Some bugs that are crippling my workflow

I've tried to search forums and didn't find anything or too little about these bugs, so I'm starting a new thread. Still I'm curious nobody encountered these or hasn't bothered to tell.
First, export from FCP to TGA sequences (using QT conversion) got broken in February or maybe March - yes, I'm installing Apple updates as they come, my fault
Since then FCP exports image sequences using aspect ratio but the resampling is nearest neighbor, therefore unusable in serious production. Before that, you got nice 720x576 images from a PAL sequence, now you get ugly pixelated 768x576 ones. If I missed some preference where to set this could you pls tell me? Or could you please do anything with this? Only workaround is to export MOVs and then use QT player which exports correct images (real pain if you have multiple exports). We work with image sequences a lot, so this would definitely help.
Second is rendering of image overlays and motion effects in timeline. We completely stopped using FCP for gfx overlays, because the render output is totally unpredictable. Sometimes it works ok, but quite often we get one of there bugs:
2a) Blue dots on the alpha edges of titles (imported TGA images, not titles from FCP generators)
titles are mostly orange since orange(mobile operator) is our major client, maybe with other titles you get other dots this happens very erraticaly and depends from case to case, sometimes everything works and sometimes you get one or two shining blue dots
2b) bright 1px frame around edges of images resized/cropped using motion effects. This happens on captured video or imported stills without alpha.
This is mostly visible if you use a white background. Problem shows itself always when I crop/resize/move a clip. Sometimes it helps to use a luma key on the image and the border disappears.
Funny thing both these problems have in common is that they don't show until you render. RT preview looks ok, but after render or export the dreaded dots and/or white lines appear.
Doesn't matter if I use ProRes codec or uncompressed 8bit or 10bit codecs, if I set rendering to RGB, YUV 8bit or 10bit, motion filtering quality to anything. To me this seems as if it was an encoding problem.
Also I'd like to join ranks of people who have been hit with the good ol' bug of bad EDLs created from timelines with speed changes. After a week of little sleep, our timing was absolutely packed as always and after we put the EDL from FCP to smoke, all clips with speed changes had wrong TC. So we spent whole day writing down timecodes by hand and manually re-editing them in smoke, a day we missed dearly during the next long nights :((
so, I just call for help to all you hard-working people at apple, if you could contact me I can explain more or send you examples of where things have gone wrong.

Since we have a smoke(linux), many desktop compositing and 3d Wintel boxes and two PowerMacs with FCP our typical workflows are:
a) ingest and edit on macs -> online on smoke/combustion/shake/whatever ->put it all back to macs, make broadcast master tapes from macs.
b) Create animations and gfx on PCs(3d/AE/comb/...) -> edit them together on macs, make broadcast master tapes from macs.
so we almost always need to trensfer footage between systems. For smoke we usually use SDI for sending PAL material, but when working with HD or other exotic formats, there is nothing better than good old tga sequences. We also must render to image sequences from 3d rendering farms for obvious reasons. Even when not farming, tgas give us the best speed when reading/rendering on the wintel boxes and the best compatibility around all software/hardware. Also, we have already experienced the joy of an hour-long render crashing after 58 minutes, leaving a corrupted mov. There's nothing like it. Even the mov is ok, you still have problems with codec compatibility/color shifts, etc.
Sometimes you just need a quick still export form the edit suite. Was easy a few months before, but now you must do stupid workarounds if you don't want ugly corrupted pixelated crap.
That much for the need of exporting tgas.
p.s.: it would make our life a bit easier if we could make FCP import TGA sequence straight on as any other editing application.(WINK apple developers ) Not that converting them in QT player would be so hard but anything that eases the strain on your mind in front of an important client is good.

    Resetting the settings will reset things like the wallpaper to the default. It wont remove the apps or music.
    As the previous poster said, the apps and music will be tied to the previous owners Apple ID, you'll need the password to update the apps and remain authorized to play the music.
    I would suggest taking your stuff off (the camera pictures) then erasing all content and settings so the iPad is like new. For privacy reasons alone I would erase the device. I realise you want to keep the music, but since you haven't paid for it (it was purchased under someone elses ID) then it isn't yours to keep, you'll need to write down the tracks and purchase them under your ID.

    It is a Total Misconception that the Support files are installed when you are installing Windows, even if the USB drive that holds them is inserted in the system when doing the Windows install.
    You must always Run the Setup.exe files from the support files or run the drivers individually once Windows has finished installing and booted to the desktop.
    Also you really need to run the Boot Camp Control Panel Applet and check for updates as not all the newest drivers for full function of all the hardware is included with the original support download. That download is basically a generic version to get the system working and without doing the updates not everything will work properly.

    It also takes time for the photos to be transferred out of your iPhone and into Photo stream on Apple's iCloud servers.
    Note that this can't happen if your iPhone is not connected to a WiFi network:
    When you enable My Photo Stream on your devices, all new photos you take or import to those devices will be automatically added to your photo stream.
    iOS devices: New photos you take are automatically uploaded to your photo stream when you leave the Camera app and are connected to Wi-Fi. My Photo Stream does not push photos over cellular connections.
    Macs: Any new photos you import to iPhoto or Aperture begin uploading automatically when you have a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. Or you can change your iPhoto or Aperture preferences so that only photos you manually add to My Photo Stream are uploaded.
    PC with iCloud Control Panel 2.0 or later: Open a Windows Explorer window and under Favorites select iCloud Photos if you are using iCloud Control Panel 3.0 (or Photo Stream if you are using 2.0 to 2.1.2). Open My Photo Stream. Click the "Add photos" button. Select the photos to import to My Photo Stream, then click Open.

    If you have an iCloud backup, restore it to your phone as explained here: https://support.apple.com/kb/ph12521.  If you have a backup on your computer instead, restore it to your phone by connecting your phone to your computer, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Restore from Backup.

    I got the same problem. The percentage of getting this problem is around 10% of all my dial/receive calls.
    The problem usually appears when I receive calls. The phone app will freeze, and I cannot dial or receive calls even I closed the phone app, however, most other apps work properly.
    Once this problem happens, I will not be able to turn off the phone by holding sleep button, the only way I can get rid of it is holding sleep and home button at the same time to reset the iphone.

    I don't know if this will help someone but I am posting this for that purpose.  In the past when I first had this problem, I'd read a post somewhere (sorry, long ago, don't have the link) where an individual was having the same problem and they stated that when the MBP got heated, that's when the keys would stop working, and they went into the MBP and jiggle some stuff around (a specific wire, I'm not electronically inclined so I know NOT of what they spake!).  Well I didn't want to do that but it always stuck in the back of my mind.  I had given up, really, and was planning to take my MBP to the apple store.  But by chance one night I left my MBP on the floor where it's cool, and when I turned it on, the problem went - poof! It seems there was some validity to the post that spoke about heat, because my problems started when I would stream foreign dramas on my MBP for hours at night, and I would hear the fan going off all the time, and in the mornings, my "p", "enter", "0", ";", and all the function keys would stop working. 
    So, maybe try keeping the MBP in a cool place when it's off.  Since I've started doing this overnight every night (keeping it on the cool floor, out of reach of any big feet), I have not had a single problem with my keyboard.
    Hopefully this might help someone.

    I can access almost all web sites on my desktop, laptop, and smartphone, but there are a few that will load on the desktop and smartphone, but will not load on my laptop, with either Firefox or IE. There is no error message, and the animated icon that should show that the site is loading doesn't move at all. This is very frustrating, because it sometimes means that I miss important webinars, etc. Some of the sites I can't load are not long links, just the basic URL.
    My internet service has been unable to help, and Norton tech support tried but also was unable to resolve the problem.
    I've tried resetting Firefox to the default, but it didn't help. Note again that the web sites that are a problem will not load in either Firefox or IE on the laptop, but do load properly on the desktop and smartphone.

  • How to allow some apps that are restricted by age?

    I have the restrictions for apps on my 10 year old's ipad mini set to 9+.  There are a few puzzle-based apps that are rated 12+ that I'd like him to be able to have.  Is there a way to enable only specific apps that I specify, or, is my only option to change the restrictions to enable all apps rated 12+?  I notice with Safari, you can disable it, but then can allow specific sites that I name.  I can't seem to find that option with apps.  I'm assuming it's not possible, but thought I'd ask in case I'm missing something....Thanks!

    With apps it's all or nothing, so you can either allow all 12+ apps or none of them, you can't just allow some of them.

    Thanks for the question. It sounds like you might have some apps that seem to be stuck on "Waiting." The following is a past discussion that dealt with a similar issue and may help you as well:

    Try tapping the App, so that it changes to Paused instead of Waiting, then tap it again to resume the install.
    Make sure you don't have any paused downloads in other apps either, like the App Store or iTunes Store.
    If that doesn't do it, try resetting or restoring the iPhone.

  • ITunes can't locate some files that are right where they should be

    I'm using iTunes 12 for Windows.  I keep a huge iTunes library at home on a mapped NAS share and the same library at work on a local drive.  Every week on Monday I sync my entire iTunes folder from home to an external drive and then bring that external drive to work and sync it to my local drive there.  (Note: This is a one way sync; I never sync in the other direction.)  This system has worked flawlessly for six years.
    Within the last six weeks, I've started to get error messages on my work system saying that many (>1600) media files of various types cannot be located.  I assumed corruption was the issue so I deleted my entire 500GB iTunes folder and re-copied everything back over.  Not just the media files.  Everything.  The problem persists and I cannot figure out why.
    I have confirmed that iTunes on the work computer is referencing the correct iTunes library file.  I have confirmed that iTunes is pointing to the correct iTunes folder.  I have confirmed that the "missing" iTunes files are right where they should be.  (I have always had iTunes set to move imported media into the iTunes folder so there is no stray media floating around on either system.  And I have iTunes set to organize the media.)
    It is worth noting that I started seeing this around the time when I upgraded to iTunes 12.  When I upgraded to iTunes 12 I had to change the path to my home library from "\\<NAS>\iTunes\iTunes Music" to "M:\iTunes\iTunes Music" due to a bug in iTunes that created iPhone syncing issues if the iTunes library is on a network drive.  But I can't figure out why this would matter.  The path on the work computer is correct and all media files are there.
    Ideas? I just don't understand how deleting everything and starting over doesn't solve the issue since there is NO issue at home.

    I totally botched the repair process, including my library and media collection, four different times.  If not for the fact that I had a complete, up-to-date copy of my library and all media files I would be completely scr3wed right now.  I'm going to outline the mistakes I made for the benefit of those who might reference this thread in the future.
    A big part of my struggle was the underlying assumptions I was making about how the iTunes database is maintained and tracked.  It is not the same as the digital asset managers I use for work—Lightroom, for example.  I really had to quit thinking for myself and pay attention to what tt2 wrote about the way the iTunes db works in the link he provides earlier in this thread about making split libraries portable.
    The biggest mistake I made is failing to understand that after you move the iTunes library files (but not the media files) to a new iTunes drive or directory outside of the existing iTunes folder and then shift-click to open that relocated library in iTunes you have to set the iTunes Media folder location (in preferences>advanced) to the empty iTunes Media folder in the NEW iTunes folder.  You do NOT set it (or leave it) pointed to the old iTunes Music/Media folder where your files [may] actually reside before consolidation.  This mistake can make a bad situation much worse. 
    Finally, I did not have a split library in the sense that my media files were outside of my iTunes Media folder.  Because of this, when I incorrectly pointed the new iTunes library to the old iTunes Media folder and then consolidated I created 9,936 duplicate files.  I had a complete back up which made eliminating the duplicate files a simple process.  Without the backup I would have been in trouble.
    So...to fix my problem I followed tt2's instructions and did this:
    Backed up my entire M:\iTunes folder including libraries and media files.  If everything goes well, this backup will not be touched.
    Created a new A:\iTunes folder plus an empty A:\iTunes\iTunes Media folder.
    Moved everything from M:\iTunes to A:\iTunes EXCEPT for the iTunes Music* folder.  (*It was the new iTunes 9 and later hierarchy but with the old name.)
    Shift-Clicked to open iTunes and selected the iTunes library inside A:\iTunes.
    Once iTunes was open I went to Edit>Preferences>Advanced and made the empty A:\iTunes\iTunes Media the location of my media.
    Went to File>Library>Organize Library and choose "consolidate". After hours of file copying, my issue was resolved. A:\iTunes is portable.
    Confirmed that the new A:\iTunes library correctly links to all media in the A:\iTunes\iTunes Media folder and then deleted the M:\iTunes directory with the old M:\iTunes\iTunes Music folder inside.
    NOTE: It bears repeating that the problem solved was that I could not move my old M:\iTunes folder to a different workstation w/o breaking some of the links.  However all the links worked fine in the M:\iTunes location.  If this were not the case then this solution will not resolve anything.
