[SOLVED] Zenbook UX32VD black screen on boot with drivers (Intel).

Helluw!
So i have done a clean reinstall after this problem first occurd to try and isolate the problem. During boot you see that grub loads the modules and every goes black. After 2 seconds the backlight is turned on and there is nothing happening, to make sure that is the case, it have been running for 20 min with no reaction.
Packages installed (that should matter):
inteli-dri
xf86-video-intel
gnome
gdm
xorg-server
To boot i am atm appending nomodeset so i can access a tty. This is removed every time i try boot, and replies with "no screen found" when added (as expected).
There are no added configs in xorg, and no other videodrivers have been installed. The xorg dosnt reply with any errors as i can see.

As documented on the nvidia forums and several topics on this forum; Kernel 3.10-3.11 is breaking nVidia graphics.
Zenbook's got a workaround by enabling "Fast CMS" in bios.

  • Fixed black screen on boot, passwords not working now

After fixing black screen on boot with the advice provided by the great community.  (Here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p1501989 )
I followed the method outlined in the post I reference.  Booting from live USB, mounting my root home and usr partitions, arch-chrooting into the root partition and then setting modeset=0 in radeon.conf and putting radeon in MODULES in mkinitcpio.conf then running mkinitcpio -p linux.  Afterwards I exited the chroot and unmounted all partitions.
This fixed the blank screen, but all of my passwords are changed.  The root and my user account passwords don't work.  So again I booted into hot usb, mounted partitions, arch-chrooted in, and ran passwd to change root pw and then su to get to my user account to run sudo passwd.  After doing so, I exit the chroot and try to unmount the partitions.  I can unmount /dev/sda2 (home) but no sda1 (root) or sda3 (usr). It says: cannot umount /mnt/arch target is busy or cannot umount /mnt/arch/usr target is busy.  It suggest lsof(8) or fuser(1) but either I use them wrong or they don't help.  If I just reboot at this point my passwords still don't work.  Why can I not unmount usr or root partitions?  It says they're busy but ps -ax shows nothing.  Any ideas?  If more info is needed I will promptly supply it, I want to get my arch box up and running again asap
    Take care fellow archers

Forgot to mention when I boot into Arch normally, it does systemd-fsck on all the partitions they all pass but after checking /dev/sda2 (home) it freezes.  The messages displayed are:
    running hook [udev]
    Triggering uevents
performing  fsck on /dev/sda1 /dev/sda1 clean xxxx/xxxx files, xxxx/xxxx blocks
    mounting /dev/sda1 on real root
    running late hook [usr]
    mounting /dev/sda3 on /usr
    running cleanup hook [shutdown]
    running cleanup hook [udev]
    Welcome to Arch Linux!
    kvm: disabled by bios
    systemd-fsck[252]: /dev/sda2 clean, xxxx/xxxx files, xxxx/xxxx blocks
and it freezes here if I switch TTY's none of my passwords work.
    Thanks in advance

  • Black screen at boot MSI Z77A-G43 with HD7850

    Hi,
I've tried everything You suggested in this topic. I've upgrade and downgrade bios (official 2.3, 2.4, 2.8, 2,9 / beta 256, 281,296) few times but still is black screen at boot. Now i'm on the newest beta bios 296 and still same issue on Sapphire HD 7850 with my Z77a-G43 board. I know for sure that sapphire working well because I've checked on other mobo with even worst PSU (400W instead 550W Volcano). Before hd 7850 I had gtx460 and swith those few times and always gtx460 works fine, so I don't understand anything right now.
Tried different slots, also clear cmos.
    Board: MSI Z77A-G43
    Bios: Version 296
    VGA:   Sapphire HD7850 1GB
    PSU:   Modecom Volcano 550W
    Intel Core i5-3570k
    MEM: Kingston 4GB 1600MHz
    HDD: 2xSSD

Can You help me somehow, maybe I did not check something else?

Do you see the same problem on bios 2.90?
The Z77A-G43 seems the have difficulties accepting HD7xxx AMD VGA cards lately.
It seems that the problem is gone. I thought of it being an ATI driver issue ~ but not even the latest didn't fix it. But since I flashed to BIOS 2.9 I haven't encountered the problem anymore. So I believe something is fixed between 2.3 to 2.9.
However my problem was a bit different that the OP has.
Oh, and I said this on other thread so I say it here too: MSI and Asus 7xxx cards haven't faced the kind of issues Sapphires are having. I'm so glad to my choice... as I almost picked Sapphire but then read comments on Newegg which weren't in favor for Sapphire.

  • Mac Pro intermediate black screen at boot after installing mountain lion

I have a 2008 Mac Pro tower, but since installing Mountain Lion I now get a random black screen at boot. Unplugging the apple cinema 20' power supply for 15 minutes seems to clear the fault. Have had no such problems with other OS until Mountain Lion, seems OK when booting to Snow Lepoard on my other drive?
    Anyone have the same fault?

Thanks for trying the help! I tried every version of start up, but with no screen it was no good..
Finally solved the problem, it was the ATI HD 2600 XT graphics card that was dying a very slow death.
Replaced it this morning with a GT120 Nvidia.
Anyone with this card should Google it, as apple did a big recall on these..

  • 970 GAMING black screen when boot on cold start, have to clear CMOS everytime

I have 970 GAMING w/ FX8320, it shows black screen when boot on cold start, have to clear CMOS everytime to enter default.
I have updated it to the up to date M11 bios. Once it boot up, it functions OK no matter whether you reboot or reset it. But after turned off a few hours (cooled down), it shows on black screen again on boot, all LED lights up OK, but I can hear the fan like keep rebooting, any idea?
    PSU seasonic 430W, GPU HD7750.

In what DIMM slots did you insert your memory?  I just got and at this moment building a new computer with a 970.
A horrible experience I had with my last build reminded me of it.  My board was am MSI A88XM-E45.  DIMM1 is blue, DIMM2 is black, DIMM3 is blue, & DIMM4 is black.  When using two sticks of RAM, it says to install one on DIMM1 & the other in DIMM3 (Makes sense... After all, it's color colored that way).
Well it would not boot.  I reseated every component and for HOURS tried almost everything.  Finally I decided to place my two sticks of RAM in the first two DIMMS and viola!
I think I will begin this build the same way.

Win 7/Z580: Black screen on boot up, before login screen?
    =======================================
I find some interesting posting in this forum. Thanks for keeping this forum to help windows/Lenovo community. I like to pick up the brain of this forum to resolve the black screen issue. I am not sure, whether it caused by virus. I use Microsoft Security Essentials. I am not able to run this in command prompt.
I started my laptop this morning & login screen showed up. Once I entered my login credentials, I heard the sound that usually plays once a login is successful, but I ended up with a black screen. After this occurred, I had to hold down the power button to manually shut down the computer. Once I started it up again, I was prompted to do a system repair, which eventually ended up with all successful outcomes, but I now have a black screen with a cursor before the login screen now. I have no idea what caused this to happen. My laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad Model Z580 (500 GB HD, 6GB RAM).
I am not able to get into safe mode or any other mode, which all leads to a black screen described above. I am able to use the "Repair Your computer" tools after pressing F8 during booting only . All other options leads to Black screen with cursor in the middle
Last Known Good Configuration leads to same
Enable Low Resolution Video (640x480) leads to same My Z580 is not responding to CTRL+ALT+DEL Windows Logo keys as well.
**** I tried SAFE Mode. It loaded couple of drivers and paused at CLASSPNP.SYS load. It went to Black screen with cursor at center.
I am able to invoke control pannel from Command prompt of working PC by typing control.
Z580 PC is not responding to control from command prompt (under Repair Your computer)  either.
Z580 is able to use the "Repair Your computer" tools after pressing F8 during booting .
Under local user login it provided Start Repair option. As I pick this option, I got the following. Problem signature
    Startup repair offline
    1 - 6.1.7600.16385
    2 -
    6.1.7600.16385

    4
    7 - NoRootCause
    os v - 6.1.7600.2.1.0.2561
    locale id – 1033
Under Admin user login, it provided system recovery options. It is not picking up the recovery point created a while ago.
Windows Memory Diagnostics is not launching and shows a black screen without cursor.
I am able to get into command prompt. I tried the following there.
I am not able to run cmd as admin
I reviewed the past posting of this forum on this subject.

I did findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt I will be glad to attach the zip file that contain CBS.LOG & [SR] tag extract (xxx.txt).
I did not any find ERRORS there, SFC ended with message saying "found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" . It is misleading. There is no [SR] tag pointing to corrupt files. Does SFC through false positive like this?

  • Quad Channel RAM Black screen on boot

So i can run my computer with Duo channel RAM DIMM slot 1 & 3, but if i add DIMM slot 5 & 7 my computer screen just stays black forever. the computer starts up and stays powered on, but no signal to screen. i have tried all 4 ram pieces alone in DIMM slot 1 and the computer boots just fine and it says 4gb ram in both BIOS and my computer properties. I have also tried just adding just one ram piece in DIMM slot 5 and the same problem occurs, just a black screen on boot.
    my specs are:

some people are having problems with that board! (no idea what is going on with it)
just for the sake of problem checking can you take out your CPU and look at the pins in the cpu socket with a bright light and a magnifier (check multiple angles) to see if any of the pins are bent?
a few of the pins are indeed a little bent out of position, would it be best to return the board or should i be able to bend them back into the correct position?

  • Black Screen on Boot using mac pro os snowleopard 10.6.6

I get a black screen on booting my macpro with os 10.6.6 after the booting is done the screen activates automatic. i do hear the startup sound but dont get the startup screen with the apple logo.
also my mouse does strange things like not responding on a mouseover juming around the screen and pressing buttons i don't press. Never had these problems before until this morning whenn i booted my mac pro. Please help

Could be your monitor power supply is going. could also be 10.6.6 so first try to get back to a OSX which did not give you problems.

  • Blue to black screen at boot up.

I'm running 10.6.8 Mac Pro and getting blue to black screen at boot up. I am only able to log in by safe mode only, please help...

    Do you get:
    Chime
    gray screen
    Dark Apple
    Spinner
Spinner spins for the usual amount of time
screen goes blue or black at the point where you would normally login?
That is exactly when the graphics card is shifted to automatic. Although that also is the point when added kernel extensions have been loaded and are made active, users report this symptom often correlates with graphics card failure.
Safe Mode does not use the driver or automatic mode, so being able to operate in Safe Mode adds credence to graphics card failure.

  • Familiar Story - tx2000 - lights and fan on, but black screen at boot up

I've been reading around that there's a common problem with the 1000 series of tablets. After 1 1/2 years, the sucker gets a black screen at boot up, yet the lights are on.
Well, almost a week to my tx2000's 1 1/2 year date (and now out of warranty), I tried to take my tablet out of hibernation. The screen was black yet the lights were on and I could hear the fan.
I tried basic troubleshooting with the online tech, but to no avail. It doesn't work, and they tell me it'll cost about $400 for it to be picked up and repaired. Anybody got a viable solution, or do I just need to go ahead and start saving for a Mac?
Thanks HP for reselling such faulty merchandise.
    http://www.mycheaplaptop.net/2009/03/never-buy-hp-laptop/

So this most likely does not apply to the tx1000 problem, but I believe the tx2000 recent problem is not related.
For those getting lights and fan on.. or perhaps on for a second or so but no boot screen or logo it maybe related to your video card driver.
Sounds crazy right?  Well your video card driver controls how your computer goes into hibernation and sleep.  If the drivers are incorrect the system may not handle this process correctly when you try to reboot it.
I'm not certain on how to get the system to boot up again, but I've done it quite a few times while trying to revive the machine.. pulled the battery.. the ram.. held the power button.. lots of cussing.. the solution seemed different each time, but eventually if you can get back into windows you'll find that either by not using hibernation/sleep or by loading the original video card drivers from the hp site, you'll avoid this problem again.
This problem started occurring for me after microsoft made available a driver update on windows update this past summer..  then suddenly everyone started having issues at the exact same time.. I've seen it blamed on simultaneous heat issues around the world caused by exactly 1 year and 2 months of dust collection on every tx2000 laptop... however I'm quite certain it's the new video drivers in combination with hibernation/sleep.
But don't take my word for it.  For more information on how video drivers can affect the boot process check this site: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-1046825.html

  • Black Screen After Boot up

My T420s (2 months old) recently has been giving me a black screen after boot up (no "Thinkpad" image is displayed during boot up).  System totally unresponsive -- I have to push on/off button multiple times.  Subsequent boot up usually OK.  Sometimes once I'm up and running, upon entering sleep mode, the machine will not wake up.
I have adjusted power management setting and and up-to-date on all drives.  HELP!!!

if this is constantly occurring this would mean something is wrong with the Thinkpad's hardware, since this laptop is fairly new, you should consider getting it fixed under warranty.

  • Black screen on boot /w four red LEDs on D-Bracket

Whenever I go switch the power off on my PSU and turn it back on, and after pressing the power button on the front of the computer it doesn't post it acts as if I kept pressing the reset button.
The D-braket shows 4 red leds (which means damaged/not installed processor).
But if I hold the power button to turn if off, then I turn it back on it works flawlessly!
Am I doing something wrong? I didn't have this problem before.
    Specs are below....
    BioHaz

I did a Google search and found this below...
This happens to be my exact same problem, it happens when you turn on the PSU switch then turn on the computer immediately after that. It seems like you just have to wait.
    Is this a common problem?
    Should I worry about this?
    Quote
The old black screen on boot up with four red LEDs on the D-Bracket
    is a fairly common problem.
So far I've only seen four fixes for the problem.
    1.  Defective motherboard (Although this is seldom the problem)
    2.  Power supply is defective, or you forgot to connect the four
wire auxiliary power connecter to the motherboard.  The auxiliary power
connecter must be connected for this motherboard to work.
    3.  Your reset switch is stuck.  Disconnect the reset switch from the
motherboard, then try to boot up.
    4.  This one is weird.  It fixed my problem, however, based on the
troubleshooting you've done, I don't hold out hope it will fix yours.
For some strange reason, some MSI motherboards will not boot
if you've just plugged them in.  Plug in the computer, make sure
the power strip and the switch on the power supply are all in the
"ON" position, then go grab a beer.  After waiting a couple of minutes,
    turn on the computer.
I know it sounds weird.  But I have the same motherboard and CPU.
If I turn on the power strip and attempt to boot my computer immediately,
I get a black screen and four red LEDs.  If I turn on the power strip and
wait a minute or two, the computer boots up every time and works
    perfectly.
    Hope this helps.

    Self-build K8T Neo/Athlon 64 - All went well and installed without
issue.  Proceed to start for first time, POST Message of "Device not
installed, Bios not found" Not verbatim but basically that.  Could not
get past that except to enter CMOS Setup, RAID setup etc.  Attempted
Win-ME Start-up disk and got to a command prompt and attempted to
install Xp Pro, started but gave error of hard drive not found though
all SATA connections were solid. Decided must be related to the BIOS
not found issue.  Downloaded latest BIOS for AMI for this board and
from command prompt typed A:\adsfI712.exe a6702vms.160  The screen
showed the Flash and then the Programming without a problem.
Restarted PC and Monitor was BLACK. Checked all conn's, replaced Video
    card etc.
Next step, Copied Flash Util: adsfI712.exe and renamed BIOS of
amiboot.rom and restarted PC holding Ctrl-Home for at least 5 mins. No
success. Attempted Clear CMOS Jumper, replaced and Restarted with
Floppy Amiboot.rom again. No Success. noted D-Bracket with 4 Red LED's
on back. I know what that means but do not know if that was there all
along. Removed CPU Heatsink and verified power, connections and
reseated CPU and replaced Heatsink w/ no problems noted. Repeated Boot
steps with amiboot.rom but still black screen throughout. Please Help!

  • The MAC OSX v10.4 just comes up with the grey apple which alternates with ?. Tried pressing "apple key"  S. Black screen appears Error Loading Drivers. No discs. Any ideas?

My son has been deleting files. Now when he turns on the MAC OSX v10.4 it just comes up with the grey apple keywhich alternates with a NO ENTRY symbo and ? symbol. Tried pressing "apple key"  S. Black screen appears Error Loading Drivers.
We have no discs. Any ideas?

You should have given your son access to a Parental Controlled Account only.   Unfortunately without the disks, and from the sounds of it, no backup, you are stuck.   You might be able to recover the information with an external hard drive and an appropriate data recovery program, but getting the 10.4 original discs is increasingly difficult.  If a Mac is Intel, only the original discs can be used to install 10.4 which you would need to call AppleCare for and hope they still have a copy of, or a cloned backup.   If it is PowerPC G3, G4, or G5, you can probably find the 10.4.6 retail disc, discussed here to Archive and install 10.4.
Before Archive and Installing, which you can do with either the original 10.4 or retail disc, be sure to attempt that data recovery.  If you choose to try to Archive and Install 10.5, and you have PowerPC, you'll lose access to Classic Applications.   You could upgrade to 10.6 if you have Intel and 1 GB of RAM, or 10.7 if you have 2 GB of RAM, but some application compatibility might be lost the further you upgrade.
