Some data sent out around midnight every night?

hi, 2 first time iphone users in the house. i noticed when looking at my account online that right around midnight each night since we got the phones there is some data sent out. in settings we have wifi off, notifications on, location services on, but all apps that use it turned off. my phone has no mail set up, my wife is using hotmail. last night we turned her phone completely off and the data was not sent. does anyone have any idea what this data could be? is it normal for all iphones? thanks for any help.

Just remember even if you get a phone that has mediaNet or similar sounding functions on other networks that allow checking the weather, downloading ringtones, etc. you are going to see the same thing. You aren't charged for whatever is going on (that I've confirmed) but I've also seen it on non-smartphones on my family plan.
Only way you are probably going to avoid it is to go off the grip: drop the cell phone altogether. Along with all internet connections, Facebook, Tweeter, Foursquare, Satellite television, cable, etc. Go with over-the-air television and a simple landline phone.
But darn, now they've put in those smart electric meters and those are also collecting data on you. Better get a generator. Also, cash only, no banking account.

  • IMac turns on at midnight, every night

My iMac turns on at midnight every night. The energy saver settings says it will not turn on itself, even though it does. What's the problem?

    Hi srojtas
First reset the iMac's SMC (System Management Controller) exactly following the instructions in the following link.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446-en
Then in the "Energy Saver Preference / Options" be sure that the box "Restart automatically after a power failure" is unchecked, just in case something else is interrupting the iMac's power at that time.
Lastly are you using elgato iTV? If so look at the discussions thread below!

  • New Photos App take a very long time to upload 20 Pictures, while the Activity Monitor is showing much more data sent (MB) than these two pictues

The New photos app is taking a very long time to upload images. It stays a very long time at 20,104 for example. When I check the Activity Monitor (Network) it shows that the computer is actually uploading stuff. After about 2 hours, only 20 Pics&Videos are uploaded. The uploaded pics and videos are about 500MB while the data sent is around 1GB. I am positive that Photos is the only thing uploading data at the moment.
    Anyone else facing this problem?

It can take days, even weeks.
Tell me 2 things and I will tell you the estimated upload time.
1 How big is your Library (in GB)
2 How fast is your upload speed.
Or you can just use the upload time calculator and do it yourself

  • Web Service over SSL hangs if sent data size exceeds around 12Kb

    Hi,
I have a Web Service running on a WebLogic Server 10.3. One of its purposes is to send and receive documents over a one-way SSL connection. The service runs fine if the documents are smaller than around 12Kb, however if its larger than that, the service simply hangs. From SSL debug information it looks like some data is sent but afterwards it simply stops. When testing the Web Service without SSL it works fine, which points to an SSL issue. Also, surprisingly, when it receives documents over the SSL, it also works fine. I assumed there is a parameter that limits the size of the POST message sent over SSL, however all the parameters that I found, that could do that, were already set to unlimited.

We ended up resolving this issue. It turned out to be something really simple. The client that was sending the soap traffic did not have the proper SSL certificate installed on the server that was generating the soap traffic.

  • Incoming MIDI data from unassociated devices still gets sent out in 2.1.3

The problem I have reported numerous times for previous versions of MainStage is still present in 2.1.3.
An incoming MIDI CC value that is NOT associated with a device is being sent to other channel strips. Last night before rehearsal, I added a Minimoog XL into my rig. It's connected via its own MIDI port on a MOTU 128 Express. I discovered that when I turned the Vol control on the Minimoog, it sent out CC 7 and CC 39 (LSB values for volume) messages to a channel strip associated with a VocalLive voice processor and had absolutely NOTHING to do with the Minimoog.
As reported before, this also happens for CC80 and CC81 and I cannot see any reason why such events would get sent out to other channel strips if there is no explicit mapping defined.
I had to add in new dummy knobs to explicitly block these values, further polluting my layout, which is already full of knobs defined just for blocking stuff.
A generic MIDI device set to listen on all inputs and MIDI channels with output blocked does NOT stop this from happening.
More details are in these older threads:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/12572359#12572359 and with more detail (including how to reproduce) at
https://discussions.apple.com/message/15483068#15483068 is still present in 2.1.3
(I've already submitted this at the feedback link (which, by the way, has no entry for 2.1.3 in it) but I am quite pessimistic about this getting fixed, it has survived many versions of MainStage....I don't understand why)
    This is so disappointing.

That's partially why I'm so concerned about this --- I cannot conceive of a scenario where this behavior makes any sense --- essentially some external synth can generate arbitrary MIDI data which just goes out through other channels, and that data is at best of no interest and at worst can actually screw up the receiving device (which happened to me when my Korg Oasys was sending out CC80/CC81 as part of a program change and it was changing a parameter on my Minimoog)
It seems to me that they could have fixed this quite easily by providing (perhaps an extended version of) a MIDI Device that REALLY blocks everything so users with the problem could just throw that one gadget into the layout instead of having to make a bunch of knobs to block all sorts of things.

At all other times of day the broadband lives up to expectations.  Any advise appreciated, we previous had no problems with BE Broadband except for dire connections to US/Japan Servers (Sony/Square Enix etc), which was pretty much a problem of insufficient bandwidth on their backbone network.

    A "lay" explanation is this.
As IMJ has stated, at night the noise margin is dropping to a level whereby it becomes difficult for the DSL to bitload the data into the ADSL spectrum without undue error correction and bitswapping, and often increased error rate.
This situation tends to throttle down throughput .... and if it got worse, which clearly it isn't doing, it's just staying at a poor level .... the modem would drop the connection, and renegotiate .... and come back with target margin, at which juncture it would bitload and throughput would return to normal.
So what IMJ is saying is ... if it doesn;t drop and continues to hobble along .... force a drop, or reset it, and it will come back as if it had dropped by the modem forcing a drop.
In the end DLM will hopefully get hold of the situation and set the line parameters in a fashion which will sustain a connection and bitload properly 24 hours a day .... but sometimes it needs help, and especially if it didn't linetrain properly.
If it continues manual intervention is useful to set the noise margin accordingly until the line has re-trained.
Resetting the hub or modem is not a good idea with DSL, however in this instance if an automatic cure is not forthcoming, it is the ONLY time I would advocate a router reset, especially at night, when margin is depleted.

  • Skype 7.3 crashing around same time every night

Skype has been crashing every night, right before I go to bed Skype.exe ends up consuming almost 2GB of memory for some reason, at around the same time every night, and there are constant errors that Skype is out of memory, and it eventually stops responding completely until I end the process.
Running Windows 7 64bit with the latest updates installed, and Skype 7.3 latest build. Screenshot attached.
    Attachments:
    2015-04-14 02-13-29.jpg ‏23 KB

It really can't be any other software or hardware changes, as no changes have been made at all since the Skype update which caused this issue to start occuring.
As this particular system and user account are locked down and used almost exclusively just for Skype by an elderly retired person who runs no other applications, and has made no other changes to the system within that time that Skype has been updated and this issue has started occuring.
The Skype window remains open after they launch it in the morning, without minimizing it or using any other applications which could potentially interfere.
Considering the user is an elderly person with limited computer knowledge, when this issue occurs they are unable to recover the system themselves from its non responsive state, requiring intervention by us fix it on a nightly basis which is less than ideal for us, and them.

  • How to defrag after Shrinking the data and log every night

OK, my shop has a shrink job that runs every night. It shrinks the data and log files. DBCC SHRINKFILE (filename,1). We have recovery model Simple.
So reading that SHRINK is horrible for the data file because of fragmentation, so looking to stop the daily job. BUt this job has been running everyday for years right after the ETL. We have a big nightly ETL process that (1) truncates several
hundred SQL tables and then BULK INSERT from the AS400 (2) for really large tables we just bring in the last X number of days from the AS400 and insert those records into the SQL table. We have very few indexes, but do have some on the really
large tables. FYI - The SQL Servers are at the clients' sites.
What kind of fragmentation has the SHRINK on the data file caused? how would it affect the ETL, and retrieval of data during the day? how can the fragmentation be fixed?

    Hello,
Databases suffer from fragmentation on indexes as explained
here, but they suffer from physical fragmentation at the storage level also.
When the shrinking process shrinks a data file and recover space from the disk and the data file needs to grow again as part of your ETL process the new portion of the data file will rarely be contiguous to the rest of the data file on disk, and if this
shrink process happens many times, the data file may be spread among many tracks on the disk. This increases the disk requests required to write data on a fragmented data file and increases disk requests to create new data files. In general, fragmentation
will originate that what should be a simple I/O request has to be broken on many disk requests, making disk activity and performance less predictable and making disk queues larger.
My suggestion is to stop sql server services during maintenance window, defragment disk using the Windows Defrag tool or a third party tool, when finish start SQL Server services again, then defrag indexes on your databases.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hi I have this problem that my iPad 4 stops connecting to the wifi at around 9:30 every night

Hi I have this problem that my iPad 4 stops connecting to the wifi at around 9:30 every night but my iPhone 5 and Mac mini still connects to the same wifi network I have called apple support and they had no clue what the problem is, have tried changing the http settings to auto and resetting the network setting on the iPad but no luck so far would appreciate any help thanks josh

One possibility is that there is an allowed time period for access programmed into your WiFi router for the MAC address of your iPad.
What make, model, and version WiFi router do you have?
Another possibility is that you are getting some WiFi interference from a nearby WiFi network which is automatically turning on at 9:30 PM. A nearby home security system could be the culprit.

  • Use Automator to launch a program every night at midnight

I want Automator to launch Tivo Transfer every night at midnight. How would I set that up? Thanks!

You can actually create an iCal event that will run an AppleScript or Automator action at a given time, and have that event repeat at the same time every day. Another way is to use a Cron job.
    For iCal:
    1. Save the Automator workflow as an application.
    2. Select Add Alarm on a new or current event.
    3. Select Open File: Other, and open your saved workflow application.
    4. Enter the time and date that you want the workflow to run.
If iCal is not running at the scheduled time, the workflow will run when iCal is next opened.

  • I don't have enough space to update my iPhone. I back it up every night and I'm wonering if I can reset it, update, and then use backup to restore my data.

I don't have enough space to update my iPhone 5s. I back it up every night. I'm wondering if I can reset, update and then add the data back to my phone. Is there a better way? I've tried deleting pics and apps but still can't get enough room.

Try updating it via iTunes on a computer.
Also, to find out what is taking up so much storage go to Settings>General>Usage>Manage Storage. It will list what is taking up your storage starting with the one that is taking up the largest amount.

  • Safari logs me out of websites every day at midnight

A few days ago I was browsing the internet and Safari randomly closed and asked me to "reset" so that it would work. I clicked reset and didn't lose my bookmarks and nothing seemed to be different. At midnight that night Safari logged me out of the websites that I had been logged into, and has done this every night at midnight ever since. Is there any way to fix this? I'd love to have it back like it was.

    Hi Sonny,
Can you explain in a bit more detail the logging out?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
