[solved] Xorg 1.6 segfault

Since xorg-server 1.6 was released, X has been dying on me... I believe I can always reproduce this by switching to a virtual console and back to X.  Once X dies, it's pretty much over; computer won't respond to anything except magic sysreqs.

    Hi everyone,
    I'm experiencing a perfectly reproducible (even with a completely fresh Arch install) Xorg segfault with a certain constellation.
    When using the latest binary nvidia drivers (works with the 260 beta also), dragging the mouse pointer within a qt window (vlc, smplayer, skype, qtconfig) crashes Xorg with a segfault when using a Xinerama configuration. Twinview or single screen works fine however.

    Just to do some more analysis on this, I tried to compare the sources between the old working xorg-server that Arch packaged (version 1.8.1.902, found at http://www.x.org/releases/individual/xserver/ and the latest 1.9 xorg release that Arch uses (version 1.9.0, found at the same aforementioned URL).
    In version 1.8.1.902, the file Xext/panoramiXprocs.c has this version of the critical if-statement that Ochi originally mentioned:

    I tried to reinstall dependencies of xorg-server and mesa. And then I even went through with the whole system update which I postponed for a few weeks because of the KDE changes. Sadly even the whole system update didn't help.
    Is it possible that any old config files can cause this?

    I tried kernel parameter "nouveau.modeset=0" but it didn't help.

    Ok, I guess I solved it by reinstalling xf86-video-nouveau.
    Funny business! Why did the upgrade to xorg-server 1.17.1 force me to remove it when it is still needed??
    And why does that lead to mysterious error messages and segfault??
    I discovered it accidentally when I stumbled upon the fact that the package was still installed on my newer x86-64 Arch installation despite being on xorg-server 1.17.1.

    xorg crashes for me with a segfault with these versions, first line of the backtrace mentions /usr/lib/xorg-server/Xorg (OsLookupColor+0x119) [0x594a29].
    Anyone else seeing the same? I'll try with the previous NVIDIA driver in the meantime.

    Sorry this doesn't really help with the Xinerama problem, but since you are using the nvidia driver, have you considered using Twinview instead? You could do composite stuff too with Twinview - last I knew, Xinerama had problems with things that want to use compositing. I don't know how your setup is but if you're not set on using Xinerama, it might be an option to consider.

    Hello. I'm usually pretty good about solving my own problems, but this one has me beat. So, yay, first post.
    Recently my nephew brought me his computer for a nuke and pave, and since he doesn't have a legit Windows key and I don't use Windows anymore I decided to install Arch on his machine, since it's what I use and I'm their go-to tech support.
    Unfortunately I'm having trouble getting Steam to run correctly on his machine. It will start up, update/verify install, show the login screen, and after authenticating it promptly dies.
    Some details:
    This is a somewhat fresh install. I provisioned it from within a Vbox VM on my own workstation and then moved the HDD to the actual box.
    Full system update was done just today. Problem existed prior and persists after.
    Proprietary GPU drivers are not being used.
    lspci shows the video adapter to be: 07:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G71 [GeForce 7900 GS] (rev a1)
    I've already removed Steam's bundled libs, as per the wiki.
    I've tried steam --reset and rm -rf ~/.steam and removing and reinstalling the steam package. No dice.
    The presentation of problems detailed here seemed pretty similar so I installed lib32-dbus but this did not resolve the issue.

    What does the problem with modules mean? Archlinux was warning me, that "in future releases /etc/modprobe.d/framebuffer_blacklist.conf.save will be ignored, but it is the same file as /etc/modprobe.d/framebuffer_blacklist.conf.
    I don't understand, why it cannot find any screens (I use a laptop screen)

    Use the arch version.   It is actually built against the xorg version that you are using...  here is the relevant section of your log:

  • [Solved] Xorg 1.8 / Trackpoint configuration issues.

    After upgrading to X.Org X Server 1.8.1.902 (1.8.2 RC 2) on a T400, I've been having a strange issue with scrolling and middle-mouse-button pasting and the new configuration system.
    After the initial upgrade, I had no keyboard or trackpoint whatsoever (though the touchpad has always mysteriously worked perfectly) -- after some configuration work, mostly from these forums -- I got most things working:
    The problem I still have, though, is that EmulateWheelTimeout seems to have no effect (I think). It's loaded (by default, I believe) -- but all the same, the mouse moves when I scroll, and more annoyingly, on middle-mouse click, everything is pasted twice.
    Edit: I though I'd add another piece of oddness that would help people figure out what is going on. When I restart X, I get no keyboard whatsoever, until I send the first mouse click. Then everything works as described.
    Edit 2: Setting Option "EmulateWheelTimeout" "1" took care of the double-pasting issue, though the behavior is strange (mouse still moves while scrolling, though less...). I'd be curious what happens with other small values (5, 10, etc.). Anyhow, I'm going to mark this as solved, though I wouldn't say it is.

    Switchng off hal deamon and cleaning ~/.kde* has no effect...
    So, after searching on google again an again, still nothing found.... even among the Ubuntu specific issue where post are terminated
    with "wait next version of the package", the windows-style answer.
    I will continue my attempts to fix this... but my conclusion about this is that hal was more precise in his behavior than udev...

    Beginning this week i installed Arch linux for the first time (several times infact) and i followed the installtion guide to get gnome working on my machine...
    pacman -Sy
    pacman -S xorg
    pacman -S gnome gnome-system-tools gnome-extra gdm gksu
    I also added the "fuse usblp"  and " fam hal" entries to /etc/rc.conf in their respective sections as decribed there.
    When i would reboot and type gdm the system would start up and i could configure everything else, but after reinstalling this morning this no longer works because the xorg got upgraded to a new version.
    When i type gdm or startx in complains that "vesa" has no modes, so i installed and configure the fglrx drivers from the pacman source.
    Now comes the actual problem, when i now type gdm or startx i get the graphical enviroment but my keyboard and mouse do not work and the computer is frozen.
    I tried going to a diffirent tty but it won't take those commands either.
    Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be ? i do not understand what is wrong....
    The Solution - Because the vesa driver didn't work i installed fglrx and i deleted this folder called /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d as i had never seen it before and figured that  i didn't need it if xorg.conf was present.
    Leaving the folder intact solved the problem
    it was a noobish mistake from a beginner, sorry folks

  • [solved] xorg 1.6 - dual-monitor not working any more

    I switched to arch64 and with it came the new xorg 1.6. Now X won't start with the configuaration I used before and I can't figure out what to do about it.
    I want to use two monitors (laptop + external) with an Intel X4500 HD und xf86-video-intel. I found out, that it doesn't like the virtual screen I defined. If I remove that line everything works fine for the laptop-monitor. With the virtual screen defined I get an error in xorg.0.log

    Maybe I'm looking at the wrong point, but could someone give me a hint where I can learn more about UXA/EXA. The problem seems somehow solved, but I'd like to learn more about this and would like to understand what the problem was. Right now I don't even know what makes the difference between UXA and EXA It just works.
    And somehow google doesn't make it a lot clearer for me right now...

    If I enable the testing repository and perform a full system upgrade, I can get X to work with the open source drivers for ATI. But I need to get fglrx to work in order to use tv-out. So there seem to be a problem with Xorg itself, not the driver in this case.

    died inside /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so - so I figured if you removed fglrx, Xorg -configure wouldn't try to use that module, and the crash would go away.   I'm glad I guessed right.

  • [solved]xorg configuration issues, either no mouse or flickering

    Hey all, ok well a little while ago I was having trouble with hda-intel and trying to get a decent frame rate on my card, it was never solved, now after an upgrade the problem seems to have solved itself, that is except now it flickers when playing a game.
    So I backup up my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and then deleted it, and with startx x works fine and the game doesnt flicker, although without an xorg.conf (I beleive it uses hal?) my netbook's mouse doesn't work.
    Placing the backed up xorg.conf back into /etc/X11/ reverses the problem, I have a mouse, but games = flickering.
    I am FINALLY getting 55fps on super mario chronicles (my test game).
    Here is the relevant lspci output:

    I also noted that if I moved /etc/X11/xorg.conf to the current directory and tried to run it, it wouldn't work, this same behavior occured with trying as root, and trying with the conf file generated from X -config although if I then moved the X -config file to /etc/X11 and used startx it would exhibit the same behavior as having no xorg.conf file in /etc/X11

    Thank for that Zack89, problem solved, for those interested I installed the xf86-input-synaptics package and removed my xorg.conf, if you do this make sure you have hal and dbus installed.
    To get my touchpad to be 'more' equal in both direction I followed the instruction in man synaptics and at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Synaptics.
    After doing cp /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/11-x11-synaptics.fdi /etc/hal/fdi/policy/ I then added the following two lines in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics.fdi
    <merge key="input.x11_options.VertResolution" type="string">57</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.HorizResolution" type="string">57</merge>
    The two values are meant to be height and width so that synaptics can scale its calculations accordingly, instead I supplied both values with the width so that I would have even mouse movement.

    I am in the process of installing arch and have gotten to the point where I need to install the video drivers. I decided to use the proprietary ATI catalyst drivers. I downloaded the catalyst-utils tarball and it said my xorg was outdated. Went to reinstall xorg and it still is just using the 1.8 version. I checked my repo mirrors and I am using up to date ones. I -Syu'ed a few times and pacman still wants to install 1.8. I tried specifying with /extra/xorg, still no luck.
    Whats going on here?

  • [SOLVED] Xorg and mouse with HAL doesn't work

    Hi
    I recently reinstalled Arch Linux and I have some problems... My mouse isn't working - at all! I'm using an HP Compaq 6510b.
    I've installed the following packages:
    * xf86-input-evdev
    * hal
    * dbus
    I don't have an xorg.conf file at all, as I heard that hal should solve everything automagically for me. This seems to not be the case?

    I've managed to solve this, I believe. Don't experience any crashes and X startes in tty7, as it should.
    I've moved this line to the end of my inittab instead of the beginning.

  • [Solved] Xorg log says Option "AccelMethod" is not being used

    I am using Arch for about 3 weeks now. I initially got some problems for setting up my xorg.conf with correct resolution but i solved it.
    Today i  looked my Xorg.0.log and find that Option "AccelMethod" is not  being used.

    The latest intel drivers only support UXA, so any AccelMethod option is ignored, as you can't set anything else than UXA.
