[SOLVED] Xfwm4 seems to be broken...

I decided to attempt and install compiz with xfce. I decided to do step 3 on the wiki page for compiz with xfce, because step 2 didn't seem to work, and step 1 is pretty ugly. Well, I don't know what happened but my computer won't even start with xfwm anymore. I added compiz to startup applications as descriped in step 1, so that now I can actually use my computer. This actually works fine, with the exception of when I try to switch workplaces on the panel causing the panel to dissapear, needing to be restarted.
But I want to fix xfce so that if I choose to not use compiz I can have that option, but it seems to be the only working window manager right now. I tried uninstalling xfwm with "pacman -Rsn" and then building it from ABS, but that didn't change a thing, seems to be just the way it was before.
Thank you for any help in advance

Oh okay, that makes sense now, thank you.

This is how I use compiz with XFCE (method 1).  Not sure what you mean by 'pretty ugly'.

Note with the fusion icon, you can easily switch from Compiz to Xfwm4 by right clicking on the icon and choosing "Select Window Manager".  If you have problems, you can always reload the Window Manager from the fusion icon as well.
I didn't mean that it looked ugly, I just meant it was kind of ugly how it killed xfwm and then started compiz. Compiz looks great (this is my first time having hardware good enough to run it, (I've only used Linux on old computers previously). I think it actually looks better than my Macbook does. Love all the great theme options.
EDIT: Everything seems to be working now, thank you all. I just deleted the configuration files for Xfce and reinstalled it.

  • Numbers seems to have broken

I was using Numbers this morning -- no major problem except that it didn't properly recover from page view (leaving junk on the right of the table).
This afternoon it seems to have broken. ALL my files, including the one from this morning have mostly blank cells. The contents seem to be there - if I click a cell the contents show up in the formula bar (or whatever it's called). And if I double-click to edit the contents reappear. But then go away again as soon as I finish with the cell.
Some (but not all) of the header cells in Gray Headers style show up, and some are simply a pair of faint white squares at the end of the text string. Check boxes show up OK.
Oh, and if I double click on a date it shows up for editing with the year as 00002010.
This is very distressing. I have a lot of data locked up in Numbers and as of now, all is unusable.
    What's going on?

Thanks for the help. Actually I should have mentioned that I tried that (I've been using Macs since my Mac IIfx in 1990 so I picked up a few tricks) as well as restarting. The problem remains.
In the meantime I've tried opening my files (remotely) with another machine. No problems. It's local.
Next I'll try reinstalling Numbers, if I can find the disks

  • Update seems to have broken openbox theming.

I updated about 2 hours ago and it seems to have broken a lot of my window manager.
I use openbox as a standalone window manager and have had no issues so far.
I update every few days and today caused the resizing-freeze issue, so I downgraded the suggested packages which fixed that.
However I have another issue with theming.
Programs such as firefox, thunderbird, thunar etc... all have the correct theme. However I use some gnome programs such as rhythmbox and nautilus and neither of these are themeing correctly as well as terminator and all appear to have the default gnome theme.
I use obconf and lxappearence for themeing normally, however these seem to have no effect.
I've done a fair amount of searching and googling and am now very tired and am going to bed.
If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated. If I am being stupid in my sleep deprived state please feel free to point it out XD.

    Hi all. I'm also running Openbox and have done the following so far;
    1. Installed gnome-themes-standard. Created a new folder ~/.config/gtk-3.0/; Created the file in the folder "settings.ini" with the following code;
    [Settings]
    gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme = true
    gtk-theme-name = Adwaita
    gtk-fallback-icon-theme = gnome
Thanks to the info on the thread here
    2.  Checked out the post here. Downloaded the tar of Adwaita from this.page and did the usual "makepkg -s" magic and rebooted.
What I'm now getting is nm-applet in tint2 with the dark theme of Adwaita which is great but doesn't really match my dark theme axiomd but it's better than before.
What I'm wondering is how to manage this in lxappearance, change font etc?? If I select the theme Adwaita it's a light theme? Having looked in the directory there is both gtk-2.0 (i think this is the light one?) and gtk-3.0.
I've also noticed that it is affecting rhythmbox; slow to load and the status icon setting in the plugins is missing, so you close the GUI and find the app quits rather than the previous behaviour where it would close but the notification icon would still run in tint2 enabling one click control access to the GUI again.
I appreciate this is obviously a new implementation and will take a bit of time to learn but any tips from those in the know would be great!? TIA.

  • ITunes seems to be broken, only get stereo sound

    Hey all,
I use Windows XP Pro with the latest iTunes version and for several iterations of iTunes now, it only play in stereo mode (two speakers) and will not take advantage of the true capabilities of my PCI sound card, a Creative Audigy Gamer.
In Windows I can set the sound card to play in 'Quadraphonic Speakers' mode and I can play CDs with Windows Media Player and get the full effect I should get. I fire up iTunes and it only plays through the two 'front' speakers and absolutely refuses to play as it should with all four speakers going. It used to work a few iterations ago, but an iTunes+Quicktime update sometime past seems to have broken it!!
I have completely removed the Audigy drivers and the card, then re-installed all of it, because I know that the favorite response from folks is to do this first, so please don't tell me to do it again as I won't...unless you have some additional, deeper suggestions that might do it, of course!!
Personally, I think iTunes is broken, but I have no proof. Anyone else having this issue or knowof a fix?
    TIA,
    Just Me Here

Try right-clicking or Control-cicking the iTunes application and selecting "show package contents".
Check in Contents -> Resources Disabled to see if your remaining language files are there. If they are, drag them to Contents -> Resources. Close the Contents window and try launching iTunes again.

    YouWinSomeYouLoseSome wrote:

I can... you cannot. I'm not sure why. It will not work on an app icon.
Are you sure you're doing this on a Folder?
Perhaps it is a function of Finder. You can try deleting Finder prefs to default.
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • [SOLVED] recent update seems to have broken my keyboard

    hi guys.
i've just turned on my arch 64 system after updating last night (or possibly the day before...)  and when i get to the gdm login the keyboard doesnt work. I can confirm the problem is not with the keyboard itself as i can still edit the boot options in grub. anyone else have this or have i broken something...
    thanks in advance,

dinkydarko wrote:hald wouldnt make a difference to the one screen keyboard in gdm would it?  is there an easy way to check if its running?
I could be wrong, but my understanding is hal would be needed as soon as X starts - so yes it could affect login with gdm. That would also fit with it not working in slim or starting xterm.
If you're pretty sure it's related to the updates it might be helpful to post the parts of pacman.log that are relevant so we can see what exactly got updated.

  • HAL seems to have broken after update. (SOLVED)

I'm not sure what happened, but after updating arch recently CD's, DVD's, and USB drives/sticks are not available. They "seem" to mount themselves as before, as they show up in gnome, but they are inacessible, clicking on any icon for them brings nothing up.
Sorry for the cryptic nature of this post, I'm not even sure where to begin looking in the logs for whatever error/warning might point me in the right direction. Can someone kindly tell me what I should be checking to resolve this? Thanks!

  • [SOLVED][GNOME] 3.14 update broken

    Hi all,
Just upgraded my system to the latest 3.14 release and now everything is broken. GDM will not start and I cannot start a GNOME session directly via startx.
Is anyone else having this issue?
This is on an Intel Haswell based system, by the way.
    journalctl shows the following:

I also get an error when trying to start a GNOME session after the upgrade. I removed my infinality patched freetype2 and fontconfig and installed the latest ones, with no change. using SLiM as my login manager because GDM isn't compatible with the Catalyst graphics drivers.
this is most of the output of journalctl | grep gnome:

In Console messages I was finding the following along with error -1708:
.sdef warning for argument 'FileType' of command 'save' in suite 'Standard Suite': 'saveable file format' is not a valid type name.
So, I thought I'd change the save line as follows:
save document 1 as "QuickTime movie" in thePath
While this didn't solve the problem, it threw an error and allowed the script to continue with the error dialog rather than hang.
Interestingly, though, the Snow Leopard machine seems to register the same error and yet still manages to save the file correctly.
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers,
    Anthony

  • Firefox update 3.6.15 seems to have broken all addons

Since I update to the most recent firefox (3.6.15), all my addons are broken. In the addon tab, they say that they're enabled, but I can't click on the preferences buttons of any of them. Some of them display a green exclamation point, but the ones that don't are still broken. At the top of the addons tab, it says "Restart Firefox to complete your changes" but if I restart, it still says that and it didn't update them.
I've tried updating several of them manually, but they don't update and they don't work. The addons don't appear anywhere in my browser at all; for instance if it's a toolbar, there's no toolbar and no option to get the toolbar when I right click. If it's a button on my main bar, it's gone, and when I go to "customize" the button is still not available.
I've googled this a bunch and am not seeing anyone with my problem.

You might want to add more details in "Computer Model Information" lines.
Is there any source of interference nearby?
The Mac Pro - does it run on a dedicated line / circuit? UPS and/or line conditioner? It shouldn't be putting a real tax on the circuit, unless it is shared with a lot of equipment. They've been known to push the limits for some.
I've seen more than a couple threads reporting problems with ViewSonic (gladly my LCD VGA is older and seems safe).
Are they running off X1900 Radeon?
Sometimes a system ships and even DIMMs can be loosened, maybe video card needs to be reseated?
Hopefully it is just a loose cable somewhere.

  • [Solved] Eye of Gnome awful (broken?) interface after upgrade

Just today I've upgraded from eog 3.14.3 to eog 3.16.1 and am incredibly disappointed in the new interface I'm seeing, to the point where I expect something isn't working as it should.  (I've downgraded to 3.14 as a temporary solution).
Normally (3.14) I see this handy menu bar with buttons for options I use quite frequently, including rotate and zoom to 100%.  http://i.imgur.com/mLBxPX3.png
However, after upgrading, I get this crappy minimal interface with only an expandable zoom slider (which is unlabeled) and ever-present buttons obstructing the image.  I can find nothing in the settings relating to this bar. http://i.imgur.com/l01DRVE.png
Again in the newer version, the hoverable menu when in fullscreen mode does have all these original buttons, they're just not in the main windowed interface where I need them. http://i.imgur.com/xsnlUTW.png
This seems incredibly broken to me (I've always loved eog over all others for the interface), but I haven't been able to find any other complaints since the release of this new version.  Is this a new "feature" or have I just managed to make it broken on only my computer?

Eye of MATE is absolutely perfect. I didn't use any plugins so I'm fine without them, and the interface and functionality seem to be identical to eog pre-update.  Thanks very much!
Bevan, the icons were disappearing but the grey boxes under them were not.  I'm not really worried about that anymore now anyway.

  • [SOLVED] GTK2/QT window decorations broken on maximize in GNOME 3.12.2

When maximizing non-GTK3 (GTK2/QT4) applications in GNOME 3.12.2, the window decorations are not properly displayed. This happens regardless when maximizing via the shortcuts, dragging the window, or double-clicking the title bar. Here is one particularly bad example:
    http://i.imgur.com/NhUQ1bU.png
Hovering the mouse over the missing areas, or focusing a different window restores the decorations. Google or the GNOME Bugzilla didn't bring further clues, but I didn't have this problem in GNOME 3.10 (or FWIW, Cinnamon 2.2).

I'm having a smiliar problem in Flubox with qt4 applications, however not only related to fullscreen.
Even qtconfig-qt4 is broken in its appearance. nVIDIA gfx card here and everything up to date.
Downgrading qt4 package doesn't seem to help
Virtualbox is also broken in its GUI, gives console messages like:
Qt WARNING: X Error: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter) 9
    Major opcode: 62 (X_CopyArea)
    Resource id: 0x0
EDIT: No need saying but No I haven't changed any qt/gtk/whatever configuration in between.

  • [SOLVED] Modesetting with external monitor broken (intel)

After recent updates, modesetting during boot no longer works if an external (vga) monitor is plugged in.
Once it gets to modesetting, both screens go black and I can't tell what happens after that (Might hang, might boot fine I just can't see it…) The external vga screen is black (with very occasional horizontal line of noise), but remains on (It doesn't go to sleep, which it usually does if not receiving a signal).
If the monitor is unplugged during boot then plugged in once the login prompt is reached, modesetting works and running X multihead with xrandr seems to work normally. (workaround until the issue is solved)
Changing from Early KMS start to Late KMS start means the black screen appears later, but it still appears.
Booting with nomodeset works with the monitor plugged in, but means X fails to start with an error message about not finding any screens.

Ok, I'm trying to collect information for a bug report, so if people could confirm or correct what I have so far and add any additional relevant information, that'd be very helpful.
The fact that running the linux-lts kernel fixes the issue suggests that the problem almost certainly lies with the kernel.
Comparing the date of my first post with /var/log/pacman.log, I believe the upgrade that first caused the issue to appear was this:
    upgraded linux (3.7.3-1 -> 3.7.4-1)
(There is a very slim possibility that I managed to upgrade to 3.7.4 without actually rebooting into the previous kernel, in which case the issue could have been present in an earlier version, but I wouldn't have encountered it.)
So far, the only graphics card affected appears to integrated intel chips:
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS(/GME), 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
Has anyone observed this issue with a different graphics card? (check the output from entering "lspci" in a terminal if you're not sure how to find out)
Finally, Wittfella found reinstalling from scratch fixed the issue. If someone can come up with a reasonable explanation as to *why* this fixed it (and ideally narrow it down to changes that can be made without reinstalling from scratch if at all possible), then it's possible that it's not an actual bug, so much as a poorly documented change that causes problems upgrading but is otherwise ok afterwards.

  • Illustrator CC 17.1 Alt + Scroll Wheel seems laggy and broken

I upgraded to illustrator CC 17.1 Yesterday and the scroll wheel zoom seems completely broken.
Is this just me or is anyone else experiencing this? It is a huge issue as I use this a lot during the day.
Is there anytime line for a fix if that has been noticed? Also is there a way to roll back my upgrade?
    Thanks
