Some dock icons appearing with question marks

I backed up my hard drive, erased it, transferred backup to hard disk, and have had a few problems since. Today, the fourth time I turned on the computer since doing all this, startup produced ? for 6 dock icons: firefox, microsoft word and excel, appleworks, etc.
Please help!
imac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Karen --
Take the icons in the dock (one at a time) and quickly drag them to the desktop. You should hear a "poof" sound, and the icon will disappear.
Then go back to your Applications folder and take the icon from Applications and drag it on to the dock.
Hopefully that will work for you.

  • Some math elements appear as question marks in equations - FM9/Win7Pro

    Hello everyone,
I am facing the issue that some math elements appear as question marks in equations; for example, the summation and angle symbols.
The approximately equal or the alpha symbols, for example, appear correctly.
    The symbol font is installed.
    System specs:
FrameMaker 9 with the latest patches installed.
Windows 7 Professional with the latest updates installed.
The strange thing is that math elements appear correctly using virtual computers on my computer (Windows XP and Windows 7 Ultimate on VMWare).
Same maker.ini file and fonts are present on all (real and virtual) computers.
I have reinstalled FrameMaker already on my real computer (where I have the trouble) and it did not solve the issue.
I have checked (I think) all question mark related topics (when question marks are displayed instead of the correct characters) on this site, but none of them provided the solution to my problem.
    I would appreciate your help!
    Thanks,
    András

    Hi Sheila,
    Thank you for your response.
I use Adobe PDF as the default printer on both the real and virtual computers and I do not know the SetPrint utility.
I see the question marks appear in the FM files as well as in the printed PDF. It makes me think it is not a printing issue.
c:\windows\fonts is provided as the Font Source in the Embedding box for the Adobe PDF printer both on my real computer and my virtual one.
The SymbolMT font is listed in both cases in the Embedding box, which is (probably) referred to as Symbol Regular when I open the c:\windows\fonts folder using Windows Explorer. No other symbol fonts seem to be installed in this folder. I do not know how to check what other folders FM considers.
By the way, I can insert the summation character, for example, as a simple character using the Equations editor correctly, the problem comes when I try to insert it as a math element.
I have attached an example screenshot.
    Thanks,
    András

  • Icon Folder with question mark

    Hi
    My MacBook doesn't boot anymore.
When i start up my mac, I get an icon with a folder with a flashing question mark in it.
I tried to re-install the OS but when it gets to the part where it asks where to install everything, my hard disk doesn't appear. It doesn't appear nether if I use Disk Utility.
    Thanks for your help

Since the drive is not showing up, there's a good chance that it has failed. Apple has had some problems with Seagate OEM drives, and even has a replacement program. If you feel confident enough to take off the "L" bracket that covers the RAM bays and hard drive bay, you could slip the hard drive out and check to see if it's a Seagate, then contact Apple either through customer service or the genius bar at an Apple store. You could also replace the drive yourself buying a notebook HD from Macsales or Newegg.

  • I just restore my Mac, and now instead the dock icon I have question marks.

The only icons I have are: finder, documents and downloads.
I also used to have parallels and now I don't.

Drag off the ?'s and let go, (poofy) and just drag and drop into the Dock new copies from the original applications icons in your applicaiotns folder to make new aliases.

it takes forever to open my mailbox (I have dsl) and a long time to send email with an attachment. Everything with my email (.mac) is very slow, and it wasn't always like this.

  • Folder with Question Mark, to Apple Icon, to Kernel Screen at Startup.

At startup Folder with Question Mark, Followed all steps to resolve it to no avail, I try to re-install Snow Leopard and Apple Icon with Grey screen appears, then Kernel screen.
I cannot get past the Kernel screen.  No options to click anything, like system preferences or anything. I have a Macbook, with Snow Leopard.  Any help would be much appreciated.
I tried Pram Reset and everything.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply Mende.
I tried that, it goes to the apple icon, however after about 10 seconds of the apple it goes straight to the Kernel screen.  It doesn't give me the options of opening anything. Infact it doesn't even have a mouse curser.
If I hold "option" it gives me the option of choosing only the "Leopard DVD" but that's it and then it goes to the Kernel Screen
Again, thanks for the taking the time to help me out.

  • Folder icon with question mark?

I turned my computer on yesterday and it wasn't powering on as usual. First the grey-blue screen stays on forever and then this flashing folder icon appears with a question mark. I am not able to log on or start up any operations.
    please help!

    Hi Radhika Rao,
    welcome to macbook forum.
If after you follow Mort suggestion, your HD is not showing up like Meki case, then Kane is right that your HD is failed. But if you manage to repair disk and still you cannot boot from it, you might need to reinstall the OS X, just installed using archieve and install option.
You can also insert the installer disk and restart while pressing alt/option key and if the screen only give installer disk system folder as option to start then your HD is failed as suspected.
If you still under warranty, apple will replace your HD for free, but if not, they might charge you for new HD, I would buy the HD and install it myself (way more cheaper and I can choose the size of the HD) using this manual:
    http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/macbook/
    Good Luck.

  • White screen with flashing file icon with question mark mean

What does this mean.   We are getting a white screen with flashing file icon with question mark inside the file.

It almost certainly means it can't find a bootable volume (one with OS X on it).
Which means most likely you will have to find your original system installation DVD and install it. Then you should figure out what caused the problem.
Read this to diagnose it before resorting to reinstalling the OS:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440
    Excerpt:
    Additional steps
If your Mac still starts to a flashing question mark, follow the steps below. If any step resolves the issue, you don't need to continue to the next one.
Select your Mac OS X startup disk with Startup Manager by restarting and holding the Option key. After your Mac starts up, restart again to verify that the flashing question mark does not appear.
If the issue persists, insert your Mac OS X installation disc. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc.
MacBook Air note: On a MacBook Air, there are two options for starting up from Mac OS X media: Either connect a MacBook Air SuperDrive to the MacBook Air via the USB port and restart the computer, holding down the C key during startup, or use Remote Install Mac OS X to startup from a system software DVD that's located on a partner computer. Once started up from Mac OS X media, skip to step 3.
Restart the computer, then hold the C key during startup.
From the Utilities menu, choose Disk Utility. Don't click Continue.
Select your Mac OS X disk (named "Macintosh HD" by default) in the left side of the Disk Utility window.
    Click the First Aid tab.
Click Repair Disk to verify and repair any issues with your Mac OS X startup disk.
After repairing the disk, try to start up normally.
Important: If Disk Utility finds issues it cannot repair, you may need to back up as much of your data as possible (or use Time Machine to back up to a different disk), then erase the disk and reinstall Mac OS X. You should back up important files and data before erasing a drive. Erasing deletes everything on the hard disk (including things on your desktop). Also, you can install Mac OS X onto an external disk, start from the external disk, and use Migration Assistant to transfer items from your usual internal Mac OS X startup disk to the external disk, then erase the internal disk and reinstall Mac OS X.
If the issue persists, and Disk Utility didn't find any irreparable issues, quit Disk Utility, quit the Installer, select your disk when prompted, and restart.
If the issue continues, reset PRAM. Note: After resetting PRAM, if the computer starts up normally, reselect the startup disk in the Startup Disk preferences.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, start up from the Mac OS X Installation disc and reinstall Mac OS X.

  • Blinking Folder Icon with Question Mark at startup - Is my HD dead?

I was uploading a .Mov file to my idisk when I got an error message - not sure what it said. But the screen dimmed, and then froze. I held down the power to power down - which it did.
When I fired it back up, I heard the startup sound - then the screen went white. A gray folder icon appears with a question mark over it - and it blinks.
I tried powering down again and unplugging, and also powering on with all peripherals unplugged. Again I get the white screen, folder icon and question mark.
That .Mov was being uploaded as a freelance project for Google due tomorrow morning. Great timing! Am I screwed?
    Thanks!
    Gordon

I booted from the Mac OS X Install disk and opened the Disk Utility.
The options for disks to repair are
    1. The Mac OS X Install Disk 1
    2. A drive that's simply labeled "Media."
Is this "Media" disk my HD? I'm not getting any options to repair the disk.
    Disk Description: Media
    Connection Bus: Serial ATA 2
    Connection Type: Internal
Total Capacity: 0 Bytes - that doesn't sound good.
    Write Status: Read/Write
    Again, thanks for your help.

  • Flashing folder icons with question mark

After reading through the forums I've found a few discussions and users that have similar problems as me but haven't seen anything that deals directly with my issues.
After upgrading to Leopard last night, it ran sluggishly for about 15 minutes. I got impatient and decided to restart. While trying to restart it froze, so I just shut my powerbook down. When I tried to boot back up I got the "flashing folder icons with question mark", I've since found out that it isn't finding any type of drive to boot off of. I reset the pram, tried to reboot with the same result. Tried to boot up using cmd-s but still got nothing but flashing folders. Booted up from the Leopard install disc to try and do an archive and install and it said it couldn't upgrade because it couldn't find tiger on my machine. So I booted from the Tiger install discs to try and re-install tiger again. Tiger cant find my HD to install on; I'm thinking this may be due to Leopards install. I ran disk utility and it couldn't complete the verifying process. I got this "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit."
After work I'm going to try to boot up in target mode to pull any data i can and try erase my HD and install from there.
To me it seems like a HD issue. Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks in advanced.

The "sluggishness" is perfectly normal. It's well-known and it is not an issue.
You should have waited for spotlight to finish indexing.
You may have broken some links by forcing a shutdown while things were still being setup.
Which install method did you use, upgrade, archive or erase?

If you have installed a new hard drive , you will need to have formatted it in Disk Utility correctly. This may explain your problem.
Boot  into your 10.6 Install disk again at the top menubar > Utilities > select Disk utility and in there select your new hard drive, and select the tab Erase and choose to make the format as  Mac OS Extended Journaled. When that is finished look in the main window to make sure that the partition map scheme says GUID Partition Table.
Now go to the Restore tab and reinstall from your backup.

Is this issue with Tiger or Leopard? Your profile indicates you have a machine with Tiger, yet your signature of your post says you have Leopard.
Also, there is no such thing as a Powerbook Pro. Read the text under the screen to tell us exactly which model you have. MacBook Pro is the name given to Macs that are for the pro lineup of notebooks once Apple shifted to the Intel CPU.

On your friend's computer with an internet connection, log into the Mac App Store with your ID and download Yosemite from the Purchases section of the Mac App Store. The make a bootable USB install media using
    http://liondiskmaker.com/
Then boot from that on your computer and install

  • MacBook won't start - shows flashing folder icon with question mark

When I attempted a Spotlight search, my MacBook froze. I shut it down, and when I start again I get the sound, the blue screen, and then a flashing folder icon with a question mark. I tried starting with Option pressed down; didn't work, and now I don't even get the flashing folder icon, just the blue screen. Any suggestions?

The flashing folder with question mark means the computer can't find a working OS on the computer. This may mean your hard drive has failed.
Try holding the Shift key while starting up the machine. This puts the machine into Safe Mode.
If you have your install discs, insert Install Disc 1 and start up the computer while holding down the C key. When the Installer has loaded, choose a language. From the Utilities menu, choose *Disk Utility*. Does your hard drive show up here? If so, click on its icon (the one with manufacturer name & capacity, NOT "Macintosh HD"), and then click on the *Repair Disk* button.
If booting in Safe mode doesn't help or you don't have your install discs, you need to bring the computer to an Apple store and have the folks there look. If Disk Utility doesn't list your hard drive, it has very likely failed and will need to be replaced. If your machine is out of warranty, you're better off replacing it yourself, as it's very easy to do.
