Some characters being replaced by other scripts

I’m having a problem with Safari 2.0.4 on an Intel MacBook Pro. When it encounters some accented characters on some Web sites, it substitutes Hebrew letters and looks really strange. This does not occur on my PPC Mac Mini. How does one fix this problem? Thanks very much! Peace.

And I didn’t replace any of the fonts that came with the computer. What now?
It is sometimes easy to wind up with added fonts without realizing it. Two things we can try:
a) Clean your font caches using FontFinagler, which you can get here:

b) If problem is still there, check your fonts against this list and let me know if you have any others:

Also let me know if you are using any font manager other than OS X's FontBook.
Another thing you could try: If you type é into TextEdit and go through every font in the Font Panel (Format > Font > Show Fonts), when you switch to one of them the é should turn to Hebrew, and that would be the culprit.

Some characters are replaced by question marks!

All of a sudden my iMac (OS X 10.5.1 Leopard) is displaying question marks for some special characters.
For example, on internet, look up a word "pediment" in Yahoo! Dictionary ( http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/pediment)... Instead of showing the "dot" symbol to identify a syllabus break, it shows question marks as ped?i?ment, and instead of showing c with a little squiggle underneath for a word facade (within the definition of pediment), it shows fa?ade.
I did not have this problem on my iMac on Tuesday (01/29/08) morning and I have not installed anything other than the Apple updates.
I tried with FireFox and Safari, and both show the same thing. Then I went and checked my husband's iMac (OS X 10.5.1 Leopard) and it has a same problem, so I know it is not just my iMac.
Then (yes, there is more...) I started to work on my Word document and tried to insert "symbol" from insert on the Toolbar... many of my symbol fonts (Symbol, Osaka, etc) has question marks replacing special characters.
Please help! I am unable to complete my work without these special characters!!

Well, I went to the Yahoo! Dictionary "Pediment" and it said it was set to Default which is set to Western (ISO Latin 1), so I assumed it was Western (ISO Latin 1). But when I click on Western (ISO Latin 1), the pages appear what it's supposed to look like with special characters... What does this mean?
I reset all the settings; I chose something else as default, quit Safari, opened it and chose Western (ISO Latin 1) as a default to see if it changes anything... No change. It says my default is Western (ISO Latin 1), but it seems not.
I am officially confused and have no clue what to do...??????!!!!!
On the bright side, at least I can get my work done, even if I have to change the encoding one page at a time... Thanks.

Greek Text Not Displaying Properly (Characters being replaced with different ones)

I am using Adobe Photoshop CS3. I have a spreadsheet of Greek translations. When I copy and paste the text into Photoshop, certain characters are missed out or replaced with an incorrect one. I have tried downloading fonts that support the Greek character set, but still no luck. If I paste this text into any other applications (Word, explorer etc) the text displays properly. I was wandering if there is a setting or anything in photoshop that I need to change? It seems to be an issue with this application only.

Have you tried to set your system language to a European setting, e.g. Ireland or UK? Seems like an issue with incorrect Unicode conversion. Also turn off OpenType features for automated glyph replacement in the menu of the Character palette...

My late 2009 iMac 27 inch hard drive just failed and is being replaced. It did not qualify for call back but I am wondering if there is others with similar issue

As I stated my late 2009 iMac 27 inch hard drive failed and is being replaced.. I am being charged as machine does not qualify for the call back program..call backs are on 2011 machines.. However i am in shock that my segate internal iMac hard drive failed in less than two years.. are there others with similar issue? Also when I get machine back will new hard drive be stable .. How do I make sure my working environment is reliable.. I have all my data and work backed up and will be able to rebuild my system but I really do not want to have to go through this down the line again.

Just to update everyone and maybe help people down the road .... It has been a week of **** .... I may have finally solved a problem that I have seen a ton of people in all different types of discussions around the world having trouble with ...... I am going to upload some pictures of what I was getting in the beginning and it came out of no where .... I had the random pixel problem with my display and to make a long story short I came across an article two days ago regarding internal temperatures and fan speed ...... I kept reading about apples approach which is not the point ..... More importantly I dug deeper into temperature control and fan settings .... I discovered all kinds of software and there is only one in my eyes that can help anyone dealing with this display problem .... I will be honest, I do not have the money right now for anything extra and am barely getting by and that is why I kept at it ... I figured keep trying different things because a repair is out of the question ... http://www.crystalidea.com/macs-fan-control - This program has solved my problem - I get to adjust three internal temperatures inside my Imac and slowly but surely as the temperatures remained constant the display is fine .... Like new again .... I cant believe it ..... Turns out the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB graphics card gets very hot causing it to not do what it is supposed to ..... Anyone that has any questions do not hesitate to contact me ...... I am going to upload some pics .... However we are receiving an error when attempting to enter data in the field which we have this edit. Error property: line through cannot be set because doing so would violate the document permission setting. any idea how we can get around this issue?

You can control which fields are locked down after signing by setting up a collection. Then those that are not locked can be changed after signing. If this is not possible, then the line outs must occur prior to signing.

I understand that you are experiencing an issue with the responsiveness of your iPad mini while charging. I would need a little more information on how you are charging the device to provide a better answer. While the steps below are not exactly labeled for this issue, they may help resolve the issue.
If the battery doesn’t charge
If the battery doesn’t charge, unplug your device and try these steps:
Look at the connector at the bottom of your device and make sure it’s free of debris.
If you're using a USB power adapter, make sure it's plugged in all the way and the power outlet is working. If you're connecting to a computer, make sure it's on and can charge your device. To charge an iPad, you might need to use a USB power adapter and plug into a power outlet.
Try a different USB cable, USB power adapter, or USB port.
If everything seems to be working, reconnect your device and wait for 30 minutes.
If your device still doesn’t charge, try to restart it while it's connected to power. If you can't restart, reset your device.

The font 'Didot' contains an invalid encoding. Some characters may not display.

I am receiving this message:
"The font 'Didot' contains an invalid encoding. Some characters may not display."
The message appears only in one form, not others. It appears only once, the first time I click on the form after opening it, then not again until I reopen the form.
The font is not embedded in the form and does not exist on my computer. The font is not employed in any field in the form or in its static elements.
Would appreciate any help in getting rid of this very annoying message.

HelveticaNeue was in a PDF layout (from Illustrator) for the background but this variable was removed when I converted all fonts to curves (outlines) and replaced it in to my form. Run FontBook and verify the Font. If defective open your System Install CD open Fonts. Drag this font to Desktop.
If you can Remove the defective font by draging to Trash (if system font you'll have to give username and Password) .
Then drag the copy on Finder in same folder dective was removed from
THen Restart Computer with shift key down. Hold down until a screen comes up where you must sign in. wait until screen fully loads. Now try the PDF. If works shut down Acrobat (or Reader) and the restart computer normally.

Snow Leopard HD being replaced; my files are on external HD; can I run them off of MBA Lion?

My Mac issues .... bad seagate hard drive .... , finally being replaced as of today by Apple store per the warranty. The MBA? All sorts of issues(el cheapo version--only $999 <insert evil smirk>; 2011 11-inch, measley 64G flash drive; memory keeps being eaten alive by some kind of "other" mystery files). Whatever. It's not like I'm not used to all the problems with this machine anyway ... so I'll hang on to it and try to work with it till Thursday.
I've got both of my Macs backed up on a 1T Seagate external HD. With the 27-inch Mac in the Genius Hospital getting a new hard drive, I'd like to try to do one or both of the following:
1. Work off of the iMac Snow Leopard stuff saved on the external hard drive (backed up ON the seagate external as well as on Time Machine--yes, it's journaled, whatever that means). Is that possible? There were very confusing issues with permissions that I was not able to resolve on my own before I took the Macs to the Apple store, so .... that brings me to Number 2.
2. Since the idiot MBA has to have its hard drive wiped out for a fresh install on Thursday, can I wipe it out myself, OR just access the Snow Leopard files somehow off of the Seagate external drive? But they are only backed up via Time Machine, so it's what? Impossible to work with just one file, plus I've got those issues with disk permissions.
I guess what I'm wondering is, can I use this MBA sort of as a temporary machine to run the Snow Leopard? I don't need everything off of the iMac, because I'm only talking about using it like this for today and tomorrow. I'm more than happy to wipe out the entire contents of this MBA (it's backed up on the seagate external also) and just use it as Snow Leopard until I can get the iMac back and reinstall it all on there. Is that possible?
I've googled until I'm blue in the face and my eyes have glazed over. I cannot figure it out. Obviously, this being the 11-inch MBA, there is no CD drive, so no way to boot off a Snow Leopard disk.
Anyone? Buehler? Anyone? Can I work with my own files on that external drive, even if it means I wipe out the MBA?

I have a sapscript output which i am sending as a PDF Attachment.
Though the required characters in Script are BOLD but they are not appearing as BOLD in PDF Attachment.
Please guide me on how to make the characters in the PDF Attachment as BOLD.
I have searched in the forum but could not find any matching solution.

ZEN not displaying some characters in me

Hi.
Got my 8gig Zen today and all was well until it hung at the end of the first album I played.
I've read that there was hanging problems with the firmware (.03 ) so I downloaded the latest one from Creative (v..04_0.6.) and flashed the player.
Every thing was well until I noticed that some characters weren't being displayed in the menus.
Most often it's the "i" and "o" that goes missing but other letters have been know to go walkies too.
The problem seems to occur after the player has been turned off for awhile and I can correct it by doing a reset but that's hardly desirable as I lose my setu

Can anyone help with this

Some characters show as grey box (missing from font?)

Browsing, e.g. <http://www.haskell.org/onlinereport/haskell2010/haskellch4.html#x10-820061>, some of the characters are replaced by a grey placeholder box. Comparing with the desktop, one seems to be U+22C6, so I'm thinking that it can't find a font to display that with. But it seems to affect some ordinary ASCII-range characters too, in Fig 4.1 and following text at the URL above, so maybe there's more going on?
More generally, from other questions here I gather that Firefox is using its own fonts rather than relying on what's on the device already. So, can I shore that up with some good fallback fonts like symbola?

Firefox will use Charis or Clear Sans by default. Though if the glyph is not found in those fonts it will check the other system fonts such as Roboto or Droid Sans.
The glyph coverage should be the same as Chrome or the 'browser/internet' application. If it is not then we would need a copy of the fonts installed on the phone as we have run into phones that ship corrupt fonts. Doing this requires the Android SDK and executing the following command
adb pull /system/fonts/
Then zip the fonts and share them with us.

Has anyone ever exported a Keynote to a PDF and noticed that some characters were missing?

I've recently exported a Keynote to a PDF to make it readable for Windows. The problem was that I noticed some characters were missing (the word AÇÕES was written AÇ ES). My main problem, actually, was with the "ã" and "õ", mainly while using the fonte ANTENNA (the whole family).
I've then noticed that, in one single slide, I've used, by mistake, the font GILL SANS on a title. I then substituted the font for ANTENNA. Guess what... Problem solved!
Has it ever happened to anyone? Is there any logical explanation for that?!

To reproduce the problem:
Make a blank presentation.
Make a table (love the new table inteface btw ).
In a table cell, write E = mc2, where 2 is a super script.
Export to PDF. The superscript is gone. Same for subscripts.
Seems as all text after the subscript or superscirpt in a cell is missing.
Twice now, I have had to convert my presentation to PowerPoint as table headers have been mangled due to this isuee...

DreamWeaver MX bizarre characters being published to server.

New to this forum, not new to DreamWeaver MX anyway. I am having some problems and I hope someone here might have some good insight. I work for an online company at http://budgetwater.com and we have a massive website well over 1,000 pages and we are still doing things the old fashion way, hopefully not for long and we will be getting a CMS. At any rate the issue we are having is these really bizarre characters keep replacing things like registration marks and quotations on their own.

Looking for "Replace with Symbol" script

So I am trying to replace gps points with a symbol I have created. I have found blogs referencing a script that can replace selected items with symbols saved in the symbols panel, but I can't seem to find the actual script! If anyone knows where I can find JET_ReplaceWithSymbol.jsx or any other script that can do the same function, it would be greatly appreciated!

First of all I apologize, as I only started this Illustrator scripting a few weeks ago so sorry for my ignorance to things thus far. Its actually been going pretty well, but many things seem to elude me while others seem to be beyond me at this point.
Thanks so much for the additional info CarlosCanto, tags.length worked to get around that issue. I also was able to zero out the rotation (which took some research and further headache) before gathering the width/height (* however see below). It now seems to scale accurately, but given the ratios of the original and new items it seems to locate top left and fit from there proportionally (* see below) perhaps due to the scale ratio part of the code?. So thanks so much for the heads up on both the tags.length and zeroing out rotation before hand, both helped. So I am inching along to further confusion and headaches. ;-) Is there a resource where can I find more detailed information about these "tag" assignments/values, I find little nuggets on the forum and some info in the Scripting Reference but was hoping to see maybe more detailed information if it exists.
* Does the rotation tag get assigned to anything that has been rotated via the IDE as well also already rotated via obj.rotate(num) through code? To me it seems that items rotated with rotate() previously via javascript don't contain this tag, nor do Effect - Transform items, I cant target it to zero the rotation or rotate them to the previous rotation value? I cant seem to replace and retain rotation for something that has been rotated through code with rotate() already or via the Effect menu. But maybe I am wrong an just don't know how to target those, I am fumbling so much with this code trying to get it to work at all and trying to get all scenarios to work, I fix one break another, almost to the point of throwing in the towel and giving in to confusion. :-( I have tried so many things that I am even confused writing this as to what works, what doesn't, why, why not, at this point along with how to explain it. ;=) Forgive me. Ugh, I am at a loss, this whole rotation property seems rather challenging compared to the others given this request for outcome.
My basic tests are as follows, I have been testing everything (even through possibly redundant), as I need this to work with ALL scenarios if possible. ;-)
So far it works with these:
- items rotated manually with the mouse
- rotate tool
- the transform window
- right click transform
- Ojbect - Transform - Rotate
So far these do NOT work in retaining the present rotation:
- Effect - Distort & Transform - Transform - Rotate ( Also: scales fine but offsets its position, towards TL? )
- Items rotated via Javascript using obj.rotate(num) ( Also: scales larger when replaced? )
- When I run the script again, specifying a different symbol the rotation is lost
- When I use symbol replace after applying the script the new replaced symbol does not retain the scale
I hope I have stated those correctly, I have done so many tests with so many factors, approaches and code variations that I am thoroughly confused. So that seems to be the status update thus far, this whole rotation property seems rather challenging compared to the others, I guess since so many other factors are involved when that property is involved. I wish rotation was just rotation and could just be read and manipulated more easily. I was curious, even though it is beyound me, does using matrix transforms make this all easier and more straight forward vs tags or are both rather convoluted?
So am I spinning my wheels thinking this approach can be achieved across all those scenarios? Any thoughts, feedback, code, or entire solutions :-) are welcome at this point. Thanks so much to CarlosCanto and everyone else, I greatly appreciate it.

Mail issue: received mail is being replaced by older mail from my inbox

Some of my inbox received mail content is being replaced by older mail from my inbox. Since I receive mail from my gmail account, I have to go there to check the mail which is not replaced. An ideas/suggestions?

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
Note, in 10.5 & up /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/ may or may not exist.
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.
