[SOLVED] Xorg problems.. :/

I've got nouveau-dri, libgl. All the nvidia modules are unloaded and nouveau ones are loaded.
xorg-server 1.8.1.902-1
nouveau-dri 7.8.2-1
libgl 7.8.2-1
Also I've got these xf86-input- pkgs:
local/xf86-input-evdev 2.4.0-1 (xorg-input-drivers)
X.org evdev input driver
local/xf86-input-keyboard 1.4.0-2 (xorg-input-drivers)
X.Org keyboard input driver
local/xf86-input-mouse 1.5.0-2 (xorg-input-drivers)
X.org mouse input driver
local/xf86-input-vmmouse 12.6.7-1 (xorg-input-drivers)
X.org VMWare Mouse input driver
When I startx, mpd keeps on playing, but mouse and keyboard is not working.

Why is X -configure failing? It outputted: http://dpaste.com/213349/
Btw I uninstalled vesa, cause I thought it might be messing something up, but nothing's still working.
remove nouveau, install vesa, have xorg configure vesa, and then simply replace the driver
btw. you should have KMS enabled.

  • [SOLVED] Xorg problem: fglrx, startx & Xorg -configure

    Hi,
On a HP 8510p notebook (Core 2 Duo, AMD/ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600)
I have just installed Arch Linux, did a system update (pacman -Syu), installed the catalyst package, which depends on xorg-server, among others.
When I do a "Xorg -configure" it fails with a "Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server aborting". As I see in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I don't get an (EE)/error. I just can' understand why the X server fails.

    Fatal server error:
    Caught signal 11. Server aborting
Obs: When I do a "startx", with a custom and minimalist xorg.conf, my notebook stops to respond (doesn't function Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, Alt-F2,3..., Ctrl-C... noting) and the screen is all black.
But first, I think it should work the "Xorg -configure"

    Hi!
    I'll post some more information...
When I do "startx", like I said, it seems that X is starting, the display changes from grey to black and dark-grey again... but then I can't do nothing to exit, but to press the power button.
So, as no "hwd -x" (uses lshwd -> Segmentation fault) or "Xorg -configure" (Caught signal 11. Server aborting) works, I wrote a xorg.conf by 0, googleing around and inspiring me from the Arch Wiki.
I have no ~/.xinitrc (I have tried with one who had an exec xterm, but no success)
    Package information:
    xorg-server 1.4-5
    xorg-xinit 1.0.7-1
    xorg-twm 1.0.1-2

  • Solving Kernel/Xorg problems

    Hi all,
I've been using linux for several years now, and I like it a lot, but it's still not clear in my mind what to do when I run into kernel or Xorg problems.
When I run into a problem with a userland application, it's usually quite simple to identify the culprit or at least the apparent culprit, find the relevant bugzilla, file a bug and try to help the people in charge to fix the problem.
In contrast, the world of low-level stuff is a lot more intimidating. For example, I have had several display and supsend/hibernate problems with my laptop for more than one year now, but I still have no idea what to do about them. What can/ should I do about kernel/Xorg problems?

I didn't want this thread to be about my specific problems, but here goes:
    - Suspend fails about half of the time, the screen blanks (with a cursor blinking) and the computer just hangs. It is completely dead (REISUB doesn't work)
    - Hibernate doesn't work, when I turn the computer on, it checks the filesystems and boots normally
    - About 10% of the time, the login manager (currently kdm, but I had the same problem with gdm) shows with a very low resolution. Restarting xorg usually fixes the problem.
I probably have a few more that I'm forgetting at the moment.

  • [solved] Xorg 1.8.1 + FGLRX Mouse and keyboard don't work...

Beginning this week i installed Arch linux for the first time (several times infact) and i followed the installtion guide to get gnome working on my machine...
    pacman -Sy
    pacman -S xorg
    pacman -S gnome gnome-system-tools gnome-extra gdm gksu
I also added the "fuse usblp"  and " fam hal" entries to /etc/rc.conf in their respective sections as decribed there.
When i would reboot and type gdm the system would start up and i could configure everything else, but after reinstalling this morning this no longer works because the xorg got upgraded to a new version.
When i type gdm or startx in complains that "vesa" has no modes, so i installed and configure the fglrx drivers from the pacman source.
Now comes the actual problem, when i now type gdm or startx i get the graphical enviroment but my keyboard and mouse do not work and the computer is frozen.
I tried going to a diffirent tty but it won't take those commands either.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be ? i do not understand what is wrong....
The Solution - Because the vesa driver didn't work i installed fglrx and i deleted this folder called /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d as i had never seen it before and figured that  i didn't need it if xorg.conf was present.
Leaving the folder intact solved the problem
it was a noobish mistake from a beginner, sorry folks

  • [solved]Xorg cound't run on Nvidia

EDIT:thank everyone helping me, and I have solved my problems.
NOTE:my laptop is actualty equiped with dual graphics and using wiki  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus it work prefect!
my new laptop is ASUS A550JK which is reported has one graphics card(Nvidia GTX 850m)
first of all , I'm confused how many graphics cards in it really because lspci's output is this:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 06)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor PCI Express x16 Controller (rev 06)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor HD Audio Controller (rev 06)
00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family USB xHCI (rev 05)
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 (rev 04)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)
00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port #1 (rev d5)
00:1c.2 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port #3 (rev d5)
00:1c.3 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port #4 (rev d5)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation HM86 Express LPC Controller (rev 05)
00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family 6-port SATA Controller 1 [AHCI mode] (rev 05)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller (rev 05)
    01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM107M [GeForce GTX 850M] (rev a2)
    03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n (rev 01)
04:00.0 Unassigned class [ff00]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 5287 (rev 01)
04:00.1 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 12)
it seems that it has two graphics cards:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
    01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM107M [GeForce GTX 850M] (rev a2)
    whats the fact?
I try to collect imformations (in China network) about this laptop  ,all webpage and even ASUS information never say this laptop has dual graphics cards, and I have tried bumblebee itreturned xdisplay error..
EDIT:maybe i am wrong, I have found two webpages that describe this laptop(ASUS A550JK4710)actually is hybrid graphics.
secondly . Im trying to install xorg after just install package nvidia and configed using nvidia-xconfig. when running startx it reports:

Thank you very much and I have deleted these words already. Im sorry to annoy someone...
I try to collect imformations (in China network) about this laptop  ,all webpage and even ASUS information never say this laptop has dual graphics cards, and I have tried bumblebee itreturned xdisplay error..
EDIT:maybe i am wrong, I have found two webpages that describe this laptop(ASUS A550JK4710)actually is hybrid graphics.
and xorg error seems due to the deriver?

Second, the lspci ouput indicates you have hybrid graphics.  I don't have much experience with these systems, but they are well documented in the wiki.  As far as I know you can't use *just* the NVIDIA (but I might be wrong) - I'm pretty sure if you want to use just one of the video cards you can use just the intel.  Hopefully someone with experience with hybrid graphics will confirm or correct this.
    For now, see here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus
EDIT: after reading that wiki page I'm more doubtful of my own statements so I've crossed them out.  But it seems there are various steps needed to configure the use of the nvidia drivers.

  • [SOLVED] Xorg & Firefox lock Gnome desktop, causing massive CPU usage

    Hi there,
since I have installed ArchLinux x64 on this laptop (Core 2 Duo, 9600M GT with Nvidia's binary driver 195.36.15-2, Gnome 2.30) Xorg spins out of control every so often - more often repeatedly in an hour, sometimes not for a prolonged time.
This appears to occur (so far only) when Firefox is running (with any site, independent of Flash, but looks as if its main window has to be open) with which it then consumes an entire CPU core, making the mouse pointer and any terminal cursor blink rapidly, as well as windows being selectable, but not e. g. resizable or closable. Any keyboard input to a terminal has to be hammered in repeatedly to be accepted.
It also seems as if it is especially prone to happen if another program (say, gThumb) is ordered to switch to full-screen by F11 with FF's window open in the background, which frequently for whatever reason then also wants to change into full-screen, causing "conflict".
Switching to a console and killing Firefox or starting it via terminal and canceling it there ends each occurrence of the issue. Xorg.0.log does not report any errors.
An upgrade to Xorg 1.8 does not appear to have affected it.
I know this bug (or ones like it) has also occurred to others for years now, but I have so far been unable to find any solutions in reports concerning it.
    Any help, please?
My xorg.conf (many options in "Device" have been inserted as attempts to solve the issue):

edit: I cannot say exactly what apparently ended this issue, however (of the changes I explicitly remember) after the following it does no longer occur:
        1. Had to delete the extensions.* (cache, ini, rdf) files as they became corrupted.
        2. Removed the Fox Splitter (aka Split Browser) extension.

Well yes, I though about this too, but that certainly wouldn't solve the problem (esp. were it to appear with other apps); besides, there are just way too many features (extensions, scripts etc.) that Chrome a) does not have or b) would be a royal pain to properly add.

  • [SOLVED]xorg-server 1.14.4-1 - mouse wheel not responding while moving

I notice a relapse of the bug (https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/29191 and https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48167) since the xorg-server upgrade. Downgrade to 1.14.3-2 solves the problem. The problem is noticed in ioQuake3 engines.
    UPDATE:
The problem was relative to the mouse brand and model since other mouses didn't have issues. After a few kernel upgrades the problem went away thus I'm marking this thread SOLVED.

I've just tested some of the games that had that bug and they all seem fine so I'm thinking it's a different bug, perhaps in ioQuake3.

  • [SOLVED] Xorg 'Out of Scan Range, Change Timing Signal'

    Hi, all!
I'm just doing a fresh install and having done my first reboot, I am trying desperately to configure X, before installing xfce.
I have an ATI Radeon card and a Sun-GDM5410 21" CRT monitor. Unfortunately, when I do 'startx', I get a message on my monitor saying
'Out of scan range...change timing signal'
I've tried created custom Xorg files instead of letting Xorg work it out, itself. This didn't solve the problem. So as not to further confuse myself, I have rm'd these files and have let X manage itself, again.
I've read and re-read the Xorg and ATI wiki guides, and Google'd around, but I can't get around this.
    Any help really appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Chris.

  • [solved] Xorg update makes screen become black for short time now a...

    Hello,
when using the new xorg-server package, my screen becomes black for an instant every once in a while, needing some time to switch back on (perhaps a backlight problem?). This appears to be partially induced by fast mousewheel movements, but is not dependent on. The worst situations seem to be a XFCE-terminal producing lots of output or scrolling in Opera. Then the interrupts become inacceptable (about 1:1 on:off-ratio). The problem occured for the first time some weeks ago (when the xorg-server update was moved to current). In the meantime I have downgraded back to the previous versions of xorg-server and xf86-drivers, the problems have gone.
I use xf86-video-radeon open-source driver with an Radeon 9200, AIGLX, nothing like beryl or compiz but the default XFCE desktop without compositing. Removing the xorg.conf or using the vga or vesa drivers doesn't solve the problem. My system has the most current packages installed (nothing from testing). Frequencies and resolution should be all right (the xorg.conf worked with the old packages).
Another question: Where can I see which xorg-version is distributed in the repo? It should be something like 7.4 but the only package I have installed is xorg-server with version 1.2.0-5.
If you need more information, please ask me! Thank you for your answers.
    fi-dschi
EDIT: Now I have the xorg-server from testing installed. As I deactivated the hSync-settings in xorg.conf I now have much less trouble. Scrolling and quick movements of windows etc. now don't cause problems. Yet the screen has just become black again, without any apparent reason.
    Last edited by fi-dschi (2008-01-19 12:47:14)

I have good news: The problem now does hardly ever reappear. I have installed the xorg-server from testing and now my screen becomes black about once a day what is perfectly acceptable. As I don't know whether tis is healthful for my screen I am still interested in a clean solution. So please post your ideas if you know what the reason could be.
The german forums have given me some replies which, as yet, don't include an explanation for my monitors' interruptions. The thread can be found here:

  • [SOLVED] XOrg redirects keyboard to login

    Hello everyone.
It seems that everything I write everywhere in my system (including this post) ends up written as input to /dev/tty1, and read by login --, here I go with the details.
I have had this arch linux setup running for 2 years pretty steadily. My machine is an HP-Envy 17-j00s, I use i3wm and lightdm. Last week I noticed I couldn't open a virtual console. When I press ctrl-alt-fN the screen blinks for less than a second, then everything goes back to the Xorg environment. Also, if I exit I3 (Mod-shift-e) then I can access a virtual console from the lightdm login screen and everything seems to work fine, but I cannot open a virtual console from lightdm if I haven't logged in and closed i3 before.
Yesterday, after suspending the system for the 2nd or 3rd time in a row, every command that required elevation refused to work. poweroff/reboot with setuid flag enabled didn't work, sudo delayed for a while and then terminated with a timeout error, that unfortunately I did not copy.
Reading my journal, I found an alarming amount of messages of failed logons. After reading some of them I noticed the usernames that failed to log in were things I had typed somewhere else:
    jun 15 16:43:36 margott login[1813]: FAILED LOGIN 2 FROM tty1 FOR code~, Authentication failure
    jun 15 16:43:36 margott login[1813]: pam_tally(login:auth): pam_get_uid; no such user
jun 15 16:43:39 margott login[1813]: pam_unix(login:auth): check pass; user unknown
    jun 15 16:43:39 margott login[1813]: pam_unix(login:auth): authentication failure; logname=LOGIN uid=0 euid=0 tty=tty1 ruser= rhost=
Note the 'code~', that is something I typed in this post (the bbcode tag [ code]).
In order to confirm my suspects I opened a terminal and typed
    sudo cat /dev/tty1
and started typing in emacs. Everytime I pressed enter in the editor a new line appeared in the terminal.
I also checked that only Xorg and agetty were using tty1:
    arch@margott> sudo lsof | grep "/dev/tty1" ~
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfsd-fuse file system /run/user/1000/gvfs
    Output information may be incomplete.
    Xorg 564 root 10u CHR 4,1 0t0 1042 /dev/tty1
    Xorg 564 789 root 10u CHR 4,1 0t0 1042 /dev/tty1

    agetty 1665 root 2u CHR 4,1 0t0 1042 /dev/tty1
The recent changes I am aware of are:
    - Installing alternative drivers for my rt3290 network card, from AUR, since the card stopped working in certain cases (I needed to boot windows in order to use it again).
    - Installing fprintd and libfprint in an attempt to get my fingerprint reader working (I think this is probably the root of the issue). It seems to be unsopported by current versions.
    - Reinstalling bbswitch and nvidia drivers; Recently (since linux4?), the nvidia driver won't load unless I do this every kernel update.
    - Updates (who knows...)
I have removed fprintd, libfprint and the new rt3290 driver in a failed attempt to solve the problem.
Any clues what is going on?
    Thank you in advance!

Don't know why this happened, just reinstalled X11 and lighdtm (maybe reinstalling X11 was an overkill), everything seems to work now, but in tty7 instead of 1 as it used to,
It bothers me don't knowing what caused this failure, but I noted that login briefly started before lightdm, both in the same tty, when login should never start if X11 is present.
If anyone has a clue about what caused this I'd still appreciate it.

    Content and Apple IDs -
Content is forever tied to the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple ID to another. Apple does not merge Apple IDs. You will never be able to access your content bought with one Apple ID with a new Apple ID.

  • Can anyone help me solve the problem of text displaying very rough on my new ASUS PA279Q display monitor running off my MacBook Pro?

This is regarding a brand new ASUS PA 279Q, 2560 x 1440 IPS monitor. I'm connected via mini display port (into thunderbolt port on MacBook Pro) to display port on ASUS monitor; using cable ASUS included with the monitor. Mid 2012 MacBook Pro…full specs at bottom of this post.
I have resolution set at 2560 x 1440 which is the native resolution according to the ASUS spec. I tried the other resolutions available in my System Preferences and text displayed rough with those settings too. I've tried adjusting contrast, brightness and sharpness via the ASUS control panel and didn't solve the problem. Also tried calibrating via Mac's system preferences/display and that did not improve text display either. All the text on this monitor (no matter what software I launch, Finder, InDesign, Illustrator, MS Word, Excel, VMWare Windows XP, Windows versions of Word, Excel, Acrobat, etc, all are consistently rendering text the same way ---  ROUGH and with "HALOS" around each letter.
All point sizes of text and at various scales, display very rough on the screen. (My comparison is the retina display of my MBP and a Thunderbolt…so those two displays are my expectations.) I'm using the same MBP for both a Thunderbolt display (at work) and this ASUS at my home office.
On the ASUS it's not as noticeable when the text is on white backgrounds, but I'm a graphic designer and compose images with text all day everyday. Not to mention the specs on this ASUS PA279Q indicate it's built for the professional so I would expect better text rendering. I haven't even addressed color calibration and balance yet, because that won't matter to me if the text won't display any better than it is now.
I was so hopeful after researching all the specs on this monitor it would be a viable alternative to the glossy display of the Thunderbolt display. (Which, I do love the Thunderbolt display for it's clarity and how it displays crisp, clean text at all sizes. (This ASUS actually displays text decently if I increase the text so each letter is about 4" high. Which is pointless for practical purposes -- that'd be like doing page layout through a microscope!)
I kept holding off on getting a monitor for the home office thinking the Thunderbolt would be updated soon. I'd be sick if I dropped a grand on piece of 2011 technology only to learn a few days later an updated Thunderbolt display hit the market! Not to mention, I'm praying Apple comes out with a less reflective Thunderbolt display. The glare and reflection is the main reason I looked elsewhere for a large monitor; hence my asking for help. Hoping the ASUS text display issue can be worked out. My expectation is for it to display like the MBP retina and Thunderbolt display text. That possible?
Alternatively, I guess I could do the Apple Refurb Thunderbolt at $799. And see if there's a decent aftermarket anti-glare I could stick on it?
Thanks for reading my post. Hope someone can help; offer any suggestions? Words or wisdom?
Has anyone else had similar issues and figured out a resolution? Help!
    MacBook Pro
    Retina, Mid 2012, 2.3 Ghz Intel i7
    8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    OS X 10.8.5
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

I uninstalled those two items. It still runs slow on start-up and when opening safari, firefox, iphoto, itunes, etc. It's not snappy like it used to be. Any other ideas? Thanks.

  • After updating to Firefox 7.0.1, menu bar for Google, yahoo, Facebook (message, notification, profile, home) and others site are disabled. How can solve this problem?

after updating to Firefox 7.0.1, menu bar for Google(web ,image, video, map etc),yahoo, Facebook (message, notification, profile, home) and others site are disabled. even I cant log out from different sites cz the log out bar is completely disabled. I tried with Firefox 4;5 and 6, same problem exist . I tried by active all add ons for facebook, same problem exist. If I use internet explorer , I don't find such problem with it.
How can I solve this problem?

Thanks a lot for your swift response. And sorry if it was a bit too hectic to go through my detailed query (which I did because it was misunderstood when I asked previously). As I've mentioned above, I was informed that updating to 5.0.1 would '''require''' me to '''delete''' the current version and then install the new one. And doing so will involve losing all my bookmarks. I guess I should have been more specific and detailed there. By losing, I didn't mean losing them forever. I'm aware that they're secured in some place and deleting and installing the software doesn't harm its existence. What I meant that if I install the new version, I'd have to delete the old one. And after installing the new version, I'd have to transfer them (bookmarks) back from wherever they are. Get it? When it updated from 3.6.9 to 3.6.13, and from 3.6.13 to 3.6.18, I didn't need to follow that process. They were already present on their own.
BTW, I'm having no problems with 3.6.18 but after learning about the existence of version 5.0.1, I'm a bit too eager to lay my hands over it.
Thanks for your help; hope this wasn't extremely long.

    - Try another cable. The cable for 5G iPod (lightning connector) seems to be more prone to failure than the older cable.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
