Some addresses cause Mail to hang

When I type certain addresses (always the same ones) into the recipient box, Mail freezes. The autofill drop-down list of names that begin with the same letters appears, but when I click on the correct name, nothing happens. I can't send the e-mail, and can't close it. I have to do a force quit. I have deleted the names that do this from my address book and re-entered them. There's nothing unusual about the addresses. These are addresses that worked fine until a couple of days ago. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Is your computer software up to date? More specifically, have you installed the Performance update 1.0? I had the same issue and was cleared up when I updated my machine.

  • After Yosemite, a new email message causes Mail to hang

After upgrading to Yosemite last evening, opening a "compose new message" window in Mail causes Mail to hang (crash?). I'm able to receive email messages, but  I can only send messages by booting my MacBook Air in "Safe" mode. (Opening Mail in "safe" mode does not keep Mail from crashing when I open a "compose new message" window.)
I haven't been able to get far enough to see if trying to "send" a message will make Mail crash. Just opening a "compose new message" window and trying to put the cursor in the address line, subject line, or message area will cause Mail to spin away into infinity.
I do use three Mail add-ins: MailTags, Mail Act-On and the Daylite Mail Assistant; but all of those are the most current versions and their developers claim that they are compatible with Yosemite.

Welcome to Yosemite beta. I havent been able to use Mail since I "upgraded" 4 days ago. Apparently the solution is to wait until Apple figures out what went wrong.

  • Lion email with *.pct attachments causing mail to hang

    Hey all -
Though this was not and still is not an issue for mail under Snow Leopard, it seems that messages that have a *.pct (Macs PICT format for images using Apple Quick Draw apparently) are causing Lion Mail to go off to obilvion - leaving no option but for a force quit.
What's also a pain is that since Lion Mail folds notes together, a conversation that was fine is now corrupted upon the receipt of a note with the blated *.pct file.
Under Snow Leopard on a Mac Book Pro I find no issue opening these messages or even the file itself, let alone saving it or doing most other things that I have tried.   But sending this file to the Lion Email causes a serious issue as soon as I try and open that note on the Lion Mac Pro.
As it is not easy to tell what file types may or may not be attached till you see them, this is sort of like Russion Roulet email.   When the system hangs I have now learned to bring up mail on another system - even an iPad or iPhone seems ok with this - where I can read the note, save the file or otherwise clear the problem.
Because Lion want to be extra friendly and restart from where it was - I have run into the issue where it hangs on a note and then after Force Quitting it immediately leaps back onto the same problematic note - thus the need for some other system to move the note elsewhere or delete it.
Working with different *.pct files doesn't seem to matter - those that I have tried have all caused the Lion mail to hang.  Notes have of course been sent to Apple, but thus far crickets....
Wondering if anyone here has found a solution for this.  I am guessing that *.PCT files are going to be an issue for Preview too under Lion, but actually have not tried that yet.
    Cheers

Hi, as far as I can tell, that log doesn' help, just tells us Mail crashed, and is far too long to really peruse.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Open Mail>highlight the Mailbox it is in, from the Mailbox menu, choode rebuild... any change?

  • Mail.app hangs on address autocomplete

This is an odd one. I'm having a hard time finding anyone else who's had a similar situation. Here's where the problem is:
    open Mail.app
    create new message
    begin typing in contact's name
autocomplete fills in the name and email address
get the pinwheel and Mail.app freezes
approximately 2 minutes later Mail.app unfreezes and the contact name is filled in
This happens with any name or email address that Mail.app recognizes in my address book. If I put in an unstored email address it works like usual without freezing. What's causing this?

    Thanks for the suggestions.
Address Book works just fine. I can search, edit, add, and delete just fine. No hangs, no freezes. I tried searching in Spotlight as well, everything was fine.
I went to Mail.app, pulled up the Previous Recipients window and removed all entries.  Shut down Mail, restarted it, tried out a new message, and the same problem occured.
I'm pretty sure the problem is with Mail, not with Address Book.

  • Clicking on a record in address book causes it to hang and eventually crash

There are some strange records in my Address Book that have lots of entries within that entry in the fields (not a record I created) that I'd like to delete, for every time a search ends on that record, Address Book HANGS. Sometimes from Email I can open another record using "Open in Address Book" to get out of the hang, but this is really a serious problem. How can I fix this? I try to export a backup of Address Book and it hangs. What can I do to rescue my Address Book?

    HI David,
    Try deleting this file.
    com.apple.AddressBook.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences.
Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • Links to web page in any mail message will cause Mail app to hang, and won't open Safari.

Repeatable problem on iPhone or iPad.
Any link to a web page will cause Mail to lock up and become unresponsive, and won't open the web page in Safari.
The only way out of this is to back out to the home screen, double-click on the home button, then select the Mail app icon, holding it until I can "close" it. I can then relaunch Mail and look at any message I want just like normal.  But if select any link, whether a text link or a picture in an email, the whole thing happens again.
Occurs on both my iPhone 5 and my iPad both running iOS 6.0.1.
Any suggestions that will allow me to go directly from a mail msg to a linked web page embedded within?

You ran a defective third-party "utility" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system and many applications.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Unpredictable results in some apps (claws-mail, texmaker)

Apologies in advance for the long explanation :-)
A few months ago I was trying out claws-mail. It has a great feature where you can ask it to go through all your folders, and extract unique instances of all email addresses, and put them in your address book. The trouble was, on my machine (Solaris 10, Blade 1500), the results differed every time it was run, and it always missed some addresses. I queried this in their forum, and no-one else reported the same problem. Due to this giving me a lack of confidence with the software, I stopped using it (shame, really).
I have since reinstalled the OS, and decided to put TeXmaker on it. Only I now have what I think is a similar problem. TeXmaker uses aspell as a spellchecker. It works fine under Windows, but on ths box if I repeatedly check the same document, sometimes it will find a misspelling, sometimes it wont. Aspell works fine if called directly from the command line.
It may be my brain seeing a coincidence where there isn't one, but as these both appear to be search-and-match operations, I can't help wondering if there is a connection.
Has anyone else had similar problems?
Can anyone help me (or at least point me in the right direction) with starting to diagnose the cause of the problem?
    Thanks!

  • Can't address new mail

When I got my laptop I gave my wife my e-mac, with OS 10.3.9.. Since she only wanted it for e-mail I removed most 3rd party applications , kept Firefox , Weather Dock, MacJanitor, Adobe Reader, Neooffice, Explorer, Real One Player and Printmaster.
It’s acting funny, cannot create new e-mails, cannot in fact send e-mails except as a reply to an incoming e-mail.
When creating a new e-mail message, or forwarding an e-mail, putting in the recipient's address causes the spinning beach ball to appear, sometimes as soon as you begin to type the address, and sometimes later in the typing or after the address is complete.
This also happens if you try to first enter either a cc: or a bcc.
Can enter text in Subject, or in body of message without ball appearing.
Can only send a message by clicking " Reply " on incoming message.
Also get requent beach balls in Safari, requiring Force Quit.
Restarting or starting requires disconnecting firewire cable which goes to an Airport Extreme ,which is connected to the modem, although this computer is not wireless , then restarting or starting, re-connecting cable to modem after start. If this is not done no internet connection is made.
I run MacJanitor, Repair Permisssions and Indexing monthly.
    Any clues ?

  • Unsure of what happened to my address book, mail, and app store?

My address book, mail, and app store are missing! Did they come with the computer when I bought it? (I have Mac OS X 10.6.8 and I bought it about 2 years ago) They all have different problems when I click on them. For starters, they three look like this in my app folder
Then, when i click my address book, it comes out all smushed like this: ( i had to crop out much of the image due to personal information, but all information and links are smushed)
The app store, when clicked, force quits immediately.
& lastly, the mail will not even open. no blank screen, no force quitting apple message, nothing. infact, to quit the mail program, i have to force stop it myself.
I really want to use these things and I just don't understand why they dont work, shouldnt they be included with my computer? that's the impression i was under, i didn't know i had to purchase the app store, mail, or address book? why wont they show up and what can i do to fix this?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by Find My Mac.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Safari causing full-system hang

For a while now I've been getting the SBOD irregularly in Safari, since 3.x if I remember right. I've got some time off work at the minute so I'm finally looking into this properly, and here's what I've found:
There seems to be two separate conditions. The first happens on loading some, but not all web pages, causes a lengthy hang in which the entire system (even invoking Dashboard or Spaces) becomes unresponsive. In the console this accompanied by an entry similar to the following:
    05/10/2010 08:15:47 /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari[242] ATS AutoActivation: Query timed out. (elapsed 5.0 seconds. params: queryString = {comapple_ats_namepostscript == "Helvetica-Neue" && kMDItemContentTypeTree != com.adobe.postscript-lwfn-font}, valueListAttrs = {<CFArray 0x6f5710 [0xa008dee0]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
    0 : <CFString 0xa01602c8 [0xa008dee0]>{contents = "kMDItemContentType"}
    )}}, sortingAttrs = {<CFArray 0x6f5730 [0xa008dee0]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
    0 : <CFString 0xa01603a8 [0xa008dee0]>{contents = "kMDItemContentModificationDate"}
    )}}, scopeList = {<CFArray 0x6f5750 [0xa008dee0]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
    0 : <CFString 0xa0161a98 [0xa008dee0]>{contents = "kMDQueryScopeComputer"}
(sometimes it names a font, sometimes the font name is "_")
I suspect this means some vestigial adobe product has messed my system right up. I used to use CS4 but have long since removed it. I also have Air and Flash (the current gala beta) installed. I have had fontbook validate Helvetica Neue and check all fonts for duplicates - if external disks are plugged in at this time they all spin up.
The other case is when downloading a file through clicking a link or alt-clicking a link (right-clicking a picture and saving it to the downloads folder does not cause this behaviour), and is accompanied by this much sparser line in the console:
    05/10/2010 08:25:06 kernel disk0s2: I/O error.
The files themselves can be opened, moved and copied without incident and at regular speeds, so I doubt disk corruption. I've also performed a few full clone/restores on my boot disk with no effect. My initial thoughts were to blame a long-forgotten folder action that sorted downloads into different places (including a network share, if present), but disabling folder actions has not helped.
So, any ideas? I'm fresh out.

A workaround for the font-problem seems to be to turn off ATS - it's in FontBook.
The second issue still eludes me.
    Things I have tried:
    Trashing ~/Library/Safari/
    Trashing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari*
Cleaning out every vestigial trace of anything suspect I had on my system (google keystone, logitech control centre, SIMBL, The Spark, iStat Menus, folder actions)
Interestingly, the issue is not present for the guest user, so it IS something wrong with my user account. I just can't figure out what.
Yes, making a brand new account would fix all this, providing I'm meticulous about testing the issue as I move /Users/Old/ into /Users/New/, but I'm kind of loathe to give up. It's surely something really simple!

  • How can I use my mobile me email address through Mail

I have transitioned my account to iCloud, but would still like to check my mobile me address through Mail on a computer that is still running 10.6. Due to some software that is incompatible with 10. 7 I do not plan to upgrade any time soon.

Just add a new account in Mail. Follow these steps:

  • Non-Apple browsers cause cascading system hang with clean install of Lion

It started with Google Chrome.  After a few hours of use, Chrome would randomly lock up one renderer at a time until it was completely unresponsive.  Console showed nothing conclusive in the logs, and would soon lock up itself.  Logged-in Terminal windows could sometimes get as far as a "ps auxc", but would lock up during the command output, and new Terminal windows or tabs would never get past login.  The SSH daemon would be dead in the water, preventing me from logging in remotely.  Any existing SSH connections would hang on the first command.  Activity Monitor would lock up the moment I tried to sample a process or interact with anything.  Interacting with SystemUIServer (pulling down the menu for the clock or trying to do a Spotlight search) would cause SystemUIServer to hang.  Same with the Dock.  My mouse was like the Midas of software failure: everything I touched turned to hang.  Eventually I'd be staring at a spinning beachball.  After a few (five to ten) minutes, it might perform a couple queued events (opening a window, switching to another application) but would usually become wedged again immediately, forcing me to hard restart.
I then tried installing Firefox 5, and discovered that it causes the hang fairly reliably within the first ten seconds.  Since I knew when it was about to happen, I managed to capture a few stack traces in Activity Monitor, but it was always different, and always somewhere in the kernel (usually file-system related: __getattrlist while scanning fonts one time, the open system call another).
Safari, on the other hand, works great.
I've tried performing a verification of my startup disk, which returns no errors, so although I'm not ruling out hardware failure at this point the problem started immediately after I upgraded to Lion, and persisted even after I wiped my hard drive completely and performed a clean install from the recovery partition.  It also doesn't seem to be completely the fault of either Chrome or Firefox, since they're different browsers with different rendering engines using different system frameworks.  They do both perform a lot of file I/O, so maybe that's a clue.  Another possible lead is the seemingly random errors Console will spew out while the hang is occuring.  Most recently I've gotten a screenful of '--ImageKit Error: updateGLTextureWithBitmapData: glPixelStorei returned an error : 506 ...', and before that it was 'Google Chrome Helper: CGSLookupServerRootPort: Failed to look up the port for "com.apple.windowserver.active" (1100)', "kernel: IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero".  Console spew being what it is, though, I don't know if any of that is relevant.
I figure I would be seeing quite a lot of angry forum threads if Chrome and Firefox were completely unusable on other people's machines, so I'm guessing there's something specific to my configuration happening here.  With a clean install, though, I'm not sure what it could be.  Here are detailed system specs:
24" iMac (Early 2008 -- just out of AppleCare coverage, figures) , 2.8 GHz, 2GB RAM, running Lion build 11A511 (which should be the 10.7 release version).
I would be massively indebted to anyone who has experienced or heard about this issue before and can give me something else to try.

Zeroing the disk serves no purpose in this situation.  It is a common misconception that this is required to map out bad blocks on the drive, but the fact is that 1) modern hard drives map out bad blocks as part of everyday operation, and 2) zeroing the drive involves simply writing zeros with no checks to see if the zero was written successfully, so it wouldn't know if a block was bad anyway.
It's possible the drive is starting to go bad, although then there should be some problems with SL as well.  I would recommend repartitioning the drive with Disk Utility.  Make sure it's got one partition, using the GUID partition map scheme, and format that partition as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Repartitioning should get rid of any gremlins lurking on the disk, unless the physical disk itself is dying.  And after repartitioning, install straight from the flash drive, as Shootist recommends, rather than installing SL first.
Hardware could be an issue.  It's entirely possible for an older system to work fine on slightly faulty hardware while a newer system does not.  Running Apple Hardware Test wouldn't be a bad idea.
Firmware updates wouldn't be a bad idea.  However, note that my mid-2010 MBP with the same specs is running Lion just fine, and I've never installed any firmware updates.  (Firmware updates scare me...  if my machine is running just fine, I'm reluctant to risk installing new firmware.  But that's probably just a bit of paranoia talking.  )

  • Kodo extension under JBuilder7 causes it to hang

    Hi,
I'm using JBuilder7 with Kodo 2.3.2 and it seems like the IDE freezes or
    hangs when I'm
    compiling code.
If I run JBuilder with the -verbose enabled I see the following:
    Tue Oct 08 14:12:53 EDT 2002: + JDOEnhancerTask.build

    ame.jdo,buildProcess=com.borland.primetime.build.BuildProcess@64aafa
    Exception occurred during event dispatching:
Does anyone know what could be causing this?
    Thanks in advance.

Based on the information you posted, there are two possible causes for
this problem: either one of the methods in our enhancer task is causing
the hang (seems unlikely given the undeterministic nature of the problem),
or we are throwing a RuntimeException out of the OpenTools build()
method, which is in turn somehow causing JBuilder to hang.
In Kodo JDO 2.3.3 and prior, there were three lines after the one that
caused the printout you reported and before a try-catch block that catches
all exceptions and does some reporting. 2.3.4 includes these three lines
    in the try-catch block.
So, my anticipation is that the hang will go away, replaced with a build
error triggered by the unexpected exception.
It is also possible that the hang is occurring in our code, in which case
you'll continue to see the hang. Hopefully that's not the case. If it is,
please try to give us a reproducible test case (we have yet to see this
    problem internally).

  • Switch to RAW decode 2.0 causes Aperture to hang

My apologies if this has already been posted. I didn't see this question anywhere else in the forums.
I converted to Aperture 2.0 and have a library of about 25k images. I have shot with a Nikon D100, D200 and D300 and have images from each in my library. I am pleased with the appearance of many of my images with RAW decode 1.0 and 1.1 so don't want to migrate my entire library to 2.0. I am able to convert some of my images to 2.0 with no problem. Several images, though, refuse to convert. When switching the decode from 1.0 to 1.1 or 2.0 or from 1.1 to 2.0, I get the spinning beach ball of death and have to force quit Aperture. Sometimes the image will convert when I restart Aperture and sometimes it won't. One image in particular was shot with my D100 and consistently causes Aperture to hang when changing the decode from 1.0 to 2.0.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem and get that image to decode 2.0?
    Any help is much appreciated.

  • Genius Bar puts some of my mail in Mail. I want it all to come to my Yahoo Mail. It's too confusing.

Genius Bar made some of my mail go to Apple MAIL. I want all my mail to be delivered to my Yahll Mail.

You must have either given them that email address or it is the address associated with your Apple ID?
What type of mail are you getting from the Genius Bar?
