[SOLVED]xorg1.6, cannot go back to console by CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE

After upgrading, there is no response by pressing the three keys. Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

  • [Solved]No X, No Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, cant get to console...HELP!

I did a new install and went for the ext4 option, I installed everything I usually do but went with nvidia-xcofig rather than the usual Xorg -configure, now having set everything up all I get is a blank screen, I cant ctrl alt backspace to get to console and mt laptop just reboots after about 10 seconds or so.
I have Mint installed on another partition hoping that I could get into rc.conf and ! out gdm but ext4 isn't supported! lol
What do I do, I'm well and truely stumped!
I left arch for 4 days as I got tired of things breaking but had to come back, I miss my arch, well until this peach of a problem came up
    Thanks

What would I need to edit rc.conf for?
    to comment out gdm!!
I hope you have installed hal and  read the news about disabling autoadddevices, enabling ctrl alt backspace with DontZap etc

  • Can't switch to console with ctrl+alt+f? anymore

i installed the lastest xorg packages and i am using fluxbox-cvs and i can't switch to console with ctrl+alt+f? anymore - any ideas?

no, but i did have to make that switch from keyboard to kbd to satisfy the new xorg config...i'll try all that but i am away from my box at the mo
thanks for the on topic post
(as much as i would like to flame oscar about his/her choice of wm...i can't be f*cked.  aside from the slit hang problem i have not seen a bug in cvs that has remained for any significant time at all.  besides, it's pre 1.0, it's allowed to be buggy)
    .:after thought:.
    fluxbox = overgrown bug
    kde and gnome = overgrown

  • Can't switch virtual consoles with Ctrl-Alt-Fn [SOLVED]

Pretty much exactly what is says in the title. I recently reformatted this machine, and everything seems to be working relatively okay, but for some reason Ctr-Alt-Fn simply doesn't do anything. I can't access my other virtual consoles, it's rather frustrating, and I have no idea how to proceed.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Okay, I didn't realize that chvt is the program that I want to run, so that's super helpful.
When I first tried to run that I got some error about not being able to read in file, and so I ran it as root and it worked fine.
So I added myself to the tty group, and now I get this error: chvt: VT_ACTIVATE: Operation not permitted
Interestingly, I only get this when I run it from a terminal emulator in X11. When I run it while still in the console just after boot, chvt works fine. Now I'm rather stuck again...

  • Cannot switch to tty (terminal, console) with ctrl - alt - F#

    Hi,
I have been stably using arch for half a year,
but never managed to switch to another tty.
I have three suspicions: one is that xmodmap somehow
interferes, as I switched capslock and ctrl, and also
alt and winkey (but that is not an issue on a fedora
install). second, that me switching into runlevel 5
in /etc/inittab somehow is responsible. and third, that
it has something to do with awesome, my window manager.
any ideas are greatly appreciated, thanks!
    > uname -r
    2.6.31-ARCH
    > awesome --version
    awesome v3.3.4 (Mercury)
    • Build: Sep  9 2009 18:32:37 for x86_64 by gcc version 4.4.1 (nobody@Miranda)
    • D-Bus support: ✔

Hi all and thanks for the comments,
much to my surprise it was the easiest one - xmodmap causes it,
although on fedora, there is no trouble with the identical setup,
thats why i hadn't checked earlier.
after xmodmapping, alt, ctrl, and F# keys all work independently,
    but not together.
So here goes my .Xmodmap (the 166/167 lines are for the
buttons lenovo introduced around the arrow keys and don't
always work as intended, so disregard).
    remove Lock = Caps_Lock
    remove Control = Control_L
    add Lock = Control_L
    add Control = Caps_Lock
keycode 166 = Prior Home Home Home Home Home Home Home
keycode 167 = Next End End End End End End End
    remove mod1 = Alt_L
    remove mod4 = Super_L
    add mod1 = Super_L
    add mod4 = Alt_L
Any ideas how to go on from here? Because often a
    tty comes in quite handy....

  • [SOLVED] Ctrl+Alt+Backspace Wont restart X

It just does nothing, is it disabled somewhere somehow?  I used to work before, broke from upgrade or something?

    man xorg
    Ctrl+Alt+Backspace
Immediately kills the server -- no questions asked. This is
disabled by default. It can be enabled with the -retro command
line flag or by setting the DontZap xorg.conf(5) file option to
    a FALSE value.
    add this to you xorg.conf
    Section "serverFlags"
    Option "DontZap" "false"
    EndSection

  • [SOLVED] Ctrl-Alt-F1 does not work from KDM login screen

I have some weird problems with switching to the virtual console from the graphical GUI.
    rc.conf: KEYMAP=hu
Unless I define hungarian keyboard in KDE4 also, I cannot switch to vc/1 with Ctrl-Alt-F1. When the keyboard is defined in KDE4, i can switch.
But in the KDM login screen, I am unable to switch and there is no option to set the keyboard.
    Any ideas please?

Hey, you got the point, this was the solution! Setting the option to "hu" solved my problem! Thank you!

  • X randomly crashing, cannot ctrl-alt-bksp

The first crash was a couple of months ago, and I will admit I just ignored it, especially since it didn't crash again for about a month. Then I was starting to think I might have a problem and did a bit of research. I thought turning off compositing might be the solution so I did that and it still crashed about a week later. The crashes were so dispersed that I just forgot about them, but I think I have to do something now.
Recently I installed xdm. The problem is, now when X crashes, xdm tries to get X to run again, and it goes into an endless cycle of crashes. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace does not work, Ctrl-Alt-F1 does not bring me into a terminal, and manually powering off is the only way to get out of it. Before I installed xdm; after it crashes I can Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go into a virtual terminal and reboot. (Rebooting seemed to be the only way to get it working. There were no X or xorg processes running after the crash to kill, and I couldn't startx again.)
I also noticed that I'm definately not the only one with this problem, but I can't seem to find a solution anywhere (that works for me):

No, I don't have ndisswrapper. (I have a laptop but I never use wireless so I haven't set it up yet.)
I don't believe this is a hardware problem, because I run Windows on the same computer and have never had this problem on it.
Also I should note that now X is slow to start. Before (a couple of years ago) I could type startx and then I'd immediately be in X, but now the screen turns black and flickers a little before going into X. X has had this problem ever since I returned to Linux.
While it is going to be hard to find an immediate solution to this, does anoyone know how to get the magic sysreq key working in Arch? I have a very good feeling that the magic sysreq key could save me from manually turning off the power, but it doesn't seem to work for some reason. Would I need to compile a custom kernel? (I sure hope not)

I have saved my xorg logs from right after the crash, but I don't see anything funny in them (well I'm not really the person to ask) and they are too big to fit in a post. If they are required I can try to find some way to show them.

    Hi
    Did that fix you?
I have been having the issue for a while, seems pretty random though I suspect virtual-box and/or wine to be tricker, but I have seen it crash without either, I think.
Anyways, black screen, lose keyboard, cold boot.

Don't feel like downgrading kernel or update to beta drivers if it's not the pit at all.
    edit;
running nvidia beta (180.16) for a week or so, no crash, happy it seems to be the fix but not impressed at all.

  • [SOLVED] Ctrl+Alt+S and Ctrl+Alt+O Blocked by ?

    Hi!
On a new arch+gnome system, I cannot bind any command to the Ctrl+Alt+O and Ctrl+Alt+S shortcuts in pycharm.
Going through all the shortcuts in gnomes' Keyboard > Shortcuts and via dconf-editor, I cannot find any program that binds to these shortcuts.
    Any advice?
Last edited by nonZero (2015-05-19 07:10:58)

    When using xbindkeys -k , I get this for ctrl+alt+s or ctrl+alt+o:
    "(Scheme function)"
    m:0xc + c:64
    Control+Alt + Alt_L
Which is very strange, because it does work correctly for other shortcuts, for example, ctrl+alt+a:
    "(Scheme function)"
    m:0xc + c:38
    Control+Alt + a

  • I cannot get back into my eprint account.

I cannot get back into my eprint account. It will not recognize my password and when I click on "Can't Remember Password" and go to the page where I need to enter my account email address it will not recognize it. It's the same email address that appears in the window of my new 8600. I run Windows XP. Any idea of how I can get back into my account?

    Hello Edelmann,
You may want to try some of the steps I mentioned in another thread for someone with a similar issue:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/ePrint-Print-Apps-Mobile/eprint-not-working-login-to-eprintcenter-not-w...
    Hope this helps.
If I have solved your issue, please feel free to provide kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided!

  • Cannot click back button on Internet Explorer,

    Dear Sir,
In content Management  of EP6 SP14, KM content we cannot click "back button" in IE menu.  if we click back , it will show the error.
    How to solve this problem.
    Thank you and best regards,
    Vimol

    Hi Vimol,
you can not solve this problem. The browser functions 'back', 'forward' and 'refresh' do not work properly on SAP EP 6. That's why you find the navigation links and the portal history in the portal header.
There is a feature called 'External facing portal' or 'EFP' that solves your issue by rendering one HTML file for every portal page. But you'll have some restrictions concerning business packages, KM and collaboration when using EFP.
There are a lot of threads in SDN about EFP, but here is an entry point:
    <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/43/13fd52a5732ba9e10000000a1553f6/frameset.htm">Implementing an external facing portal</a>
Please be aware that EFP comes with NW2004s SPS6

  • Cannot navigate back when browsing the quick list of playlists at YouTube

When you're in YouTube and click the square icon in the top right corner of the site to view the quicklist of your playlists, you are able to click the ">" button, but after doing that you cannot scroll back to the 1st playlist(s). There is the equivalent to ">" button, ("<") but it doesn't do anything.
I started firefox with safe mode to check if something is wrong with any addons but the problem remained.
    What can I do?

Reload the webpage while bypassing the cache using '''one''' of the following steps:
*Hold down the ''Shift'' key and click the ''Reload'' button with a left click.
    OR
*Press ''Ctrl'' + ''F5'' or ''Ctrl'' + ''Shift'' + ''R'' (Windows and Linux)
    *Press ''Command'' + ''Shift'' + ''R'' (Mac)
Let us know if this solves the issues you are having.
