Some advice for a prospective user please.

Hello, I have been looking through some of the documentation
on the Adobe web site and I have read several posts that have
answered some of my questions but I just want to be certain that
Contribute is the product that I need, or rather my client needs,
for a web site that I am making. Thank you very much for any advice
that you can give, I apologise if my questions are tedious and you
have answered them before, by all means refer me to another post
that is relevant to my questions.
Um... I am making a web site in Dreamweaver. Can I upload the
web site in the same way as I would if I was not using Contribute
and then allow someone else to come along and edit the page using
this software? Or put another way; can you use contribute to edit
any page on the web providing you have the appropriate access?
I read in another post that the designer does not have to own
Contribute, only the client who will be editing the site does. What
I want to make sure about is that as the designer I will not have
to do anything different to what I would normally do and all of the
Contribute use is at their end.
Thank you very much for your help. It is much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Adam.

Hi Adam,
To answer your first question:
Yes, Contribute can connect to the same remote site that you
use with
Dreamweaver, and you're exactly right that it can be used to
edit only
those pages the Contribute user has permissions to. In my
company I'm
the only person using Dreamweaver, as the site administrator,
and
everyone else uses Contribute. My use of Dreamweaver is
basically to
create templates and make some changes that aren't possible
in
Contribute (such as folder renaming and mass file deletion),
but any new
pages I create using Contribute as well, though I could use
Dreamweaver.
for your second question:
I'm not really sure. My setup uses Contribute Publishing
Server (CPS)
and this connect to Active Directory, allowing me to assign
users to
roles within Contribute. Now, while Dreamweaver does let me
administer
the website using Contribute screens, I don't know if I could
do this
without Contribute installed on the same PC (which it is).
Possibly,
Yes.. but I don't know.

  • Some advice for newbie backup-ers?

    Hello, I've just come across a few dollars to spend on a drive to backup my macbook pro. I am fairly new at this so would appreciate some advice.
    I considered the 1T Time Capsule but looked at some reviews and too many people would not reccommend due to it failing after a year. Plus I think I could probably get a better Seagate drive for less money.
    First question, can I still use time machine with a Seagate external hard drive? Or could I somehow use migration assistant with it - to save my hard drive as is on my external?
    I've also read a little about cloning and downloaded carbon copy cloner to do this but am not sure how it works. Would I just save a clone on my external and then copy it over to my mac in the event I lost my data? Does this take a lot of time? Would that be quicker than time capsule?
    Ohh so many questions I know. Its just all so overwhelming and I want to make the right choice. Basically Im after non-complicated, easy, one-click approaches to backing up - similar to how easy migration assistant is. But it would also be good to have the option of manually transporting important documents like assignments to a backup drive. Thanks for reading!

    those early problems haven been ironed out. the newer models are quite reliable.
    Plus I think I could probably get a better Seagate drive for less money.
    consider a [refurbished|http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC343LL/A?mco=MTY5MTQ5Njc] unit.
    First question, can I still use time machine with a Seagate external hard drive?
    yes, if the drive is properly formatted. check out [this_|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/2.html] user tip.
    Or could I somehow use migration assistant with it
    MA is for migrating data from one Mac to another.
    I've also read a little about cloning and downloaded carbon copy cloner to do this but am not sure how it works. Would I just save a clone on my external and then copy it over to my mac in the event I lost my data?
    you would clone your cloned system from the external back to your internal HD, yes.
    Does this take a lot of time?
    depends on how much data you're cloning. via a firewire 800 connection, cloning 60 GB takes about an hour (YMMV).
    Would that be quicker than time capsule?
    again, depends on how much data to backup. if you're using an ethernet connection instead of wireless, it will be faster. the initial backup will take rather long, but subsequent backups are incremental and take much less time.
    you might find the following enlightening: [_*Time Machine vs. Clones and Archives*|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/Clones.html]
    Basically Im after non-complicated, easy, one-click approaches to backing up
    IMHO, that would be time machine.

  • Why did i move! anyone give me some advice for get...

    Ok, ill start at the begining, i have had broadband for years, and having been with freeserve, Zen, and most recently sky i decided to move over to BT.
    This was purely because im cancelling sky TV so it didnt make sense to keep broadband with them.
    I have enjoyed speeds the last couple of years of just over 5mbs thanks to all the work zen put in getting my line working wonderfully. When i moved to sky, they changed nothing and this continued.
    I moved to BT on the 24th, and the speed was around 700k, i called and complained and they said my line was in a recovery state and this was standard procedure. In 2 to 3 days time my line would be wonderful.
    I have called a couple of times since then as my line keeps dropping to be told this is normal and the same "recovery state" blurb given to me.
    I understand the line dropping when you move ISP, but i have never had a connection so slow.. its got slower every day since being activated. when its actually up (which is less than its down) i now get speeds <100k at very best.
    I want out, i have agreed a contract, but there not providing a service, i cant even find a number to complain on!!!
    Day 5 of my new internet connection and i get told this recovery state will last 10 days. we use the internet a lot in my house, there are 4 of us who i would say are dependant on it, and what BT are providing is unuseable!
    anyone point me in the right direction for complaints or just getting out now?

    that's the nature of forums - people who come to forums like yourself (and me) came because they were having a problem and were hoping someone on the forum could help.  You don't get people coming to a forum and posting how great there connection is and that applies to all ISPs
    If you want some help/assistance from the forum can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester http://speedtester.bt.com and post the results.
    are you connected to the NTE5 master or test socket or somewhere else? Do you have any phone extension sockets in your home?
    Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Some advice for this newbie please ... writing Network in Java

    K, i'm new to Java, and i've hardly done much Object-oriented coding but I have the basic concepts. University modules too focused on C, Visual Basic programming. =o( Currently, on Internship, I've been tasked to write Mobitex Network in Java, poll-driven. Have spent 3 weeks breathing Java =P, camping in Java Developer Connection too. =o) (enjoyed the exchange of ideas especially the post on "Java sucks")
    My questions are:
    1) Does Java have an indexed library like MSDN for VB? or is there any other way i can search for
    method names, their uses and the syntax? (the case-sensitivity of Java had me crazily
    debugging a simple test application) The lists of libraries available eg java.lang.string.*.
    2) Is there a help somewhere where i can check what my errors are referring to? I'm using
    JDK1.3.1_02 and Forte for Java, Community Edition version 3 for my IDE.
    3) I have plans to design simple user-interface, one that would probably look dos-like but with
    some buttons and forms coz the network has lots of functionalities that involve loop-back tests,
    choice of sending data, control or information frames. Duration to complete this project is 2
    months. Please suggest the best approach I should tackle this assignment and perhaps the
    links and softwares you'd recommend.
    ps: i chose this project over the rest to specifically learn Java. I knew the learning curve is steep but I seriously do want to get to know Java better, like a friend. And I'm looking forward to the sense of satisfaction awarded when I complete the application program. Thanks for your patience and words of advice. =)

    oh, ok then... I assume, then, that you have access to the C and/or C++ code.
    Is the C++ code written in "good" OOD style? Or is it C wrapped in some C++ syntax? If it's OO, without multiple inheritance, then you just have some porting to do. Painful, but not as bad as writing a Mobitex implementation on your own.
    Of course, timing is everything in this environment; depending on your platform (J2ME, I'd guess), you're gonna have to worry about meeting real-time-ish committments...
    I'd concentrate on getting the Mobitex functionality solid first. I'd assume that there are (some?) reference applications that have been created against the C & C++ implementations. Port those, or use those as inspiration for your own (little!) app...

  • Just looking for some advice for a Networking 'noob'

    Hey folks,
    I manage the post-production workflow for a small agency. We're getting ready to move into a new office space, and we'll be looking to make some upgrades to our video workflow and data management.
    At the current time, we have two G5s (PowerPCs) and a new Intel Mac Pro. We may be adding a fourth (or even fifth) workstation. We shoot everything on the DVX (24p DV), but we're also (strongly) considering upgrading to an HD workflow and investing in a few HVX packages so we can have the option of shooting 720p. We will NOT be shooting anything higher than that, (no uncompressed, digibeta, no 1080p, etc.)
    Right now, when we need to access media from other computers, we simply use the AppleTalk feature of our internal ethernet and mount the drives remotely. This actually works fairly well, and we usually don't have any issues with latency. But it becomes frustrating at times when we want to search for a particular media file or FCP project file and we can't remember which drive it was stored on. We'd like to have all of our editing workstations be able to access the same media simultaneously in one shared 'Mother Ship.'
    I guess my question is: What should we get? Final Cut Server? G-Raid? Xsan?
    I'm not really an IT guy, so I can't say I really know the differences between these different options, but any advice you can offer would be most appreciated.
    And as for budget, we're prob looking to spend something in the range of $8,000-$10,000 dollars on this new system. (that's NOT including the HVXs, of course.

    Ok... here we go, not sure what you are doing except editing DV right now,
    but this will work for HDV, DVCPROHD, Uncompressed SD and some ProRes
    as long as you have a good Gigabit Router to transfer files. Please consult
    a professional if this sounds scary to you.
    *Redundant FILE SERVER* for project files, important stuff
    1. Install at least 4GB RAM in G5 #1 (max $200)
    3. Make sure there are two identical SATA drives in the G5. Install OSX Leopard Server ($499) on 1 drive. Use Carbon Copy Cloner (Free... http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html) and clone
    the main drive to SATA drive #2 when drive #1 is set up completely. Use drive #2 as backup.

  • Some advice for a Newbie?

    I'm a real newbie to Java. I just started playing around with it last week.
    I am exploring the possibility of using Java to download data from the internet - one site in particular.
    At this website I am required to enter data into two textboxes (an account number and meter number). The website then gives me a table of electricity usage for that account. I would like to automate this process.
    I have looked at Sun's tutorial on Java and the internet and used one of its programs on my target website, but so far have only been able to return the html for the data input page.
    Is what I am trying to do within the realm of possibility? If so, can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thank you for any advice you are able to give.

    it's definitely within the realm of possibility. You need to submit a request to the website your connecting to based on the value in the action field of the form you are currently downloading.
    so, if you are contacting www.madeup.com, and their form tag says <FORM action="/cgi-bin/form.pl>
    then you've got to make a url connection to www.madeup.com/cgi-bin/form.pl
    next, you've got to see if they want you to use the GET or the POST format for summiting your data. That is also indicated in the form tag. For GET, you can just append variables to your query, eg
    www.madeup.com/.../form.pl?user=fred&pwd=ned
    for POST, you've got to submit data with the header fields

  • MBP Purchasing Advice for a G5 user

    Hi there. I'm a former PC user and I recently inherited my son's PowerPC G5 with 24 inch display that I absolutely love. it has OSX 10.4 and I use it for alot of graphics applications...all of the Adobe Creative Suite CS4 stuff. web sites, photoshop, Indesign, etc. really love that computer.
    but i need portability for travel, which i do alot of. i'm struggling with which MBP to purchase. I'd like to continue to use the G5 at home, and have it be my primary graphics station, and only use the MBP for travel. but the MBP still needs to be able to run all the CS4 stuff. so, which MBP should i buy and is it silly to keep using the G5 for my primary work? it works really well for all of my needs.
    also, i understand the G5 is stuck at OSX 10.4 and can't be upgraded higher. will the new MBP with snow leopard introduce complexities when i am going between the two, exchanging files, etc?
    thanks for any advice.

    I'd recommend the 15 in MBP. And in particular, if you can, the 2nd MBP. For several reasons. One will be screen size. Especially with graphic programs, big screens are invaluable. I couldn't do my web design on a tiny 13 in screen. The 15 in also have a bigger battery which will help with travel.
    The 13 and the first MacBook Pro all have the 9400 graphics card. Which isn't as good as the previous graphics processor (8600). If you got the step up MBP it would have the 9400 and the 9600. The latter of which is definitely better. This allows for the battery to last longer on the standard graphics processor, but can easily switch over to the discreet graphics card when it needs to.
    I haven't really done much with 10.4 so I am not sure about software. If you still have the discs yes! You should just be able to reinstall the programs on your new computer. As long as the software is generally newer and supports leopard, it should support snow leopard. There is a list of software that has problems available here (http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/).
    As for exchanging files! You should be good there. It's still going from a Mac to a Mac. Even going to windows there usually isn't a problem.
    Hope I helped!

  • Need some advice from MacBook Pro users

    Hi all. I've been using Windows for as long as I've ever owned a computer. I have a background in graphic design and finally came down to needing a notebook. After some careful consideration I've decided to go with a Mac. I have used them before in the past on job and off and I've had some bad and good experiences with the Mac.
    What I am trying to figure out is I have heard the Macbook pro has some heating issues. I am also not sure if I really need the macbook pro. I could easily just use the 13' inch without the graphic card. What I typically do is design in photoshop, dreamweaver, surf the net, etc. Basically it is a business computer. I don't use it to play games and as such I want to make sure I am making the right choice.
    Is the Macbook 15' right for me? I am worried about over heating issues.
    Also I could easily buy the 13' and just bump the ram to 2 gigs. I just wanted to see what everyone thought. Any advice?
      Windows XP

    I just updated to the MacBook Pro 15 from a PowerBook 12, the MBP does seem a bit hotter than the PB but its not that bad of a problem, at least not when using Photoshop and Illustrator.
    However, in terms of design, if you will be using the notebook as yoru primary design machine without an external monitor, the MBP 15 would be a much better choice. I'm an art director and I only use the notebook when I'm on location, most of the actual design work is still done on a G5 desktop. The MBP's screen is actually big enough to be productive in Photoshop and other design software, but the smaller screens like 13" can be a bit tough on the eye in the long term, managing screen real estate can also be annoying. Not to mention, the new glossy screen is very beautiful.

  • WRT54G - Advice for XBOX 360 users

    My Advice - Upgrade the router's firmware using a wired connection before you do anything else.
    I just got this router as a replacement for a broken-down d-link router.  I had issues with the 360 the first night I installed it.  Everything else worked (PCs, Wii).
    Symptoms:
    Router wouldn't assign my 360 an IP address through DHCP
    The XBOX live connection was all quirky
    NAT level showed as moderate in the 'Test Connection to XBOX Live'
    360 couldn't see the mediaCenter PC correctly
    I am using a wired connection from the router to the 360.
    Because DHCP wasn't working, I set the IP and DNS manually.  That seemed to have half-worked.  It would show me as signed on to live though the games would fail to perform on Live.
    Solution:
    I decided, before following any of the other advice out there - which in some cases can really comprimise your network's security - I decided to upgrade the router's firmware.
    Once I did this then set the XBOX 360 IP and DNS back to Automatic, the 'Test Connections' on the 360 were successful and I was playing blazing angels and nba 2k7 online with no lag, etc...
    I did not have to make any other adjustments after the firmware upgrade.  NAT Level also changed to OPEN when running the 'Test Connection to XBOX Live' from the 360.  No DMZ, no port triggering, and no port forwarding necessary.
    Background:
    Just to give you an idea of how many devices I'm running through this router at my home:
    3 wired desktop PCs
    1 wireless desktop PCs
    2 wireless laptop PCs
    1 wireless Nintendo Wii
    1 wired Xbox 360
    All devices are working just fine.
    I've been working with routers for around 12 years (large and small implementations).
    I got this router for around $50 and really like the features for the price (especially the WPA2 and wireless MAC address filtering).

    Ok I have a new problem,(I have a topic on xbox 360 and nat settings)I got my NAT to open, was able to play with my friends that I couldn't before.Then last saturday, he brought over his xbox 360 and we played all night. Then the next day,with his 360 back at his place, we try to join and its the same problem all over again,can't join his party.His settings was set to OPEN before,when he put it back at his place,now he had a MODERATE setting,without changing anything on his router config.(should still be OPEN). Anyone have any walk arounds for this problem,or any help? I only understand so much of this networking stuff.

  • Some advice for a windows person who wants to switch :o

    Hey, here's the deal. I work in a computer shop and I've been looking at Mac's more and more and I'm beginning to love them.
    I'm going to university soon and so I will be purchasing a laptop, and I am thinking about getting the new Macbook with an Intel processor. The reason for this choice is so I can dual boot Windows.
    I really like what I have seen with Mac os, but having Windows there for when I need it would be fantastic, too.
    How stable is XP running on the new Macbooks, will the drivers provide almost full functionality (i.e. display, networking, usb, sound etc.)?
    Do you think Mac would be suitable for me at University, taking into consideration integration with the school's windows based network and also the wireless network in my halls of residence??
    I really would like to switch to Mac now that I can use Windows when I need to, and have MacOS for the majority of usage, whilst also having an extremmmmmmely cool looking machine.
    Any advice or general info aswell, would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    From here:
    Are there any Macintosh features that I should not expect to work when running Windows XP on an Intel-based Macintosh computer?
    Even after installling the Macintosh Drivers CD, the Apple Remote Control (IR), Apple Wireless (Bluetooth) keyboard or mouse, Apple USB Modem, MacBook Pro's sudden motion sensor, MacBook Pro's ambient light sensor, and built-in iSight camera will not function correctly when running Windows.
    Macs work fine on the Windows network at the university I went to, including the wireless networks in the dorms.

  • Nead some advice for using DDE icons

    Hello everyone,
    1°)I am using DDE in my programm. I need to get and send many information to the instrument I am communicationg with. I would like to know if have to use the DDE start,check, or poke icons for each piece of info I want to get? Because that takes a lot of space in my prorgam. Is there any other way?
    2°) I am also looking for some DDE application notes. Don't seem to able to find any on the NI web site...any idea?
    Any help would be great,
    regards,
    David

    Actually, the best place for info on the DDE VIs is Microsoft's website. The functions within LV are apparently very simple wrappers around the Windows function calls so you follow the basic procedural flow in MS's docs and it should work.
    Typically you have to open a session specifying a "service" and "topic", you can then "request" (read) or "poke" (write) "items".
    And yes, you typically have to read or write one value at a time. It all depends on the "items" that the DDE service you're accessing implements.

  • Some advice for full screen

    Ok, don't know if anyone remembers on the old consoles such
    as the commodore 64 and the Amiga's when a game would load, the
    screen would be a series of lines of colours scrolling up and down
    the screen randomly. No, i want to make my webpage so that when the
    page opens... that what you get, no matter what size the resolution
    of the users screen. Is there anyway of doing this in flash, and if
    so what size should i make it? thanks

    I'm not sure if this is the preferred method or not, but you
    could use some javascript to capture the size of the user's browser
    window and then resize your flash object accordingly.
    This is the script to capture the height and width in pixels
    of the user's open window:
    if( typeof( window.innerWidth ) == 'number' ) {
    //Non-IE
    myWidth = self.pageXOffset;
    myHeight = self.pageYOffset;
    } else if( document.documentElement && (
    document.documentElement.scrollLeft ||
    document.documentElement.scrollTop ) ) {
    //IE 6+ in 'standards compliant mode'
    myWidth = document.documentElement.scrollLeft;
    myHeight = document.documentElement.scrollTop;
    } else if( document.body && (
    document.body.scrollWidth || document.body.scrollHeight ) ) {
    //IE 4 compatible
    myWidth = document.body.scrollWidth;
    myHeight = document.body.scrollHeight;
    At the end of the function containing this, you would resize
    your flash object. If this doesn't make sense, check w3schools site
    and get some information on the DOM.

  • I need some advice for my upcoming June purchase.

    Ok, In June, im going to be purchasing my first Mac. Now I have used Macs before, tons of times. I work on a powerbook G4 everyday. Im familiar with the whole Macintosh workings. Basically, im just saying that Im not clueless with a Mac.
    So anyway, im buying a MacBookPro in June. My question is about getting it to run the best it can. I already know that I dont have to worry about viruses/spam/spyware or anything like that. but whats the best thing to do from the beginning to get the most out of your MBP?
    I believe I read something about doing a fresh install or something first. and disabling printer drives...how do I do that and how does it affect the MBP? My main uses on it will be Video Editing, Internet, Sound Recording, and iTunes. Im just asking if anyone can give me some ideas that work to better the computer and get rid of as much things that I wont ever use as I can. I appreciate anyone who attempts to help me out on this.
    After reading up on the internet for a couple hours, I finally got my iPod runnin' like a street racer. I customized the settings perfect so that I only use it for what I need it for. But my MBP will have more to it, and cost a bunch more!
    Once again, in advance, thanks for anyone who can help.
    Dell   Windows XP   iPod 5G

    Woh...Slow down. You are trying to shave programs off before you even try them.
    You will start off with a fresh install. The people who advise that are telling people who have tweaked their system to do a fresh install.

    I'm going to buy a Nokia N95 from a GSM Store near me and I wish to check first if the phone it's original. I know that there are some things I must check ( The star *, the seventh and eighth digit from IMEI, the size of the camera, if there is written Nseries on the back of the phone,under the Nokia logo) but anything else I don't know....so is there anything that I can check which is only, and only  for Nokia original phones....something that the replicas don't have? I'm asking this because I deeply want not to get hoaxed.
    Thank you so much for your help,
    David

    look carefully under the battery where it was make if its not Hungary or Finland it might be fake...
    look at the menu and touch the landscape menu and there you can see if it works good or its a fake..I had an N95 and it was made in finland at everything was ok it was original but before i bought it I payed attention at battery, production country, camera settings and qualitty, the slide and the quality of screen..If its fake you can observe pixels on the screen faster then at the original phone...
    I hope this would help you
