Some alternate layout questions CS6

I have been meaning to ask this as I have an issue coming up again and need to know how to proceed.
I have a .indd in A4
I need to do an alternate layout in pixels 600 x 1024
I was able to create this but the artwork and the text falls outside of the bleed box area. So my question is how can I create an alternative layout from an A4 to a 600 x 1024 pixle portrait and at the same time get the art work to display correctly within the boundries?
A tutorial available on this?
Thx

Click on the page tool then hover over your text box/object center, the following statement will be shown "The object width is locked. Click to change the object width as the page changes width" and a similar statement will display on the object height. Hover on the box/object edge, the following statement will be shown "Space is flexible between object and page edge. Click to pin the object relative to page edge" (those are the 2 options responsible for displaying your objects correctly). Then from the page panel  drop down menu choose create alternate layout and under options choose "Object-based" in the liquid page rule drop down menu. Remember to create the alternate layout after setting your objects for changes to take effect.

  • How to get notified of creation of Alternate Layout on CS6 ?

    Hi,
I'm working on a plugin for InDesign CS6. I need to get the notification whenever alternate layout is being created on a document.
    Can anyone give any pointers.

    Dear Angnam,
PLD has no support for SQL. There is no direct field to get the cost. You may need add a UDF to get the value through FMS query.
    Thanks,

  • Alternate layout question

I have finished the vertical layout of my entire issue and want to know complete the horizontal part of the issue.  I went up to alternate layout and the horizontal design showed up and i edited it and saved file.  I updated the article in my folio builder, but when i update my issue in adobe content viewer and update it the horizontal version does not show up when rotated.  Do I need to do something else before it will show up?

When i hover over folio in builder it does say landscape and portrait.  In my pages layout they are both there.  but in folio builder it is only showing the portrait version?  So for some reason the landscape version is not showing up in there.  When i tried to add layout from the pull down i got this error.
    Content generation error.
[Error: The page size aspect ratio must match the folio aspect ratio.]
The layout was created automatically in alternate layout and is 1024x768.

  • Publishing an alternate layout in InDesign CS6

I've create a 3 page sample file to show a client how they can re-purpose their InDesign print file and use InDesign to create alternate layouts. I've created a test file that has 2 alternate layouts. One is the standard iPad portrait view and the other is an iPad landscape view. I simply want to output this file as a PDF that I can show to the client on an iPad. How do I output or publish this file so that when view on an iPad it will show the landscape layout in landscape orientation and the portrait layout in portrait orientation?

Small correction: You CAN create EPUB3 fixed layout if you have CS6, but it can be a painful process. Anne-Marie Concepcion explains how in her video on Lynda.com:

  • AwesomeWM: Some layout questions

    Hey guys,
I've been customizing Awesome and really loving it so far! But I'm a little confused about how some tiled layouts are handled.
Basically, I modified the original table of layouts to just include
    awful.layout.suit.floating,
    awful.layout.suit.tile,
    awful.layout.suit.max
but soon found that in the "tile" layout, the section of screen with the master window never accommodates more than one window. Then, I found that "awful.layout.suit.fair" is almost PERFECT, except:
Resizing doesn't work - neither using Mod4+{h,l} nor using Mod4+Mouse3
There doesn't appear to be an "awful.layout.suit.fair.left" or "awful.layout.suit.fair.right", despite the fact that the layout is asymmetrical
Hopefully that makes sense. Basically, what I really want is a mirror-image "awful.layout.suit.fair.left" which also allows dynamic resizing, using either mouse or keyboard.
Therefore my question is: Does this already exist? If not, can I create a new awful layout pretty easily? Is there documentation besides luadoc that I should check out?
    Thanks so much!
P.S. I actually found one post that suggests that in the 'fair' layout, the sizes are fixed -- why would this be, and how would I have found this out? The documentation doesn't describe the layouts at all.

  • Alternate Layouts amd Document Intent CS6

Is there a way to create an Alternate Layouts with different Document Intents? I cant't see it around and would like to backup this information.
This would become handy when creating a printed book and e-Book from one InDesign Document. Hope I miss something, because I love the LiquidLayout/Alternate Layout Features!
    Regards,
    Gregor

    Hi Syed,
Thanks for the crash dump. I analyzed it at my end and it seems that AI CC 2014 goes into non-responding state due to some printer (printer driver) conflict.
Can you try the following two workarounds and let me know the end results:
    1) Remove all the connected/installed printers.
    2) Update the printer drivers for the connected/installed printers.
    With Best Regards,

  • Buttons do not appear in alternate layouts

    Hi
I have a 45 page app.  Each page has button on it that call other pages, play video, or call an MSO
When I create alternate layouts not all the buttons appear on the new layout
the buttons that DO appear are:
    1. A button that calls n MSO with two states
    2. A button that calls a video to play
The buttons that do not appear in the new layout are buttons that call another page in the book.
I have hundreds of buttons in the app/book.  All the buttons are on their own layer in each document and that layer is at the top of the layer panel.
How can I make the buttons show up on alternate pages?
If I have to copy and paste the buttons to the new layouts - is there a method that the copy and paste command actually keeps the link, so I don't have to relink every button on each of the new layouts... that is a big nuisance.
So.. I guess I have two questions:
    1. How to make the buttons automatically appear on alternate layouts
    2. If they won't appear how can copy and paste have some brains?
    thanks
    Deb

Since alternate layouts and buttons are core InDesign features, moving this post to the InDesign Forum.

  • DPS -- Updating articles with alternate layout page.

I am working on some DPS stuff and ran into an interesting work around... But I'm not sure if is actually supposed to work.
I am building a single (_h) orientation folio with single orientation articles and wanted to have a "scratch page" to work on in my documents (just space to create artwork and link it to hidden areas in objects states so my writers didn't have to go digging through object states to edit pieces).
So I created an "Alternate Layout" in my pages panel and made it whatever size I wanted. When updating the article I was pleased to see that the Alternate page that I had created was not shown in Adobe Viewer on my iPad.
IS there anything flakey about this workaround? Others that have tried this same work around have been given errors when trying to update their articles in folio builder, and I have not yet received that "content generation" error. WHY?

@Dave – since baseline grid is a document preference and not a page or a spread preference, this is not possible.
What is possible, is to set an individual baseline grid per text frame.
Or you could try to set your baseline grid to a common factor for both layouts, if that is possible at all, but there could be unwanted side effects…
For DPS usage I do  recommend not using the baseline grid altogether.
@Neil – "Baseline Grid" might be an InDesign-specific feature, but most DPS users will have to work around the fact, that it is not a page or spread property, if they are using InDesign CS6 with alternate layouts.
Adobe should change that in a future version.

  • Error with styles when using Alternate Layout

I'm trying to use the new Alternate Layouts function in CS6 to create a template for both 8-1/2"x11" and A4 sized pages. While trying to create the alternate layout, I receive an error that says, "One or more styles were not mapped. Cannot create a mapped style when one of the source styles is based on another source style."
I think this means that InDesign doesn't like that some of our styles are based on others - for example, Figure references are based on Body text, with bold-italic-centered changes. I have changed all the paragraph styles to be based on "[No Paragraph Style]" instead of being based on other styles, yet I still get the error. What should I do? Thanks.

That's a great find Mike. I just ran into this problem myself and sure enough, removing the nested styles did the trick. That being said, I didn't get the error when creating the first Alternate Layout (even though the source layout contained nested styles). I didn't receive the error until creating the second Alternate Layout. I ended up removing the nested styles, creating the Alternate Layout, then putting them back in. Fortunately with this project, I don't have a ton of nested styles. If I did, it would be a huge pain. Anyone at Adobe able to comment on this issue? Known issue?

  • Cannot access iPad or other tablets presets when creating Alternate Layouts

I'm all for repurposing but here's what bugs me. Suppose I create a cover for some magazine. Next, I'd like to create an Alternate Layout to see how the design would look on a tablet device. Fair? Suppose the Cover size is standard letter size. When I launch the Create Alternate Layout command, the size menu only lists "print-based" formats like Tabloid or Legal or A4 and so on. Why, on earth, wouldn't the "Digital Publishing"-oriented size not be listed there? Like Surfacei or Pad or Android or Kindle or Xoom? I mean, what's the point of this command? I have no choice but to choose "Custom" and enter 1024 pixels by 768 pixels, for instance. Yet, when I'm done typing, InDesign CC immediately converts to some equivalent "inches", like 14 some odd inches by whatever? It is unable to retain my custom units? Why?
I'm curious to know what rule is applied to convert between these units systems at this point? Is it standard 72dpi? I can't figure this out.
Another thing that bugs me in Creating Alternate Layout is the business of Bleeds. Suppose again, in my Cover design, that I use the standard 0.25" bleed margins, how can I get rid of them in the Alternate Layouts I create? Suppose again for a tablet design? I have not found a way to tell InDesign about resetting the bleeds on that Alternate Layouts. The net effect is that, the generated alternate layout looks silly on screen, with its stupid red guides that extends all around the page.
    So that's my question. Thank's.

"The assumption is that a document will either be used for Print or for Digital Publishing or for Web".
So, it is an either or proposition.
I probably have a fantasy or a grossly preconceived notion of what Alternate Layouts are all about.
But blame it on Terry White and the other "evangelists", in AdobeTV and Tutorial videos who position this feature with the very purpose of doing a Print to Web to Digital Publishing workflow. It a user *has* to chose, at the onset, the intent of a given document then, this feature, in my eyes, has limited value.
I confess I'm not knowledgeable in all of Adobe's new products, in particular those designed specifically to "port" content from one type of media to another, like from Print to Digital. It's entirely possible that Adobe already has a solution for this "problem", that many, in the print business face, day in day out. I gather that if InDesign was actually delivering on this functionality, maybe it would actually be cannibalizing Adobe's other products, that are specifically designed with this functionality in mind?
So, I won't say that this feature is broken but as far as allowing a true "purpose-independent" kind of workflow, we'll say that Alternate Layouts will allow "portability" within one kind of media or another, not accross various media types.
Thank's Steve, for your patient and kind help.

  • Indesign cc. Alternate layout. Master B.

    Background.
    New > Document > web.
    I am creating an .epub.
    QUESTION.
Does it matter if the layout is vertical or horizontal in Indesign CC ?
I followed Anne Marie Concepcion's tutorial for creating an Alternate Layout.
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/visual-design-cs6/working-with-alternate-layouts/
It is actually for Indesign CS6.
I Created an alternate layout so now I have two:
Letter V  which looks like landscape.
    800x600 which looks like portrait.
I thought that I would keep only the 800x600 portrait.
The tutorial shows how you can 'delete' the layout you do not want and then do a 'save as'.
    I did this.
But now I  No Longer Have a Master A.
    I only have a Master  B.
    QUESTIONS
How can I change this to be called Master A.  ?
With Indesign CC, and with the updated functionality of tablets, does it really matter which layout I use ??
I created an ePub in 2010 using Indesign CS5, and I did not use alternate layouts and the ebook seems to be fine on all tablets.
Can someone please clarify these things for me.
    Thanks.

    Thanks Anne-Marie.
So I think that I should just delete my 800x600 Layout ?
The 800x600 layout physically looks in my pages panel  to be vertical.
And then save it again ?
QUESTION: Which Layout should I keep ??
That will leave me with the Letter V layout which was what is listed in all of my saved versions.
This is where I suppose I became confused.
The fact that that the term LETTER V is used  when I created a document for the WEB.
'LETTER'   denotes physical pages to me.
    V is for vertical.
document > new > web      defaults to 'horizontal' orientation if I am not mistaken
Does that makes sense ?  My confusion.
    It is just feedback.
I just hope that I do not have to go back and re-edit those last 50 pages
    Thanks for the help.
    I love adobe products.
I just want to understand this and move onto the next step.
I have been dreaming of a strategy to get my TOC to work the way I want it too.
    Thanks Bob too.

  • How can I export a pdf of an InDesign alternate layout from a book?

    Hello:
I have a book that is in a 6×9″ layout and I would like to make an alternate layout for 8.5×11 (and other formats) then export both as independent books to PDFs. How can I do this or is there another better way? I thought alternate layout would be the way to go, but I don’t think I can export the alternate layouts for all my chapters/etc., from the book menu without including ALL the pages from each layout?
Thanks for any direction or advice!
    Kevin

    Hi Willi:
Thanks for your prompt response.  Do you know if there are any scripts that can do this or at least help automate some of this process?
    Thanks!
    Kevin

  • When I move pages from one document to another, it creates a new alternate layout.

    Hello,
I'm having an issue with combining some documents. Usually I use the "move pages" command and tell the pages to integrate with another document. However, because of the new alternate layout feature, both documents have the default layouts as "Letter V". So when I move pages from one document to the end of another, it creates a new alternate layout labeled "Letter V2" and "Letter V3" etc. Is there a way to make the pages just go into the main layout of Letter V without creating a new alternate layout? How do I merge alternate layouts created in the integrated document? All documents are the same page size and orientation.
    Thank you kindly,
    Sheena

    Petrill,
Thank you. I was trying to do that yesterday, but it was grayed out. It seemed to work alright today.
    Thanks,
    Sheena

  • How to know whether alternate layout is created on a document or not?

    Hi,
I'm working on a plugin for InDesign CS6 and need to find out whether a particular document has alternate layout applied on it or not. Secondly I also want to get the notification whenever alternate layout is being created on a document.
Can anyone please help me out.

I'm not into the SDK, but according to the Javascript DOM, alternate layouts are part of Sections -- the section property 'alternateLayoutLength', for example, is "[t]he number of pages in the alternate layout section".
Perhaps that gives you a clue of where to look?

  • Alternate Layouts not flowing to iPad

I created a simple folio with three articles in CS6.
For each article I created horizontal and vertical alternate layouts for Kindle Fire, Android, and iPad.
The folios download to the Fire and the Xoom and display as expected. The iPad doesn't see the folio at all. Using most recent version of the Viewer 2.5.0.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? Am I (as per usual) missing something?
    Thx
    DMc

Yes, both the V and H are those dimensions.
I just went in and made a few corrections - making certain that no content was outside the guides. And then updated the articles, but it hasn't showed up in the Viewer.
I find it noteworthy that the Document Setup shows a page size of Kindle Fire/Nook in the pull down, and then in the Edit Page Size flyout menu of the Pages panel I have selected iPad. Might I have been better off creating the thing for iPad and then making the alternate layouts from that one?
I will create a new folio now with only the iPad layout, and see if it appears in the Viewer. If so, I will add the alternate layouts.
Finally, is "Alternate Layout" a synonym for "Rendition" now in CS6?
