[SOLVED] xterm: redraws window slowly / flickers

The problem is most obvious when reading man pages in xterm. After each action that causes the window to be redrawn (like page down) it can be clearly seen how the redrawing is not instant. It takes only a tenth of a second but the flickering can be clearly seen. Another example is wget which refreshes its output continuously: the window flickers on each update.
In contrast, urxvt redraws its window without any flickering.
Anything I can do about it?

While that indeed sounds familiar and I would love to have it fixed, it is not what this thread is intended to be about.
Here, I was talking about the time it takes to redraw the screen in xterm versus urxvt. The former to be so slow that it is flickering.
EDIT: Some update seems to have fixed this issue.

  • [SOLVED] XFCE - Incorrect windows placement

    Hi,
I'm currently having a issue with XFCE's window placement. In the settings panel, under Window Manager Tweaks > Placement, window placement is set to Center for all windows, but this option has no effect. I tried changing it to place windows under the mouse, but it also has no effect on the windows placement. Windows keep opening on the screen corners.
I checked the forums for similar problems, and found some results, but none of the solutions worked for me. Also, those are quite old topics.
[Solved] XFCE - Having Trouble Centering Windows
    [solved] Xfce4, new windows position
Xfce 4.8 xfwm4 window placement settings no longer have any effect.
This is not a big problem, but I'm kind of picky, so if anyone knows a solution to this problem, please share it.
    Best Regards,

Shouldn't you actually have it on the maximum value?
I believe the way this works is that the size (or ratio, the option is actually called placement_ratio IIRC and is a ratio of window size vs screen size) you specify here is the minimum to trigger "smart placement." If the window isn't (at least) of that size, then the default (i.e. center or under mouse pointer, as defined below) will be used. So if you want every window to use the default placement, you should set the minimum size for smart placement to be as large as possible. (In fact, I believe with a ratio set to 100 (i.e. slider to the max) it should always use the default placement, regardless of window size, which is want you're after if I'm not wrong.)
If even with the slider to the max you get new windows placed using smart placement, then it sounds like a bug I'd say.
(Also, just as FYI and though you might simply want all windows to be centered, I wasn't happy with xfwm's smart placement myself, you can see this topic for a (IMO) better alternative.)

  • Window contents flickering [Solved]

I have a problem with windows 'flickering'. Simply, when I use Blender or FreeCAD or Stellarium, contents of the window flickering when I move the mouse.
Software seems to work well (no errors or warnings), but I can't do anything.
    I use Compiz standalone + fglrx 12.4 + xorg 1.11
Any sugestions, how to fix it?
    Thanks
    Edit:
    The flickering looks like this:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3837977/blender.ogv
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3837977/freecad.ogv
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3837977/stellarium.ogv
    Edit2:
    Anyone?
    Edit3:
    Partially solved.
There was problem with direct rendering. Glxinfo prints:
    direct rendering: No (LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT set)
    so i need to run:
    unset LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT
and then run freecad or blender from command line.

Happens to me all the time -- in Safari and Twitter.app. In fact, when I registered with Support Communities just a few minutes ago, to reply to your comment, I had the exact same problem -- the Safari window didn't update while in focus. I had to click somewhere else and then come back to this window in order to complete the registration.
    Rather annoying issue!

  • [SOLVED] Xterm window title problem

    HI!
I finally decided to install Arch with openbox, because I have some free time for it and it looks really nice for me. At the beginning every problem could be solved, but now I think I need your help.
To have nice-looking transparent terminals on my desktop, started at boot, I installed DevilsPie and Xcompmgr. I started to write some fancy devilspie code in ~/.devilspie/xterm.dc:
    (if
    (is (window_name) "MyTerminal")
    (begin
    (spawn_sync (str "transset-df -i " (window_xid) " 0.7") )
In ~/.xinitrc and ~/.config/openbox/autostart I put commands starting devilspie and xterm:
    devilspie -c &
    xterm -T "MyTerminal" &
But instead of having name "MyTerminal" console still have name "severus@severus:~", according to current location. Nothing can force xterm to have different name. And here is my problem: how can i recognize my window in devilspie script, when it has different name than it should? How can I override the window title of xterm? I guess that automatic update of terminal title can be disabled, but where? I was looking, for now without effect.

Sure, i though you should match against the WM_CLASS in your DevilsPie config script and not against the WM_NAME.
The window title will be set by the global bashrc int /etc/bash.bashrc.
Look at http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/Xterm-Title.html to see the escape sequences etc.

  • Gnome 3 maximised windows constant flickering

    Hi guys,
New arch user here but with quite a few years of gentoo daily usage. I have decided to switch to Atch and I am quite happy with the so far... however I am hitting a nagging problem which I did not see described anywhere in the forum (or in google search results).
Inside Gnome whenever I maximise a window, such as Firefox or Gedit or Nautilus, that frame (window) flickers constantly and sometimes simply goes blank (as in, totally white). The gnome shell top bar remains there all the time.
I can also see a few odd and interesitng behaviours.
    1. this behavour does not occurr if the window is not maximised, even if it is resized manually to take all desktop space it does not flicker.
    2. if I switch to the gnome dark theme (using the tweak tool) then the gnome native apps like Gedit and Nautilus no longer flicker, it all returns to normal
    3. in gnome-terminal, and while using the white theme only the window top bar flickers, not the terminal are itself. Once again swithching to the dark theme solves the problem
    4. I tried to do a screencast to better ilustrate the problem and to my desbelief when I played it back the flickers where not visible on the video even though I saw them while recording
My first reaction was to play around with the driver options and I tried pretty much everything including disabling hardware acceleration but it did not improve things.
I then installed another window and desktop manager. Openbox+LXDE, and I could not see the problem anymore. At this point I started to suspect that either gnome-shell or mutter (the window manager) were playing tricks so I launched a standalone mutter session (whithout gnome-shell) and put an xterm on it. If I maximise the xterm then the whole window (frame) goes blank... (same behaviour as seen above)
So I have a feeling it is the window manager but I am a bit stuck on what to do next to diagnose the actual problem. Mutter is pretty much locked up.
Has anyone came across this issue before?
A few details on my setup:
Asus Zenbook UX301 with an Intel Iris 5100 card
Kernel version: 3.15.7-1 (standard arch build)
    And the graphics stack:
      intel-dri 10.2.4-1
      xf86-video-intel 2.99.914-1
      xorg-server 1.16.0-5
      gdm 3.12.2-1
      mutter 3.12.2-1
      gnome-shell 3.12.2-1
NOTE: I am running a "custom" version of cairo (compiled from their git repo) in order to take advantage of the recent HiDPI support in Gnome but I can tell this problem existed even without this custom versions, that is, while using the compiled version from extra.

    RE: ooo
Yes I regonise those sporadic flashes. In fact, it all started out with those flashes once in a while, again on maximised windows mainly and then the flickering got more frequent, now being constant. Interesting that I saw some of these with xorg-server-1.15* as well.
I have tried playing around with the driver options, including switching to UXA or even disabling accelaration entirely and unfortunately it does not seem to help and of course you are right, there is a noticiable drop in performance compared to SNA.
At the moment, I am still running gnome shell with the dark theme which mitigates the problem... not sure why. However apps such as Firefox or Chrome are not affected by this "colour scheme change" and therefore continue with white title bars and displaying the problem.
I am surprised I don't see more users complaining about the problem since Intel cards are quite widespread these days. Perhaos we will see more as people ugrade to xorg 1.16
This probably does not affect all cards and potentially with different severities. The only other thing that may have an impact is resolution, I have a 2560x1440 display.

    Hello,
The LXDE runs fine on my newly built arch for a couple of days, and then I must have done something (e.g. upgraded or uninstalled some packages) and now I can still log into LXDE by using slim login manager or startx command, but none of the applications will have the window borders and I am not able to move the application window around or minimize/resize the window.

    Thanks. The problem is solved.
Both openbox and lxsession were installed. The only thing missing was the missing libsvg library. Here is the relevant entries in /var/log/pacman.log (when I installed the libsvg package just now)
    # egrep -ri svg /var/log/pacman.log
    [2013-09-02 14:52] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman --color auto -S extra/librsvg'
    [2013-09-02 14:52] [PACMAN] installed librsvg (1:2.37.0-1)
so somehow it wasn't needed on a working lxde since 08/28 when the system was installed, and right after 3.10.10 kernel upgrade(Sat., 8/31), it is required to have the windows manager working properly. 3.10.10 linux kernel change log from https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel … og-3.10.10 did not return anything relevant.
Anyway thanks for the input and I'm glad that the problem was solved quickly.

  • [solved] after kernel upgrade screen flickering in gdm

    Hi,
after the recent kernel-upgrade to 4.0.1-1-ARCH i have an ugly behavior. The bottom half of my screen flickers while on gdm. After login to gnome everything is normal and I have no problems. But in gdm the screen is flickering which is really annoying. I never had this behavior before. My laptop has such an hybrid graphics stack with intel and ati. Here are some logfiles but I cant find anything suspicious. Has anyone any idea what could be the cause of this behavior or which logfile to log into?
    greetings

It happens to me as well but in xfce4 or openbox rather than on a display manager because I start X from `~/.bash_profile` upon login on tty1. If I logout and login again the problem goes away until I restart the system again.
EDIT: Upgrading to linux 4.0.5-1 did not solve the issue.

solved follow the steps from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CU … er_sharing
then go to localhost:631 and share the printer,
next go to the w7 machine and browse in the navigator archLinuxMachineIP:631 and copy the URL for the printer in printers tabs,
then add on w7 this url and select the driver.
you have to add a address reservation in your router to the machine with the printer,

  • [SOLVED] XTerm and the Terminus font

I having difficulty getting the Terminus font to display correctly in xterm.
    In .Xresources;
When I use "xterm*faceName:Terminus:style=Regular:size=10" I get missing characters, like the curly quotes in man pages.  This line is from the wiki.
When I use "xterm*font:-*-terminus-medium-*-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*" there are no missing characters (that I've found).  However, the display output (like paging a text file, for example) is much slower.  Too slow, so I go back to the missing characters config.
One other issue I've noticed, which may be related.  When I use the control-mousebutton menus, they display very slowly taking 2 or 3 seconds to draw. This happens even without loading my .Xresources file.
    Also note I'm using fontconfig-infinality-ultimate.
    My complete .Xresources file:
    xterm*Background:black
    xterm*Foreground:white
    xterm*cursorColor:green
    !xterm*pointerShape:arrow
    !xterm*pointerColor:blue
    xterm*VT100.geometry:80x32

Switching to rxvt-unicode (plus rxvt-unicode-terminfo) fixed my problem with speed and missing Terminus characters.  I'm using the setting:
    URxvt*font:xft:Terminus:pixelsize=14
The part that I don't understand is, if I specify my font as follows I get all the characters but slow display:
    URxvt*font:-*-terminus-medium-r-normal-*-16-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-*
You commented that this flavor (the XLFD form) is slow with both xterm and urxvt.
As I noted, the problem is in how the server handles the fonts.
urxvt's equivalent to xterm's "-fa" option is a feature introduced by konsole (a "xft:" prefix on the string).
Actually you don't get "all" of the characters.  To see this, use xfd.  The 10646 encoding appears to be the
original terminus (a small set of 256 characters) with a few others added.  But most of the 0-65535 range is
    filled with a filler-character.

  • [SOLVED] Xterm Japanese/Unicode Characters not displaying (??) instead

    Hey,
So I'm new to linux and arch and I've made a point of reading every relevant thread posted when I searched for 'Japanese terminal' and I haven't been able to get my terminal to display Japanese characters. All I see are ?????.

Also, when I trying inputting text into xterm using ibus's anthy, nothing gets entered, and I'm assuming that is related to the problem of not being able to view the Japanese characters properly
I'm really not sure where I'm going wrong, but it's driving me nuts and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your default xterm font is DejaVu Sans Mono. I don't know how scim and anthy may complicate setting up a locale but you do appear to have something oddly configured.
Your output from the bare locale command shows backslashed double quotes.  My output shows no backslashes:
    $ locale
    LANG=en_US.UTF-8
    LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
    LC_COLLATE=C
    LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
    -- snip --
    LC_ALL=
The only line I have uncommented in /etc/locale.gen is:
    en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
The only possibly significant difference between your xterm settings and mine is the way we set xterm to use UTF-8. I have:
    ⁣    XTerm*locale: true
    You have:
    ⁣    xterm*utf8: 2
I think they may just be different methods that reach the same end when you only have UTF-8 locales installed.  I can get the Droid glyphs to display using either resource setting.
If I were in your shoes, I would work through the Archwiki's Locale page, step by step, to see if I could silence the warnings.
If the warnings still appeared, I would step back, and do things one step at a time. If you uninstall anthy, or scim-anthy, and regenerate your locales, do the warnings disappear?  Does xterm display the CJK glyphs? If not, does regenerating the locales using only en_CA.UTF-8 work?
I wish I could offer more help but I don't have the knowledge to offer more.
If you want to see which installed fonts say they have Japanese language support, use this command:
    fc-list ':lang=ja'
Do note that what a font advertises and what you and I would call language support may be different.

  • [SOLVED]Lose Conky window shadows...

I have Xfce set to display shadows under windows, which looks great until I run Conky.  Any tips on how I can get rid of Conky's shadow and keep the rest?
Last edited by crisnoh (2008-05-04 20:16:06)

You most likely can solve this with the correct combination of the own_window and own_window_type parameters in your .conkyrc file. While I don't use XFCE I believe this problem is the same under most compositors. Try the following to solve the problem:
    own_window yes
    own_window_transparent yes
    own_window_type desktop
If this doesn't work, you might try using "override" for the own_window_type.
    Good luck,

  • [SOLVED] snapshot of window in KDE

    Hello.
How do I make a snapshot of window in KDE by a keyboard shortcut? I tried Alt+PrintScreen and it doesn't work. By PrintScreen I can capture the fullscreen (by Ksnapshot), but I don't know how to capture a window by the shortcut...
    Anyone can help me?
    Thanks a lot!

Well, in fact I changed the command in KDE Control Panel (Shortcuts and gestures) → Own shortcuts → Preset Actions → and on the right on the Action card, I modified the command to: ksnapshot --current.
Now it snapshot only a current window, not the whole desktop after pressing the PrintScreen. Problem solved :-)

  • KDE does not redraw window content

    hi everyone,
i am currently on testing and kde-unstable and have the latest packages. on my thinkpad t430 with ivybrigde graphics windows to not redraw properly anymore. sometimes it gets updated after some time or just partially. i still can click into windows and they react, just not visually. they get redrawn when i move them around or maximize them. it also seems to be a qt-only issue, since chromium works like a charm.
is anyone able to reproduce this?
greetings and thanks in advance for any help :-)

I'm having the same problem, but i had it in kde 4.10 too.
Ati hd5650 here, with opensource driver.

  • Solved!! Windows 2003 Server Enterprise SP1 and home page connection....

I solved it, thanks everybody anyway!
I did like this, I set to manual both the services OracleServiceXE and OracleXETNSListener and I put in the start up folder (it could be in the run registry key) the following batch file:
    net start OracleXETNSListener
    net start OracleServiceXE
@oradim -startup -sid XE -starttype inst > nul 2>&1
    exit
It's a modified version (just add exit in the end) of the StartDB.bat batch file in the bin folder!
There gotta be some problem with the services right of way I guess!!!
    Ciao

    Hello;
In windows there is a utiltity called "Group Policy Editor" or run this "gpedit.msc" at command line which you are able to setup your batch script at the computer logon or individual user login.
