-fill /path/to/your/wallpapers/
xwinwrap will say that feh died but the exit code is 0 so there's nothing to worry about (does feh run as a daemon in the background?). Fade duration is specified by the compositor itself (now the only thing that'd make it perfect would be making compton use a longer fade duration on feh only), for automatic switching I'll use this for now, file "wallpaper_randomizer":
    #!/bin/bash
    while true; do
xwinwrap -b -fs -sp -fs -nf -ov -- feh --randomize --bg-fill /home/alexander/Bilder/Wallpapers/
    sleep 600
    done
    chmod +x wallpaper_randomizer
I'm using the XFCE settings to start it automatically, but adding it to .xinitrc would probably work too (useful if not using XFCE):
    compton -b &
    /path/to/wallpaper_randomizer &
    exec start_xfce4
That makes me really happy somehow. Thank you, progandy, that would've really helped me if I've given up searching for a solution already.

  • [solved] xfce-wavelan-plugin

    Hi All,
I have recently installed ArchLinux and have been experimenting ever since. I have my wifi set up through netcfg which uses multiple profiles so I can connect wherever I am. I have also settled with XFCE desktop environment, and am happy so far but I have a tendancy to swap and change a lot.
The on issue I have is when attempting to use the wavelan plugin in XFCE. As soon as I add it to the panel it crashes and in tty1 I get:
sh: /sbin/ifconfig: No such file or directory
I know that net-tools has been deprecated, is there anyway round this?
I tried searching for this issue by googling and on the forum/wiki. Apologies if it has been already solved!
    Thanks,
    Matt.

I guess net-tools is technically depreciated, but I'm used to it and it seems to work fine.
In the interest of the most simple & elegant solution, how about
    pacman -S net-tools
However, (and I run XFCE too), I recommend NetworkManager & network-manager-applet for WiFi as it makes dealing with encrypted networks much easier.

  • [SOLVED] XFCE - Editing Applications Menu

    Hi there,
The applications menu seems to update happily in XFCE when i use pacman.. however pacman has placed some items (eg. XMMS) into an incorrect category (in this case "Other").
How can I edit the menu so that XMMS is placed into the "Multimedia" group? When I use the menu editor in XFCE, it allows me to add or remove items from the menu, EXCEPT it has an "include" entry that seems to include another menu called "system"...?
Where can i find this "system" menu??

  • [SOLVED] XFCE Theme Customization Tool

    Good evening Arch Community,
Now that LXDE (My DE of choice) is about to be dropped from the normal repos, I felt it time to move to a supported DE. My next choice was XFCE. I'm sorry that Arch has decided to slowly move LXDE to the AUR from the mainstream repos.
XFCE is a nice, and capable DE. But it has always been an achilles heel to me with regard to theme customizations. But tweaking theme colors is no easy task. With LXDE, I could easily "tweak" the theme setting to my preferences. The white background hurts my old eyes.
In XFCE it seems that you have to understand the nuances of the gtkrc file to tweak theme colors. I don't have the time, nor the desire to become a gtkrc file format aficionado. I've got dev work I need to do.
I am hoping that the Arch community can point me to a GUI tool that will allow me to tweak theme settings graphically, just like the other DE's such as LXDE, KDE, Gnome 2. I have personal preferences for not using KDE, and I have to bite my lip regarding Gnome3.
XFCE would work for me if I can just get through two color changes. just two. If I can tweak these, I'll be a happy camper indeed.
I've also posted to the XFCE forums, but, unfortuntely, as usual when I ask color questions, I get categorically blown off. Clearly, the lack of an easy theme tweaking tool being a weak spot for XFCE as a DE.
I've gone through all the themes......and downloaded some new ones. I just do not like the xfce.dusk theme, nor the white backgrounds of the others.
I am using Moomex as a theme, and just want to tweak two settings:
    a) The default background color of an opened window
    b) The bg/fg colors of the WindowButton items on the task bar. Currently the WindowButton's of opened tasks show up as white text on a very light grey background. Difficult if not impossible to read.
If someone could point me towards a tool I would be appreciative. Or if someone knows the two magic field names that I need to tweak in my gtkrc file of my current theme to change the two items outlines above, I would also be appreciative.
    Sincerely and respectfully,
    Dave
Last edited by dcbdbis (2011-10-11 17:23:15)

Forgive me for being too verbose. Within XFCE there is no mechanism to adjust theme colors. Example: Within a specific theme, there is no GUI dialog to open, and adjust the default window background of the chosen theme. You are forced to manually edit the gtkrc file. In LXDE, I have a small GUI where I can take my chosen theme, and adjust the color of a selected item, in this case, the window background. A few clicks, and it's done.
There is no such facility in XFCE.
From what I've read (unless I'm misunderstanding) is that the color changer in LXDE is specific to LXDE. It actually doesn't tweak the original gtkrc file, rather it tweaks some settings in a local file unto itself and by some mechanism unknown to me at this time, "melds" the original gtkrc file with the customizations by the user. I've looked at the original gtkrc files in "/usr/share/themes" after I've tweaked them. They are unchanged.
For now, I've reverted to an LXDE/OpenBox hybrid. I hope someone in Arch decides that LXDE is worth keeping in the repos, like e16 & e17.
I had originally tried XFCE because Arch had announced that LXDE was being reverted to the AUR and out of the official repos.
    Hopefully, this clarifies things.
    Thanks!
    Dave

  • [SOLVED] Xfce 4.8, "no running instance of xfce4-panel has been found"

    Hello fellow Archers!
I just upgraded my Xfce installation to version 4.8, but I have a weird problem with xfce4-panel. After upgrading the system via pacman I've rebooted, and after logging in I couldn't see the Xfce's panel anymore! Moreover, a dialog box pops up saying that "no running instance of xfce4-panel has been found". I've tried to fix this issue by launching xfce4-panel through a terminal, and then saving the session before logging out. Now when I log in, I can finally see the panel, but the pop up window keeps coming out every single time. Do you have any suggestions on what could be the issue?
