Some avi-files not playing on QuickTime Pro 7.0.4

I tried to play a few avi-file movies using QuickTime Pro 7.0.4 on my Mac OS X 10.4.4, but unfortunately, I keep getting the message: "Some necessary QuickTime software is missing. It may be available on the QuickTime Web site." After going on that site, I downloaded some of the available free software, but the problem remains. Playing the movies with a third-application like the VLC, works fine. I wish QuickTime Pro would have the same capabilities in playing avi files like other Players. Do you have an idea how I can solve the problem?
Thanks for your support!

Thanks for all your help guys. I guess I will remain with the VLC for playing AVI files that donnot play on the QT Player as the VLC plays almost any movie file. I came across an interesting article regarding the subject:
QuickTime: About Playing .AVI Files
Learn why an .AVI file may not play as expected in QuickTime Player.
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave. The .AVI format is what is known as a container format. It specifies a way in which a file may contain audio and video data. It does not specify how that data is encoded. The encoding of audio and video data is specified in what are known as codecs. A codec (short for COmpressor/DECompressor) tells the computer how to decode the audio and video tracks that have been encoded within the .AVI file. QuickTime Player can use numerous codecs by default. You can also add additional codecs to extend QuickTime's features using plug-ins or third-party installations.
When QuickTime opens an .AVI file, it checks to see which codecs were used to encode the audio and video tracks within it. For example, an .AVI file may contain a video track encoded in the Cinepak codec and an audio track encoded with the ALaw 2:1 codec. If both the audio and the video were compressed using a codec that QuickTime can use, the file will play normally. If the audio or video or both were created using codecs that QuickTime cannot use, you may see a message like the following:
"QuickTime is missing the software needed to perform this operation. Unfortunately, it is not available on the QuickTime server"
or
"You may experience problems playing a video track in "filename.avi" because the required compressor could not be found."
These messages are not an indication that anything is wrong with QuickTime Player.
Lists of audio and video codecs included with and supported by QuickTime are available from the QuickTime specifications page.
Using QuickTime Player, you may be able to determine which codec was used to compress an audio or video track:
QuickTime 6 and earlier
Open the file in QuickTime Player.
From the Movie menu, choose Get Movie Properties.
From the left pop-up menu in the Properties window, choose Sound Track or Video Track.
From the right pop-up menu, choose Format. The Format section shows the codec.
QuickTime 7
Open the file in QuickTime Player.
From the Window menu, choose Show Movie Info. The codec is listed next to Format.
If the .AVI file is encoded using a codec that is not included with QuickTime, you might be able to find and add that codec so QuickTime can play media encoded with it. Contact the party that publishes or distributes the codec to see if a QuickTime version is available. Many third-party QuickTime components are available on the QuickTime components page.

  • .m2v file not playing in Quicktime Pro

I just purchased Quicktime Pro 7.6. I have a bunch of MPEG2 (.m2v) files that worked on my old iMac and am trying to get them to work on my new iMac. When I open the MPEG2 files using Quicktime, I get a "the file is not a movie file" error. Again, these are the same MPEG2 files that worked on my previous iMac. When I open the files using VLC, the video works fine, but it VLC doesn't play MPEG2s with audio, nor can it convert. Any idea why Quicktime Pro would not be working? I've tried the files with and without the .m2v extensions also.

There should be a second, audio file that is associated with the m2v. The m2v container does not have the audio. VLC probably can't find the audio track.
So in other words, you guys are saying that Quicktime Pro does not come with the MPEG-2 player component, and that will be another $20?
Unfortunately, that is correct. Another option is [ffmpegx|http://ffmpegx.com>. It is shareware and costs $15.

  • Some AVI files not working?

OK, let me try and sum this up.
using a cannon power shot i have filmed time lapse footage before and brought it into an older version of imove and gotten it to open on my old (white edged) imac. I now have imove11 and a new imac. these same timelapse AVI files will not play on quicktime now or register to be found for imovie even with an import. Regula speed AVI files will still download from the camera and work on quicktime and imove11.
now here is what is throwing me off.
Iphoto11 will import these same files and they will play problem free in there.
when i download them and open them through image capture they download no problem.
wheni double click to open in quicktime i get the can't be opened, may need additional software error.
i have made compilations in the past of these type AVI time lapse files so why can't i now?
    help please!

    Thank you very much.
But AVI and .mov will take much size than .dat files.
so its better to concentrate in .dat files also for JMF I think.
    Is it true.
I have a file of avi takes - 100mb for 3 min play of video
if u convert to .mov takes - 60-70mb for the same time of video.
I think you you have .dat files , for a movie of 2hours it takes only 1gb of size and can be shipped in two 500mb cds.
Please if you have any solution to reduce the avi file sizes please let me know.
    Thank you,

I have .MOV files that were taken on my iPhone, imported into iTunes and then put in a folder outside of iTunes. Now they will not play in Quicktime. iTunes will not import them. Help!!!

  • Blackmagic AVI File Not Working in Premiere Pro CS5.5

I've got a file captured from a BlackMagic Intensity Card that I want to import into a Premiere CS5.5 project, yet Premiere just shows it as a blank green video. The file plays back in VLC, QuickTime, etc. but not in Premiere! Anyone know why? Details of the file are below.

I use the card purely for external monitor previewing,  so I continue to use the native codecs.  However, you need to use a BM timeline preset to drive the output to the external monitor via the BM IP card.
Once editing is complete, it is a doddle to cut and paste all clips used in the sequence into a timeline using an Adobe preset, thereby losing the external monitoring.
A word of caution:  I am unable to upgrade to CS5.5.1 on my Win 7 64 system, and have it on reasonable authority that it is because I have the BM IP installed.  The upgrade is fine on my non-BM IP laptop!

  • FIX for 10.4 Safari 2.0, WMP .wmv .avi files not playing

Microsoft is serving up at least two different versions of WMP as both being current. The link from the page titled
b Microsoft Windows Media Player Download
(in the windows area, but a d/l for the Mac) is the older BAD plugin for Mac (Not working with 10.4). I actually got this page as a top search result.
The pages here #1 and here #2 are current and working WMP plugins.
    If I can get
    b one
person to confirm it as an independent source, for each link, as the solution to this problem we can put this one to bed, and hopefully make it sticky.
If anyone is so inclined and know the link, copy this and submit it to MS. I'm too busy to scour their poorly organized site to find the web master bug link.

    John, thank you!
I've been unable to play CNN and other movies online since late in the Panther upgrades and into Tiger. I tried many different tricks. And for the record, I had to download both of those links in order to get it to work! Downloading the first didn't work, but by downloading both, and (I guess) adding some additional file to mix made it finally work. First time I've been able to view a CNN movie in about a year.
I wish I could tell you exactly what occurred to get it to finally work, but I do believe your theory is correct: there are different versions of Media Player, and you need a combo of ... something... to get it to work properly.
    Thanks again.

  • Why do some AVI files not import into iMovie?

Some of my AVI video does not import into iMovie. When I try, it gives me a non-specific error message. Is there a way I can import it? Other AVI files import with no problem.

AVI is a container, not a format; the audio and video in an AVI may use any codec, and some codecs can't be used in Mac OS X. Installing Perian may help.

  • Why do certain .mpg files not play in Quicktime?

....and will these files play on a IPod Video? The files that this has happened to have had .mpg file extensions and the message I get is that it is not a file Quicktime can understand.

They may be mpeg-2, which sometimes has the .mpg extension. Try this freeware viewer: VLC
I am pretty sure mpeg-2 will not play on the iPod and for that matter I don't believe mpeg-1 will play on it either.
You can try converting mpegs to iPod with this freeware, although it does require the Apple mpeg2 component if the mpeg is mpeg2. Mpeg StreamClip

  • AVI clip not playing in Quicktime 7.2 on intel based imac

I downloaded my digital pics and AVI clips from card reader into iphoto. The clips play white with only sound. When I first clicked on AVI clip I got message saying I needed to get a plug in and gave me link to Apple - quicktime components, then this message below.
"Note: If you are using a Macintosh with an Intel processor be sure to visit the component developer's web site to download a Universal Binary Component that is compatible with your Intel-based Macintosh. PowerPC-based components will not work in QuickTime on Macintosh with Intel processors." Then there was a bunch of links to various 3rd party plug ins.
I went to Intels page and searched "Universal Binary component", and it's all french to me. I'm sure there is an easier way to get my clips showing A and V. I also tried importing clips to imovie, but that didn't change anything. Thanks!

Well, I'm trying click the "Solved" button to let you know that the perian plugin worked (yay), but I'm getting an error message, so maybe on your end, you can say it is solved.
Thanks, I'm so grateful for you smart IT guys!

  • .AVI files not playing correctly on G3 iBook

With the help of JulieJulieJulie and others I am able to import my mpeg 4 video clips (they are in .avi format on my Casio Exilim EX S600 digital camera) into iPhoto and play them without any difficulty on my G5 iMac and my G4 Powerbook. This morning I imported a group of these files onto my daughter's G3 iBook running Tiger 10.4.5 and iPhoto 5. I tried using both the EX_M4S2 component as well as the Casio .avi importer to view them with the same bad result. The clip starts and then becomes badly distorted, kind of like an impressionist painting through bad glasses--all blurry and wiggly. I then tried viewing them with mpeg streamclip and they also didn't play properly--they just kept stopping. Any idea why the G3 iBook would not be able to play them properly? I have Quicktime 7.0.4 Pro running on all three Macs.
    ds

Something you might try as an experiment (if you have a FireWire cable and your iBook G3 has a FireWire port) would be to start-up your G5 in target disk mode and then boot the iBook with the option key down, select the G5's hard drive to boot from and see if playback is noticably better - the system would be running from the hard drive in the G5 which is a 3.5" (vs. the 2.5" drive in the iBook) and runs considerably faster. If playback improves then drive speed would appear to be a factor. Or the OS and QuickTime version installed on the G5 vs. that installed on the iBook since the iBook would be using the software from the G5 hard drive.)

  • Some .mp3 files not playing in itunes?

I can't seem to play some of the .mp3 files in itunes 10 that I was able to play before the upgrade. For example in the rip I have of The Beatles - Abbey Road 2009 Stereo Remaster, only 3 of the 17 tracks can be imported into the itunes library. When I try to import the missing .mp3 files it won't even add them under the abbey road album. And it won't play either. The missing files play fine in windows media player, quicktime, vlc media player and others. What's going on with this new itunes update? Thanks to anyone that can help out.

    Hello,
I have the same problem here in Belgium/Europe after upgrading to iTunes 10.
About 10gb of 310Gb in total is not readable anymore. I use only mp3 320kbps.
You can still find them back in iTunes, but no playback anymore.
I have deleted them from the list and do a "add to library". Impossible to import this data anymore.
What is strange is that this mp3 data can be used in QuickTime Player.
And..the same data is not readable on a another (Windows 7) pc with iTunes 10, neither on a pc with Vista and iTunes 9.2.
    Who can help ??

  • MP4 files not playing in Quicktime 7.3

Lately, I have been getting the following error when I try to play MP4 files in quicktime on my Mac:
"The movie could not be opened. Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error -50.)"
This error also prevents me from adding the files to iTunes. The weird thing is that they play fine on a PC.
I have tried updating my Quicktime (I am running Leopard), and that did nothing.
    Any ideas?

How can I tell that. I have several. I am also unable to view them in the finder window like I can other .m4v or .mov files.
