Some characters gain extra lines or are broken when printing to PDF

I am having a problem with some characters rendering oddly when I print to PDF.
Examples are an extra vertical line next to an upright character, and extra partial curve to the left of an opening parenthesis, or a slight cut-off of a curve in a character.  All of these seem to be in the vertical plane.  It is not consistently tied to particular character combinations - the same word may render correctly in one instance, but incorrectly in another.
I am using Microsoft Word 2007, and printing to PDF via Adobe PDF Converter (CS4).  The font is Gill Sans MT Light, and the document is 230 pages.
Can anyone seen anything similar before, or can someone suggest anything I can look into further?

You may have to turn on "display large images" in the preferences.

  • Apparent page AREA limitation when printing to PDF?

In the process of producing posters for technical presentations, I have many times "printed to PDF" - typically from CorelDraw - with  page sizes as large as 42" x 72". Until a couple of months ago, I was doing so with Acrobat 9 Pro under Windows XP.
Now I'm on a newer machine with Acrobat X Pro under Windows 7 64-bit. I tried to create such a PDF today at 42" x 72", using the same procedure as always, but without success - didn't ever see the usual dialog for selecting the PDF file name and destination. I tried it with a smaller page size - 36" x 72" - and it worked exactly as expected.
I embarked upon a little exploration to see, for a given page width, the maximum page length I could use before it wouldn't create a PDF. Here's what I observed:
    15" x 198.8" works, but 15" x 198.9" does not
    20" x 149.1" works, but 20" x 149.2" does not
    36" x 82.85" works, but 36" x 82.86" does not
    42" x 71.01" works, but 42" x 71.02" does not
Note that, for all of these cases, things cease to work when the area becomes just slightly greater than 2,982 square inches.
I tried some of the same page sizes for printing to PDF from a different application (Autodesk Inventor), and found the same results. It works when the page area is at or below 2,982 square inches, but fails when the area is slightly greater than that. When it fails when printing from Inventor, in addition to not seeing the usual dialog for selecting the PDF file name and destination, I'm also presented with the error message, "Could not start print job".
Does anyone have knowledge of this issue? I have searched and - so far - failed.

    Bump.
I can add now that this system has been upgraded to Acrobat XI Pro.
The problem still persists, with exactly the same behavior observed as before. I can generate a 42" x 71" page, but not a 42" x 72" page.
When trying to create a 42" x 71" page, it works correctly from CorelDraw, Autodesk Inventor, and MicroSoft PowerPoint.
    When trying to create a 42" x 72" page:
    CorelDraw - nothing happens.
Autodesk Inventor - receive error message - "Could not start print job".
MicroSoft PowerPoint - receive error message - "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup." (and more - see attached image).

    Hi Graffiti,
Thanks so much for your resply.  I am happy to say that the problem has been fixed by my customer updating her version of Adobe Reader 9 to the latest version.  I had sent her a few suggestions on how to try to fix the problem including that one from info I had read on the forum etc.. and that was the solution that worked.  I am so relieved that I was able to fix the problem and to answer your question the blank pages were only graphics no text but they were the only pages that the graphics took up the whole page.  I thought that was strange and had her change a setting in preferences for printing large images a solution I read in the forum but it did not work.

  • Characters missing when printing a PDF

    Hi all,
When printing a PDF file (word document converted and digitally signed with Adobe Pro XI) some characters are not printed, they are as blank spaces. The workaround is to print the file as image, with a significant decrease of printing quality. Is there any setting or option to change to avoid this?

If as in the past, this is an issue with an HP print driver. Printing as image is generally the solution, but a lot slower I think.

  • How can I eliminate grid lines of selected cells when printing, in iOS numbers

How can I eliminate grid lines of selected cells when printing, using iOS numbers

    Hi Cmlgfx,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You can style a table to remove grid lines and only show an "outline" around the table itself.
See this article for help with table styles:
Numbers for iOS (iPad): Place and style tables
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3365
To show or hide the table name, table border, and grid lines, alternate row colors, or adjust fonts, tap Table Options at the bottom of the Table window (you may need to scroll up in the window to see it), and then set your preferences using the options in the Table Options window. (When you’re done, tap at the top of the window to see other options.)
    All the best,
    Jeremy

  • Some characters missing when printing a PDF on Canon MP560

    Hi,
I was not sure where to post this. I have a 15" MB Pro and a Canon MP560. I just went to print a PDF invoice and the printed invoice was missing a few letters/characters in random places. They are not missing when viewing the invoice on my Mac but they are if I click print preview.

  • Extra line in script needed, when looked ad with Safari,or not?

    hello to you all,
I'm new here and I know nothing about Safari... that's why I'm here.
    Ok my questions:
I'm building web-site for a small company that has to work with all browsers. I have 5 browsers on my development machine but no safari.
When I use 2 forms in a document, 1 normal and 1 hidden both with a name and id, than it all works in IE, but for firefox, netscape and opera I have to put an extra line into my javascript. " infoForm = parent.document.infoForm " otherwise I get a error-message. How handles Safari these things... do I have to ad a line to my switch (using navigator appName) like "case "Safari"; infoFrom = parent.document.infoForm: break;" or is safari behaving like IE and is it gone a work without this extra line, so I can put in the switch " case "Safari"; break; ". Is Safari identifying itself as Safari or differed?
I hope one you can help me.
    thanks in advance.
    regards,
    Douwe

    Hi,
Just check what does the value &RKEY& is holding, whether is it displaying on output, and what what location, see that no blank lines before the DEFINE statement.
or just copy the whole statements from DEFINE upto Y7&RKEY&, to just above the item variables and see the output. Just comment the down lones and paste them above.
    See below
    /:DEFINE &CKEY& = &TVBDPL-MATNR&

  • Safari breaks lines after every word when printing some web pages

Most pages print fine, but there are a few where Safari totally mangles the formatting when trying to print.
For example, this page on Microsoft's support website. It looks fine in Safari, but when I try and print it, all the content gets pushed to the left edge of the page, with each word appearing on a new line. This causes the content to take up 15 pages!
I've tested this in Safari 7.1 in Mavericks, and Safari 8.0 in Yosemite. The results are identical in both versions.
The same web page prints normally from Chrome or Firefox, and is only 3 pages long when printed.
Note: Microsoft's website isn't the only place I've seen Safari do this, but it's the only example I have right now.

This happens on three different Macs. Those Macs have no problem printing from other apps, including other browsers.
Can you please try printing that web page on your Mac (with Safari), and letting me know what happens?
    Here's a link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2360509
Just load that page, then try printing it.
Note: You don't even need to actually print it. Just hit ⌘-P, and you'll see the bad formatting in the Print dialog box.

  • Report Title and Text Area issue when exported to pdf using Viewer

    Hi there,
We are using OracleBI Discoverer Version 10.1.2.55.26
We have reports that displays Report title containing the following
    - Report Title
    - Runt Date and Time
    - Page No
And text area which displays 'Last Page'
Following properties are set at the worksheet level using page setup
Report Title --> 'Print on every Page'
Text Area --> 'Print on last page'
The report when exported to PDF using Discoverer plus works fine and displays report title and text area as defeined.
But when we try to export the same report to pdf from Discoverer viewer, it displays
    - Report title on first page only.
    - text area on all pages
All our users accesses report using discoverer viewer so we cannot open discoverer plus to them.
Is there a solution which will enable us to export the report in pdf using discoverer viewer and displays the same output as discoverer plus.
Please let me know... If you have any questions then please feel free to ask.
Thanks in advance for your help...
    Manish

but when opened on other os x machines some text is colored differently than it should be
Well, if typographic objects are colour managed, the colour appearance is dependent on the source ICC profile that describes the colourants in the typographic objects and the destination ICC profile that describes the colours the display is able to form and the RBC colourant combinations that will form those colours.
In general, typographic objects should have special treatment, since the expectation is not that typographic objects should be colour managed, but that typographic objects should simple be set to the maximum density of dark. On a display, that is R=0 G=0 B=0 and on a seperations device (a lithographic press) that is C=0 M=0 Y=0 K=100.
If for some reason typographic objects are colour managed, and if the ICC profiles for the displays are off by half a mile or more in relation to the actual state of the display system, then the colours will not be the same. On the other hand, if those displays are calibrated and characterized, then the colourants will be converted to form the same colours on the displays.

  • Problem with dashed line spacing when printing to pdf

    Hi all,
this may be a problem with my pdf program (I use bluebeam), but maybe someone will have an idea how to fix it whether in indesign or bluebeam.
so I made a dashed line using the stroke command in indesign. I need to have the spacing set to 3pt dash and 2pt space. I also need to keep the lineweight to 0.5...this all works fine and appears correctly in indesign when I preview
the problem is that some of the dashed lines, but not all of them, change size and spacing in the pdf when I view it. it seems to change when I zoom in and out as well. I thought maybe this was just some odd feature with bluebeam and it would still print to the correct size, but it does not, it prints the lines as different sizes. does anyone have an idea why this happens and how to fix? ive viewed and printed from adobe reader and it seems to be okay there but this file will be accessed by multiple other people and they may not be opening and printing in adobe reader..
    thanks guys

When you export a PDF you will notice that you are exporting to Adobe PDF. Using any reader beyond Acrobat Pro or Reader is a crapshoot.
For issues with Bluebeam I suggest you contact the developer.

  • Acrobat 10.1.5 extra graphics when printing to pdf

When printing from MS Project to Acrobat, I get extra lines(thin blue/purple, see attached image) on the last half of the document. It looks fine in my coworkers, she is running Acrobat 9 though. Any thoughts?

Starting with the image itself, what kind is it? Where is it located, locally or on a network? How is it inserted in the FM file, i.e.  by reference or as an OLE object?
Is this a single file or a book with multiple chapters? If it's multiple chapters, does the graphic behave correctly when PDFing the individual chapter? Are there other images of the same type and location that do print correctly?
Can you confirm whether either or both systems have had the MS hotfix 952909 applied:

  • What would cause characters to be replaced by glyphs when printing a PDF via PostScript driver?

When printing PDFs to our laser printers, occasionally a PDF will degrade, with many characters being replaced by little square glyphs. It never happens on the first page, but usually within the first ten pages if it is going to. The file will cause the same effect on similar printers, and is exclusive to PostScript- the PCL driver will print the file as expected. There is nothing visibly wrong in the PDF, and I am trying to isolate the cause of this problem. Once it starts the problem can get worse, but I've never seen it get better or "work itself out".  The sample above is a scan of the output, and the original PDF was version 1.4, the printer is an HP Laserjet 9050dn
    Thanks for your help!

  • Results are different when printing from CS5 and CS4

A file that printed fine with Photoshop CS 4 printed very dark when printed with CS5, with no changes made to the settings. Has anyone else had this problem?

RE: "You don't indicate what Xerox printers you have"
In my first post I named it, is that the information you need?
    Docucolor 3535 using Splash 3535
That's interesting, so I have to find a way to turn off the printer's Color Management function? I mailed them, hope they can tell me how to do it easily. They usually just tell me to not use any profiles and so on, but that's the general rule in this area, I'm really tired of hearing it. Everybody seems to think profiles and LAB mode are nuclear science and I should stay away from it.
Anyway, the test image I'm using is a simple photograph (size A3, 300dpi), so no transparencies at all. I'm placing this image into an equally large ID file and print it from ID, then export it to PDF-X/3 and print it from Acrobat. Hope that helps.

  • Page 2 and beyond pages are rotated when printed

When printing multiple page landscape documents from InDesign CS5 to our Canon Imagerunner C4080, everything after page 1 is rotated 90 degrees. So far all I can do is print one page at a time. This happens on all docs, newly created as well as converted from CS4 and CS3.
Drivers freshly installed with the OS. All other applications work fine. PDFs are fine.
OS X 10.6.4 on brand new iMac.
    Any ideas?

There are a few Bugs in Firefox that causes that to happen. I have been waiting 8 1/2 years for those Bugs to be fixed.
Probably caused by one of these three Bugs: <br />
