[SOLVED] xlock ignores font specified in .Xresources

Yesterday I updated my system and one of the updated packages was xlockmore.
Since then I noticed that xlock ignores the instructions in .Xdefaults.
How can I get it to use Terminus font again?
Here is the info about my system:

Same problem here. xlockmore-5.41 gives:
$ xlock -resources|grep font
XLock.fpsfont: -*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-24-*-*-*-*-*-*
XLock.font: -*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-24-*-*-*-*-*-*
XLock.planfont: -*-fixed-medium-r-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*
XLock.messagefont: -*-times-*-*-*-*-18-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
While xlockmore-5.42 gives two more lines:
$ xlock -resources|grep font
XLock.fpsfont: -*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-24-*-*-*-*-*-*
XLock.font: -*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-24-*-*-*-*-*-*
XLock.planfont: -*-fixed-medium-r-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*
XLock.fontset: -*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-24-*-*-*-*-*-*,-*-*-medium-r-normal--24-*
XLock.planfontset: -*-fixed-medium-r-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*,-*-*-medium-r-normal--14-*
XLock.messagefont: -*-times-*-*-*-*-18-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
I don't have any instruction in .Xresources for xlock, but the font used to be enjoyably small (some monospace font, maybe terminus). After upgrade it's big and ugly; I can't tell its name just by looking at it, but it's a serif font. I have terminus-font installed and a bunch of Windows-compatible fonts manually copied to /usr/share/fonts, and anyway it mustn't be a font problem because as I said version 5.41 works just fine.
The output in the console where I invoked xinit is identical for both versions:
xlock: can not find font: -b&h-lucida-medium-r-normal-sans-24-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1, using fixed...
libGL error: some driver error here...
(I believe the libGL thing is because I use the atunnels screensaver.)
Both versions generate:
$ pacman -Ql xlockmore
xlockmore /usr/
xlockmore /usr/bin/
xlockmore /usr/bin/xglock
xlockmore /usr/bin/xlock
xlockmore /usr/bin/xmlock
xlockmore /usr/share/
xlockmore /usr/share/X11/
xlockmore /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/
xlockmore /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/XLock
xlockmore /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/XmLock
xlockmore /usr/share/licenses/
xlockmore /usr/share/licenses/xlockmore/
xlockmore /usr/share/licenses/xlockmore/LICENSE
xlockmore /usr/share/man/
xlockmore /usr/share/man/man1/
xlockmore /usr/share/man/man1/xlock.1.gz
xlockmore /usr/share/xlock/
xlockmore /usr/share/xlock/xglockrc
I ran diff on the two versions of xlockmore /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/XLock (I guess it's some sort of config file) and they are identical.

How did you solve this? Could you please share your secret. I am facing the same problem on Solaris and would love to find a solution.

  • [solved] vconsole.conf FONT setting is not respected in systemd

I recently converted my Arch system to a pure systemd setup (as described here), and everything seems to be working as before.
    Well, almost everything.
Prior to switching over to systemd, I had already moved all config settings (except for the DAEMONS line) out of /etc/rc.conf and into the individual config files, and at that time, I had set up /etc/vconsole.conf as follows:
    KEYMAP=us
    FONT=ter-216n
    FONT_MAP=8859-2
When running under initscripts, this was working fine, and I would get the nice Terminus font at my console TTYs. Now, running under systemd, the consoles are no longer using Terminus. Instead, I just get the default font (whatever it's called). It's as if the FONT I set in /etc/vconsole.conf is being ignored.
systemctl reports the following, indicating (I think) that the systemd-vconsole-setup service ran successfully:
    [owner@computer ~]$ systemctl status systemd-vconsole-setup.service
    systemd-vconsole-setup.service - Setup Virtual Console
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-vconsole-setup.service; static)
    Active: active (exited) since Wed, 08 Aug 2012 08:31:51 -0700; 9h ago

    man:vconsole.conf(5)
    Process: 151 ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-vconsole-setup (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
    CGroup: name=systemd:/system/systemd-vconsole-setup.service
So, I'm stuck. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Yes, you're right. I have updated my /etc/vconsole.conf accordingly.
However, I just tested this, and it turns out that my FONT_MAP mistake was not relevant to my original problem.

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … _KMS_start
Interesting. It turns out that using early KMS start also solves my console font problem. I think I prefer this solution, since it doesn't involve overriding systemd-vconsole-setup.service. Enabling early KMS start feels like a less invasive change. As documented here, I simply added i915 to the MODULES line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, and then rebuilt the /boot/initramfs-* files.

  • Getting error REP-1352: The fonts specified for this report cannot be found

    Dear Friends,
I'm getting the following error when I run my reports on Application Server installed in Solaris 9.
REP-1352: The fonts specified for this report cannot be found for the character set specified by NLS_LANG.
I searched internet and found the reason for the issue i.e., as follows.
REP-1352: The fonts specified for this report cannot be found for the character set specified by NLS_LANG.
Cause: The NLS_LANG environment variable specifies a character set for which no font is available.
Action: You may choose a font that exists in the character set specified by NLS_LANG. Alternatively, you may use the Font Alias file to force an available font to be used instead of the one specified in the report.
I cannot change the font for each & every report as there are more than 100 reports. HOW CAN I USE THE FONT ALIAS FILE? It is very Urgent, please solve my problem.
    Please help me ASAP.
    Thanking you.

  • How do I ignore colours specified on web pages so I can use a screen tinter program?

I have problems with my eyesight and have started using Screen Tinter software to change the colour of background to something more comfortable. I have been told that you can do the same on web pages by going to tools/internet options/accessibility/ignore colours specified on internet pages, but I think this may only work with Explorer (and I'm a Firefox fan). Any ideas how to make it work?

You can use the NoSquint extension in Firefox to set specific text and background colors.

  • KDE4 ignores font hinting settings [solved: qt bug, fixed in 4.5]

Full hinting enabled in Gnome and KDE:
Slight hinting enabled in Gnome and KDE:
KDE seems to ignore the hinting settings. It's present in ~/.fonts.conf, also Qt3 apps work fine.
I would like to use slight hinting everywhere, but KDE4 defaults to full hinting anyway
Google wasn't very helpful on this issue, and I found no mention of it in the KDE bugzilla.

Edit2: Oops, ignore my patch - it doesn't work. Qt4 doesn't even use cairo.

You can try to this in ~/.xinitrc :
    xset +fp /usr/share/fonts/local
    or any other path.

  • Font specified in Text entry box not what shows in playback

    Hi,
I specified 10pt. Arial in my text entry boxes, but the text
shows up much smaller. Only sometimes. Any idea why? Is this a bug?
    Thanks,
    Deepali

Try selecting all the text in the caption and setting it to
10 pt arial even if it is already set that way. Sometimes there are
invisible formatting characters embedded in the text. Be sure to
delete any blank characters or lines that appear after the text -
these can hold formatting characters also.
If none of this helps delete the caption and start again
making sure your font is set correctly before you start typing.
Also be sure not to copy and edit a caption that has give you
trouble, even if it is fixed now.
    A useful hint:
If you are cutting and pasting text from another application
(such as Word) copy it to Notepad first, then reselect it and copy
it to Captivate. This strips spurious formatting characters.

  • [SOLVED]Xfce4/Xorg - Fonts messed up

    Hey
Beside dwm I'm actually trying out if Xfce4 fits for my needs so I installed it using 'pacman -S xfce4 xfce4-goodies'. I'm already used to it since my time with Debian so I like this DE pretty much.
Everything installed just fine and apparently works, but the fonts are really ugly.
I tried to change them in the Settings-Manager and in Xfce4-Terminal/Mousepad, but I can choose one font or another, they're all the same. There's no difference between Monospace, Newspaper, Sans, Serif, Clean, ClearlyPUA etc.. They all have the same style, same size and same uglyness.
What works is, that I can change the size of these fonts and I can select other fonts, but beside the size everything stays unchanged.

Ok maybe it's a bit difficult to explain my problem.
    Another try
I want Xfce' fonts to look like this
but currently it looks like this.
As I already know from my Xfce experiences with Debian, using a font like Monospace normally gives me a nice smooth font as in the first link/image. But currently I can chose Monospace or whatever, the font stays the same, even if I select Monospace the font stay as small and awkward as before. But as I said before Monospace should give me another font which, as stated above, would be very smooth.
Hopefully my problem is easier to understand know.
    Thanks in advance.

  • [SOLVED] ugly cyrillic fonts in all Qt applications

I want all my applications gtk and qt alike have the same gui style.
For gtk applications I use "lxappearance" and for qt I use "qtconfig".
However, as soon as I change gui style to gtk in qtconfig, all cyrillic input becomes ugly (see pic http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/44 … 9scu.png/) whaver font I try.
Can somebody provide a workaround please?

    oh so fast!
just solved it, you should select Dejavu Sans (book) in lxappearance for all gtk apps, this font seems to work ok with cyrillic in all qt applications.

You would need to apply a style sheet that loads for all pages that you visit (fonts that you view on the web are determined by a) the designers who specify either specific fonts, or families (like serif) and b) the fonts that you have installed on your system).
