Some CS4 on XP-32bit Questions and Issues

Now that I have CS4 running on XP I'm trying to do some real work with it. First thing I do is disable tabbed windows and other new features as they have yet to prove themselves useful in my workflow. Perhaps I'll grow to appreciate them. But for now I'm just trying to get the app to work with the good ol' floating windows.
1) Can I stop new images opening with a Window that's glued to the top left corner of my screen? Past versions of PS just opened a floating Window. CS4 obliges me to 'unstick' the Window from the top left corner every time I open a new image. I've scoured the preferences but have yet to find any way to turn off this feature.
2) When grabbing the top bar of an open image window to move it on my screen I find it to be sluggish. With previous versions of PS one would grab the top of the image window and move it quickly on your screen to wherever you want. The response was pretty will instantaneous. With CS4 there seems to be a very slight lag whereby the move is occurring slightly behind the cursor moving it. It's not a huge lag. Just enough to get the sense that there's something amiss. I'll try it in Vista64 to see if the same thing is occurring there.

RE floating windows, (have to assume this is a bug)
I too find it unexpected behavior that despite unchecking in CS4 Preferences / Interface the Enable floating document window docking and Open documents as tabs , a new image ALWAYS opens docked to the top left of the framed workspace.
Things get even more puzzling if one has PS CS4 set as a window on part of the monitor area (Restored Down)- The new image will always be opened within that restored down window, and in my case it is a microscopic dot on the screen.
You can drag the new image away from the framed workspace to another area of the monitor, and enlarge it with a mouse wheel or the zoom tool, but should you use the keyboard shortcuts of CTRL + +, or CTRL + -, or CTRL + 0, the image window immediately snaps back into the framed document window, and that is not good.
Another unexpected behavior in CS4 is the doing away with the right-click context menu on the top bar of an open image. In previous PS versions that brought up a very useful menu that included Image Size; Canvas; etc. That is gone.
What I really love in CS4 is the new Adjustments Panel, and once Configurator is made available, I will be able to configure the interface to my liking.

Upgrading questions and issues

We are trying to move from Headstart version label of 18 in the current 6i repository. I think it is 6.5 or something like that. We are trying to move to Headstart version 6.5.3.2. We currently are using Headstart in our 6i Repository. To do this we have taken a RAU export from the 6i database (named ecsd) and imported into a new database (named repos1). The database repos1 is to be the 9i repository.
It seems this repository has been through at least one version of Headstart before this. In the Edit workspace it says there is a version 1.0 excluded from the workarea.
I am constrained to remove the older HeadStart objects by management. I cannot simply exclude the application from the workarea. Is this OK to do?
When I follow the Installation Instructions for installing Headstart 6.5.3.0 I really am not finding a section that deals with upgrading a repository to a newer version of Headstart or removing a version of Headstart. Is there a document on this subject? Are there any words of advice for me?
It seems to me that to references the newly installed Headstart objects what is required is to Edit Generator Preference then to set the Preference Set to the new Headstart which seems to be QMS65_RECOMMENDED. Is this correct?

Solid work overall on Leopard but I have some Questions, Issues and Suggestions-
Is there a way to allow custom swipes for showing desktop and swipes to go back to the higher folders in Finder?? (Not a fan of hot corners as a work around)
The 4 finger swipes are waaaaaayyy overdone and would like to see some Leopard's grace of simplicity back. The 4 fingers swipes do not work consistantly. Only 70% of the time they are registered.
Also 3 finger back swipes and back - to- normal screen (after going full screen) seems broken in Chrome. The blue back-to -normal screen icon does not appear; althought Shift+ Cmd+ F seems to do the trick. I thought full screen implemention was system wide?
Would like to see option to disable launchpad just like dashboards. With Spotlight/Quick Silver and Application shortcut on Dock the launchpad feature seems almost useless.
While browsing through pictures after selecting change profile picture option, the system preference crashed multiple times. Preview crashed as well several times while opening and playing with images larger than 3 MP.
While changing the font size of Safari fonts, the size jumps from 14 px to 18 px.. whatever happened to 16 px? Copy pasting '16' seems to work tho. Weird behavior! At 16 px the spacing between the lines are riciculously small. That makes the font bigger but unreadable. Increasing the font size simply increase the font size without adjusting the line spacing!! how smart of safari! (ex- Increase font size in Chrome by 1 and make Safari font size 16 and go to news.google dot com page.)
While moving back and forth between desktops the items( icons to be specific) on screen has 2 second lag while appearing. Suggestion- How about the icons and dock remain static while the apps and backgrond image change?
Solid grey borders for Quick view?? And Solid black controls while on slideshow on preview??? Just curious, how does that help over the previous semi transparent theme in leopard?

Creating a slideshow: Questions and Issues

Greetings Premiere Users-
I am completely new to using Premiere. I have been using iMovie to create slideshows but am completely frustrated by the program's inner workings.
I have my images and audio in bins and now beginning to connect the pieces but am running into some problems.
1. I don't understand how to setup the number of slides to the length of audio. Upon opening the Preferences panel and selecting "General" it appears that I need to enter some value with respect to "Video Transition Default Duration of "30 Frames" and the Still Image Default Duration of "150 Frames". What I don't comprehend is if I have 397 seconds of audio and 129 still images and I want to space them across the audio, what values should I use?
2. My current project has 129 images which currently extends beyond my video. I selected the images, chose "Speed Duration", and entered 3:00 which would put my images well within the audio. The problem is that the first so many images have a space between them rather than being contiguous like the second half of them. I did select the "ripple" checkbox as I have read should be selected.
3. This slideshow is going to be seen on a projector, is there a recommended size that I should create this in, e.g. 800x600, etc...?

Hey Doug,
1.) I assume you're editing on a 30fps sequence. So you have 397 seconds of audio, which is 397 x 30fps = 11,910 frames worth of audio. So take 11,910 and divide by 129 (photos) = 92 frames per image. So in the Premiere Pro preferences, change the frame number to 92 frames. Keep in mind, this will only affect any future images that you import or create in Premiere once this change has been made. So you will have to remove your photos from the project bin and re-import them for the timing change to take effect.
2.) By selecting the ripple edit, shifting trailing clips button, this should take care of your problem. Were the images at different time durations, or were all of them the same.
3.) Regarding your projects resolution, you need to find out if you want this project to be a widescreen (16:9) or standard (4:3) ratio. Personally I would stick with widescreen since this is how 99.9% of video productions are nowadays. If this is what you want, I would create a 720p project. This is 1280x720 and will playback nicely on your 800x600 projector. You obviously will have the letterbox effect, black bars on the top and bottom of your screen. If you would rather fill the projector screen, you can create a custom project and manually enter in your resolution of 800x600 (this will only work is you're going to playback the video file from a computer and not a video DVD, as you may know, DVDs res is locked at 720x480 (NTSF). You can set up the custom res when creating a new sequence. Or to keep things a little simplier, just create a DV 720x480 4:3 project.

Please Advise: iPod mini 1st gen. questions and issues

Hi all, thanks for your attention!
I have, what I believe, is a 1st generation iPod mini - I purchased it in early/mid 2004. I love it, and don't want to just trade it in for one of the newer ones, that do 5 million more things than I really need. I just need my music and contacts, that's all. The problem is that it now only plays about 2 hours before tragically and dramatically dying of "insufficient battery power"!
The battery life was never great - even when new - about 6 hours of play time. I heard, soon after I purchased it, that they had come out with a "second generation" one that had more than double the battery life. I think I read something about the disapointing battery life of the "first generation" being the reason for the re-release of the updated model.
Anyway, later I heard (maybe MacWorld?) that the only difference between the two was the battery that was put in it, and that you could take a "second generation" iPod mini battery and swap it into a "first genaration", and voila: you have converted your 1st gen. into a second gen. and more than doubled your battery life.
Is this true? If not, does anyone know what IS the difference bettween the two generations?
I am thinking that the best thing to do is to go to the Apple Store and have them replace the battery with a new one, but which one do I tell them to put in? 1st gen., that has poor battery life, or can I get away with 2nd gen., and enjoy the extra longevity?

Besides the scrolling feature built into the click-wheel, there is a microswitch button for each function. In other words, Menu, Forwards, Backwards, Play/Pause and Center Button each have their own switch that’s activated when you press that part of the wheel.
It’s possible that the switch for the Forward function has failed. Does that button work in ANY menu area. Do the other buttons work? If you’re in the middle of an album, can you go backwards in the list of songs?
I was just working on the click-wheel on one of my Mini a couple of days ago. I bought a used one and the prev other had some kind of decal over the scroll and the adhesive virtually glued the center button to the rest of the wheel.
Hopefully, it’s just the Mini’s click-wheels are they’re available on eBay for about $10 and can be user-replaced, if you’re VERY careful.
I also have an old 1st gen Mini that could be a parts donor and could do this for you. I could also replace the harddrive with a 32gb Compact Flash card and new battery while the Mini is opened, if your interested. I’ve done a BUNCH of those and they work great. I'm even selling one of them on eBay now.

Macbook pro Late 2013 retina display battery questions and issues

Hi,
So I was a bit suspicious about my macbook pro 2013 13 inch retina display models battery, its the latest macbook pro 13 inch. The website says that it will last for 9 hours but mines lasted for only 6.19 hours. All the apps I used were probably Xcode (doing coding projects), Photoshop, Safari and Notes. I did keep the brightness high and also had bluetooth on for a while. Is this a good battery life for my mac or should I go back to the Apple Store and tell them to fix my battery?

Did your conditions exactly match those conditions? If you want a charge to last as long as possible, then make the display as dim as you can stand it, and minimize your use of Bluetooth and energy-hungry apps like Photoshop and Xcode compilers. To maximize the battery’s life, start recharging it when it gets down to 20%.

Replacing a screen Questions and Issues.

I have a dv5z-1000 base model, 3Gb ram, AMD Athlon X2 QL-60, ATI grafx card. I can not find anywhere one the board what ATI it is. I only know it is ATI frin updating the drivers so many times. My screen went Blank. Will not work when I turn it on. I know it has to be the LCD because the system will work if i plug it into an external monitor. When i look up new screens I found that the make a screen exactly like the one i have just a higher resolution. can i drop it in? My current screen part number is B154EW02 V.7 with 1280x800 resolution. The other screen listed for my computer is 1680x1050. are these compatible? Can I spend the extra $10 and get a higher resolution? Will it would the part vender said it may or may not. I called HP tech and they just tried to get me to sell me stuff. can anyone tell me if i buy the higher resolution and plug it in will it work?

CDNG Workflow questions and issues

This applies to both AE and PPro.
As far as i can tell, when a cDNG sequence is imported we get the ACR dialog. This is used to basically pregrade that file, create a 'look' for it, then we get the footage. However the footage we get appears to be a reduced section of the full file. In other words i don't get the full linear range of the DNG to work with in AE or PPro. If i reduce exposure on the file it acts like a sRGB jpeg and whites grey down. Whereas if i adjust exposure in the ACR dialog it works as i would expect.
Is this the case? What are we actually getting out of the source file?
All i want is full range linear from the DNG but this doesn't appear possible?

The best way is to call applecare (800) APL-CARE (800-275-2273). You can also email them but you need to create a case here https://getsupport.apple.com/Issues.action. When I did it it took about 10 mins.

Keyboard backlight question and/or issue

When I am on a call after like 30-60 seconds the screen and keyboard dim and then go off. I am using a bluetooth but it also does this on handset audio when you do not press a key for a while during a call. I know this is normal. What I do not know is if the next part is normal. On the Tour the Green Talk key, menu, back, and red end key all stay lit up after the dim. I had to exchange my first tour and on this second one sometimes even the main row (green, menu, back, end keys) will dim so the entire keyboard is not lit up. That main row is lit up sometimes and sometimes not. Sort of like how the LCD dims sometimes and then the backlight will come back on for no reason like all blackberry's seem to do. Is my main row backlighting acting normal or is that row supposed to be lit the whole time and i have a short?

I too would love to know the answer to this question.

If the answer to question 7 is greater than 2 hours ... my assumption would be that you probably had never done it before and it wouldn't matter that you got the first six questions correct.
