Some applications fail to open

Some of my apps no longer open. They used to. Over the wekend I shut down the computer. Yesterday the problems began. The following apps all exhibit the same behavior: Appleworks, Quicken 2007, EyeTV. And that behavior is...
- no matter how I try to open (click on a document, on the dock, or within the Apps folder), they begin to open, the first window or 2 appears, then they close and I get a "Application... unexpected quit... Close, Report, or Reopen?"
Other apps still work, e.g., Safari, Firefox, iTunes, iPhoto, Calculator, Chess.
The only commonality I can see (and this may have nothing to do with the trouble) is that the offending apps all try to open more than 1 window on startup. All the apps that work only open one window. Please, any ideas anyone?

Hi, rjstaron. Welcome to the Discussions.

    Ok, that's plenty of space.
Check the S.M.A.R.T. status on your HD: Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down the c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > select Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the left side (the name of the HD’s manufacturer and the model number, usually the top item in the list) > look at the bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” (good) or something more ominous like “Failing.”
If S.M.A.R.T. status is "Verified," run Repair Disk > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility (such as DriveGenius, TechToolPro, DiskWarrior) or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD which will need to be replaced (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.

Download a free app and try again, you can delete the free app afterward.

  • Web pages, bookmarks, some application also not open

my mobil model 5530expres music, my phone wep pages and bookmarks and some application also not open. So how can i open? any one pls answer me.

Snapfish has an app available in the app store. It is an iPhone app, but should work on the iPad. You might also check for apps for some of the specific sites you are having trouble accessing.
There are some apps (such as iswifter and Puffin) that convert flash content and restream to you. results will be mixed depending on the site and you should read the reveiws and descriptions carefully.

  • Several applications fail to open

During my last software update my iMac with an 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and OS 10.5.8 froze and a message popped up essentially saying that I had to restart the computer. Ever since this several applications fail on launch and will not open at all. These applications include Safari, Mail, iTunes, Software Update, and XCode, but I'm sure there are porbably more. All the applications that I have found that fail have been Apple applications. All attempts of getting Software Update and Safari to open have failed so far. I also tried reinstalling the Java update that was updating when it timed out. Below are some of the reports from the fail screen.

    Is my drive corrupted?

  • Some applications won't open after updating to OS 10.8.5

I am running the Mountain Lion on a 2009 Macbook Air. I just did an update to 10.8.5 and now some of my applications won't open. A few of the appications that no longer run are Chrome, iPhoto and all Microsoft applications.
I tried uninstalling an reinstalling the apps but that did nothing, I also tried creating a new user account to see if the problem persisted in there and it did. I then tried removing my caches folder from Library which also fixed nothing. I then tried booting it in safe mode and the applications successfully opened in there.
I obviously can't just boot my Macbook up in safe mode whenever I need to use it so if anyone knows how this problem could be solved? They were all functioning normally before I did the most recent update of OS.
I have tried repairing the disk permissions but that resulted in no change also. I do not have the start up disk for Mountain Lion so reinstalling the OS is not possible, nor is booting from disk.
I'm in my final year of college, in the middle of my final year project I REALLY need this fixed.

When I try to open iPhoto, Unity, Chrome or a few others it gives me the same error each time. "iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X"
But that doesn't make sense because I just updated the OS and all my applications are up to date also. I've tried reinstalling, no joy though.

  • Some applications are not opening

    Hi,
Many of my applications are not opening. Sometimes when I try to open the application it doesn't even bounce in the dock.  Other times, applications will bounce in the dock and then stop.  These are crucial apps, like Mail, Pages, and iPhoto.  Safari and iTunes are working fine.
Here is some information on my mac:
I have an early 2008 MacBook Pro, 2.5 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 250 GB HDD, and 4 GM DDR2 Crucial RAM. I am running the latest versions of Snow Leopard, iWork, and iLife. So my computer is up to date (software wise).
Does anyone know what could be going on with my computer?
I have already tried repairing the disk and repairing the disk permissions in disk utility through the OS as well as the install disc.  Is there anything else I should try doing before taking my computer into the Apple store?
    Thanks,
    Max

    That didn't work =/
I'm still having the same issues even with a new account.

  • IPhone applications failed to open

I own apple iPhone 3G,some of the applications are not opening. When i open it,it shuts suddenly.not allowing to use the app.My iPhone is NOT Jailbroken.all the applications are downloaded from apple store only.So can i know why is it happening like that and is there any solution to solve this problem?

It's a bug that's been around for quite some time. It's be nice if Apple got around to fixing it...
Fortunately, there is a simple workaround.
Go to the App store and download an app, any app. I'd suggest a small free one.
Once the app has been installed on your computer all the other apps will work.
You can now delete the app you just installed.
This seems to reset something in the phone. Happened to me last week while travelling on business, and had to download an app over the 3G network. At $20 a meg while roaming in Europe (I'm from Canada) it's an expensive fix. Maybe I should send my roaming bill to Apple!

  • Using Photoshop as edit application fails to open image

I have Photoshop CS selected as my edit application. PS opens to a browse screen and the selected image in iPhoto fails to appear for edit. With the new lib structure I cannot search for the individual image. I can export the mage and edit but then I am forced to import the edited file.
    Ideas? Thanks.

    John
You can set Photoshop as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
IF you edit it the way you want to, iphoto will not reflect the changes to the file as it won't know about them.
    Regards
    TD

i am using the oldest iphone3, i experienced prb with some applications, i cannot open

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Has any of this been tried?

  • Had to restore my hard drive, now some applications aren't opening

I did an update the other day and my imac desided to go crazy.
I ended up having to do a full restore from time machine.
Now I'm having problems keeping applications like, iphoto, yahoo messenger, skype, etc. to stay open.
They will open, but after a few seconds they close down and keep doing this no matter how many times I retry opening them.
Not sure what's going on now.
Any help would be much appreciated.
I've even tried fully uninstalling yahoo messenger and then reinstalling and the same thing is happening.
Also, randomly my imac is restarting for no reason.

    How to maintain a Mac
    1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; make them independent of each other. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
    2. Keep your software up to date. In the Software Update preference pane, you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis. This is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible.
    3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Use your computer; don't fuss with it.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
The free anti-malware application ClamXav is not crap, and although it’s not routinely needed, it may be useful in some environments, such as a mixed Mac-Windows enterprise network.
    4. Beware of trojans. A trojan is malicious software (“malware”) that the user is duped into installing voluntarily. Such attacks were rare on the Mac platform until sometime in 2011, but are now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be acquired directly from the developer. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from a web page without your having requested it should go straight into the Trash. A website that claims you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, is rogue.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.
    5. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem. While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage consumption and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as the free application OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move rarely-used large files to secondary storage.
    6. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

  • Firefox 32 - Download file to external application fails to open the application. Only works if app is used within Firefox as in Acrobat reader.

Some of my users have started using Firefox 32 and discovered that files on the websites (pdf, xls, doc, etc) will not open fully if the application option is set to a windows application such as Acrobat Viewer, Microsoft Excel, Word, etc. The Download manager shows them listed and "hung" up. The file is downloaded to a temp location but the file is never opened and presented to the user. If the pdf option is set to open within Firefox using the built in Acrobat viewer, that will open within the browser.
This did not happen with version 31 and installing this on a sandbox desktop reproduced the problem.
We are running Windows 7 operating systems. Need help to solve this. Anybody?

hello warnerm, this is a bug in the latest 32 beta 9 version which will be addressed in the release candidate 1 build which should be deployed via auto-updates to beta users tomorrow.
a workaround for the moment would be to enter '''about:config''' into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up), right-click somewhere on the page and create a new string setting with the name '''browser.safebrowsing.appRepURL''' and value '''https://sb-ssl.google<i></i>.com/safebrowsing/clientreport/download?key=%GOOGLE_API_KEY%'''
for reference see [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1057764 bug #1057764] (please don't post in bug reports, but vote for the bug if you want to see it fixed)

  • Some Applications Won't Open

Hi. So, just randomly one day some of the application on my Mac stopped opening and it's been a few days and they still won't. I tried shutting the computer down and restarting it, deleting a lot of stuff, and even using different accounts but nothing seems to be changing anything. Most of the applications are fine but Pages, Numbers, iPhoto, and maybe some other ones I haven't tried yet just aren't opening. When you click on them it says they're open but there's nothing on the screen. You can quit out of the application but really... there's nothing to quit out of. And if you leave it "open" for long enough then when you click on it it tells you to force quit. I'd really appreciate some help on how to fix this because nothing seems to be working. Thanks!

You could check in the various logs in Console (in Utilities) for any messages that appear to be related. Might also not hurt (but maybe not help) to run Permissions repair in Disk Utility.

  • Disk Utility: Application Fails To Open / Must Force Quit

    Hi-
My Disk Utility application opens but hangs on the "Gathering Disk Information" screen and I get the spinning wheel of doom. I let it spin for minutes/hours and it doesn't seem to matter. I have to Force Quit to get out of it.
I searced for a preference file to try trashing it and creating a new one but no luck in my search by name.
Any help would be great. Thanks!

It sounds like it's hanging on the disk check.
Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
    Restore from TM backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X
    Get help online
    Disk Utility
Run Disk Utility > Repair Disk, if you get errors run until no errors reported or reports "the disk cannot be fixed".
